San Antonio prepares Estudiantes harán viaje
de buena voluntad
to fight Zika virus

In San Antonio, the Metropolitan Health District has confirmed only seven cases of the
Zika virus; however, the Alamo
city is being proactive to limit
any more infections.
The Children’s Hospital of
San Antonio hosted a free symposium, “From A to Zika” on
Wednesday morning to highlight everything there is to know
about the disease that originated
in Central America; and, most
importantly, how to contain and
treat the virus in Texas.
On hand to conduct the conference were Peter Hotez, MD,
PhD, dean of the Baylor College
of Medicine National School of
Tropical Medicine; Anil Mangla
MS, PhD, MPH, FRIPH, assistant director of San Antonio Metropolitan Health District Communicable Disease Division;
Luis Castagnini, MD, MPH,
Infectious Disease specialist and
chair of The Children’s Hospital
of San Antonio Zika Task Force;
and Marisol Garcia-Hodge, MD,
obstetrician/gynecologist at The
Children’s Hospital.
During the conference, Dr.
Mangla stated the importance
of informing the community,
as well as to provide them with
the next steps if Zika were to
become an epidemic.
“This is about what we knew
then and what we know now,
and I must say that we have
come a long way into what we
can do for San Antonio. It is time
to close the book on infectious
diseases,” he said.
The Zika virus is originated
from same family as Yellow
Fever, West Nile, Chikungunya
and Dengue. It can be transmitted through the bite of infected
Aedes Aegypti mosquitoes, from
a pregnant mother to her baby
during pregnancy or around
the time of birth and sometimes
through sexual activity or blood
transfusion.
Most people that are infected
with Zika virus do not know that
they have the disease because
there are no visible symptoms
in many occasions. The most
common symptoms of Zika
include fever, rash, joint pain,
conjunctivitis (red eyes), muscle
pain and headache.
The incubation period for
Zika virus disease is not known,
but is likely to be a few days to
a week.
In order to liquidate the Zika
Virus, the community must take
personal responsibility to prevent mosquitoes from breeding
and to protect ourselves from
mosquito bites. Every year,
mosquitoes kill 785,000 people,
according to Dr. Mangla.
Mosquitoes can develop
within 12-19 days if there is
water retention. Residents must
prevent mosquitoes from laying
eggs inside and outside of their
home by emptying, scrubbing

grupo de estudiantes residentes
de San Antonio que viajarán
como embajadores de buena
voluntad a China, Israel, Inglaterra y Francia, así como a
la ciudad de Washington D.C.
Representantes del grupo de
jóvenes viajeros participaron
el martes 14 de junio en una
recepción del capítulo local
de Sister Cities Internacional.
La reunión fue presidida por
el Concejal del Distrito No.
8 Ron Nirenberg, en su capacidad de miembro del comité
nacional de esta organización
multinacional.
Representantes de instituciones oficiales y educativas
se reunieron el martes 14 en
el Centro Internacional de la
Ciudad de San Antonio con
motivo de las actividades de
aniversario de Sister Cities International, organismo creado
por el Presidente Dwight D.
Eisenhower con el propósito
de crear vínculos de armonía,
entendimiento y buena voluntad entre comunidades alre
dedor del mundo.
En esta oportunidad Ivy
Taylor, alcaldesa de la ciudad
de San Antonio, entregó una
proclama en reconocimiento
a SCI integrado por un conglomerado de instituciones
del sector privado y agencias
gubernamentales.
La alcaldesa agregó que
desde un principio la ciudad
de San Antonio abrazó este
proyecto de entendimiento,
enlazando formalmente prime
ro con la ciudad de Monte
rrey, a la que siguieron varias
ciudades alrededor del mundo.
Se informó que 27 alumnos
de la escuela Robert E. Lee
High School visitarán durante
el verano la ciudad de Wuxi
en China.
Otros 35 estudiantes y 15
adultos forman un segundo
grupo que en breve partirá
hacia Francia e Inglaterra; actividades promovidas y coordinadas por Summer of Service.
El maestro de High School,
Amir Samandi, nativo de la
ciudad de San Antonio, creó
Summer of Service con el objeto de interesar a los jóvenes
en actividades productivas
aprovechando las vacaciones
de verano, y, al mismo tiempo,
imbuir la noble idea de solidaridad con otros pueblos y
aprender de sus culturas.

dollars for a local organization, the American GI Forum
National Veterans Outreach
Program, Inc.
“San Antonio is Military
City not only because of those
in uniform who serve today,
but also for the many veterans who call it home. These
federal dollars will help transition skills veterans learned in
uniform to restart their careers
and boost our local economy,”
said Rep. Lloyd Doggett.
“We are excited about the
opportunity to continue to
serve veterans, especially
homeless veterans, and help
them back into a mode of
sustainability by obtaining
employment through these
programs,” said Ignacio Leija,
vice president of Service Operations.

Finish Line fits hundreds of SA Youth kids with free running shoes
More than 360 SA Youth
kids are walking a little lighter
these days and, in some cases,
running as fast as a roadrunner thanks to the Finish Line
Youth Foundation, which fitted them recently with a free
pair of running shoes.
“We’re thrilled to support
SA Youth and provide their
youth centers with sports
equipment to help create
more healthy and active lifestyles,” said Marty Posch,
president of Finish Line
Youth Foundation.
“As part of our partnership,
we’re also excited to welcome
360 kids into our stores over
the next months to receive
one pair of shoes each.”
After picking a pair of
bright red running shoes
with the assistance of a Finish Line employee at Finish
Line’s Ingram Park Mall
store, 10-year-old Alex stood
staring at his shoes with a big
smile on his face. “I’m really
happy to get these shoes.
They feel great,” he said. “I’m
ready to go running.”
Cynthia Le Monds, president and CEO of SA Youth,
said that many of the kids
are members of SA Youth’s
Running Club and did not
have proper running shoes.
“This gift is just what our
kids need as they run for
health and fitness,” she said.
“On behalf of all our kids, SA
Youth thanks the Finish Line
Youth Foundation for the
hundreds of shoes they have
so generously donated. Our
kids are just elated, and we
can see the look of happiness
on their faces.”

St. Philip’s College to offer a 23-credit program in massage therapy
St. Philip’s College is ushering in a new labor force
badly needed for those entering the massage therapy
field and for people who
utilize massage therapy services as part of a complementary and alternative
medical practice.
The school is helping to
connect current and prospective massage therapists
with an innovative program
that prepares them for graduation from the first college
in Texas to offer a college
credit program in massage
therapy www.alamo.edu/

“We want to let students
know that this is a brand
new program that earns
them 23 credits that will
prepare them for graduation
from the first college in Texas to offer an Associate of
Science Degree in Massage
Therapy,” said John Braxton, college massage therapy program director. “With
the positive changes in the
Health Care and Affordable
Care Acts, massage therapy
is considered a therapeutic
form of wellness, which
means that it is now eligible
for payment through insur-
ance companies, and this is
unprecedented. Alumni of
our program can finally be
higher-paid parts of a medical team that provides treatment to a variety of clients.
And it’s also a good wellness benefit for folks under
most insurance companies.”

service levels. The format resembles a countdown, with
Level IV stating a normal/
routine condition and Level I
representing a maximum readi-
ness/excessive heat warning.
The heat plan provides information on how individuals can
prepare for, prevent, recognize
and cope with heat-related
health problems.
Additionally, the plan provides a list of local agencies
which will furnish heat-related
assistance during extreme heat
weather conditions. We encourage individuals to share
this plan with anyone who
might utilize this information.

Metro Health issues
heat outlook level III
The San Antonio Metropolitan Health District (Metro
Health) is notifying the community of a level III “heat
outlook.”
Level III indicates a sustained
heat index between 90 and
108 degrees Fahrenheit for
two consecutive days. Always
remember to never leave children or pets alone in vehicles,
especially during heat advisory
periods.
With increasing heat, Metro
Health reminds the community
to take precautions including
proper hydration and protection from the sun. Additionally, people should check on
their neighbors, especially the
elderly, children or those with
special needs, to ensure access
to heat relief and hydration.

Reto nacional de salud para mujeres resulta en
un movimiento hacia una vida más saludable

“Dale Ritmo y Alcanza 100”
(junio - agosto): Haz 30 minutos
de cardio al día, por lo menos
cinco días por semana y bebe
al menos 100 onzas de agua
por día.
“Corre y Suelta lo Salado” (septiembre - noviembre): Haz 30
minutos de actividad física, por
lo menos cinco días a la semana
y limitar el consumo de sodio a

Comentarios... ¿Puede alguien juzgar a Trump?

sabe realmente qué
hay dentro
de la cabeza
de Donald
Trump. Pero
Jorge Ramos
sí sabemos
qué es lo que sale de su boca.
Y lo que salió hace poco es
la definición de lo que es un
comentario claramente racista,
según dijo el líder del Congreso
estadounidense, el republicano
Paul Ryan.
Seamos claros. Es racismo
cuando se rechaza, discrimina
o descalifica a alguien por el
simple hecho de pertenecer
a un grupo étnico o racial.
Punto. Y eso es exactamente
lo que hizo Trump al decir que
el juez, Gonzalo Curiel, nacido
en Indiana de inmigrantes de
México, no podía ser imparcial en un caso judicial — que
involucra a la Universidad
Trump — por su herencia
mexicana. Según el torcido y
falso argumento del candidato
republicano a la presidencia, el
juez Curiel tiene un conflicto
de interés. Trump no ve cómo
un latino puede ser justo con
él después que anunció que
quiere construir un muro entre
México y Estados Unidos.
Las prejuiciadas declaraciones de Trump me recordaron
una entrevista que le hice en
el 2013 a la juez de la Corte
Suprema de Justicia, Sonia
Sotomayor. Hay mucha gente
que cree que el latino no tiene
la capacidad de hacer las cosas
bien, me dijo en español. Y
luego me dio su fórmula para
enfrentar a los racistas: No me
dejé discriminar.
En política nada es coincidencia. Trump, en unos pocos
días, criticó públicamente a
cuatro hispanos prominentes:
al juez Curiel, a la gobernadora republicana de Nueva
México, Susana Martinez, y a
los periodistas Tom Llamas de
la cadena ABC y Jim Acosta
de CNN.
Los ataques de Trump no se
han limitado a los hispanos. En
una entrevista con la cadena
CBS, Trump dijo que sería
posible que un juez musulmán
también estuviera prejuiciado
en su contra debido a su propuesta de prohibir la entrada
a Estados Unidos a 1.600
millones de musulmanes en
el mundo. Trump, aparentemente, no quiere que jueces de
origen mexicano o musulmán
lo juzguen. Eso se llama discriminación.
Trump se está quedando solo
en este asunto. Ryan dijo que
sus comentarios eran absolutamente inaceptables. Y el líder
del Senado, Mitch McConnell,
dijo a NBC que no podía estar
más en desacuerdo, en las pala
bras de Trump. Sin embargo,
la gran contradicción de estos
líderes republicanos es que los
dos han dicho que votarán por
Trump. No dejan de sorprenderme los políticos que hacen
verdaderos malabarismos verbales criticando el racismo de
Trump pero manteniéndose fiel
a su candidato.
Los comentarios racistas
de Trump están creando un
verdadero dilema moral entre
los republicanos y los votantes
independientes: Si votas o
apoyas a un candidato que
hace comentarios racistas ¿qué
dice eso de ti como persona?
Trump, desde luego, se ha
metido en serios problemas
con sus controversiales declaraciones en el pasado y siempre
ha salido adelante. No dudo
que este sea también el caso.
Dirá, como suele decir, que
no dijo lo que dijo o que lo
malinterpretaron. Pero todo
se lo pudieran cobrar el 8 de
noviembre, el día de las elecciones.
“Amo a la gente mexicana”,
ha dicho Trump en sus discursos y él cree que le va a ir
bien con los hispanos el día
de la votación. Pero, muchos
latinos no lo quieren. Solo el
20 por ciento de los votantes
latinos lo apoyaría, según una
encuesta de NBC y el Wall

In my case, my father passed
away at the age of 62 in 1985.
My grandfather (his father)
passed away at 65 in 1962.
As a teenager, I visited with
my grandfather maybe three
or four times before we moved
for the umpteenth time.
Growing up in the 50s, I
remember Father’s Day at
my house as not being overly
memorable as a little kid. Later
as the teenager in the 60s, I
remember the family would
load up the car with my five
younger brothers, mother,
father and me, and we would
trek to a local restaurant for
that special Sunday meal celebrating fatherhood.
Since there were so many of
us, we usually were forced to
wait much longer than smaller
families for a table. Most of
the time, they had to pull
two or more tables together
so we could all crowd in and
fit around the tables for the
Father’s Day meal.
Once I graduated high
school in upper state New
York, I left to attend college
in Fort Worth and was not
around for those celebrations
after that.
Ironically, when I worked as
a weekend reporter at KENS-5
Eyewitness News in 1982, my
very first assignment was to do
a Father’s Day story on George
Cisneros, the father of then
mayor Henry Cisneros, who I
have previously written a column on for “Just a Thought.”
It was exciting visiting him
at his home and interviewing
him about his family’s Father’s
Day traditions since I had
previously served in the Army
Reserves with him in the 70s
long before I met the mayor.
He was my unit comman-
dant at the 90th ARCOM
on Harry Wurzbach Road.
Every Monday night, (Reserve
meeting) I would report in at
the ARCOM and either pass
him in the hallway or report
directly to Colonel Cisneros
office for assignments for the
evening. I do recall standing
in front of him in his office
smartly saluting him until he
returned my salute.
By the time I interviewed
him for the story, he had retired from the Reserves and I
would run into him at the local
gym where we both worked
out. In some ways, he reminded me of my own father.
During our workouts, we
would visit and talk family.

La gran ironía de esta elección
es que los mismos ataques a los
hispanos, que tanto impulsaron
la candidatura de Trump, serán
los que terminarán finalmente
con sus aspiraciones presidenciales. Los mexicanos tienen un
dicho muy sabio: El que ríe al
último, ríe mejor.

Just a Thought: Father’s Day
some years later, and I attended his funeral that attracted
hundreds of family, friends and
mourners. In conversations
with Henry and his family at
that time, he shared that his
dad was a great father.
I was privileged to have
served with that great father,
spend time with him militarily
and in the gym. Eventually, I
reunited with my own father
for his last two Father’s Days
celebrations here in San Antonio before he too passed away.
Today is the day to spend
with your father, be it at his
home, yours or perhaps at a
local restaurant. Either way,
Happy Father’s Day.
And a special Happy Father’s Day to the founder of La

husband of Millie, the father of
Nina, David, Steve and Tino

Trump piensa y habla el mismo idioma de los racistas

Martin H, Millard, el racista de Costa Mesa, California,
que se infiltró en el gobierno
de esta ciudad a inicios del
2000, es uno de los miles
de neonazis que finalmente
encontraron un candidato
a la presidencia de su talla.
Donald Trump predica toda
la absurda ideología, los
prejuicios sociales y el racismo enfermizo de esta gente.
De los millones de votantes que Trump dice haber
persuadido para adjudicarse
la nominación de los republi
canos, un gran porcentaje
proviene de estos grupos
que, anteriormente, prestaban muy poca atención a las
elecciones presidenciales.
Antes, estos radicales de la
derecha eran los parias del
sistema político y de la sociedad norteamericana. Con
la candidatura de Trump
han salido de sus nichos, de
sus guaridas impregnadas
de racismo y han logrado
movilizarse en la sociedad
en forma masiva.
Allá en la década de 2000,
Millard y un grupo de políticos extremistas secuestraron
al gobierno local de Costa
Mesa. Después de haber conseguido su objetivo principal
–es decir, después de colocar
a sus propios correligiona
rios en el gobierno de la alcaldía, en el cual Millard fue
uno de sus comisionados—,
legislaron ordenanzas racistas contra la comunidad latina desde el gobierno local.
Del mismo modo y a nivel
nacional, estos grupos de extrema derecha tienen intenciones malsanas después de
lograr su objetivo principal:
la Casa Blanca. En este sentido, Trump es un político
que hace referencia a sus más
íntimos ideales racistas. Su
política de cerrar la frontera
mexicana-estadounidense y
no permitir que algún mexicano cruce la frontera es un
sueño largamente expresado
por los segregacionistas.
Millard y su gente critican
fervientemente el multiculturalismo existente en la
sociedad norteamericana.
En sus escritos sostiene que
la relación de una persona
de ascendencia europeanorteamericana (blanca) con
otra persona no-europea (latina, asiática, afroamericana,
etc.) es una contradicción a
la evolución de la naturaleza
humana.
En vez hacerse más “inteligentes”, sugiere Millard, los
europeos-norteamericanos
se hacen más “tontos” una
vez que mezclan sus cromosomas con otro tipo de
gente que no es la suya. De
acuerdo a esta perspectiva,
Estados Unidos está en un
retroceso histórico debido,
especialmente, al incremento
de grupos raciales inferiores
y a la disminución gradual de
norteamericanos de descendencia europea.
El hecho de que Trump
prefiere, como esposas o
como parejas sexuales, a mujeres de ascendencia europea,
los segregacionistas como
Millard ven como un acier
to personal que todos los
norteamericanos-europeos
deberían imitar. Esta gente
racista ha sido muy crítica
al hecho de que Jeb Bush
haya contraído matrimonio
con una mexicana. Millard
considera que este tipo de
relaciones “interraciales” es
como un “genocidio contra
la raza blanca a través del
matrimonio”.
Así, estamos entrando en
un proceso político bastante
delicado. Tenemos dos can-
didatos políticos que son
prácticamente muy diferentes
no solamente en su ideología
política al interior del país
sino también en el ámbito
internacional.

mas de CNN, tiene muy claro
la película con relación a la
candidatura de Trump. “Secuestró a mi partido político”
dijo, pero también aseveró
que “no va a votar por Trump
por ningún motivo”.
Muchos republicanos se
encuentran en la misma
encrucijada. Sin embargo,
la elección a la hora de votar es muy fácil. Votar por
un racista (Trump) o votar
por una persona (Hillary
Clinton) que, por lo menos,
encarna la misma ideología
política de la mayoría de los
estadounidenses.

LINDA PACE FOUNDATION PRESENTS: RIVANE
NEUENSCHWANDER-SECONDARY STORIES —
This spring, the Linda Pace Foundation presents the Texas
debut of “Secondary Stories,” a room-sized installation
by Brazilian artist Rivane Neuenschwander, who has become widely regarded for her often ephemeral work that
explores narratives about language, nature, social interactions and the passing of time. “Secondary Stories,” as well
as three video installation works, is open at SPACE, the
public gallery of the Linda Pace Foundation. The exhibit
will be on view through July 29, 2017 at Linda Pace

CONEY ISLAND AT THE MCNAY — The exhibition
explores and celebrates Coney Island, the most iconic,
uniquely American Amusement Park in the United States,
which has served as national cultural symbol inspiring artists, musicians, novelists, poets and filmmakers. From Coney Island’s beginning as a watering hole for the wealthy,
through its transformation into an entertainment mecca
for the masses, to the closing of Astroland Amusement

a su compañero de equipo (Joe

para tomar la delantera en la
penúltima vuelta de la carrera

Suárez al final cruzó la meta
con 0.280 segundos de ventaja

Suárez se convirtió en el
primer mexicano en ganar
una carrera de serie nacional
en NASCAR, tras recuperarse
de un castigo por exceso de

parques públicos más bellos y
funcionales que ofrece amplias
zonas de recreo para los niños,
quienes empezaron a disfrutar
de sus instalaciones desde el
sábado 11 de junio cuando fue
inaugurado.

municipales presidieron la ceremonia inaugural de Pearsall
Park. Este es un campo recreativo de 500 acres rodeado
de extensos campos y verdes
colinas donde se ha construido
una variedad de juegos: fuentes de agua que funcionan
permanentemente, mesas para
picnic y la pista de patinaje más
grande en la ciudad.

Fingers, y el refugio San
Antonio Pets Alive!, que es
una agencia protectora y de
adopción de perros y gatos,
en el partido Stars vs. Liberty
de Nueva York celebrado en
el renovado estadio multiusos
AT&T Center (sede de Stars)
celebraron exitosamente
la Noche de las Mascotas
(San Antonio Stars Hoops &
Hounds Game).
La noble afición respondió
al llamado de la gerencia y de
los patrocinadores llevando al
partido a sus respectivas mascotas, por las que pagaron
una módica cantidad por su
boleto de admisión.
El dinero que se generó
por admisión de mascotas
fue donado al programa de
adopción y rescate de perros
y gatos callejeros o que han
sido abandonados.
El refugio San Antonio Pets
Alive! (SAPA) es una agencia
que se dedica al cuidado de
animales, los cuales reciben todas las atenciones tanto físicas
como médicas.
San Antonio, por ser un municipio que evita la eutanasia
canina y felina, se ha definido
abierto a brindar toda la ayuda
correspondiente a las agencias
que se dedican al cuidado y
adopción de animales.
El público asistente que
llevó su o sus mascotas recibió una botella de agua
plegable (para darle de beber
agua a su mascota) y a la vez
participó en actividades en las
que sus animalitos mostraron
sus habilidades y educación.
Durante el partido, a través
de la pantalla central, se
transmitieron segmentos en
vivo de la promoción “Pooch
Smooch” (acariciando a la
mascota).
El entretenimiento del medio tiempo fue patrocinado
por Academy Sports + Outdoors. Por lo que se presentó
exitosamente el selecto grupo
de baile Dian Rendon AllStars.
Cerca de un centenar de
fans que llevaron donativos
de guantes de plástico, toallas
de papel y bolsas para guardar
basura recibieron certificados
para la compra de una caja
combo de pollo frito (Box
Combo), obsequiada por Raisin Cane’s Chicken Fingers.
Por su parte, Moriah Jefferson, guardia novata de Stars,
visitó el refugio para evaluar
la posibilidad de adoptar una
mascota.
“Tuve que hablar primero
con mamá para ver si ella
me apoyaba en adoptar un
cachorro. Ella me dio su respaldo y yo me di el gusto de
adoptar a un cachorro para así
apoyar el programa de SAPA”,
dijo Jefferson.
Kayla McBride (21), guardia estelar y capitana de Stars,
sobresalió con su veloz estilo de juego en la ofensiva y
defensiva, siendo en varias ocasiones ovacionada por fans
que acudieron a la tradicional “Stars Noche de Mascotas”.

Maratón de música en el Texas Folklife Fest

El fin de semana anterior
los asistentes al 45 aniversario
de Texas Folklife Festival disfrutaron de más de 20 horas
continuas de bailables folclóricos, cocina internacional
y otras amenidades para toda
la familia en cinco escenarios
instalados en el Institute of
Texas Cultures (Plaza de la
Hemisferia).
El tan esperado festival em-
pezó el viernes 12 de junio a
las 5 de la tarde terminando
ese día a las 10 de la noche,
para continuar de 11 de la
mañana a 10 de la noche el
sábado y domingo 11 y 12 de
junio. En ese lapso de tiempo
los foros estuvieron activos
constantemente con la actuación de grupos y academias
de danza folclórica de diversos
países.
El atractivo musical estuvo
acompañado de una variedad
culinaria para satisfacer el
gusto de todos los asistentes.

and Barnum and Bailey are
preparing to bring “The Greatest Show On Earth” to the
Alamo City with an unforgettable show that will leave
many jumping for joy.
Circus Xtreme is coming to
San Antonio and offer shows
from Thursday, June 30 to
Monday, July 4 at the AT&T
Center, 1 AT&T Center Pkwy,
to give the audience the opportunity to explore a world of
flexibility, beauty and dexterity in ways many have never
seen before.
The show is ready to transform the traditional show and
amplify into never-beforeseen spectacles, fast-paced
performances and incredibly
hilarious moments making it
the ultimate family experience.

Centro Cultural Aztlán desde
que empezó a presentar en
1977 el Día de los Muertos
y empezó a presentar la celebración del 2 de febrero para
conmemorar el Tratado de
Guadupe-Hidalgo”, comentó
la directora.
La organización también
desarrolló actividades como el
Lowrider Festival y el Superhero Exhibition para estudiantes
de escuelas, las cuales llevan
ya más de 35 años de estarse

En 2006 se desarrollaba el
proyecto Commercial Revitalization Corridor en la zona
de Frederickburg Road con
la intención de revitalizar las
tiendas y negocios de la zona,
que estaban desapareciendo,
añadió Gonzalez.
Fue entonces cuando la ciudad le dio a la oportunidad al
Centro Cultural Aztlán de reubicarse en el Deco Building.
Ahora en dicha zona, funcionan de nuevo el Woodlawn
Theatre y “tiene la concentración más grande de artistas
que radican en esta área”,

“This last year I was affected with my own personal
battle with prostate cancer.
Fortunately, it was caught
early and the cancer is gone,”
stated Eugene Simor, founder
and CEO of Alamo Beer Company. “That’s why Fatherfest
is important. It’s not only
a great time for families; it
brings awareness to some very
important men’s health issues.
We are proud to be partnering
with Kiolbassa to support this
cause. ” concluded Simor.
According to the National
Cancer Institute’s, it is estimated that in 2016 there will
be over 180,000 new cases of
prostate cancer in the United
States. Early detection is key in
reducing the national mortality
rates. The Urology Place, led
by Dr. Kella, will be providing
free prostate-specific antigen
(PSA) blood testing for the
first 300 men. Testosterone
testing will also be available
for a minimal fee.
Artpace, located at 445 N.
Main Ave., has a new exhibit
that displays a complete puzzle
of artists who make Artpace into
an art space.
Ramin Samandari, who has
made a name for himself as an
artist since his arrival to San
Antonio in 1978, created a new
exhibit called “Faces of Artpace.”
It features 57 photographic
portraits, which represent the
S.A. arts community who are
currently or formerly have been
involved with Artpace.
“I tried to make it as endless
as possible. The artists don’t like
to be photographed or be the
center of attention because they
express themselves through their
creations,” explained Samandari.
“I had them close their eyes and
told them to feel their current
emotion. I moved around while
they closed their eyes so they
wouldn’t know where I was at.
Once they opened their eyes, the
camera took the picture.”

traits, medium portraits are
former exhibiting artists and the
smaller frames are former staff,
interns, contractors or artist collaborators. It was an interesting
exhibit to look at as people with
bigger roles were hanging on the
walls, and those with a smaller
role were less recognized – yet
you could not keep your eye off
of their emotion.
The window works exhibit
may be small, however, each
face is recognized for the work
they have put to make Artpace
an extraordinary art space many
could not miss. There is a story
all artists have and how they
genuinely feel when they step
outside of their work. You won’t
see an artist, but humans who
have a message to say based on
their expression.
The “Faces of Artpace” is a
touching exhibit many will not
only view, but also feel many
emotions with the help of artists
who prove that there is meaning
behind the works.

San Antonio celebrates
Make Music Day
La Villita and the Arneson
River Theatre will join in the
celebration of Make Music
Day, a global event taking place in over 700 cities
around the world.
Back-to-back performances
from numerous Texas bands
will take place on the Arneson River stage and street
performers will be scattered
through the La Villita Village,
with children’s activities, free
ukulele and harmonica classes
and food/drink vendors available for all in attendance.
This year, San Antonio
Make Music Day will take
place on Tuesday, June 21
from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. This
exciting event will give community members of all ages,
creeds and musical persuasions the chance to experience the joy of making music
together on the summer solstice – the longest day of the
year for free concerts.
Every band is unique and
multiple genres will be featured from country, rock,
classical to Tejano, Latin
and folk.
By establishing one specific
day each year, June 21, to
celebrate music, San Antonio
is empowering individuals to
seek out ways to celebrate
the wide diversity and rich
heritage of music in our community, together.
Make Music Day is a day
of music open to all in the
streets, businesses, parks
and wherever people feel like
playing or listening. La Villita
joins other events worldwide
as communities come together in celebration of music and
the countless benefits that
making music brings.
Make Music San Antonio
is expecting 2,000 – 3,000
people to be in attendance
throughout the day with over
70 local San Antonio and
Texas bands/musicians playing free, outdoor concerts.
Mayor Ivy Taylor has officially proclaimed Make Music
San Antonio to be a city sponsored and supported event,
in addition to a special guest
speaker appearance at the
festival from Councilman Roberto Trevino with District 1.

Cuba Libre?

Recently, I had the chance
to visit Cuba. For years, the
communist island has been
clouded in mystery and intrigue. There has always been
a certain allure to it which has
fascinated me. My mission
was to see, and experience,
what it was all about.
The surreal factor
Yes, it is everything you
have heard, seen and more.
The island is a virtual timecapsule. The cars, the buildings and overall mentality
– it is like going back in time
or traveling to an alternate
universe at first. Yet, after
meeting some of the locals
and sightseeing a little, that
feeling subsides fairly quickly.
What you find, is a place
with good things and bad
things, just like anywhere
else. It is a tropical place with
many gorgeous sights and
some which leave you heartbroken or in deep thought.
Hospitality and safety
I never once felt afraid or in
danger on the island. I found
Cubans to be very warm and
welcoming. The people we
met were truly friendly and
helpful. For the most part,
they would stay out of our
way. Even when we walked
through an unfamiliar neighborhood at night to get back
home, we never felt uneasy.
Communism roots
There is no denying, Cuba
is a communist country. From
the moment you step off of
the plane, you can sense it.
There is no shortage of prostate graffiti slogans lining the
streets on the way to Havana.
The reminder that this is a
communist country birthed
in the 1950s is everywhere.
While the older Cubans talk
about “The Revolution” with
a great sense of reverence,
much of the younger population seems to crave change.
One student we spoke to
said, “We want to be able to
travel outside of the island
freely. We want more opportunities. We don’t believe in
everything the older people
stand for.”

A photographer’s dream
Cuba is certainly one of
the most picturesque places
I have been to. The classiccolonial architectural style
combined with the vibrant
colors of Little Havana was a
stunning sight. Most tourists
had expensive cameras and
would stop every couple of
feet to take pictures.
Every corner, every alley
offered endless opportunity
to capture spectacular photographs. Of course, not
everything is beautiful. Truth
is, the island needs some
serious work and there is no
escaping the fact that rampant
poverty exists. Many of the
once-grand buildings are now
falling apart. For many locals,
the photographer’s dream is
actually a daily nightmare.
The Tourism debate
As I mentioned earlier,
travel to Cuba is easier than
it has been in decades. For
the record, “pure tourism”
trips are not allowed for
U.S. citizens. Yet, there are
12 categories sanctioned by
the State Department which
include people-to-people (humanitarian), religious and
educational reasons.
Most Americans can usually
fit into one of these. Some say
this will hurt Cuba and kill
the “nostalgia” factor. Yet, I
think it will only help. I mean,
we don’t say, “Tourists are
killing Cancun, Miami or Las
Vegas.” More people visiting
means more money and opportunity for the struggling
people of Cuba.
Best mojito in the world
I know what you all are
wondering…“But did you
have a Mojito?” Yes, of
course! Trust me; it’s the
best mojito anywhere. Period.
Final thoughts
Overall, I truly loved Cuba.
I enjoyed my time there and
was really glad I went. In
fact, I plan on going back
again next year and exploring
some more. This is definitely
a country that is evolving
very quickly. If you have ever
wanted to go, now is the time.

Black Sabbath to play final
U.S. show ever in San Antonio
The end is here. Nearly
five years to the day that
the legendary Black Sabbath
announced they would be
reforming, the band will play
their last show ever in the
United States on Nov. 12
at the AT&T Center in San
Antonio.
Tickets are on sale at Ticketmaster.com and ATTCenter.
com.
This just-announced performance is one of three headlining arena concerts the band
has added to the final North
American leg of their massive
2016 “The End World Tour.”
The new shows are Nov. 8 at
BOK Center in Tulsa, Nov. 10
at Toyota Center in Houston
and Nov. 12 at the AT&T
Center.
These dates and the previously announced headlining
slot at this year’s 20th anniversary celebration of Ozzfest
(Saturday, Sept. 24 at the
Ozzfest Meets Knotfest double-header music and lifestyle
weekend) come at the end of
the band’s North American
tour, which kicks off Aug. 17
at Nikon at Jones Beach Theater in Wantagh, N.Y.
The “greatest metal band
of all time”--Ozzy Osbourne
(vocals), Tony Iommi (guitar)
and Geezer Butler (bass) – are
currently on tour in Europe
for a mix of summer headlining and festival performances,
before returning to North
America in August. Immediately following the November
U.S. shows, Black Sabbath
will head to Mexico and then
South America where they will
wrap up their 2016 dates.
These new dates mark the
end of the epic journey that
Black Sabbath began nearly
five decades ago.
Here’s some critical feedback from 2016’s tour:
“From the pulverizing opening tritone of ‘Black Sabbath’…the show was more a
celebration of the pioneering
heavy-metal band’s legacy
than an epitaph…each of the
musicians was in stellar form

San Antonio hosts one of
the most exciting Fourth of
July celebrations.
The Official Fourth of July
Celebration has become a
tradition for many families
in San Antonio. The free
event includes games, a children’s parade, live music, a
Zumbathon and, of course,
a spectacular fireworks show
presented by H-E-B.
Benefiting the San Antonio
Parks Foundation, the festivities take place at Woodlawn
