One of the great joys of my ministry is to be with people considering commitments of various sorts or reaping the benefits of those commitments. I think of my time with a young couple preparing for the sacrament of marriage. When I asked about their engagement, the young man told me every detail of the day he proposed – keeping the memory alive was an integral part of his commitment to his beloved. I also remember my privileged place on the faculty of Assumption Seminary for almost ten years, watching those being formed for ordained ministry join the ranks of countless others in accepting priestly commitment, enthusiastic for the future. I doubt that any spouse or priest has had a clear idea where God would lead once the commitment had been made. How have so many been sustained in good times and bad by their “I do’s” or “Present” spoken long ago? Commitment and hard work – or as James says in today’s second reading, faith and works – always go together! James proclaimed it, but it is for us to pursue relentlessly the journey of living it out. In today’s Gospel reading Peter is learning this truth from Jesus. His confession of faith at Caesarea is an important moment – both for him and for Jesus. Up to this time Jesus has urged strict secrecy regarding his Messianic identity and mission – people cured of illnesses are forbidden to speak of it (which was as impossible for them as for the young fiancé not to sing the praises of his betrothed). But now in Caesarea Jesus asks His disciples who the crowd thinks He is, and they reply with the names of prophets who foretold the Messiah’s coming. Christ then asks, “Who do you say that I am?” and Peter declares (for all the disciples) that He is the Messiah, the fulfillment of those prophecies – not merely a rabbi and miracle worker. When Peter names Jesus as Messiah, He accepts the recognition. But He also goes on to tell them what dire things will happen to Him as the Messiah. There must be no false pretenses: His Messianic identity and their discipleship are related, and it will cost all of them dearly. These are hard words, and Peter, despite his confession of faith, has not yet embraced the humiliating aspects of Jesus being the Messiah. So he rebukes Jesus, and Jesus in turn must rebuke him. Over time Peter will learn the difficult, sacrificial consequences of his faith in Jesus’ Messiahship. What he says he believes he must learn to live out. Faith and works. Love and commitment. In life and until death. The beginning of the academic year offers us at Notre Dame Catholic Church and School many opportunities to serve. Our Religious Education programs are soon under way. Parish school classes have started, and next week we celebrate our School Festival. May we all look for ways to express our faith in works of service. In Jesus, Fr. Mike TODAY’S READINGS First Reading—The Lord GOD is my help; who will prove me wrong? (Isaiah 50:5-9a). Psalm—I will walk before the Lord, in the land of the living (Psalm 116). Second Reading—Faith, if it does not have works, is dead (James 2:14-18). Gospel—Jesus asked his disciples, “Who do you say that I am?” (Mark 8:27-35). St. Therese of Lisieux is the patroness of missionaries although she never left her convent. She died at the early age of 24, yet accomplished great things through the power of prayer before Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. The church made her the patroness of missionaries to emphasize this most important truth: One soul coming before the Blessed Sacrament can change the world! St. Therese said, “My mission is to make God loved.” May she intercede for us in spreading Eucharistic Adoration throughout the world! “FAITH AND WORKS” Queson of the Week… Adults: Why should faith always lead to good works? You are invited to Come to the Quiet— A Silent Retreat for Women New to the Experience of Silence October 2—4, 2015 at Way of the Wolf Bed & Breakfast & Retreat Center located between Kerrville & Fredericksburg Retreat Focus: “Be Still and Know That I Am God” (Psalm 46:10) Leave the busyness and noise behind for one weekend and spend it listening to God speak to your heart, refresh your spirit, and rest your soul in His presence. A silent retreat is less about not talking for a weekend; it is more about listening for a lifetime. “Silence is never merely the cessation of words. Rather it is the pause that holds together all the words. Silence is the fullness, not emptiness; it is not absence, but the awareness of a presence.” (John Chryssavgis from In the Heart of the Desert; The Spirituality of the Desert Fathers and Mothers). Retreat cost of $160.00 includes accommodations, meals, a book on prayer, and one hour of spiritual direction. A $60.00 non-refundable deposit is required with registration. Financial assistance is available. All team members are formed through St. Peter Upon the Water: A Center for Spiritual Direction and Formation. Registration forms and further information can be obtained in the pink folder located in the narthex of the church or by contacting Sallie West at (830)896-9378 or Dora Bill at St. Peter Upon the Water (830)3675959. What happens in a community when churches, with a diversity of faith disciplines, set aside those differences and come together to celebrate what we have in common? The love of Jesus increases, and darkness gets displaced. That community becomes a place where God releases a commanded blessing. When we set aside our egos, labels and logos[[when we embrace the unity in diversity that is the body of Christ[[the world will taste and see Jesus in a fresh and different way. THE GATHERING @ ANTLER STADIUM is an opportunity: • to spend a day serving and celebrating in the name of Jesus • to bless Kerr County • to worship and pray together in an open expression of our faith • to celebrate what God has done, and is doing, in Kerr County. • to be inspired to be difference-makers in our community. Lives will be changed. History will be made. We will never be the same. Save the date: SATURDAY, OCTOBER 3 THE GATHERING @ ANTLER STADIUM Community service projects will start at 8:00 AM[more details coming soon.
