Holyoke Public Schools Community Message
Dear Families, Partners and Colleagues, Our condolences go out to the families and friends of the victims and especially to those in our community who lost their loved ones on Sunday morning in Orlando. We want to thank the guidance counsellors, educators and leaders in Holyoke who took the time and created spaces to counsel and make sense of last weekend’s tragic loss of life with our students. Tragedies like the Orlando shooting can be deeply troubling events. For our students and families who have been personally impacted by trauma and violence, they can bring to the surface challenging emotions. The resources below offer suggestions for helping students understand and minimize the stress and anxiety associated with traumatic loss. As we close out the 2015‐16 school year I would like to thank our team of committed educators, volunteers, and partners for their support. Additionally, I want to congratulate our retirees and express gratitude for their many years of dedication and impact on the lives of Holyoke students. It is important that we celebrate our successes and accomplishments and begin the reflective work to kick off the 2016‐

It's a testament to the school's solid plan that it was funded: The Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) received $9,800,320 in requests and awarded just $2,656,050 in grant funds. Kelly is one of only two schools in Massachusetts awarded an ELT grant. The grant will fund rich partnerships with the Boys and Girls Club, Enchanted Circle Theater and the YMCA ‐ partnerships that will free up time for Kelly School educators to collaborate, plan and learn together in grade level and content area teams. FRIENDS OF HOLYOKE PUBLIC SCHOOLS GRANTS ANNOUNCED Friends of Holyoke Public Schools recently announced grants have been awarded for innovative projects developed by HPS educators. Lynn Dutsar, (Dean Technical High School) will purchase and set up a STEM Follet Makerspace in the Dean library with FOHPS grant funds. Makerspace for high school students is a hands‐on inquiry and exploration resource for high school students that includes a variety of materials, including books, building supplies, and robotic kits. Laura Shanahan (Kelly School) will receive iPads for use in her classroom and Karen Robidoux (Sullivan School) will receive funds for a coding and robotics curriculum. Thank you to these HPS grant applicants and Friends of Holyoke Public Schools for making these terrific opportunities available to our students and staff! PARENT CELEBRATION AND LEARNING BREAKFAST Thank you to all who attended and supported the Parent Celebration and Learning Breakfast this week. Special thanks to parent volunteers, the Boys & Girls Club for hosting the event, Sodexo for catering the delicious breakfast; and to our speakers Tanisha Harris, Marta Rodriguez, and Leanne Fay for their contributions. ASPIRING PRINCIPALS We are delighted to announce the next cohort of aspiring principals in the Teachers21 Urban Principals Development Institute includes HPS educators Yvonne Hilyard Ordonez, Arrin Brewer Barnes and Erik Spracklin. The program is unique—an initiative originally made possible when the Commonwealth’s Department of Elementary and Secondary Education designated a portion of the state’s Race to the Top funds to establish a cutting‐edge program for the preparation of aspiring principals. From the beginning, this program has been directed by Teachers21 in a partnership with the NYC Leadership Academy that allowed us to adapt major components of their training model to the realities of the school scene here in Massachusetts. These HPS educators will be joining a very strong group of educators who are aspiring to leadership positions in some of the state's most challenging public schools. Joining the three HPS educators, are thirteen participants from the Springfield Public Schools and four from the Worcester schools. 2 The Kelly School Girls on the Run teams participated in their first 5k on June 5th!! Congratulations girls!

Estimadas familias, Socios y Colegas Nuestras condolencias a las familias y amigos de las víctimas y en especial a aquellos en nuestra comunidad que perdieron sus seres queridos en la mañana del domingo en Orlando. Queremos agradecer a los consejeros de orientación, educadores y líderes en Holyoke que tomaron el tiempo y crearon espacios para aconsejar y darle sentido a la trágica pérdida de vida la semana pasada con nuestros estudiantes. Tragedias como el tiroteo de Orlando pueden ser eventos muy preocupantes. Para nuestros estudiantes y familias que han sido afectadas personalmente por el trauma y la violencia, esto puede aportar a las emociones superficiales difíciles. Los recursos a continuación ofrecen sugerencias para ayudar a los estudiantes a comprender y minimizar el estrés y la ansiedad asociada con la pérdida traumática. Al cerrar el año escolar 2015‐2016, me gustaría agradecer nuestro equipo de educadores comprometidos, voluntarios y socios por su apoyo. Además, quiero felicitar a nuestros jubilados y expresar agradecimiento por sus muchos años de dedicación y el impacto en la vida de los estudiantes de Holyoke.
