A First for Survivor – San Juan del Sur!

T
he banana leaf and palm frond wraps have
been removed to reveal that the
Survivor TV series has awarded
this tourist town the honor of being
named in the prestigious series logo
that will be seen all over the world.
For the first time in the long
history of the show, the name of
the actual town the series was
filmed in will be used in that logo
(usually it's a country or a region
as in the last time they were here
with “Survivor Nicaragua”).
Jeff Probst, the Emmy Award
winning game show host and an
executive producer told Del Sur News;
“We are so excited to be back in
Nicaragua. Shooting in San Juan del Sur was
such a good experience that we pushed CBS to let
us come back here again. It offers so many qualities -- a
beautiful environment, great local people to work with and the
necessary support from the government”. Continued on Page 4.

Se han eliminado las envolturas de hoja de plátano y palma para revelar que la serie de
televisión Survivor ha adjudicado a esta ciudad turística el honor de ser nombrado en el logo
de la prestigiosa serie que será visto por todo el mundo. Por primera vez en la larga historia
del espectáculo, se utilizará el nombre real de la ciudad donde fue filmada la serie en ese logo
(generalmente es un país o una región como la última vez que vinieron con "Survivor
Nicaragua").

Juan del Sur fue una buena experiencia que nos empujo a CBS volver aquí. Ofrece tantas
cualidades en un bello entorno, grandes personas locales para trabajar y con el apoyo
necesario del gobierno.

Este notable reality show de juego, es producido ahora en muchos países alrededor del
mundo, fue creado originalmente en 1992 por el productor de televisión británico Charlie
Parsons. El programa cuenta con concursantes que están aislados en varios entornos
naturales y remotos y compiten por un premio en efectivo de 1 millón de dólares. Durante la

Bar Republika is all set to return to its
“glory days” with new owners Caroline and
Adrian (from Belgium) who have been
living in SJdS for 2 years. New hours are
5pm to Midnight Tuesday to Saturday. Trivia
Tuesday, Poker Wednesday and the new and
very popular Music Trivia on Friday. In
June, breakfast will once again be served.
Big Wave Daves Farmers Market will
have some artwork for sale this weekend.
Also, the market is always looking for new
vendors so come and check out what you
think is missing.
BWDS Comedy Night was a huge success
with lots of raucous fun. Another one is
planned for about 3 weeks' time so “Get your
act together”!
Out with the old…the derelict building next
to the new library has finally been
demolished to make way for a new building.

estado viviendo en SJdS por 2 años. Nuevo
horario es de 5pm a la medianoche del martes
al sábado. Trivia el martes, Poker el
miércoles y la Trivia de música nueva y muy
popular el viernes. En algún momento en
junio, una vez más se servirá desayuno.
Farmers Market en Big Wave Daves este
fin de semana vendiendo arte. También, el
mercado está siempre buscando nuevos
vendedores ven y echa un vistazo qué crees
que está faltando.
BWDS la noche de comedia fue un éxito
enorme con un montón de diversión

SURVIVOR from Page 1...
This remarkable reality game show, now
produced in so many countries around the
world, was originally created in 1992 by the
British television producer Charlie Parsons.
The show features contestants who are
isolated in various natural and remote
settings and compete for A CASH PRIZE
OF 1 MILLION DOLLARS. During the
series, contestants are eliminated and “voted
off” the show by other tribe members until
only one contestant remains - the "Sole
Survivor."
In the USA alone, each series of
SURVIVOR (which produces 15 hours of
television) is watched by a primetime
audience of around 10 million viewers per
week.
SURVIVOR also airs in approximately 150
countries around the world reaching an
international audience in excess of 95
million viewers.

ŸOur large international crew of over 200
people loved the town and the access to all
the great local bars and restaurants, this
made it as crew favorite as far as locations
are concerned.
Ultimately, it was the friendship and support
we were shown by the people of Nicaragua
that made us really enjoy our experience last
time and want to return here to film another
two seasons.
SURVIVOR employs over 300 local
workers from the San Juan del Sur area. In
addition, they have filled both of San Juan el
Sur's larger and most popular hotels;Villas
de Palermo & Pelican Eyes Resort and Spa,
which in turn funnels visitors into the other
accommodation choices.

Jesse Jensen, a Survivor Producer told us
“The San Juan del Sur community was so
welcoming when we were here in 2010. It
was such a pleasure being here and was one
of the main reasons we decided to return to
film another two seasons of the show. We
just hope we are able to give back to the
community as much as we receive.” By way
of further explanation why they came back
and from a production point of view, Jensen
listed off the main reasons that decision was
made;

extremely good; INTUR and Pro Nicaragua
both supported the project and helped us
smooth out any issues throughout the
process.

recibido". A modo de explicación más
porqué vinieron y desde un punto de vista de
producción, Jensen enumera las principales
razones porque la decisión fue tomada;
Ÿ Un hermoso lugar para el show con un
montón de playas remotas para filmar, pero
con la gran logística muy cerca de San Juan
para alojamiento y suministros.
Ÿ Impresionantes equipos locales. Tienen
grandes habilidades, ética de trabajo y fue un
placer trabajar con ellos.
Ÿ El apoyo de la comunidad local fue
abrumador.
ŸLa Alcaldía de San Juan del Sur fue un gran
apoyo para nuestro proyecto y siempre
estuvieron ahí para ayudar. También jugaron
un papel integral en nuestro retorno.
ŸEl apoyo del gobierno nacional también fue
muy bueno; INTUR y Pro Nicaragua apoyó
el proyecto y nos ayudó a suavizar cualquier
problema durante todo el proceso.
ŸA nuestro gran equipo internacional de más
de 200 personas le encantó la ciudad y el
acceso a todos los bares locales y
restaurantes, este hecho fue favorito para el
equipo en cuanto se refieren a lugares.
En última instancia, fue la amistad y el
apoyo que ha mostrado el pueblo de
Nicaragua que nos hizo realmente disfrutar
nuestra experiencia la última vez y nos hizo
volver aquí para filmar otras dos
temporadas.
SURVIVOR emplea a más de 300
trabajadores locales de la zona de San Juan
del Sur. Además, han llenado los dos hoteles
más grandes y más populares de San Juan el
Sur; Villas de Palermo y Pelican Eyes Resort
y Spa, que a su vez canaliza a los visitantes
en las otras opciones de alojamiento.

Election Colombia – The race to become
president will go to a second round on June
15th between Rightwing candidate Óscar
Iván Zuluaga and the incumbent
PresidentJuan Manuel Santos. Last Sunday,
the second round was called with nearly all
polling stations counted and Zuluagawon
29.3 per cent of the vote and Santos
(President since 2010) won 25.6 per cent of
the vote.
Latest Popularity Contest – The Director
General of the Nicaraguan Police, First
Commissioner Aminta Granera has once
again topped the list of the most popular
Nicaraguan personalities in which the
President, Daniel Ortega was second. Cid
Gallup (Latin America) conducted the poll
this month by asking 1,203 people who they
like most out of a list of Nicaraguan pubic
personalities. Granera scored 79%
favorable opinion, 7% unfavorable and 14%
had no opinion. The President received a
score of 78% favorable, 12% unfavorable
and 10% had no opinion. First Lady Murillo
Zambrana in third scored 72% favorable,
16% unfavorable and 12% no opinion.
Drug Bust and Shoot Out - A drug bust on
the Pan American Highway turned
dangerous as shots were fired by the
traffickers as well as the National Police
causing an injury to at least one innocent
person in passing car. Nearly 235 kilos of
cocaine was later found hidden in a black
Honda Ridgeline truck bring Managua
plates. The frightening incident occurred at
about 6:30pm last Friday at the police
checkpoint near the Ochomogo Bridge
when the driver of the truck refused to stop.
Police gave chase, there was an exchange of
fire and the vehicle was stopped when it
tried to escape through a sugar cane field.
The person injured was a teacher who was
traveling in a passing car. She was treated at
hospital in Rivas for non -lifethreatening
injuries. There were no reports of any police
officers being injuries.
Poor Electrical Connections – Homes and
small businesses that don't meet the required
level of safety are ticking bombs say fire
specialists. In Managua, three fires in less
than a week were caused by bad electrical
connections. The main cause is overloading
the system after an initial fire inspection and
then installing too many devices on the

system that was approved for much less.
Experts found that the larger businesses with
more corporate responsibility met the
electrical and fire standards which were
much stricter than smaller businesses.
Bird Watching – A new project including an
International Bird Festival for Granada was
announced last week which will be funded
(234, 000 Euros) by the European Union and
the Central Government of Nicaragua and
implemented by INTUR and the Fundación
Cocibolca with technical support from the
Agency for Cooperation of the Grand Duchy
of Luxembourg. The objective is to promote
the natural and cultural potential of the
Apoyo, Mombacho and Zapatera (AMZ)
areas in a sustainable manner. They have
chosen the local cooperatives of Claudia
Chamorro and La Granadilla, the Rural
Tourist Project Charco Muerto, Finca
Laguna Azul (Apoyo) and Hotel Santa
María on the Isla Zapatera and Finca La
Calera on the Lake Nicaragua to help
support the project. The organizers aim to
create employment in the rural areas with the
construction of tourism infrastructure. The
second part of the project is the execution of
the International Bird Festival in November.
The area has islets, lagoons, wetlands,
Mombacho cloud forests and dry forests on
Zapatera and are home to a total of 270
species of birds at various times of the year.
Nicaragua Joins the Lobbyists - The
government of Nicaragua has engaged the
services of Akin Gump to work on the
Central America-Dominican RepublicUnited States Free Trade Agreement
(CAFTA-DR) that took effect in 2006. In
particular they will work on the tax-free
access to textiles from the United States
which makes Nicaragua an attractive place
for U.S. based apparel businesses to produce
clothing in Zona Francs (Tax Free Zones).
Under CAFTA, clothing manufactures in
Nicaragua can import U.S. fabrics duty-free
and then manufacture some apparel that can
be sold back to America under the same
arrangement. Lobbyists say textile exports
from America to Nicaragua increased 60
percent after the trade deal was struck. A
Duke University (USA) study states that
more than 1,000 U.S. textile and
manufacturing jobs depend on the
Nicaraguan textile agreement. Despite the
deal, Nicaragua (the poorest of the Central
American countries) still has a much smaller
apparel industry than some of its neighbors.

Patron Saint with the

The Vice Mayor; Randall Granja and
members of the team that are leading the
organization of festivities in honor of St.
John the Baptist (San Juan Bautista) in the
municipality reported that they have
already began preparations for the big
celebration.
Granja said that this year a novel selection
process of candidates for the various
Queens of the Festivities dedicated to the
Patron Saint of the Sanjuaneños will be that
the selected applicants will have to get
involved in the community with community
service and must the present a community
and social plan for the future.
Granja explained that the candidates will
have to find the votes for their coronation
from the people. As well there will be a
panel of judges who will be the people who
will study the work of each candidate and
decide on a winner. He clarified that the
would-be Queens will sell tickets and
donate the money from the sale of bonds to
implement social and community projects
that they choose.
On May 19th, the Bull Ring was located
opposite the main entrance of the
neighborhood Carlos Holmann (Barrio
Nuevo) located to the east of the urban
area. The first activities begin on the last
days of May and finish June 24th with the
Patron Saint vigil and journey through the
main streets of the tourist port.

convertirse en Presidente irá a una segunda
ronda el 15 de junio entre el candidato

todas las mesas electorales contadas y

Quiebre de Drogas y Disparos - Una
incautación de droga en la carretera

Avistamiento de Aves – Un nuevo proyecto,
incluyendo un Festival Internacional de las
Aves en Granada, fue anunciado la semana
pasada y será financiado con (234, 000
Euros) por la Unión Europea y el Gobierno
Central de Nicaragua e implementado por el
INTUR y la Fundación Cocibolca con el
apoyo técnico de la Agencia de Cooperación
del Gran Ducado de Luxemburgo. El
objetivo es promover el potencial natural y
cultural de las áreas de Apoyo, Mombacho y
Zapatera (AMZ) de una manera sostenible.
Han elegido las cooperativas locales Claudia
Chamorro y La Granadilla, el proyecto de
Turismo Rural Charco Muerto, Finca
Laguna Azul (Apoyo) y Hotel Santa María
en la Isla Zapatera y Finca La Calera en el
lago de Nicaragua para ayudar a apoyar el
proyecto. Los organizadores pretenden crear
empleo en las zonas rurales con la
construcción de infraestructura turística. La
segunda parte del proyecto es la realización
del Festival Internacional de Aves en
noviembre. El área tiene islotes, lagunas,
humedales, bosques nublados y bosques
secos en Mombacho y Zapatera son el hogar
de un total de 270 especies de aves en
distintas épocas del año.

entonces fabricar algunas prendas de vestir
que pueden venderse a América bajo el

El vice alcalde Lic. Randall Granja,
miembros del equipo que encabeza la
organización de las fiestas patronales en
honor San Juan Bautista en el municipio,
informó que ya iniciaron los preparativos
para la gran celebración.
Granja, dijo que este año el proceso de
selección de candidatas a reinas de las
fiestas patronales dedicadas al santo
patrono de los sanjuaneños, tendrá como
novedoso que las aspirantes seleccionadas
tendrán que ir al pueblo y poner en práctica
la solidaridad , además cada una de ella
deberán presentar un proyecto
comunitario y social.
Granja, explicó que las candidatas tendrán
que buscar los votos para su coronación
entre el pueblo, comentó que no habrá un
jurado calificador, ya que será el pueblo
quien decidirá que candidata será la
ganadora, aclaro que las aspirantes a reina
venderán bonos, donaran el dinero de la
venta de bonos para ejecutar los proyectos
sociales y comunitarios que ellas elijan.
Este 19 de mayo inició la instalación de la
barrera de toros, localizada frente a la
entrada principal del barrio Carlos Holmann
o Barrio Nuevo ubicado al este de la zona
urbana, las primeras actividades festivas
inician en los últimos días de mayo para
culminar el próximo 24 de junio con la vela
del santo patrono y recorrido por las
principales calles del puerto turístico.

Coffee Producers Receive Training

On May 23rd, about 50 producers from the north of the country received training
on the use of new production technologies in coffee cultivation at an activity that
was given by the technicians of CISA AGRO (International Commercial
Agriculture) in the facilities of the Civic Center of the Municipality of San Juan del
Sur.
Coffee producer Vicente Alberto Gadea (originating from Jinotega) said that the
training will help them to improve the productivity per unit of cultivated areas and
said that the plantations of coffee in Jinotega are being renewed using new
technologies and are cultivating a variety of coffee that is more resistant to the
plague of rust (roya).
He added that trainers demonstrated their abilities and discussed the experience
and knowledge gained in the cultivation of coffee in other Central American
countries. They also learned about the price of coffee in the world and its
fluctuations on the world market.
Gadea said “The coffee producers in the north are collecting an average of 35
quintals (100 pound sacks) of export coffee per Manzana (about 1.7 acres)”. He
also thanked the agency for financing the training on the improvement of the
techniques of growing Café Oro.

Unos 50 productores del norte del país recibieron el 23 de mayo una capacitación
sobre el uso de nuevas tecnologías productivas en el cultivo de café, la actividad
fue impartida por los técnicos de CISA AGRO en las instalaciones del centro cívico
del municipio de San Juan del Sur.
El productor cafetalero, Vicente Alberto Gadea, originario de Jinotega, dijo que la
capacitación les servirá para mejorar la productividad por unidad de áreas
cultivadas, recordó que los plantíos de café en Jinotegana se están renovando
utilizando las nuevas tecnologías, se está cultivando una variedad de café que es
más resistente a la plaga de la roya.
Agregó, que los capacitadores demostraron sus capacidades experiencia y
conocimiento en el cultivo de café que han experimentado en el resto de países
centroamericano, además expusieron sobre el precio del grano de café en el mundo
y sus fluctuaciones en el mercado mundial.
Gadea dijo; que los productores de café del norte están recogiendo un promedio de
35 quintales de café para exportación por manzana, así mismo agradeció a las
agencia de financiamiento por la capacitaciones sobre el mejoramiento de las
técnicas de cultivos del grano de oro.

La 8va Liga de Baloncesto Masculino Mayor se
encuentra en semi-finales al mejor de 5 partidos y Los
Cleaner ganaron sus 2 primeros partidos contra Los
Lakers con marcadores 54 a 45 y 36 a 32. En la
segunda serie Rivas también derrotó en sus 2
primeros partidos a los Shaina Tonw con pizarra de 53
a 41 y 61 a 55. Las series continuaron el martes y
miércoles en el Parque Deportivo donde los Shaina
Town y Los Lakers tienen que ganar los 3 partidos que
faltan para lograr pasar a la final 2014. Los líderes

SEGUNDA VUELTA.
La Liga Juvenil Sub 19 esta semana cerró la segunda
vuelta con 8 equipos participantes donde los primeros
6 equipos pasaran a una tercera vuelta para después
definir quiénes serán los 4 equipos que estarán en la
etapa semi-final, estos partidos se están desarrollando
desde las 6:30 pm en el Parque Deportivo.
LA LIGA DE BEISBOL INFANTIL
Se encuentra en su segunda vuelta con los 6 equipos
participantes, Los Delfines de La Auxiliadora
recuperaron el primer lugar con balance de 11
ganados y 3 perdidos, Los Cachorros de don Porfirio
con 9 y 5, Las Pampas 8 y 4, El Bastón 7 y 5, Los
Caimanes de Las Delicias 3 y 11 y Los Tigres del
Ojochal con 2 y 12. Este sábado los partidos serán en
