Mission Appeal
As we celebrate the Ascension of the Lord this
weekend, we celebrate our Annual Mission Appeal here
at St. Francis of Assisi. How appropriate that we have
our Mission Appeal on this weekend when we are invited to continue the Mission of Jesus in our lives. The focal point of the Ascension is Jesus ascending to Heaven
and His words “I will be with you, even to the end of the
age.” (cf. Matthew 28:20) Hence, Jesus is with all of us,
especially with those who are most in need and we must
each do our part for those who are in need or are searching for Jesus. Often times we can ask ourselves, “What
can I do to bring Jesus to others?” I believe that the Mission Appeal is a response to that question!
Participating in the Mission Appeal allows us do
our part in taking Jesus to those who are in need and
are searching. Since the start of his papacy, Pope Francis has spoken time and time again of our need to serve
those who are most in need. “To be Christ,” Pope Francis says, “we must be willing to help those who are most
in need” and the Mission Appeal is our opportunity to do
so.
This year we welcome Sister Cindy Sullivan. Sister Cindy has been missioned in Quito, Ecuador for 40
years. Sr. Cindy, originally from Massena, New York,
started out as a Peace Corps volunteer in Ecuador in
1974 and then joined the community of Sisters of Charity of the Blessed Virgin Maria out of Dubuque, Iowa. Sister is the director of the Working Boys Center, a
Family of Families in Quito. The mission in Quito is
unique in its work with the entire family of working children. The mission founder, Fr. John Halligan, SJ, was
awarded the Opus Prize in 2010 as the first place prize
mission work of “unsung heroes” from around the
world. Sister will share with us about the unique work
in Quito.
On behalf of those we will help, I thank you in
advance for your generosity and support of the Mission!

We are very blessed to have deacons at our parish. They are ordained clergy, married or single, who help priests in a variety of
duties. They are educated extensively during a four or five year
program that includes philosophy, theology, Holy Scripture, homiletics (the art of preaching), sacramental studies, Church studies,
counseling, and pastoral care. They also engage in a year of postordination formation.
Deacons were once common in the early Church, but declined
around the fifth century. From then until the Second Vatican
Council the only deacons were seminarians as a step toward
priestly ordination. In 1967 Pope Paul VI restored the diaconate,
calling it “permanent” in contrast to those continuing their formation for priesthood who were considered “transitional” deacons.

The ministry of the diaconate is one of service in three areas: the
Word, the Liturgy, and Charity.
In the Ministry of the Word, the deacon proclaims the Gospel, and
teaches through his homilies. The Ministry of the Liturgy includes
being an ordinary minister of Holy Communion and the Chalice.
The Ministry of Charity involves services to the poor and marginalized and helping parishioners become more involved in their
ministries. Deacons can perform marriages (unless vows are exchanged during a Mass), baptisms and funeral rites (unless it is a
funeral Mass.) They cannot hear confession, give absolution,
anoint the sick, or celebrate Mass.

A deacon’s wife is considered a partner in her husband’s ministry,
and undertakes the same education and training her as her husband. If his wife dies, the deacon cannot remarry.
So let us pray for the welfare of our deacons, their wives and families, and be grateful for their dedication of service to God and our
parish.

THÁNG 5: TÔI DÂNG HOA LÊN MẸ - ĐGM Bùi Tuần
7. Cảm tạ của tôi đi đôi với sám hối. Tôi sám h i, vì nh ng thi‫ ﱞ‬u sót li l‫ ک‬m trong vi‫‫‬c đón nh‫ی‬n ‫ ء‬n đ c tin, trong s b i
(Long X uyên—ĐGM Bùi Tuần)
Llamado Misionero
semana, celebramos nuestro Llamado Misionero Anual

Marriage: Unique for a Reason ofrece

Randee [email protected] .
