Annual Report - AIA Colorado
2012 Annual Report
YEAR IN REVIEW
www.aiacolorado.org
Welcome
Dear AIA Colorado Members:
We are pleased to enclose the 2012 annual report. We provide this report electronically to save on resources and to support
AIA’s sustainability initiatives.
Major accomplishments in 2012 include:
•
•
•
Procuring new office space for AIA Colorado. After years of planning and preparation, we moved our office to its current
location in February 2012. This new space is now utilized, on average, for 15-20 committee meetings and events per week.
This space was successfully completed on a tight budget ($57/ft. construction) thanks to donations of more than $310,000.
A donor wall recognizing our many contributors is prominently featured in the office lobby.
Planning for the 2013 AIA National Convention, which will be held in Denver June 20-22. More than 120 volunteers have
been meeting for 18 months in preparation for this exciting event. We hope you take the time to join us. For more information
and to register, please visit www.aia.org/convention.
Working on the sunset review of the architects’ licensing law, which is currently being considered this legislative session
(Senate Bill 13-161). We are looking forward to the prospect of having a new licensing law in place by the end of this legislative
session. Our legislative subcommittee reviews hundreds of bills each year and communicates issues of importance to you
on an ongoing basis. We are the only group lobbying on behalf of architects.
Our board has continued to focus our efforts on four key areas outlined in our strategic plan: Advocacy & Influence, Education
& Resources, Professional & Community Awareness, and Membership. We will revisit the strategic plan in 2013 with a goal of
adopting a new plan in 2014.
As always, we encourage our members to contact us with any questions or if we can be of service to you.
We look forward to working with and serving the AIA Colorado community throughout 2013.
Sincerely,
Ernest Joyner, AIA
AIA Colorado 2012 President
Sonia Riggs, Hon. AIA, CAE

Legislative Summary
The AIA Colorado Government Affairs Committee’s legislative subcommittee reviewed 361 House and 184 Senate bills in 2012,
and opposed one bill. A detailed legislative summary was distributed to the membership at the conclusion of the legislative session.
In the summer of 2012, it came to the attention of AIA Colorado’s and its local chapters’ leadership that some building departments
were not accepting landscape plans submitted by architects and quoting state statute as to their reasoning. AIA Colorado worked
to clarify the exemption in the Landscape Architects’ Licensing Law and presented our case at the licensing board meeting in
October. Subsequently, a rule change was implemented in early 2013. AIA Colorado supported the proposed changes and felt that
the state licensing board made positive steps to clarify that architects, professional engineers and professional land surveyors may
prepare, sign and seal landscape architectural construction documents as part of their projects, when the professionals possess the
qualifications to do so, and the individual is practicing their profession according to its respective definition.
A subgroup of the Government Affairs Committee spent a great deal of time focusing on the 2013 Sunset Review for Licensure
of Architects, Professional Engineers and Professional Land Surveyors. AIA Colorado prepared an informational report and
submitted it to the policy analyst for the Department of Regulatory Agencies (DORA) that was assigned to reviewing our law. AIA
Colorado plans to actively lobby on behalf of architects in the 2013 legislative session.

Media Coverage Summary
In 2012, AIA Colorado and the four local chapters were covered 78 times by local media. Coverage ranged from blogs and
websites (Westword and DenverArts.org) to newspapers (The Denver Post, Colorado Real Estate Journal, Denver Business
Journal, The Colorado Springs Gazette, Northern Colorado Business Report, The Daily Journal, The Summit Daily News,
Colorado Springs Business Journal, and The Pueblo Chieftan, among others) and magazines (ENR Mountain States and Luxe
Interiors + Design, as well as others).
Additionally, the AIA Colorado tenant finish project team, including Studio B Architects and Hutton Architecture Studio, A Member
of Cuningham Group Architecture, was honored with a 2012 Colorado, Wyoming and Plains States Best Projects Award by ENR
Mountain States.

Membership
In 2012, AIA Colorado’s membership of licensed architects, design professionals, architecture students and professional affiliates
continued to hold steady despite a difficult economy. Servicing the membership continues to be AIA Colorado’s highest priority.
The board of directors discussed how we can continue to maintain and even increase our services to the membership, while
remaining financially sound. We remain committed to that practice today.
Several individual members of AIA Colorado were honored during the year for their excellence and dedication to the organization
and the profession.

Organizational Structure
The AIA state component and local chapters in Colorado operate under a unique structure, similar to only a few other states in
the United States. Colorado has, in fact, been discussed as a model for other AIA chapters. In 1997, a restructuring agreement
between AIA Colorado and the four local chapters was created. Prior to that time, only AIA Colorado and AIA Denver were
staffed. This agreement stipulated that the state component (AIA Colorado) collects all membership dues (eliminating local
chapter dues). In exchange, AIA Colorado provides:
•
•
•
A $10,000 annual grant to each local chapter.
Allocation of 50 percent of the total corporate sponsorship revenue collected, which is then divided among the local chapters
based on membership size.
Support from AIA Colorado for operational expenses, including staff and office support services.
The president of each local chapter sits on the state board as a voting director. The state component and local chapters do
not compete for programs or sponsors. The state component handles all state legislation and government affairs issues. Local
chapters may weigh in on state matters through the AIA Colorado Government Affairs Committee and the AIA Colorado board of
directors. Local chapters handle all local issues. The AIA Colorado board may weigh in on local issues through the local chapter
boards.
This program has worked successfully for more than 15 years. As a result, the state component and local chapters work together
in a unique and symbiotic way. Chapters continually share ideas with one another and are able to pool resources to create more
significant programs and outreach.

OFFICE MOVE
After three years of planning, AIA Colorado moved its office in February 2012. This move was made for several reasons —namely
a substantial hike in existing lease rate and the need for additional space. After a lengthy process of searching for a new space,
AIA Colorado was able to find a home that met much of the criteria needed: easy access from the university and downtown,
better parking, more space and central location. Using the guidelines set forth by QBS Colorado, Aspen-based firm Studio B
Architects and Denver-based Hutton Architecture Studio (A Member of Cuningham Group Architecture, Inc.) were selected as
the architectural team in charge of the design and build out. AIA Colorado received more than $310,000 in in-kind and monetary
donations including participation from all four of our local chapters. The many contributions helped to keep the construction costs
down to approximately $57 per square foot. This new location will be AIA Colorado’s home until at least 2021.
EMERGING PROFESSIONALS
AIA Colorado continues to support emerging professionals through awards programs (Young Architects Awards Gala), ARE
study groups and materials, scholarships, portfolio reviews and special events geared toward this demographic. The Emerging
Professionals Coalition – comprised of the Associate Director, Associate Director-elect, Associates Committee of AIA Denver
(ACAD) chair, Young Architects Forum (YAF) chair, IDP State Coordinator, AIAS Presidents and an Emerging Professionals
Blog representative – held its first “mock interview” event, which was well received. We continue our close relationship with The
American Institute of Architecture Students (AIAS) as well.
PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
The Professional Development Series was rolled out in 2012. In a similar vein to AIA Denver’s AIA+2030 program, the series is
a three-hour session every month for 10 months that focuses on a different subject related to professional development. Based
on feedback from this inaugural year, we will be continuing the series in 2013 but adding small tweaks to make it even more
relevant to attendees.
PUBLIC OUTREACH
From May through October, Denver International Airport hosted an exhibition of AIA Colorado members’ sustainable design work.
This exhibition took place in the Ansbacher Hall (the walkway between the main terminal and Concourse A). According to DIA,
the airport receives more than one million visitors each week.
NATIONAL CONVENTION
Ten committees and numerous subcommittees continued to meet and intensified their planning efforts in 2012 in preparation
for the 2013 AIA National Convention being held in Denver June 20-22. Several hundred volunteers will be needed during the
convention in 2013. For more information,visit buildingleadersdenver.com.

BLUE SPRUCE HABITAT FOR HUMANITY PROJECT
After a successful design competition sponsored by the Housing Committee, COTE, and
CAD-1, Inc., in 2011, the duplex project broke ground on April 27, 2012. Construction
is well under way on the Alan Ford Architects design, with completion scheduled in
time to be featured as AIA Colorado’s “Legacy Project” during the 2013 AIA National
Convention. Fundraising efforts are ongoing in hopes that the financial commitment
made by the AIA Denver board of directors can be 100% achieved.
I-70 HIGHWAY REALIGNMENT PROJECT
The board of directors supported the activities of the Urban Design Committee (UDC)
in its attempt to build support for an AIA-sponsored Regional/Urban Design Assistance
Team (R/UDAT) from affected local neighborhood businesses and groups, the City
and County of Denver, and CDOT. While the R/UDAT’s future remains in question, the
UDC has expanded its involvement to work with all stakeholders and the Urban Land
Institute (ULI) to collectively explore multiple urban planning and design concept for the
re-alignment.
Stephen Cole, Assoc. AIA; Lura Blumenfeld; and
Amanda Fitzjarrald, Assoc. AIA, mingled at the
chapter’s annual awards gala.
CIVIC OUTREACH
The board has reached out to and met with several leaders at the City and County of
Denver including:
• Mr. Kelly Leid, Director, Development Services
• Mr. Rocky Piro, Manager, Community Planning and Development
• Additionally, our newly appointed Public Director is Todd Wenskoski of the city’s
Community Planning and Development department.
PUBLIC AWARENESS
The Public Affairs Committee was hard at work making great strides in advancing the
work of AIA Denver members to the general public. They have created:
• The “Every Building has an Architect” postcard*, which is mailed to authors of
construction and/or real estate articles appearing in local publications who do not
mention the architect(s), reminding them that architects should be recognized and
acknowledged in future articles.
• “This Project Designed by a Member of AIA Denver” banners* are now available
to be placed at highly visible construction sites in the metro area, reminding
community members that AIA architects are responsible for public architecture.
• “Third Thursday – Open Studio!” events provide opportunities for architectural
firms to open their offices to the general public for tours and presentations of work.
AIA Denver members and the homeowner of the
Blue Spruce Habitat for Humanity design-build
home at the project’s groundbreaking.
*It should be noted that all the artwork/graphics and purchase of these pieces were
driven and executed by the committee.

AIA Colorado South Accomplishments
COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT
The chapter participated in several community outreach efforts, including:
• The Deerfield Hills Revitalization Project, a rebuild of a low- to moderate-income
neighborhood in the City of Colorado Springs. The “rebuild” included 12 homes
receiving general repairs, accessibility and energy-efficiency improvements,
landscaping, exterior painting, fence replacement and safety additions. A second
phase will involve community-wide meetings that will set up a “master plan” of
sorts for the community.
• Better Block Pikes Peak, a volunteer project to transform a section of Pikes Peak
Avenue in downtown Colorado Springs, taking it from a “good block” to a “great block.”
DISASTER ASSISTANCE
AIA Colorado South was actively engaged in the Waldo Canyon Fire rebuilding effort by
reviewing and offering advice on the proposed changes to the fire code to include changes for
ignition resistant construction (approved by city council on December 11, 2012). The chapter
remains a resource for the local fire department as they establish the design manual that will
accompany the new code changes. AIA Colorado South also partnered on two community
sessions with the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs for the rebuilding of Mt. Shadows.

JOHN JAMES WALLACE RETROSPECTIVE
The chapter supported and sponsored a John James Wallace Retrospective at the
Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center (FAC) over the summer. (Wallace, a local architect
who passed away in 2011, was a strong influence on the region’s built environment.)
Round table discussions were offered at FAC as a part of day-long activities prior to the
annual awards gala. The chapter plans to continue cultivating their partnership with the
Fine Arts Center to feature architecture-related content.
URBAN DESIGN
Our Urban Design Committee continued work to evolve the 2011 Sustainable Design
Assessment Team (SDAT) project that was sponsored by AIA Colorado South and AIA
National. Colorado Springs and the Urban Land Institute (ULI) participated in a weeklong process similar to the SDAT focused on downtown. This initiative, partially city
sponsored, is based on ULI recommendations in conjunction with the SDAT.
ARCHITECTS AS CIVIC LEADERS
AIA Colorado South was invited to present at the 2013 AIA National Convention in
Denver. The session, titled “Expanding the Architects Influence as Civic Leader – Best
Practices,” will discuss the changing role of the architect within the larger context of
urban issues using Colorado Springs as a case study. The program is based on the
2011 SDAT hosted by AIA Colorado South. SDAT leader Lee Quill, FAIA, of Washington
D.C.-based Cunningham | Quill Architects and a representative from the mayor’s office
in Colorado Springs, along with two AIA Colorado South members, will be presenting.

AIA Colorado West Accomplishments
PUBLIC OUTREACH
Modeled after AIA Denver’s program, AIA Colorado West worked to create a banner
program for construction sites that indicate projects designed by AIA members. This
was a large planning effort because of the extreme and varied signage restrictions in
the mountain towns.
COMMUNITY OUTREACH
AIA Colorado West participated with AIA Colorado in presenting a stained glass window to
the Barney Ford House Museum in Breckenridge. Representative Millie Hamner was there
to formally present the piece to the museum and publicly recognized AIA for its efforts.
PROFESSIONAL RECOGNITION
AIA Colorado West enjoyed a very successful awards gala at the Viceroy Hotel in
Snowmass. There were approx. 80 people in attendance, a record high for the event.
The chapter received the highest number of submissions to date at 42 and presented
seven well-deserved awards. Additionally, the President’s Award was given to Chris
Green, FAIA, for his great efforts with the International Green Construction Code (IgCC)
and community involvement as chair of the Avon Planning and Zoning Commission.
Jamie Brewster McLeod, AIA, also received a President’s Award for her efforts as an
organizer of many events in the Roaring Fork Valley and service in two public roles with
the Town of Aspen.
EMERGING PROFESSIONALS
AIA Colorado West began working to create an ARE review webinar series for associate
members. There was great discussion and initiative set forward by Associate Director
Amy Birdsall, Assoc. AIA, to promote ARE webinars in the chapter for 2013 and beyond.

LEADERSHIP TRAINING
AIA Colorado West was awarded the AIA Center for Civic Leadership Grant. Seed
money provided by this grant will help the membership become aware of and participate
in community leadership programs. This meets AIA public policy of architects using
their knowledge, skills and expertise to engage in civic life. The board will be seeking
members to take advantage of this opportunity in 2013 and to cultivate new chapter
leadership.
