Some who walked with him did not understand who Jesus really was. They left him because of what true discipleship required. Civil War-era clergyman Henry Ward Beecher famously said, “It is not what we take up, but what we give up that makes us rich.” Remember the rich man who was unwilling to sell all his possessions and give the money to the poor? So Jesus asks Peter, “Who do people say that I am? He tells them if they are willing to lose their lives for his sake and the sake of the Gospel, they will thereby save their present lives - and receive the gift of life everlasting. The Twelve were ready. They had already given up their former lives by abandoning their boats in the harbor. Peter speaks for them, declaring to Jesus, “you are the Christ.” There really was no other place for them to go. They were willing to take up their crosses and thus suffer for the Lord if needed. Are we destined to do the same? But what is this suffering that is ours to embrace? What is the suffering that will allow us to become our truest and most Christian selves? One explanation comes from an unexpected source. Sigmund Freud once said that we are threatened with suffering from three directions: from our own body, which is doomed to decay and dissolution and cannot even do that without sending out pain and anxiety as warning signals; from the external world, which may rage against us with overwhelming and merciless forces of destruction; and finally from our relationships with other people. Jesus, who immersed himself completely in the human condition, experienced every sort and degree of suffering in order to translate that experience into an eloquent expression of love. That suffering identified him as the Christ, the Savior. Our suffering, when united to his, identifies us as his own. Even though at times life will be difficult and challenging, know that Jesus will be there to help us get through those moments. There is good news with regards to our RCIA program. The RCIA process is helping guide individuals into full membership in our church. More individuals are now coming forward. They are from various experiences and relationships with God. Some were raised Protestant. Others might have only been baptized Catholic or another faith but nothing else. Still others, are seeking a relationship with Christ for the first time. Presently those that are coming to “look” are passing through the Inquiry Period of the RCIA. On Thursday evenings inquirers gather informally with the RCIA team simply to talk, listen and/or ask questions. I would like to invite you, potential inquirers, to come and see. Or, if you know someone who might be interested in joining the Catholic Church, please direct them to our Thursday night Inquiry sessions in the Community Room in the back of the church. Please direct any questions you, or they, might have to our RCIA coordinator, Jazmir Fajardo, in our parish office. I would also be happy to help you if I can. Please know that all are welcome to come and see. That tugging at your heart just might be Jesus calling you to come closer to him. May you all have a wonderful and blessed week. Padre Michael Rocha This Week at Saint Paschal’s Confirmation Program Registration is currently open. Registration for Religious Education is currently open September 20th: Young Adults: Sundays at Starbucks! See you there. Be sure to buy your Car Raffle Tickets today after Mass! New St. Paschal Pastoral Council In accordance with the guidelines of the Archdiocese I wish to reintroduce and re-establish a Pastoral Council for our parish. The role of a Parish Pastoral Council (PPC) is to help me, the pastor, in coming to understand and live out the parish’s pastoral mission. The PPC engages in both visioning and long-term planning. It is consultative to the Pastor. The PPC is not a coordinating committee. It is not concerned with the day-to-day administrative operation that are the responsibility of the Pastor, parochial vicar(s), deacons and parish staff. It is distinct from the Parish Finance Council, as well. The 8-12 members that make up the PPC are called forth from the community at large. They “make present” the wisdom of the various members of the parish. They are not there to represent certain ministries. They are not elected. The members are selected through a process of prayer and discernment for limited terms. Members of the Council should meet certain criteria: being a baptized, practicing Catholic; being a registered member of the parish for at least 5 years; participating in the ongoing life of the parish, especially Sunday Eucharist; and being at least 21 years of age. The PPC will generally meet once a month. A set date for those meetings will be established after the initial meeting. If you are interested in being a member of the Pastoral Council then please return the attached form to me as soon as possible. If you would like to nominate someone to the council, and you have discussed it with them, please return the attached form as soon as possible. I thank you for your consideration and interest in helping our parish grow as well as helping me in my guidance of our community. After I have received names of nominees I will consult with parish staff and leadership of the parish for final selections and appointments. Fr.
