O’Keeffe MONTHLY PORTRAIT Georgia O’Keeffe Middle School 510 S. Thornton Avenue Madison, WI 53703 Kay D. Enright, Principal Telephone: 608/204-6820 Attendance: 608/204-6821 Fax: 608/204-0561 __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ DECEMBER 2012/JANUARY 2013 Newsletter Welcome to O’Keeffe Middle School! Dear Families, Students and Staff, It is hard to believe that we are already in the middle of second quarter and preparing to send out progress reports. We are beginning to plan 8th grade transition to high school and 6th graders are settled into a middle school routine. Eighth graders are beginning the Explore test and will be working on high school schedules after the holiday break. Please remind your student(s) to wear a coat, hat and gloves every day. We will go outside for recess every day – we need the exercise and fresh air. The Geography Bee and Spelling Bee are on the horizon. Our students always make this a joyful and spirited competition. Our December concert series is underway and it is marvelous to see the musical gains all of our students make in a few short months. Thanks to our Parent Teacher Group for sponsoring our ice cream socials. O’Keeffe staff always assists with the serving as well as supervision. Since all of our students are required to participate in music, our concerts are a great way to see all of our families. Thanks to all parents who helped with the Election Day bake sale as well contributing and serving the staff breakfast during conferences. We are so thankful for the continual support of our O’Keeffe community – it is a primary reason we are such a strong school! First quarter honor rolls are included in the newsletter and students were recognized at a pizza party. At our assembly that celebrated first quarter accomplishments we recognized achievement, athletes and behavior. This quarter our performer at the assembly was 7th grader Persephone Bates – it was a wonderful celebration of O’Keeffe. Please continue to encourage your student to stay for Homework Club. It is a great opportunity to get 1:1 help, check for understanding and to make sure all work is completed. Last year, we started the tradition of a “Fun Day” on the last day before holiday break – Friday, December 21st this year. We have scheduled a Staff-Student Basketball game, arts and crafts, games, etc. Our Student Councils will assist with the planning of this day this year. Rather than going as a school to a movie, we have found it builds our community more to participate in activities together. 2012 has been a great year at O’Keeffe Middle School and 2013 will be even better. The enthusiasm and energy our students have is contagious. We have been working hard on being on time, with materials and ready to learn. This shows in their achievement and attitude. Enjoy the holiday break and remember school resumes on Monday, January 7th. Forty-one schools were awarded grants totaling $56,965. This year O’Keeffe Middle School had $1,709 in endowment income available to use to make grants for imaginative programs and projects that propel student learning which can’t currently be funded through the core school budget. Our grants committee decided to fund the following project using the available endowment income: Funds will be used for Hip-Hop dance lessons for each student through physical education classes. A guest instructor teaches whole songs, culminating in a performance assembly and competition. If you have any questions about the School Endowments, please contact Mary Bartzen at 232-7820 or [email protected]. To donate to our school’s endowment, visit the Foundation for Madison’s Public Schools’ website at www.fmps.org. ____________________________________________________________________________________ Mary Bartzen Community Partnerships Director Foundation for Madison’s Public Schools 455 Science Drive, Suite 130 Madison, WI 53711 Phone: (608) 232-7820 Fax: (608) 232-7822 [email protected] www.fmps.org 3 From Your Library Battle of the Books has started! This is an optional activity for students. Teams of 2-4 students read books from a set list of books selected by Madison middle school librarians. At the end of February, we will have a school-wide competition for each grade. During the competition, students will be asked trivia style questions about the books that they have read. The winning team for each grade will go on to the district-wide competition held the first week of March. If your child is participating in Battle of the Books, please encourage them to keep up with their reading. You may also ask them to tell you about the book to help them remember details about it. Teams should try to get together occasionally to talk about the books and keep each other on track. You can find more information about Battle of the Books here: https://okeeffeweb.madison.k12.wi.us/node/294. Ms. Ballwahn _____________________________________________________________________________ SOUP CAN PROJECT Current sixth, seventh and eighth grade Art students at O'Keeffe Middle School participated in the "Andy Warhol Soup Can Project". We held a canned soup drive to collect as many cans of Campbell's and other varieties of soup that will be donated to the Goodman Community Center food pantry once we are finished painting pictures of the cans. Students studied Andy Warhol's work, pop art, color, and how to paint with acrylic paint. We created compositions of soup cans as I wanted students to think about shape and the soup can is a simple form. We tried to make our soup cans look 3-dimensional - an intentional step away from the flatness of Andy's soup cans. We decided to make our own interpretation of the soup can painting. There will be an art show on Monday, January 7th from 3:00 p.m.to 5:00 p.m. at the Goodman Center with approximately 200 paintings there featuring our O’Keeffe artists. Please feel free to attend and support our artists. April Sopkin - Art Teacher, O'Keeffe Middle 4 Madison Metropolitan School District Promotion Policy Eighth Grade to Ninth Grade 1. Beginning September 1, 2002, to be promoted from eighth grade, a student must have a 1.67 cumulative GPA during seventh and eighth grade in each of the core content areas (English/Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies). For the purpose of this Policy, if a teacher or teachers give a student report card grades that meet the promotion standard that is set forth above, such report card grades are considered a formal teacher recommendation to promote the student. 2. If a student has less than a 1.67 cumulative GPA from 7th and 8th grade in any of the core content areas, the school shall review the student's performance on the Wisconsin Knowledge and Concepts Examination (WKCE). If the student has a score of "basic" or above in each content area where the GPA was below 1.67, the student shall be promoted. Either the Reading or the Language Arts subtest score on the WKCE may be used in lieu of the student's English/Language Arts GPA. 3. If a student does not meet the criteria relative to his/her report card grade point average or the WKCE, the student may be promoted if the student's academic performance is such that he/she passes an approved District summer school program that the student takes between his/her 8th and 9th grade school years. The summer school program must be approved by the District as a program that is a learning opportunity for the purpose of the student meeting the District's requirement(s). 4. If a student does not meet the criteria relative to the report card grade point average, the WKCE or the District's summer school program, the student may, with District approval, (1) repeat the 8th grade school program, or (2) remain in 8th grade until the student attends and satisfies the District's requirement(s) in a District program that has been approved by the District as a learning opportunity for the purpose of the student meeting such requirement(s). If a student repeats the above-referenced 8th grade school program, and/or attends and satisfies the District's requirement(s) in the above-referenced District program, a student shall be promoted to 9th grade. An 8th grade student who meets the District's requirement(s) shall be promoted as soon as practicable. 5. The general student promotion requirements apply to a student with disabilities who is eligible for services under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) unless modified or alternative criteria are designated in the student's Individualized Education Program (IEP) by appropriate team members. Students with disabilities who meet the requirements of their promotion criteria in the IEP as determined by each student's individualized education program team will be promoted. 6. If a decision to retain a student is made over the objections of the parent/guardian, the decision may be appealed to the Assistant Superintendent responsible for that level, whose decision shall be final. 5 Bee Season at O’Keefe Middle School On January 9, 2013, O’Keeffe will hold its annual school-wide geography bee. All students are offered the opportunity to participate in classroom geography bees held during the month of December. The winner of the school-wide geography bee will receive a medal and the opportunity to participate in the next level of geography competition. In January, O’Keeffe will also hold its annual school-wide spelling bee. As with the geography bee, all students are offered the opportunity to participate in classroom spelling bees prior to the school-wide competition on January 23, 2013. Remind your middle school student to listen for announcements regarding these two prestigious competitions. 6 O’Keeffe Middle School 100% Attendance 1st Quarter – 2012-2013 Gwyneth Jade Maia Fatoumata November 2012 Dear Families of MMSD Students, When the weather is bad, the Madison Metropolitan School District follows a set of guidelines for deciding if school will be open or closed. The district must make a decision that is the best for all students. We realize our decisions may create an inconvenience with your individual circumstances. Therefore, we encourage and strongly support you in making the decision that is best for your child(ren). You are always the best judge of your child’s health and safety. The process for deciding when schools are open or closed due to snow and/or ice District staff members review the weather conditions beginning early in the morning. They talk with weather forecasters, the City Streets Department, Madison Police and Dane County Sheriff’s Departments, and school district staff to see if all buildings are accessible for students and staff. MMSD consults with bus companies to see if buses will be able to travel safely to and from school. MMSD administration makes the decision whether to close schools by 6:30 a.m. or earlier, and then communicate this decision to all local news outlets and to parents via email, phone and text message. . How you can find out if schools are closed On days when the weather is bad, listen to any local radio or television station for information about school closing. If during registration you have provided an email address and/or text message phone number in the parent portal to the Infinite Campus student information system, you will be contacted in the morning regarding a school closing. You may also check our website www.mmsd.org or MMSD-TV Cable Channel 993. When schools are closed because of extreme cold When the National Weather Service has a wind chill WARNING for Dane County in effect for the time just before the school day begins, we will make a decision if our schools should close. It is quite likely we will make this type of closing decision on the morning of the day in question. If there is a wind chill ADVISORY (and not a WARNING) for the county, schools will likely be open. When schools are closed, all activities are canceled When Madison schools are closed for the day, it also means that all activities scheduled in school buildings for that day are canceled. This includes all MSCR programs and all after school programs. Why schools are generally not dismissed early on days when the weather is bad In many of our families, adults work outside the home and they have no child care arrangements available before the end of the school day. However, if your schedule allows and if you feel your child(ren) will be safer at home, you can pick your child(ren) up before the end of the school day. If you do, go to the school office and request that your child(ren) be dismissed to you. We try to keep schools open When schools close, many families have issues with child care. As a result, we try to keep schools open if it’s safe to do so. However, as we stated at the top of this letter, parents can always make the decision to keep their child(ren) at home in bad weather. Why school starts are not delayed on days when the weather is bad but will improve during the day In many of our families, adults working outside the home are not able to adjust their work schedules or find child care to accommodate a later start. If your family transports your child(ren) to school, we appreciate the extra effort it takes on severe weather days and we acknowledge that the students’ arrival might be somewhat delayed. 15 When schools are closed for other reasons If you have a question about whether schools or a particular school will be closed for reasons other than severe weather, we will communicate via email to those parents/guardians who have provided their email address to us via Infinite Campus – the online student information system. You can also listen to local radio or television stations, go to the school’s Web site or watch MMSD-TV. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation For every family which is happy that school is in session on days when the weather is bad, there is another family that feels schools should be closed. The decision to open or close schools during inclement weather brings out some of the strongest community reactions – no matter which way we go with our weather decisions. We appreciate your understanding of the difficulties in making this decision, and your support in helping your child get to school safely on winter days. Please know that we will use safety considerations in making all of our weather decisions. Believe it or not, it will soon be time for you to help your 8th grader get ready for another major educational milestone – STARTING HIGH SCHOOL! It is sometimes very difficult for 8th grade students (and parents) to come to terms with leaving middle school and starting high school. To adjust successfully, students and parents need good information, time to think about next year’s school program, and multiple opportunities to talk about the choices available. During the next several months it will be very important for you, the parent, to encourage your youngster to start mentally “processing” next year’s big change. From 6:00-8:30 p.m. on February 6th, all 8th grade parents and students should take advantage of a very important opportunity to visit East, find out about high school, and meet with East staff. In addition to staff presentations, there are typically tours and instructions regarding high school elective classes. Also on that evening, there are informational meetings for EEN (Special Education) and ELL(English Language Learner) families. On February 13th, East Counselors will be meeting with 8th graders during the school day in classrooms to provide registration instructions and materials. By late February, 8th Grade students and parents will be submitting 9th grade course selections! In April and May, additional “Welcome to East” presentations are planned for students. There is also a free, weeklong orientation class at East offered through MSCR during the summer called “Purgolder 101.” Ready…Set…Get your Registration Materials! One of the most important tasks for you and your 8th grader is to select classes for next year. Registration materials will be given to students attending O’Keeffe Middle on February 13th. Parents need to help students consider the course options and make appropriate selections. Make certain that you review the materials that your student brings home, discuss scheduling possibilities, and participate as your student completes the course election sheet. If your child has special needs, keep in mind that Case Managers from O’Keeffe and East will help suggest appropriate classes for your student. Because parent participation in the course selection process is essential, we require students to have their parent or guardian sign the yellow course election sheet. Earn high school credits this summer! Your student may wish to enroll in the 2013 summer school program at East. Incoming 9th graders can take classes that will provide high school credits in subjects like Art, Study Skills, Algebra Prep, Physical Education, Health, and Keyboarding. The schedule for East High summer school course offerings is mailed to parents in early May. Families of students wishing to attend LaFollette or other High Schools should contact O’Keeffe Counselor, Paul Chotlos for alternative registration information. He can be reached at 204-6828 or via email: [email protected] 22 LA FOLLETTE HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT SCHEDULING DEMONSTRATION NIGHT Wednesday, January 23, 2013 6:30-8:30 PM SAVE THE DATE!!! If so, know that the PTG collects Box Tops for Education throughout the year as one of its fundraising projects. You can be an important “donor” to this effort simply by clipping those bright pink box tops from General Mills products and dropping them off in the gold-foiled “Box Tops for Education” box in the O’Keeffe main office. Thanks for your help! If you have any questions or want someone to stop by and pick up your Box Tops, feel free to contact Diane Agans at [email protected] NOTE: Though the O’Keeffe PTG does not collect milk caps or soup labels at this time, Marquette School does. They have a handy plastic drawer system set up just outside their main office if you have milk caps or soup labels to donate. ________________________________________________________________ Culver’s…we had to change one of our dates.
