After seeing the inauguration of President Barack Obama on TV I felt we were witnessing the beginning of a new direction that I hope will lead to a more peaceful world. The SCBA Board of Directors, at its’ November 6 & 7th, 2008 meeting in Kansas City, MO modified the Whole Herd Reporting (WHR) Rules & Regulations for the year 2009 by dividing the Fullblood/Purebred (F/P) Senepols into one category and the % Senepol into a separate category. The Rules also now includes “volume price discounts” to individuals and “country associations” that enroll many cattle and a provision for breeders “to get caught up in the SCBA WHR program” by providing a reduced fee of $5.00 per animal per generation, available until December 31, 2009, for dams and their calves not registered or in the SCBA WHR since 2001. This will allow some Senepol breeders a chance to now get their F/P or % Senepol cattle enrolled into WHR for 2010 at a reduced cost. While at the meeting the Board members also had a chance to visit the Angus Genetics, Inc. (AGI) Headquarters and visit with Mr. Bill Bowman, Chief Operating Officer of AGI, and Dr. Sally Northcutt, Genetic Research Director of AGI. We discussed at length the “pros” of having the Senepol herds in the WHR program with their performance data in order to provide the most accurate EPDs (Estimated Progeny Difference). The “new standard bearer” for selecting breeding cattle for your herd is EPDs, which is a calculated number based on performance data from all the calves in your herd, and many other herds (sometimes with Sires related to your Sire, and probably from a different environment and/ or Country) for Birth Weight (WT), Weaning Wt., Yearling Wt. and other traits. For the Senepol breed to be competitive with other cattle breeds today, we need the most accurate (%) EPDs possible, which means data from as many total herds and countries as possible. Please note the 2008 SIRE SUMMARY in the October Senepol World issue which listed the EPDs for the leading Sires in the Breed. When your F/P Senepol herd is enrolled in the SCBA WHR program, providing performance data on all the calves in that contemporary group (weighed at the same time with birthdates within 90 days) all your registration certificates will include EPDs. In our discussions with Dr. Northcutt she strongly indicated that she and AGI this spring would begin the process of developing the calculations necessary to provide Crossbred EPDs for the Senepol breed through a multi-breed analysis. If your Senepol herd is not in the SCBA WHR program you may still register and transfer their calves, at a fee, and the registration certificates will not include EPDs, ratios and adjusted weights. The next SCBA Board meeting will be held in Atlanta, Ga. March 13 &14, 2009. Please begin to make your plans to attend the 32nd SCBA Annual Convention June 25-26, 2009 on St. Croix, US Virgin Islands, the “home of the founding herds" and for a great vacation and learning experience. Regards, Hans Lawaetz President, SCBA Charles Whitworth 106 Rainbow Drive • Madison, AL 35758 (256) 830-1503 email: [email protected] Senepol World • 1 An invitation to beautiful St. Croix On behalf of the SCBA and the St. Croix Senepol Breeders we wish to extend to you a special invitation to join us at the 32nd SCBA Annual Convention to be held on St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands, June 2527, 2009. The convention will be held at the Carambola Beach Resort Hotel which is on the scenic north coast of St. Croix. I would encourage you to join us with members of your family to enjoy this beautiful vacation hotel. Although we are here for “business” with plans for speakers and tours of the two last main founding herds of the Senepol breed dating back to the 1950’s we will also plan for sailing trips to one of the few National Underwater Parks in the world and Historic Tours of Old Sugar Plantations dating back to the 1700’s. We will also have planned tours of the Carl & Marie Lawaetz Museum which Carl purchased in 1895 and developed his dairy herd and also the Frits E. Lawaetz Homestead which became the Annaly Farms Headquarters and where now Frits’ grand-daughter Jodie Lawaetz-Mays resides with her family in an old sugar mill built in 1803 and converted into a home in 1946 by the Annaly Farms “Limited Partner” Mr. Ward M. Canaday. The two towns of St. Croix, Frederiksted & Christiansted, are very historic dating back to the late 1700’s after Denmark bought the Islands from the French in 1733. The slaves were freed in 1848 and although there was a “fire burn” in 1776 when many plantations were burnt, St. Croix has remained a rural “laid back” island, with a very “melting pot” of nationalities inhabiting the island. Tourism has been on the increase for the past forty years, decreasing the acreage available for pastureland, but now more shopping is available for visitors. The University of the Virgin Islands (CN Brand) and Annaly Farms (WC Brand) still have an excellent number of Senepol cattle on the Island. I am sure you will enjoy seeing them. We are also reviewing the possibility of having a Senepol Auction to export one trailer load (25 head) or two trailer loads of young Senepol to the U.S., if there is sufficient interest. The business sessions and ranch tours are planned for Thursday and Friday during the day and the farewell banquet on Friday or Saturday evening. The Carambola Hotel has a very popular Caribbean Show and dancing every Friday night. I would recommend arriving on Wednesday, June 24th and depart on Monday June 29th, with sailing and island tours on Saturday and Sunday. Written by: Lisa Vorce For those people who have questions about how to get their non-Senepol animals into the SCBA database so they can start “breeding up” or cross breeding with a Senepol bull to eventually breed purebred Senepols, the following may be of interest. To register the calves of non-Senepol cows, SCBA needs to assign a record number for each of the non-Senepol Cows (or bulls) into the database. SCBA has a form which is on our website at http://www.senepolcattle.com/ forms where you can download this form. Fill out and email or mail this form back to me which includes as much information on these cows as you know. I will email you back with a record number for these cows and from there we can register the calves. Right now we are having a special where the cost to register calves from these nonSenepol cows is only $5 per generation with the plan that once you are caught up (all 2007 calves are registered), you can enroll all the females into WHR for 2010. I will work with you to get this accomplished. Senepol World • 9 2009 Senepol Convention Registration Form Please return this form to SCBA, P.O. Hopefully the following will help clarify questions people may have about WHR, why we promote it and what benefits you as the breeder receive from being a part of this program. Please think of Whole Herd Reporting as pre-paying for registration and transfer fees. The theory behind it is that your EPDs and the data SCBA collects will be more accurate if we collect data on all the animals in your herd, not just the very best ones. And it is also assumed that your female cows will have calves every year. So, if you enroll all the female cows into WHR, since you have already paid for registration (and transfer if you choose to), breeders are more likely to send in their data on all their animals. I like to use the following example to show how register all your animals improves your EPDs verses only registering the very best. Contemporary Group Comparisons Calf Weaning WHR Selective WWT WWT ID Weight Ratio Ratio A 600 120 109 B 550 110 100 C 500 100 91 D 450 90 E 400 80 EPDs are calculated by grouping calves into contemporary groups. A contemporary group looks at the gender (male or female) of a calf, a date range (90 days for birth date – meaning a calf born January 1st can be in the same contemporary group as a calf born 90 days later, but their weights must be taken right away), how the cow was serviced (AI, ET or Natural) and creates contemporary groups for all the animals registered at one time for each breeder. A ratio is determined by looking at the birth weight, weaning weight and yearling weights of the calves and comparing these weights against all the other animals in this animal's contemporary group. The more animals in the contemporary group, the greater the chance your best calves will have a higher Ratio for that trait (weaning, yearling or birth). For Weaning and Yearling, it is generally thought that a higher EPD is better. Many animals are bought and sold on EPDS. EPDs are established on many factors, but one very important one is the ratio for that particular trait. And we pay Angus Genetics, Inc to calculate our EPDs annually and then publish a Sire Summary every year with EPDs for this reason. In the comparison above, you can see there were 5 calves born in one contemporary group. Their weaning weights were all adjusted to a 205 day weight. When you calculate the weaning weight ratio on all of the five calves, you can see the ratio for calf A= 120, B = 110 and C = 100. Historically, we find that breeders only want to register their "best calves". But, by doing this what actually happens is, a true contemporary group is not established and therefore the ratios on your "best calves" are not 12 • Senepol World reflective as to what is really happening at your ranch. And in this case, the ratios when only the top three calves looks like this A=109, B=100 & C=91. Since ratios are a big factor in calculating your EPDs, you can see how registering all your calves improves your ratios, and therefore EPDs. So, as an incentive for breeders to register all their animals, we created Whole Herd Reporting. Breeders are given a list of all their active animals from our database on a list every year. From this list the breeder (owner) reports back to SCBA whether an animal has died, or was slaughtered or whether the animal is still alive and will be producing a calf for the upcoming year. We offer a few options depending on what the breeder wants to do. The four options for WHR work like this: Option 1A ($15) and 1B ($12) are for Fullblood/purebred cows. A purebred cow is any cow that is 18 months old (mature) and is 7/8 Senepol or greater. The percentage of Senepol is included on your report. Option 2A ($12) and 2B ($10) are for crossbred cows. A crossbred cow is any cow that is 18 months old (mature) and is less than 7/8 Senepol. The options A and B are the benefits you receive and the cost to enroll under these two options are different because of this. Options 1A and 2A (Options A) = This option allows for a breeder to register a calf born to the cow in that year. Also, when that calf is sold and transferred to someone else the transfer fee is already paid. If you do mostly Embryo transfers, it is important to note that only the first ET calf gets the free registration and transfer, but then you just pay regular registration fees there on out. Options 1B and 2B (Options B) = This option allows for a breeder to register a female calf born to the cow in that year. A breeder (owner) can still submit the data on the male calves at no charge, but if he wants a registration paper for a BULL calf, he pays additional money on top of the WHR fee already paid. This option is more popular in the United States because more bull calves are steered (castrated) in the US and sent to a feed lot before slaughter. This option does not give you a free transfer no matter what the gender of the calf. We offer a payment option to be more convenient for the breeder. If you would prefer to pay all the WHR fees in January, that is fine with SCBA, it is whatever you want to do. Some breeders prefer to pay for half now and pay the second half in August. This is just an option to make it more flexible for you. For Fullblood and crossbred breeders who are not currently active in WHR now is a good time to get caught up with your registrations for the discounted rate of $5 per generation. This will allow you to get your entire herd caught up and into WHR for 2010. As far as the bull disposal code. This is new as of last year. And the theory behind this is that for SCBA to keep track of how many bulls are actually still alive, this would be an opportunity for you to dispose (or make inactive) any bull that you no longer have (whether it died or was slaughtered). If the bull is still alive, just leave that portion of the form blank.
