Twenty-First Sunday in Ordinary Time
The Rock on Which
the Church is Built
In the Gospel Reading, Christ tells Peter
that Peter is the rock on which Christ
will found his church. And, Jesus
promises, the gates of hell will not
prevail against this rock or against the
church built on it.
This is a comforting thought, isn’t it? In
the darkness of the world, there is something—the apostle Peter,
the Church—that evil cannot wreck!
The problem is that it so often looks as if the gates of hell have
prevailed against Christ’s Church.
Actually, the problem begins with Peter. This apostle, who was
supposed to be the rock of the Church, betrayed the Lord he
loved in his Lord’s worst need. A betrayal like that seems to
have something hellish about it, doesn’t it?
As far as that goes, how does Peter differ from Judas? Judas
betrayed Christ too, of course. In fact, the Gospel of John says
that Satan entered into Judas before he went to the Pharisees to
conspire with them to get Jesus (John 13:27). There is certainly
something hellish about the treachery of Judas if Satan entered
into him.
So why not think that the gates of hell prevailed against Peter
too, in his betrayal of Christ? What is left of Jesus’ promise that
the gates of Hell will not prevail against Peter or against
Christ’s Church?

categories listed by your last name:

title of “Best Salsa of St. Didacus” and

But notice that there is a difference between Judas and Peter.
You might think the difference is that Peter repented and Judas
didn’t. But there you would be mistaken. The Gospel of Matthew makes it clear that Judas repented, too (Matthew 27:3).
So, here is the real difference between them. When Judas saw
the sin of his betrayal for what it was, he killed himself. He
threw himself away as hopeless, as irredeemable. But Peter
came back to Christ. He cleaved to the Lord he loved even in
the face of his own betrayal of him.
And that is why Peter is the rock on which the Church is
founded. The Church is not a collection of the sinless, and it was
not meant to be. The Church was founded on Peter, who loved,
and sinned, and held on to the Lord anyway. The gates of Hell
cannot prevail against this kind of love.
This is a deeply comforting thought.
—Eleonore Stump, Professor of Philosophy, Saint Louis University
On the Cover:
Pope Francis is pictured here holding the relics of
St. Peter during a Mass at St. Peter’s Square on
Sunday, November 24th, 2013 which celebrated
the end of the Church’s Year of Faith. It was the
first time since their discovery in 1940 that the
Catholic Church has displayed the relics, which are
housed in a bronze display box. During the Mass
the bronze box was placed on an altar and opened
to show the bone fragments inside.

The papacy is a great gift to the Church, uniting Catholics with each
other around the world and down through history. In his teaching,
the pope continues to fulfill the office of “rock” that Jesus conferred on Peter, providing stability to the faith of the Church so that
we can journey with confidence on our way to God’s kingdom.

“In dangers, in doubts, in difficulties, think of

And that you may more surely obtain the assistance of her prayer, neglect not to walk in her

Knights of Columbus
Establish a Christian
Refugee Relief Fund
The Knights of Columbus
has established a fund to
assist those – particularly Christians as well
as other religious minorities – facing a horrific and violent persecution and possible extinction in Iraq and the surrounding regions. The Knights has pledged an initial $500,000 and will
match an additional $500,000 in donations from the public.
“The unprovoked and systematic persecution and violent elimination of Middle East Christians, as well as other minority
groups, especially in Iraq, has created an enormous humanitarian crisis,” said Supreme Knight Carl Anderson. “Pope Francis
has asked the world for prayers and support for those affected
by this terrible persecution, and we are asking our members,
and all people of good will, to pray for those persecuted and
support efforts to assist them by donating to this fund.” Anderson added: “It has shocked the conscience of the world that
people are systematically being purged from the region where
their families have lived for millennia – simply for their faith. It is
imperative that we stand in solidarity with them in defense of
the freedom of conscience, and provide them with whatever
relief we can.”
Those seeking to assist with the relief efforts can donate to K of
C Christian Refugee Relief by visiting www.kofc.org/Iraq or by
sending checks or money orders to: K of C Christian Refugee
Relief, Knights of Columbus Charities, P.O. Box 1966, New
Haven, CT 06509-1966.
Peter the Rock
What images does the name Saint Peter
bring to your mind? The simple fisherman named Simon who was among the
first disciples called by Jesus? The
hopeful believer who first recognized
Jesus as the Messiah? The fearful
friend who denied Jesus three times? The leader of the early
Church, whom we recognize as the first Pope? Peter is all these
things and more. The Bible paints a picture of a very human
leader with sins and weaknesses along with many gifts and
great faith.
The author of Matthew uses a play on words to make a statement about Peter as the foundation of the Church. The new
name Jesus gives him—Peter—means “rock.” So Jesus is saying, “You are a rock, and on this rock I will build my church.”
the Catholic Church uses this Scripture passage as support for
its teaching on the Pope’s position as the spiritual leader and
highest authority of the Church. Peter’s primacy as the first of
Jesus’ Apostles is understood to be passed on to the current
Pope, through the succession of popes who go back the beginnings of the Church at Rome.
