If you have a registered parishioner to add to our
prayer list, please contact the executive assistant in the
parish office. Please let us know when it is time to
remove a name from the list. Please inscribe the
names of non-parishioners (e.g. family members,
friends, neighbors, co-workers) in the prayer intention
book found in the church vestibule. Please inscribe
their name only once as their needs will be
remembered at Masses throughout the year.
If you are hospitalized or homebound and would like
to receive Communion, please call Pat & Gary Boylan
at 941-204-7837.
You may also contact someone from the Eucharistic
Apostles of Divine Mercy who will pray the Chaplet of
Divine Mercy or other prayers with you. Please call
Lillian Pente at 843-705-7170.
In his 2011 commencement address to Northwestern
University, comedian and talk-show host Stephen
Colbert recalled what he learned from his experience as
a member of an improvisation group. “One of the things
I was taught early on,” he said, “is that you are not the
most important person in the scene.” The best
improvisation comes from a team that listens and
responds to each other to “serve a common idea.”
When someone demands attention or tries to force a
skit in a certain direction, the comedy falls apart. I never
forgot his advice. It is appropriate in families, in
workplaces, and among friends. And I confess I have
had to apply it to myself on more than a few occasions.
Jesus’ parable is
a caution against
presuming that we
know best or that
we—our goals and
talents— are most
important. He is not
advocating false modesty or a refusal to use the gifts
God gives us. Rather, Jesus asks that we start from a
place of humility and service. He wants us to allow
others to say what they need and how we can help
before we presume to know the solution or how the
situation should unfold. The figurative head of the table
belongs to Christ first and foremost, and it is up to us to
obediently go where he tells us. He will give us our
place. It is worthy to note that at the table of the Lord,
every place has the same significance and everyone is
a welcome guest. The only important one is Christ
himself. After that, we are all equals, regardless of who
we think we are.

Jubilee Year of Mercy
“Alms atone for sins” (Sirach 2:29). Alms are mercy translated into hands-on compassion. Jesus confirms
Sirach’s wisdom, “Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy” (Matthew 5:7). “Conduct your affairs
with humility” (Sirach 3:17). Humility: we’re all alike and special, for we’re children of God. Jesus confirms that
wisdom, too: “Do not recline at table in the place of honor. Take the lowest place” (Luke 14:8, 10). In fact, “When
you hold a lunch or a dinner, do not invite friends, relatives, wealthy neighbors. Invite the poor, crippled, lame,
blind,” physically or figuratively, society’s most vulnerable and marginalized, “who cannot repay you” (see 14:12–
14). Jesus seems to be telling us to prepare for eternity with God’s chosen by becoming their friend here and
now. Mercy is measured not by our delight in welcoming those we like most or who can repay us best, but by
sincerely embracing those we like least, who cannot repay us at all. Utter humility inspires pure mercy; pure
mercy leads to eternal joy.

reconoce.

“PREP”
Parish Religious
Education Program
We are gearing up to begin another
great year of FAITH FORMATION! WW just need to
put the finishing touches on our classes lists.
The Holy Spirit is sometimes the most neglected person
of the Blessed Trinity. We think of symbols like light,
cloud, water, fire, and a dove, but we have trouble
thinking of the Spirit in a personal way.
In this session, we take a look at how the Holy Spirit
appears in the Bible, in novenas and chaplets, in the
charismatic renewal, in an encyclical by St. John Paul II,
and in the works of selected theologians.
As we do so, we hope that the real Holy Spirit, the source
of so many gifts and fruits, will come across to us as a
familiar friend.
Our 2016-2017 PREP year will begin on Tuesday,
September 6 for our Sunday classes and
Wednesday, September 7 for our Wednesday
classes.
Our first class will begin in the church at the following
times:
Tuesday, September 6, 2016 -for our Sunday
classes will begin at 5:00 pm for both Parent
and child/children.
Wednesday, September 7, 2016 - sessions will
begin at your regularly scheduled time (5:00
or 6:30 pm) for both Parent and child/
children.

8th grade (Confirmation 2) year.

After a short summer break (or long depending on who you're asking - students or parents!), students are back at
SGGCS eager to learn and celebrate the 10th anniversary year of the school. The first week was filled with bright
smiles for old friends and brighter smiles welcoming new ones. By the end of the week, students and teachers
had settled into their classes and the 2016-2017 academic year was underway.

What does your relationship with Christ look like?
Do you see Jesus as simply a great teacher?
A prophet?
A man of great wisdom?
Or do you see him as more?
Jesus calls us to be more than simply believers—
he calls us to be his disciples and his friends.
Do you consider yourself a disciple and friend of Christ? The Gospel of John shows us
that God became like us; he became a man so that we could become like him and grow closer to him.
Follow Me: Meeting Jesus in the Gospel of John is your guide to a personal encounter with Christ.
If you want to know what it means to really follow Christ, and if you would like to have a deeper relationship with
him, then we invite you to join us for Follow Me, beginning on September 7, 2016. You will not only benefit
personally from being part of this study; you will also help us to grow in fellowship as a parish as we grow closer to
Christ together.
Follow Me invites you to experience the joy of a renewed friendship with Christ. You will learn what it takes to
follow him. You will experience the joy of divine friendship, and you will see how God— and only God—can satisfy
the deepest desires of your heart.
Participants of Follow Me will receive this workbook and will meet every week to view an engaging video
presentation followed by a time of lively group discussion and fellowship. The eight 30-minute videos, presented
by Dr. Edward Sri, will guide you through the Gospel of John. Dr. Sri will explain how Christ’s encounters with his
disciples, the Samaritan woman, the man born blind, and others, are examples of how he lovingly and persistently
calls each of us to a more intimate and life-changing relationship with him.
We will begin Follow Me on Wednesday, September 7th with two session, our morning sessions will be at 9:30 to
11:30 AM and the evening Session from 7:00 to 9:00 pm. The Study will be held at St. Andrew Hall located on
Pinckney Colony Road. To obtain a registration form visit our website, Literature rack in the back of the church. Or
at our Parish Office. For more information please contact Gundy Dahm at 843-379-6767.

COMMUNITY CHRISTMAS DAY
DINNER ORGANIZERS NEEDED
Volunteers are urgently needed to replace the three
organizers of the non-profit Christmas Dinner that has
taken place in our community for 13 years. Turkey
dinners prepared by 400 volunteers are served from
11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. We have traditionally served
between 800 to 900 diners.
Unfortunately, this dinner must be cancelled if
new organizers do not volunteer soon.
Lois and Wally Willig and Barb O'Connor will
assist the new coordinators throughout 2016. The
dinner will be held at the First Presbyterian Church on
December 25.
Donations received at the dinner help Meals on
Wheels and Second Helpings.
For further information, please call
Lois Willig 843-304-1086 or 843-705-5725 or
email [email protected]
St. Gregory the Great
Adoration Society
Our Perpetual Adoration Chapel
gives us an opportunity to spend an
hour of prayer and give thanks for the
many blessings we have received.
This hour in peace and meditation
with the Blessed Sacrament can also
be an opportunity to pray for our
friends and family who are sick or just need our prayers.
Christ instituted this Holy Sacrament of the Eucharist in
order to remain with mankind until the end of time (Jn.
14:18).
Our wish is to have someone present for each of the
24 hours throughout the day in silent contemplation and
reflection. We can use more adorers for this ministry.
Please be generous with your time and sign up for one
hour of adoration.
If you have any questions or feel you can sign up for
just one hour per week please call
Darlene Polk 724-787-1555
or send an email to [email protected].
