New markets beckon to us daily with challenges which only an evolution of the Italian production system can face. We are snowed down daily with news of threats to the Italian industrial system, and we are always attacked by journalists, opinion- makers or mere make-shift economists who, with their long muddled lectures, propose various solutions. In an attempt to avoid falling into the trap, we try, in our own small way, to face these markets which are a threat, but at the same time offer opportunities. In the last few years at OCME, we invested as sunken capital, i.e. not amortized, almost 1.5% of our turnover in research and development. The research is aimed at improving existing machinery, to make them even more reliable, easier to construct, use and maintain in perfect working condition. And also to make them more economical with faster return of investment. The development is aimed at integrating our already large range of machines with new products, in particular, Hydra, the new filler for beverages, and the Auriga, the laser-guided shuttle car. Six months after it was launched, Hydra received an excellent response from the market, 5 machines have already been sold and two are working in full swing to the extreme satisfaction of customers who placed their trust in us. For Auriga, the laser-guided shuttle car, the success came almost as a surprise, 27 were already sold. In OCME we believe in ongoing renewal of the product, not only with regards to machinery but also with regards to the services offered to the WorldCare Corporate environmental respect programme customer. New working methods have entered our sector and many customers have entrusted us with complete maintenance of their OCME products with obvious economic gain and improved efficiency. But, as described in the previous issue of OCME Informa, a Company’s role is not limited to economic gain, and as social entities, we are called upon to carry out activities concerning the environment in which we operate. We thus continue to focus attention on activities for safeguarding the environment in which we operate, by increasing our fleet of Company cars running on natural gas, the fuel that causes the least damage to the environment, by using diesel fuel with low sulphur content, and increasing collaboration with Enìa (formerly AMPS Ambiente) for sorted waste disposal. In our canteens, we have started collection of organic products, and all food packages, and the sorted collection of paper, glass, plastic, metal, wood, medicines past their expiry date, used batteries and toner cartridges continues in parallel in offices and in workshops. We are confident that this effort shared by the Company and its employees will make a small but significant contribution to improving the environment we live in. Our best wishes to all our customers and thank you for your continued trust in us. We invite you to attend the two important fairs during the year, Interpak and Drinktek, and visit our stand to discover what the OCME world has in store. It’s less than one year since the launch of the first Hydra N still water filler and OCME’s strategy in this field is already proving its worth. In the second half of 2004 a total of five customers chose to install the new Hydra fillers. Specifically, two Hydra N triple block units (model 100-80-20 and model 40-40-10) are already providing successful service with outputs, for 1.5 l containers, of 34,000 bph and 14,000 bph respectively. All the machines are equipped with the patented Neck Handling system and a sloping stainless steel base. The maximum level of hygiene is guaranteed by a full enclosure with lamellar sterile air flows, keeping the various rinse, filling, and capping zones completely protected. In order to reduce maintenance requirements all moving parts are made of self-lubricating material or served by an automatic centralised lubrication system that operates on a daily basis in accordance with a lubrication programme, delivering variable volumes of grease to the different users on the machine. In the design stage particular attention was devoted to environmental and acoustic pollution. Special provisions have been adopted to simplify the drive system, reducing the number of moving parts and using helical teeth for the starwheel gears, which are manufactured using different materials (nylon or steel). These solutions mean that the gears and drives of our Hydra fillers can offer the following important benefits: • no backlash • not subject to wear • very low noise levels • no need for lubrication And of course, all the machines making up the triple-block filler system are manufactured to ensure the maximum levels of safety, in full compliance with applicable standards (CE regulations) New Hydra ISO for carbonated products In addition to Hydra version N, OCME is currently completing the new series of Hydra Iso fillers to offer a perfect solution for filling sparkling products, notably carbonated soft drinks and water. Priority is always awarded to construction concepts based on advanced technical solutions, which make it possible to obtain hygienic and efficient systems with very low maintenance requirements. The new Hydra Isobarica is one of the most attractive solutions for filling carbonated products (water and beverages) utilising level technology. Also on the new Hydra Iso, Pet bottles are transferred into the machine utilising a Neck Handling system. This solution means that there are almost no size change operations required when switching to another PET bottle size with the same neck diameter. One of the most noteworthy aspects of the machine is the filling valve, designed for level filling with an isobarometric process, plus electronic control of the various phases of the process. This solution makes it possible to obtain very high performance by reducing maintenance to the minimum while achieving very high fill level precision. Further advantages of the new Hydra Iso filling valve include: • facility for CO2 flushing prior to filling with products featuring high sensitivity to oxygen • single or double decompression for products that tend to generate large amounts of foam • nozzle cleaning before filling with CO2 external flushing • repeatability of ideal filling conditions • separate air return (optional); this is important when filling still water to avoid the risk of contamination of the main filler bowl • gravity filling of still water without back-pressure (optional) The filling valve is designed in a modular block configuration with a limited number of parts, thereby reducing and simplifying maintenance work. • The blocks are independent to facilitate removal and/or renewal. • The upper block contains the electro-pneumatic actuators controlling the pressurisation, filling, and closing phases. SEE HYDRA LIVE AT: 12/17-sept-05 Stand: MUNICH GERMANY B5 403/413/602/612 return spouts • The lower block incorporates the electro-pneumatic actuators controlling the decompression phases (single or, on request, double). The filling phases of carbonated liquids are controlled by the PLC by setting dedicated setting in relation to different product and bottle types. In the event of a size change it is necessary simply to select a different recipe from the Operator panel and, if necessary, change the return spouts that determine the fill level in the bottles. When filling still water (or other contamination-sensitive products) a separate return system can be fitted for air from the bottle in such a way as to eliminate the risk of possible contamination of the product held in the filler bowl. With this modification for still products filling is performed by gravity without requiring the use of pressure. The PLC controls the upper block for opening and closing of the filling valve without back-pressure. In this case phases 2) and 5) are eliminated completely, this facilitating the use of lightweight preforms with a flat base. The construction details are conceived to obtain the maximum efficiency of product circuit sanitization. Ingeniería de Línea OCME’s experience in the field of construction of complete bottling lines is a reliable guarantee for customers seeking the highest possible quality levels. The integration of the new Hydra filler in the range of OCME products is a major step forward in the drive to deliver complete lines for the Beverages market. Recent successes in this business area include the installation, by OCME engineers, of a complete line in Australia. The new line, which was built and installed in record time, is capable of handling six different PET bottle sizes (250ml, 330ml, 500ml, 600ml, 1000ml and 1500ml) with production outputs from 15,000 to 34,000 bph for still mineral water. Special attention in this project was required in defining the hygiene aspects of the filling process and in the quality of the bottled product. The OCME supply includes a depalletiser for loose bottles, an unscrambler, pneumatic conveyors, HYDRA 100-80-20 p.113 Rinser/filler/capper triple block system, automatic CIP sanitization system, loose bottle conveyor belts, automatic reel labeller, ALTAIR X case packer, VEGA S, case conveyor belts, PERSEUS L palletizer, pallet conveyors, pallet wrapper. The meeting was attended by the following OCME personnel: Antonino Eneide (Head of the Assistance Service), Alessandra Gotri (Service Manager for France), Francesca Melegari (Spare Parts Manager), Sandro Gallingani (Tooling Manager for France), and Gabriele Folli (Training Manager). The scope of the meeting was to identify, from the viewpoint of after-sales services, daily service requirements, the strengths and weaknesses of OCME, and the outlook for the future in this area. We had a series of questions to ask at the meeting: AS A GENERAL RULE WHAT TYPE OF SERVICE ARE YOU LOOKING FOR FROM YOUR MAIN MACHINERY SUPPLIERS? The main thing I appreciate in relations with suppliers is the speed and accuracy of their response to meet our requirements. One specific aspect is the importance of having the right contact for each area of activity (spares, service, tooling) so that lengthy bureaucratic procedures can be eliminated. Brasserie Fischer is specialised in the production of special beers. When our marketing people ask us for a new container it’s essential for us to be able to guarantee a definite timeframe for preparation and startup of the new handling parts. Any delays in this process would make our efforts absolutely pointless. HOW DO YOU RATE OCME FROM THE STANDPOINT OF AFTER-SALES SERVICES (such as spares, technical service, training, handling parts, and so forth)? We’ve been doing business with OCME since 1997 when we installed our first AVL 55 case packer. I have witnessed a general improvement in the quality of service provided by your company. For example, in the early days we had language problems with the service engineers, so I had to step in personally to ensure my staff received the right information. Today this problem has been solved because we can count on the aid of a team of highly experienced engineers fluent in French and with the necessary mechanical and electronic engineering skills (eg. currently 23 out of 70 OCME service engineers are fluent in French and in 2004 we hired a French engineer who reports directly to the OCME France subsidiary). In addition, I am totally satisfied with OCME in regard to what I consider to be the critical aspect of our work, meaning the promptness and quality of service interventions. In a nutshell, OCME never leaves us to sort things out on our own. In terms of documentation, we’re perfectly happy with the material supplied: CDs with interactive catalogues, straightforward and comprehensive instruction manuals, electrical schematics and assembly drawings. In relation to the Spare Parts Service, we appreciate the rapidity and clarity of responses and, in general, the organisation of your Service automatically keeps us up to speed with regard to each parts shipment. And we’re planning to sign up with your Netspares service soon so that we can order the spares we need directly on the Internet. WHICH ARE THE ASPECTS OF OUR AFTER-SALES SERVICES THAT YOU CONSIDER COULD BE IMPROVED FOR THE NEAR FUTURE? WHAT DO YOU THINK OF PERIODIC PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE CONTRACTS? In general, periodic maintenance contracts have to be radically tailored to fit the specific needs of each of our production plants. The priority for our technical and production organisation is always speed of response and clear communications in a process in which we work as partners in the drive to reach a shared goal. Specifically, we have a hot-line with OCME and whenever we receive a visit from one of your engineers for technical modifications or service requirements we always devote part of the time to making a global check of the machines so we obtain a situation in which maintenance is carried out constantly through time. I think relations with suppliers need to be consolidated to maximise the speed and quality of service. In this context meetings of this type are highly positive because they provide us with the opportunity to exchange information on critical aspects and discuss the best way to improve them to the benefit of our organisation and that of our supplier. OCME France registered as an official training organisation. Our French subsidiary, OCME France, has been registered as a training organisation with the prefecture of the l’lle region of France under number 11753900875. Starting from 1 January 2005 this additional service is available for our French customers, who frequently request training courses on OCME machines and plants. In this context, the new qualification of our organisation allows our customers to make use of financial facilitations granted by the French ministry for employment. The training team at the disposal of our French customers includes 23 French-speaking instructors, each of whom have specific mechanical and electronic skills in relation to the various types of machine. The arrival at this important result is another step forward in the process of evolution that started in March 2003 when OCME decided to reorganise and strengthen its training service, placing its management in the capable hands of Gabriele Folli (Head of Operational Marketing). Between March 2003 and February 2005 more than 400 people have taken part in the courses organised by OCME, either on our company premises, or directly on customers’ sites: at the end of each course participants compile a quality assessment questionnaire, the results of which show that the service has been very well received (more than 90% positive appraisals). In general, users were highly appreciative of the fact that unlike other companies in the sector, OCME’s instructors are chosen from among technical personnel forming part of our service department, all of whom can offer the benefits that come from experience gained directly in the field. Apart from the popular commitment, the Company has launched a series of activities for sorted recycling of wastes produced in our canteens, offices and workshops. This project was started in collaboration with AMPS Ambiente, now Enìa, a Company which provides waste collection and treatment services in the municipality of Parma. Positive results have already been obtained in terms of quality of the sorted collection proving how correct information and good habits can contribute to safeguarding the environment. Sorted waste collection is a practice that can be applied at home with the result that most materials and raw materials can be recycled. OCME is glad to support EMERGENCY’s initiative for the treatment and rehabilitation of victims of wars and of mines, the women Basketball Team of Parma and the “RHINOVICES” Team for the aid of rhinos in Kenya. Together for 30 years at the service of the Mexican industry 2005 is the thirtieth anniversary of collaboration between OCME and EUROTECSA. This pair is linked to the progress of the Mexican industry in the last three decades and has brought significant success in many sectors starting with petrochemicals to the beverages industry. Mr. George Mordacci has been an integral part of this solid collaboration since 1975, when EUROTECSA started taking its first steps as a small Company before growing into a working force of 50 employees and becoming a point of reference in Mexican industrial technology. This is therefore the ideal occasion for thanking Mr. Sig. Mordacci and Mr. Rafael Estrada (General Manager and partner of Eurotecsa) for their profuse commitment to making OCME a leading name on the Mexican scene.
