"No one who sets a hand to the plow and looks to what was left behind
is fit for the kingdom of God." What have we left behind? What have we
traded in to become faithful followers of Christ?
The answer is different for all of us. Some of us can tell the tale of a dramatic conversion story, leaving behind a life of blatantly selfish indulgence or obviously sinful behavior in order to embrace the call of Jesus.
Others of us have been Christians since the day of our baptism as infants and have always walked
the path of belief, but perhaps
can trace certain moments
when we embraced a deeper
commitment and resolved to
abandon particular behaviors,
relationships, or worldly priorities that were in conflict with
our faith. Whatever the case,
Jesus instructs us today not to
look to "what was left behind." Instead, we are called to keep our focus
on what lies ahead, namely, life in Christ and the ultimate hope of union
with him in heaven.
Keeping this focus can be quite a challenge. So often, it's tempting to
think that the grass is greener somewhere else. As Christians, we can fall
into the trap of imagining that it might feel better to be ... something
else. Perhaps, seeing others around us whose lives are not shaped by
their faith, we might think they have it easier than we do. Or perhaps
we get lost in reminiscence about the way things were in the good old
days, and thus get distracted from the mission that stands in front of us
today. But thoughts like these are not fit for our new life as disciples of
Christ. As St. Paul says in today's epistle, "For freedom Christ set us free."
May we embrace the gift of this true freedom and follow Christ without
looking back.

Worship
Celebrating St. Stephen’s at Summerfest Public Witness for Christ Bernie Leach
Since 1856 the Church of St. Stephen has been a sign of God’s presence
in the middle of the city of Anoka. For more than 150 years, as the number of people who belong to the church has grown, they continue to
stand as signs of the work that a strong community of faith is doing to
help bring about God’s Kingdom here on this earth.
That is why it is important to celebrate the parish, on the occasion of
its largest festival, Summerfest. St. Stephen was chosen by the twelve
apostles to serve tables, look after the distribution of alms and assist
in the ministry of preaching. Stephen became the first Christian martyr.
He was a Jewish man who converted to Christ and testified eloquently
before the Sanhedrin in defense of “the righteous one”, Jesus. Like its patron saint, this faith community, even when celebrating together in fun,
stands as a public witness for Christ in this time and place.
Parish Worship Commission Completes Another
Successful Year
The Worship Commission, an important group of parishioners that evaluates and reflects on the worship of the parish and then makes recommendations to the pastor, completed another successful year this June.
Members include: Rick Rajtar (Chair), Randy Kadrie (Recorder), Brent LaGree, Robin Taaffe, Bev Dehn, Cindy Duerr, Robert Nichols, Mike Nolan
and Gregory Bortnem. Special thanks to outgoing member Mike Witt!
The commission has studied the hospitality and welcome at the parish
and provided valuable input. Other recent topics have included evaluation of the Church Environment and Mass times for the size of our assemblies. Thanks to these commission members for providing quality
leadership in the area of Worship at St. Stephen’s. Meetings begin again
in September.

Pastoral Care
You shall love your neighbor as yourself (Gal 5:14).
Sr. Mary Anne Schaenzer
There are many ways to love one’s self and one’s neighbor.
Under the umbrella of Pastoral Care at St. Stephen’s we can consider
the following:
Some ways are more verbal and would include visiting one-on-one.
Some ways require willingness to provide some leadership as in leading
a prayer service at an independent or assisted living facility.
Others involve working with a team but do not involve getting up and
speaking, such as being on a funeral luncheon team or helping at the
Family Table Meal. (A family with children can help with this once a
month or every two or three months. This would also be a great way for
young people to give/get some service hours.)
Other outreach programs that include helping with the serving of food
are: Feed My Starving Children, Loaves and Fishes, Sharing and Caring Hands, Meals on Wheels.
Some people knit or crochet prayer shawls to comfort other.
If you would like to talk about any of these possibilities or others, please
contact Sister Mary Anne at the parish office (763-712-7441).
Live by the Spirit (Gal 5:16).
You Can Help WHO Feed Starving Children
Join the WHO (We Help Others) group the first Wednesday of the
month as we spend the morning packing food to help prevent children from starving throughout the world. Meet us July 6 at 9:15 a.m.
at Feed My Starving Children, 401 93rd Avenue NW in Coon Rapids.
Thanks to all who have responded in the past. We make a commitment
for a certain number and it is very important that we fulfill our obligation. If you are able to help, please contact Gayl at 763-422-0024.
Thank you for considering this worthwhile cause. Hope to see you there!

“For you were called to freedom, brothers and sisters. But do not use this
freedom as an opportunity for the flesh; rather serve one another through
love.” GALATIANS 5:13
Monday, June 27
We like to celebrate the fact that
we are free to “live
the good life.” But
Jesus calls us to a
different kind of
freedom. St. Paul
reminds us that Jesus sets us free so
that we can serve
one another, share our gifts and promote God’s work here on earth to glorify His name and not honor ourselves.

Aluminum Can
Recycling Benefits
Our Parish
If you have aluminum cans to recycle, please drop them off at the
recycling trailer located in the
west parking lot of the Anoka
KC Hall at 2421 Fourth Avenue.
That is only a few blocks down
the road - you could swing by on
your way home from church. The
extra effort is appreciated as the
recycling proceeds benefit our
parish charity needs. Thank you
to the Anoka Knights of Columbus Council 2018, especially Al
Kempf, for coordinating this ongoing project. And, thank you to
all of you for donating your cans!

(Gal 5:14).

¡Llamando a Todos Los Músicos y Cantantes!
No importa
gloria a Dios. Para más información, llama a Suzanne a 763-712-7464. Te
necesitamos. Ven, y júntate con nosotros.

“Porque, hermanos y hermanas,
habéis sido llamados a la libertad.
Sólo que no toméis de esa libertad
como pretexto para la carne; antes,
al contrario, servíos por amor los
unos a los otros” Galateos 5:13
Queremos celebrar el hecho de
que somos libres para “vivir una
buena vida”.
honrarnos a nosotros mismos.
