Teacher, you are very passionate!
¡Profesora, ud. es muy apasionada!
That was what a student blurted sometime ago. I got speechless
when I heard it, but when I was at a second to retort that, he
came with “it shows that you enjoy teaching, you do it with such
an unbridled zest.” It’s true that the first link we do with the
word passion is sex, but from that moment, I understood that my
“passionate” attitude towards my students brought “learning in a
relaxing and entertaining environment.”
Eso fue lo que un alumno me dijo hace un tiempo. Quedé sin habla
cuando lo escuché y cuando estaba a un segundo de responderle,
continuó con “se nota que ud. disfruta enseñando, lo hace con
mucho entusiasmo”. Es cierto que la primera relación que hacemos
con la palabra “pasión” es sexo, pero desde ese momento entendí
que mi actitud “apasionada” hacia mis alumnos lograba en ellos un
aprendizaje en un ambiente relajado y entretenido”.
Passion makes us possible to overcome hurdles. Each time we need
to express our ideas, opinions and feelings, we tend to stop and
think about them over, if it is in another language, the task is much
harder. As a “passionate” teacher I learned that I have transferred
the energy of my “passion” to my students creating a moment of
sincerity, authenticity, intensity and depth. Passion is the energy I
put when I do what I really love above all.
La pasión nos permite salvar obstáculos. Cada vez que necesitamos
expresar nuestras ideas, opiniones y sentimientos, tendemos a
detenernos y pensar un poco más lo que vamos a decir, si es en otro
idioma, la tarea es aún más difícil. Como profesora “apasionada”
aprendí a transferir la energía de mi “pasión” hacia mis alumnos
creando momentos de sinceridad, autenticidad, intensidad y
profundidad. La pasión es la energía que pongo cuando hago lo que
realmente amo hacer.
Jonathan Kozol, an educator, writer, and activist, says in his book
“Letters to a Young Teacher” that new teachers are frequently
advised to start out tough and stick to the prescribed curriculum.
This, in his belief, is the worst possible advice. Establishing
a chemistry of trust between the student and the teacher is a
great deal more important than to charge into the contents of
books. “Entrap them first in fascination. Entrap them in a sense of
merriment and hopeful expectations”, he suggests.
My own “passion” makes me do unthinkable things though, like
the time I taught the general manager of a very renowned Chilean
company. I really needed a board for writing, but in his office, that
was the neatest, cleanest and the most elegant I had ever seen,
there were none. My student, who actually spoke English very well,
didn’t even have a piece of paper for taking notes. I looked around,
jumped towards the Venetian blind, pulled it up and started to write
on the window glass. My student got astonished but while I was
jotting down the best explanatory chart, he pressed his intercom
and said: “Cristina, please bring me a notepad.”
It’s true, passion outlines our life, energizes the flames of our
inspiration and makes our heart and mind be open to the changing
world. It is food for the soul, a glow that light up our ideas and
tasks, passion is our legacy and it is within us.
Passion and humour have been the right ingredients for my everyday
work.
Jonathan Kozol, educador, escritor y activista, en su libro “Cartas a
una profesora joven”, dice que generalmente a los profesores se nos
aconseja apegarnos estrictamente a nuestra labor curricular. Esto,
según él, es el peor consejo. Establecer una química de confianza
entre el alumno y el maestro es mucho más importante que llenarlos
con contenidos de libros. Él sugiere, “Atraparlos con fascinación.
Engancharlos con diversión y esperanza”.
Mi propia pasión me ha hecho hacer cosas impensables, como esa
vez en que estaba enseñando al gerente general de una reconocida
empresa chilena. Yo realmente necesitaba tener una pizarra
donde escribir, pero en su oficina, que era la más ordenada, limpia
y elegante que yo había visto en mi vida, no había ninguna. Mi
alumno, que hablaba inglés bastante bien, ni siquiera tenía un papel
donde tomar notas. Miré a mi alrededor, salté hacia la persiana,
la subí y empecé a escribir en el vidrio de la ventana. Mi alumno
quedó atónito, pero mientras hacía mi tabla de explicación, él
presionó el citófono y dijo: “Cristina, me trae una libreta de apuntes,
por favor”.
Es verdad, la pasión traza nuestras vidas, energiza las llamas
de nuestra inspiración y hace que nuestras mentes y corazones
se abran al mundo que cambia. Es alimento para el alma, un
resplandor que enciende nuestras ideas y tareas, la pasión es
nuestro legado y está dentro de nosotros.
La pasión y el humor han sido los ingredientes exactos para mi
trabajo diario.

El adiós de RBD
All good things must come to an end, and so with Mexico’s
most popular six who will hang up their uniform and
present their music at a spectacular farewell concert at
the Movistar Arena on December 14, at 6:00 p.m. Alfonso,
Maite, Christian, Dulce, Christopher and Anahí will stop in
Chile as part of their “Farewell Tour” to perform, for the
very last time, those hits that saw them rise to the top.

Better late than never. At long last, thousands of fans will
finally be able to enjoy the queen of pop’s countless hits.
Her “Sticky and Sweet Tour” will hit Estadio Nacional,
the venue chosen to host Madonna’s first visit to Chile,
next December 11. Tickets prices for this monumental
event range from $23,000 to $205,000 and are available
through Ticketmaster.

An artistic love story
The Palacio La Moneda Cultural Center hosts “Shared
Lives,” an exhibition on Mexican artists Frida Kahlo and
Diego Rivera, that will run from November 22 to February
29, 2009. Sponsored by Banco Santander, the show will be
held to commemorate 100 years of the birth of Kahlo and
mark the 50th anniversary of Rivera’s death by showcasing
over 100 works of art while celebrating the enduring
cultural legacy of this Latin American couple.

Una artística historia de amor
"Vidas compartidas" es el nombre de la exposición que se
tomará el Centro Cultural Palacio La Moneda, entre los días
22 de noviembre del 2008 hasta el 29 de febrero del 2009.
Los autores, nada menos que Frida Kalho y Diego Rivera,
ambos artistas mexicanos. La iniciativa, que cuenta con el
auspicio del Banco Santander, exhibe el legado cultural de
la pareja de latinoamericanos, en el marco de las actividades de conmemoración del centenario de natalicio de la
Kalho y los 50 años del fallecimiento de Rivera, exponiendo
más de cien trabajos que ilustraron su arte.

I think, therefore I am, is not their style. Going against what they’re
supposed to be, rejecting strict rationale or in-depth analysis, they
enjoy bottomless pits, lack of evidence, that sweet uncertainty that
comes with following your heart and jumping without a parachute.
El pienso luego existo no es parte de su estilo. A contracorriente de
lo que debiera ser, rechazando los racionalismos severos o análisis
exhaustivos de variables, disfrutan de los abismos, de las faltas de
pruebas, de la sabrosa incertidumbre de hacerle caso al corazón y,
aun sin paracaídas, de lanzarse al vacío.
Acting with passion is crazy. Yes, you
heard it. Scientific studies have proved
that passion is a state of semi-insanity
similar to being in love. What this
means is that science has shown that
people who fall madly in love enter into
a mentally disturbed state that many
times distorts any notion of reality,
making them capable of performing
incredible feats, astounding actions
or making practically heroic decisions
that they would never make if not for
this unbalance.
Actuar con pasión, cosa de locos. Sí, tal
cual. Estudios científicos han demostrado que la pasión es un estado de semilocura similar al del enamoramiento.
Es decir, la ciencia ha constatado que
aquellos que se enamoran locamente
caen en un estado de trastorno psíquico
que muchas veces trastoca la noción
de realidad, haciéndolos capaces de
realizar hazañas, acciones asombrosas
o tomar decisiones casi heroicas que,
si no fuera por ese trastoque, jamás
tomarían.
Unlike falling in love, where the object
of affection is always the person you
love, when it comes to passion, the
object could be a project, a job, a trip,
an undertaking, an idea; anything that
makes the human being focus all of
their energy towards accomplishing
that which they so desire.
Today, faced with a rational culture, the
fire of passion seems to be extinguishing,
because that space for adventure and
boldness, the things that come from
the heart, have been overtaken by the

scientific method of behavior: think,
reflect, evaluate, then act.
However, having such a structured
attitude towards life rarely results in a
full life, and so, those that follow their
internal “craziness” and go all out for
the things, people or wishes that will
apparently make them happy (even if it
means failing in their endeavors) tend
to smile more than the people that are
pragmatic and extremely organized.
At least that’s what passionate folks
say, who have taken an old concept
to heart: “we might have lost, but boy
we had fun”.
Noted German philosopher Friedrich
Hegel said it all before: “Nothing great
in the world has been accomplished
without great passion”. He was referring to that white hot passion that
drives us to make good on the actions,
ideas, plans and affections that give
life meaning. Felipe Howard, one of
the founding partners of Latitud 90, a
tourism agency, knows this well.
A diferencia del enamoramiento, donde
el objeto es siempre la persona amada,
en la pasión lo puede ser un proyecto,
un trabajo, un viaje, un emprendimiento,
una idea, cualquier cosa que haga que
el ser humano vuelque toda su energía
en la consecución de ese deseo que
tanto quiere.
Hoy, ante una cultura racional, el fuego
de la pasión parece extinguirse, pues
ese espacio para las aventuras y las
osadías, esas que emanan desde el
corazón, han quedado relegadas ante
el método científico del actuar: pienso,
reflexiono, evalúo, luego actúo.
Sin embargo, tanto adoctrinamiento
ante la vida escasas veces redunda
en plenitud y, entonces, aquellos que
siguen sus “locuras” internas y se la
juegan por aquellas cosas, personas o
deseos que aparentemente los harán felices, aun fracasando más en sus empresas, suelen cosechar más sonrisas que
aquellos que actúan con pragmatismo y
ordenamientos severos. Así, al menos,
afirman los apasionados, quienes han
hecho propio el viejo adagio que versa:
“a pesar de la derrota, lo comido y lo
bailado, no lo quita nadie”.
Ya lo decía el destacado filósofo alemán Friedrich Hegel: “Nada grande
se ha hecho en el mundo sin una gran
pasión”. Se trata de aquella materia
incandescente que nos conduce hacia la
concreción de aquellas acciones, ideas,
planes, expresión de afectos que dan
sentido a la vida. Felipe Howard, uno de
los socios fundadores de la empresa de
turismo Latitud 90, lo tiene claro.

Living with passion
Journalist Felipe Howard has always been
an adventurer. Ever since he was little he
enjoyed extreme sports -even though he
doesn’t think of them as extreme- as well
as trips to unknown places and getting in
touch with nature. It should come as no
surprise then, that if he could do anything
else, he would “watch whales all day”, he
tells us straight-faced.
His many outdoor activities led him to
develop what has presently become more
than his job, it has become his “life project”. We’re talking about Latitud 90, a
company devoted to specialty tourism that
offers excursions that are impossible to
access through traditional channels.

people and the conviction behind his every
word. Sporting a wide grin and uncontrollable energy, he lives everything he does
with intensity and is always on the lookout
for new challenges.
No matter how exotic, he never goes on
an excursion without his 14 month old
son Manuel and his wife. Even when he’s
kayaking or trekking through the Torres del
Paine, Manuel is at his side.
He always wanted to put together a large-scale nationwide project, something
appealing and innovative that could do
some good and contribute to the wellbeing
of others. In that spirit, he and school chum
Alberto Gana founded Latitud 90 in 1997,
wanting to communicate a belief that has
marked their lives: “We think that travelling
is an experience that changes people”.
Vivir con pasión
Felipe Howard, periodista, ha sido siempre
un aventurero. Desde pequeño le gustaron
los deportes extremos, aunque para él no
lo sean, los viajes a lugares desconocidos
y el contacto con lo natural. No por nada
si pudiera elegir hacer otra cosa, “contemplaría ballenas todo el día”, expresa
convencido.

Felipe es un tipo inquieto y entusiasta. Se
le nota en su manera de relacionarse con la
gente y en la convicción de sus palabras. De
sonrisa amplia y energía desbordada, vive
con intensidad cada cosa que hace y anda
siempre en busca de nuevos desafíos.
No hay excursión, por más exótica que
parezca, de la cual no vaya acompañado
de Manuel, su hijo de 1 año y tres meses, y
su señora. Incluso cuando navega en kayak
o recorre las Torres del Paine, Manuel va
a su lado.
Siempre tuvo el deseo de materializar un
gran proyecto a nivel nacional, algo atractivo, innovador y que pudiera satisfacer y
contribuir a generar algún bien a otros.
Con ese espíritu, él y su amigo de colegio,
Alberto Gana, fundaron en 1997 Latitud90,

Reason versus passion
Experience has shown us that the level of competition
present in the world today is destroying that romantic,
crazy spirit to live life to the fullest. The only intensity
we have left, are long work days and the uphill battle
of climbing the social ladder.
This way, the world feels compelled to strive for the
things that are supposed to be a must when it comes
to day to day life, even though they don’t have to;
treating those that are guided by their passions as if
they were unquestionably mad, immature, as if they
were unclear about the big picture.
We should think: thank god for madness!
The craziness of love, quite similar to the madness
of passion, is never put into question; moreover, it is
considered an enviable state. So then, what about
passion?
What’s happening now is that our culture operates
using the logic of the scientific method. It seems
that magic realism isn’t so convincing anymore. The
politically correct handbook tells us it is imprudent and
wrong to act without knowing exactly what the result
of those actions will be.
Apparently, society is willing to punish those that act
passionately, and at the same time, human beings are
becoming repressed and are afraid to go against the
establishment. Passion is risk, it is entrepreneurship,
it’s about making mistakes, and this last point is
frowned upon nowadays.
Even so, we must point out that neither extreme
rationalism nor extreme madness ever guarantee
results. The important thing is to be authentic and
act in accordance with what you wish to be and do
at your core.

Razón versus pasión
La experiencia dice que la competitividad del
mundo está destruyendo ese ímpetu romántico y

que va quedando son largas jornadas laborales
y la esquiza batalla por escalar posicionamiento
social.
Así, el mundo se siente obligado a juzgar por lo
que, sin ser ley, va primando a la hora de vivir.
Como si aquellos que viven guiados por la pasión,
sean incontestablemente locos, inmaduros, faltos
de claridad.
¡Bendita locura! debiéramos pensar.
La locura del amar, pareciéndose mucho a la
locura de la pasión, no es cuestionada, sino que
se considera un estado deseable. Pero, entonces,
¿qué pasa con la pasión?
Sucede que nuestra cultura opera desde la lógica
del método científico y, entonces, el realismo
mágico ya no parece convencer. El manual de
conducta políticamente correcto indica que es imprudente y desacertado actuar sin conocer exactamente aquello que mi acto desencadenará.
Pareciera que la sociedad sancionara a quien
actúa desde la pasión y, al mismo tiempo, el ser
humano se reprime de ir contra lo establecido. La
pasión es riesgo, es emprendimiento, es error y,
esto último, hoy, es muy mal visto.
Aún así, cabe destacar que ni locura ni racionalismo extremo podrán nunca asegurarnos resultados,
lo importante es auténtico y actuar alineado con lo
que uno -en lo más profundo- desea ser y hacer.

sane people need something that allows
them to let off some steam. Some indulge freely, others do not dare. Some
save it for their private moments and
others do so anonymously.
Famous poet Vicente Garcia Huidobro
used to say, “If I don’t do at least one
crazy thing a day, it means I’m dead”.
Given the facts before us, these words
ring truer than ever.
Society, industry, families, and the
country need “crazy people” to inject a
dose of passion into things now more

La pasión es a la vida, como el amor a
los enamorados. Y así las cosas, aún los
más serios y cuerdos necesitan de algo
que los impulse a derrochar energía.
Algunos se lo permiten libremente;
otros, no se atreven. Hay quienes se lo
reservan para la intimidad y, también
los hay quienes lo expresan desde el
anonimato.
“Si no realizo al menos una locura al
día, quiere decir que estoy muerto”,
decía el famoso poeta Vicente Huidobro,
palabras que a la luz de los hechos,

With nine records under their belt, the most famous Mexican pop group for modern
day romantics, began their promotional tour through Latin America. “Un dia mas”
(One more day), the title of the record, is hitting stores and Reik is working nonstop. Behind the spotlight, the bright lights and flashes, three friends share more
than their regular everyday life. They’re joined by a shared passion: music, this
passion is what fuels them for travelling around the world and singing about love.
Con nuevo disco bajo el brazo, el grupo pop mexicano más famoso entre los románticos
de hoy, comenzó su promoción por América Latina. “Un día más”, nombre de la placa,
aparece a la venta y Reik no para de trabajar. Detrás de los focos, luces y flashes, un
trío de amigos comparten algo más que el día a día. Los une una pasión en común: la
música, la misma por la que hoy recorren el mundo cantándole al amor.
They’re hanging out in the hotel lobby, kidding around
and tuning their guitars. The token journalist shows up,
then another, and then a photographer. “Jesus, sign this
autograph for the camera”; “Bibi, pose with this girl”;
“Julio, don’t move, we’re going to take a picture”. These
are just three of the ten thousand instructions they receive.
It’s morning and outside November is dealing out one of
the coldest days of Spring.
The three Mexican musicians pose next to the pool with
gusto, sign autographs and even warm up to singing a
few of their songs.
“Warning, we’ve only got about three neurons left after
so much work”, states an eloquent Bibi. And if that
isn’t clear enough, he adds “And we use them up by
saying the first stupid thing we
can think of”.
New album, old dreams
The three of them laugh and the
press does too. Mixing pleasure
and their obligations comes easy
to them. They like what they do,
even though the long hours wear
them down. They always dreamed of

afinando sus guitarras. Aparece el periodista de rigor,
luego otro y después un fotógrafo. “Jesús, firma este
autógrafo para la cámara”; “Bibi, posa con esta chica”;
“Julio, no te muevas que te vamos a tomar una foto”,
son tres de las diez mil instrucciones que reciben. Es de
mañana y afuera noviembre nos regala uno de los días
más fríos de primavera.
Entusiastas los tres músicos mexicanos posan al lado
de una piscina, reparten autógrafos y hasta se animan a
cantar sus canciones.
“Advertencia, nos quedan tres neuronas por tanto trabajo”, dice un elocuente Bibi. Y, por si no quedara claro,
agrega: “Y las usamos hablando cuanta estupidez se
nos ocurra”.
Nuevo disco, viejos sueños
Los tres ríen y la prensa también. Y es que combinar el
placer con la obligación les resulta fácil. Les gusta lo que
hacen, aunque las largas horas de trabajo los fatigan.
Siempre soñaron con hacer música y como se conocen
de toda la vida, el proyecto de formar una banda musical
nació en la comodidad de una casa, en algún lugar de
México. Escribieron algunas canciones, grabaron un par
de demos y el resultado fue bautizado como Reik, el grupo
making music, and since they’ve known each other their
whole lives, the idea of starting up a band was born in
the comfort of a home some place in Mexico. They wrote
a few songs, recorded a couple of demos and the result
was christened Reik, the pop band that’s all over Chilean
radio stations with hits such as “Sabes” (You Know) and
“Inolvidable” (Unforgettable).
Jesus Navarro is the singer and romantic of the trio. At
age 22, his powerful voice is known the world over for his
declarations of love set to music. Gilberto “Bibi” Marin is
25 and Julio Ramirez, the youngest, is only 20. They write
the guitar pieces, handle some backup vocals on the songs
and play around like kids, joking with every member of the
press that wants to interview them. The appointment for
talking to Tronwell Magazine is set at San
Cristobal Tower hotel.
Their sixth visit to the country is special,
because the promotion of “Un Dia Mas”
is the latest record to firmly establish
them at the top of every chart. Making a
record is nothing new for them; however, today they feel especially pleased
and proud with the way this album
turned out. The reason: nine of the
tracks were written personally by
these three musicians and friends.

Jesús Navarro es el vocalista y el más romántico de los

es en el hotel San Cristóbal Tower.
Su sexta visita a Chile tiene un motivo especial, pues es la promoción
de “Un día más”, el último disco que
los consagra en los primeros lugares de todos los ranking
musicales. Grabar un disco no es algo nuevo para ellos;
sin embargo, hoy se sienten especialmente contentos y
orgullosos con el resultado de esta placa. La razón: nueve
de los temas fueron escritos de puño y letra del trío de
músicos y amigos.
“Musically, there are a lot of differences, but the most
important thing is that we’ve become more connected
with a certain sound and it’s becoming clearer and clearer.
We’re more convinced than ever about what we’re doing
on this record”, says Bibi.
Their two days in Chile have been nothing but work. Radio
and TV interviews and spending time with the fans that
crowd the hotel entrance are just some of the activities the
trio performs with an honest smile and a great disposition
for doing what they like to do right.
It’s not singing for singing’s sake
After making their dream come true -that dream shared
by all musicians in love, who, through their music, make
others fall in love- now comes the other side of the bargain.
Not everything is peaches and cream; the intensity of living
and working together can sometimes take its toll.
Although the guys from Reik knew each other from before,
working day to day made things different because they
practically started living together. Their laidback attitude
and their hunger for achieving greatness helped them
adjust, just in time for kicking off the promotional tours.
“Musicalmente hay varias diferencias, pero la más importante es que vamos identificándonos cada vez más
con un sello y haciéndolo más evidente. Es el disco del
que estamos más convencidos de lo que queremos”,
confiesa Bibi.
Los dos días que llevan en Chile han sido trabajo puro.
Entrevistas en radios, canales de televisión y compartir
con las fans que se agolpan en las puertas del hotel, son
solamente algunas de las actividades que el trío realiza
con una sonrisa franca y la disposición de
hacer bien lo que más les gusta hacer.
No es cantar por cantar
Tras hacer el sueño realidad, ese de
músicos enamorados que, a través de
canciones enamoran a otros, llegó la
contraparte de la maravilla. Y es que
no todo es miel sobre hojuelas, pues
la convivencia intensa de trabajar y
vivir juntos, a veces, pasa la cuenta.
Si bien los chicos de Reik se conocían de antes, el
trabajo del día a día llegó a ser muy distinto, pues pasaron
a vivir prácticamente juntos. Su carácter relajado y sus
ganas de lograr grandes cosas hicieron que lograran
afiatarse, todavía más, justo a tiempo de comenzar las
giras promocionales.

“We know each other; the good, the bad and the ugly”,
says Jesus, while Bibi comments that “we’re like a family,
we were left with no choice but to learn from each other’s
strengths and flaws”.
They’ve learned to overcome routine by telling jokes, coming
up with nicknames for the people close to them, singing and
being happy. This makes it easier to deal with the multiple
interviews, shows and onscreen appearances.
It took them six months to create “Un dia mas”, but when it
comes time to recall the exact date the set was born, they
are befuddled. It’s just that what seems like a long time,
was “just a couple of minutes” for them. They conceived
the record in July, started writing and ended up with 50
songs in August, 9 of which were ready for the album.
After that, they flew to Argentina, recording the songs
that would come alive on the new album for two months.
It was all partying and relaxing as they recall, and the
result is in record stores now.

What moves Reik?
- Julio: Music takes the lead for me. But I also love a
good talk with people that are looking for things that go
beyond superficial issues.
- Bibi: I like to get to know other cultures, other customs

where we’re going.
- Jesus: I’m passionate about equality and people’s rights.
It’s a subject I’d like to touch upon in our music, but that
time will come.
Entre tanta broma y declaración, era tiempo de que Reik
entonara el coro de aquella canción que para ellos es su
favorita. Jesús sonríe y Julio bromea con tener que llamar
a México para pedir permiso. De un momento a otro, y sin
guitarra, el vocalista comienza a entonar la dulce melodía
de “Sabes”. El hotel completo se paraliza.
Sus letras tienen mucho de amor y desamor, difícil no
identificarse con una. Los chicos de Reik lo saben y buscan encantar a su público haciendo lo que todo artista
quisiera: “que el público se identifique con lo que haces”,
dice Julio.
The last romantics
Pero al bajarse del escenario los muchachos siguen
siendo igual de románticos. La lógica para entenderlo,
según Jesús, es muy simple: “no puedes interpretar algo
que no sientas”.
Between all the ribbing and confessions, it was time for
Reik to sing the chorus of their favorite song. Jesus smiles
and Julio kids that he might have to call Mexico and ask
for permission. Suddenly, with no guitars, the lead singer
breaks into the sweet melody of “Sabes”. The entire hotel
comes to a standstill.
But offstage the group is just as romantic. The logic
towards understanding this, according to Jesus, is quite
simple: “you can’t play something you don’t feel”.
They confess to being intense, with a lust for life and
everything that goes on in it. Music, their great passion,
is what they share in life, but they’re also interested in
good conversation, getting to know the places they’ll visit
on tour and enjoying life.
“Some of us are more passionate about certain things.
However, we’ve all got that romantic side people expect

Escriben sus canciones a partir de lo que cada uno siente
o se les ocurre y terminan fundiendo letras con acordes,
para lograr un resultado distinto cada vez que graban.
Les gusta Shakira, Juanes y Maroon Five, entre otros
artistas, pero no existe una influencia directa. “Más que
te sirva tal o cual estilo, aquello que escuchas te inspira
y te permite que algo nuevo suene dentro de tu cabeza“,
explica Jesús. “Todos los músicos tomamos inspiración
de algo o de alguien, somos un montón de copiones”,
cuenta y ríe.
Los últimos románticos
They wrote the songs from what they each feel or what
comes to them and end up marrying lyrics and chords,
obtaining something different every time they record. They
like Shakira, Juanes and Maroon Five, just to name a few,
but there is no direct influence. “More than having one
style or another work for you, what you listen to inspires
you and allows something new to sound inside your head”,
explains Jesus. “All musicians are inspired by something or
someone; we’re all a bunch of copy cats”, he laughs.
Their lyrics are heavy on love and love lost so it’s hard
not to relate with at least one. The guys from Reik know
this and seek to bewitch their audience by doing what
any artist would like to do: “have the crowd identify with
what you’re doing”, says Julio.

felices. Así es más fácil lidiar con las múltiples entrevistas,
presentaciones y apariciones en pantalla.
Seis meses demoraron en crear “Un día más”, pero al
intentar recordar la fecha exacta de génesis, se complican.
Es que aquello que resulta largo tiempo, para ellos fue
“cosa de minutos”. Desde julio lo pensaron, comenzaron
a escribir y terminaron agosto con 50 canciones, de las

y de todo lo que pasa en ella. La música, su gran pasión,
es lo que comparten en su vida, pero también les interesan
las buenas conversaciones, saber de los lugares a los que

“Algunos somos más apasionados para algunas cosas.
“Sin embargo, todos tenemos esa veta romántica que la
gente espera que tengamos. Si no, no podríamos escribir
canciones”, expresa Jesús.
¿Qué apasiona a Reik?
- Julio: La música para mí toma la delantera. Pero también
sucumbo ante una buena plática, con gente que busque
cosas más allá de las superficiales.
- Bibi: Me gusta conocer de otras culturas, otras costumbres y tradiciones. Aprender datos de donde esté y
de donde vayamos a ir.
- Jesús: A mí me apasiona la igualdad y los derechos de
las personas. Es un tema que me gustaría poder tocar en
nuestra música, pero ya llegará el momento.

Preparazione:
Preparación:
Per fare la pasta in casa, il segreto è uno: usare un chilo di farina per dieci uova. La
pasta si lascia riposare 20 minuti prima di passarla per la macchina.
Para hacer pasta en la casa, el secreto es uno: usar un kilo de harina por diez huevos.
La pasta se deja descansar 20 minutos antes de pasarla por la máquina.
In una padella, scaldare l’olio di oliva. Agiungere l’aglio tagliato ben fine, dorare il
prezzemolo triturato ed il peperoncino rosso. Continuare a dorare. Aggiungere le
acciughe (intere o tagliate), i capperi ed il vino bianco. Lasciare evaporare.
En una sartén, calentar el aceite de oliva. Agregar el ajo picado bien fino, dorar el
perejil picado y el ají cacho de cabra. Seguir dorando. Luego agregar las anchoas
(enteras o picadas), las alcaparras y el vino blanco. Dejar evaporar.
A los ingredientes anteriores, agregar la salsa de tomate y un poco de sal. Dejar
cocinar a fuego lento por unos 30 minutos. Retirar y agregar sobre los fetuccini
al dente.
Una volta che la pasta è cotta, non bisogna raffreddarla con acqua fredda per
fermare il processo di cottura. Questo la fa perdere il suo sapore originale. La
pasta si scolla quasi al dente e si mischia con il succo sul fuoco acceso affinché
si integrino i sapori.
Agli ingredienti anteriori, aggiungere il succo di pomodoro ed un po’ di sale.
Lasciare cucinare a fuoco lento per circa 30 minuti. Ritirare ed aggiungere sui
fetuccini al dente.
Una vez que la pasta está cocida, no hay que enfriarla con agua helada para detener
el proceso de cocción. Esto hace que pierda su sabor original. La pasta se saca
casi al dente, se cuela y se mezcla con la salsa sobre el quemador encendido para
que se integren los sabores.

Laughter for the soul
Laughing feeds the soul and many other things. This is confirmed by those who have dared to try the funniest and most modern eastern technique, which
arrived to our country just a few years ago. During the sessions, bursting out laughing is the main objective.
The technique developed in 1995 by Indian
physician Madan Kataria, reached the ears
of Chilean teacher Tosha Tobias some years
later. Her excellent sense of humor and
eagerness to do new things made her see
in this alternative an opportunity of taking a
path she always found interesting: to laugh
and make people laugh, thus benefiting
the world with the properties inherent to
having a good time.
This way, she created the possibility in
Chile for practicing this discipline dubbed
“Laughter Yoga”, teaching hundreds of
people how to burst out laughing as a
powerful therapeutic tool.
What is Laughter Yoga?
It is about laughing for no reason. The
sessions are made up of body exercises
in a group, using yoga techniques and

also exercises consisting of relaxation
and pantomime which cause unconditional
laughter that after some minutes turns into
real and contagious laughter.
The idea, which started with just five
people in a park in India, has become a
worldwide phenomenon with more than
5,000 social laughter clubs in 55 countries,
Chile among them. Stand outs among its
benefits include releasing endorphins and
bringing oxygen to the body. All this based
on the fact that the body cannot differentiate between fake and real laughter. In this
sense, one gets the same physiological
and psychological benefits.
This practice relaxes the mind and creates
a state of complete happiness and eagerness to live; it becomes an informal and
effective way of meditation. It strongly
fights depression, reaching an emotional balance throughout the whole body,
boosting our immune system. The result:
it protects us against colds, coughs and
viral infections, among others. Also, it is
an excellent cardiovascular and aerobic
exercise.

• It increases optimism, making negative
emotions disappear.
• It develops personality, creativity and
leadership skills.
• It promotes team work.
• It boosts self-esteem.
Counter indications
• This is not a magic cure. It is about a kind
of alternative and supplementary medicine.
This means, it does not replace medical
treatment in case it is necessary.
• It is not recommended for people who
suffer from bloody hemorrhoids, hernias,
persistent cough, asthma or any other
acute symptoms illnesses.
• Heart patients or people who suffer from
high blood pressure should not practice this
kind of exercise. The same is recommended
in case of patients suffering from urinary
incontinence or mental disorders.

El “Yoga de la Risa”
Carcajadas para el espíritu
Reír alimenta el alma y mucho más. Así, al menos, lo afirman quienes se han atrevido a probar la técnica oriental más moderna y divertida, llegada hace sólo
un par de años a nuestro país. En ella, reír de buena gana es la consigna principal.
La técnica desarrollada en 1995 por el
doctor Madan Kataria, médico indio, llegó a
oídos de Tosha Tobías, educadora chilena,
un par de años después. Su buen humor y
las ganas de hacer algo distinto, la hicieron
ver en esta alternativa un buen ejemplo para emprender el camino que siempre deseó:
reír y hacer reír al resto, beneficiando al
mundo de las propiedades intrínsecas de
pasar un rato agradable.
De este modo, abrió la posibilidad en Chile
para practicar una disciplina denominada
“Yoga de la Risa”, educando a cientos de
personas para expandir las carcajadas
como el remedio por excelencia.
¿Qué es el Yoga de la Risa?
Se trata de reír sin motivo alguno. Las
sesiones constan de ejercicios grupales
de respiración mediante técnicas yóguicas,
además de relajación y pantomima las
que provocan risas inducidas, para luego
hacerlas espontáneas.
La iniciativa, que partió con cinco personas
reunidas en un parque de India, hoy cuenta
con más de 5 mil “Clubes de la Risa”
profesionales en 55 países del mundo,
entre ellos, Chile, donde el fenómeno crece
día a día.
Entre sus beneficios destacan el aumento
de las endorfinas del cuerpo y la oxigenación del mismo. Esto, bajo la premisa de
que el cuerpo no reconoce la diferencia
entre la risa provocada y la verdadera. En
este sentido, los beneficios fisiológicos
son reales.
Su práctica relaja la mente y crea un estado
de completa alegría de vivir, convirtiéndose en una informal y efectiva forma de
meditación. Es un potente antidepresivo
que logra un estado analgésico en todo
el cuerpo, reforzando además el sistema
inmunológico. El resultado: prevención
de resfríos, tos y enfermedades virales,
entre otras patologías simples. Además
es un excelente ejercicio cardiovascular
y aeróbico.

Navidad con Sentido (Christmas with Meaning) Program
Regaining the fundamentals
The end of the year stopped being a time to come together quite a while ago; a time to take stock of the good
done or things left undone, and what drives us to express the feelings left behind by the passing year and what
the next one should bring. The material side has gained ground and imposed itself as the premise behind the
celebration of Christmas, completely forgetting its original idea.
One fine day, a group of businessmen led
by Pedro Arellano, director of the Desafio
foundation, decided to recover the true
meaning of Christmas. The question was
clear: “How does your company celebrate
Christmas?” The responses brought on
some tough questioning, for they proved
that the festivity was based on material
aspects, solely related to the company’s
year-end bash.
The impact of their discovery was such
that, together, they decided to search for
the formula that allowed them to regain the
true meaning of Christmas, sharing it with
their employees, providers, customers and
their families. A contagious chain of sorts.
Thus, Navidad con Sentido (Christmas
with Meaning) was born, and in 2008, it’s
turning 13 years old.
A bit of history
Navidad con Sentido (Christmas with
Meaning) is a program developed by the
Desafio foundation. According to Francisca
Fernandez, the person in charge of the
relationship with the Desafio companies,
the businesses involved were betting on
boosting good on-the-job practices and
projecting Christian values when it came
time for interaction, but during Christmas,
Santa Claus was more important than the
birth of Christ.
“The question posed by Pedro (Arellano)
went deep. It was a wake-up call for
businessmen, because workers needed
to experience Christmas with a spirit of
reflection, more in tune with what they did
with their families, in the privacy of their
homes” says Francisca.
That’s why Navidad con Sentido (Christmas
with Meaning) became a guide that
enables companies to create activities that
reinforce the values behind Christmas.
The results have surpassed all expectations. Banco Estado for example, switched
the recognizable Santa sleigh –strung up
in the middle of downtown Santiago- for
a large nativity scene. In other companies,
altarpieces and simply saying good morning regained their popularity.
The richness of the program, its continuity
and growth, all lie in the fact that it has
rescued human values and has known
how to keep up with the times. Because
Chilean industry, thanks to globalization
and out of respect for freedom, has become ecumenical. So, as Francisca puts
it, “Christmas cannot be experienced solely through
Christianity, there has
to be room for everyone.
That’s why the program
promotes universal values that enhance the
human being, making
them more generous,
sensitive, loving, simple
and happier”.
On that same note, Navidad con Sentido
(Christmas with Meaning) has managed
to get the corporate world to make a
commitment towards social causes, being
there for people who live in vulnerable
situations. For the people behind the program, it’s not about charity for charity’s
sake; economic aid must always be accompanied by bringing people together.
“It’s about sharing experiences, realities

and caring. The idea is to create the beginning of a constant attitude of solidarity”.

For this Christmas in 2008, the program is
joining the campaign led by the Comunidad
de Organizaciones Solidarias (Community
of Charitable Organizations): Enamorate
de dar (Fall in love with giving).
“Navidad con Sentido (Christmas with
Meaning), especially now in these times
of economic recession, is looking more
towards giving one‘s self. Give yourself
creatively, leave behind all reservations,
selfishness, free yourself of your reservations toward others and contribute, with
your own life, with everything you are, to
do something better for others”, explains
Francisca.
In times of economic crisis, where resources are scarce and saving is the rule, it’s
more than worth your while to pay closer
attention and get involved with initiatives
that allow you to use your creativity, giving
intangible presents like listening, respect,
kindness. Considering the complexity and
chaos surrounding us, they might be more
welcome that perfumes or chocolate.
Some could say they might even come
as a surprise.

Un buen día un grupo de empresarios
liderados por Pedro Arellano, director de
fundación Desafío, decidió recuperar el verdadero sentido de la navidad. La pregunta
fue directa: “¿Cómo tu empresa celebrará
esta navidad?”. Las respuestas produjeron
un duro cuestionamiento, pues constataron
que el festejo se basaba en aspectos materiales, relacionados únicamente con la
fiesta de fin de año de la empresa.
Fue tal el remezón que decidieron buscar
juntos las fórmulas que les permitieran
recuperar el sentido real de la Navidad,
compartiéndolo con sus trabajadores, proveedores, clientes y ellos con sus familias.
Una suerte de cadena contagiosa. Así,
entonces, nació Navidad con Sentido, que
este 2008 cumple 13 años.
Programa Navidad con Sentido:
Recuperando lo fundamental
Hace tiempo que el fin de año dejó de ser ese espacio de encuentro, de balances sobre cuánto de bueno
se hizo o se dejó de hacer y qué motivaba a expresar los sentimientos que el viejo año dejó y que el nuevo
debiera traer. El aspecto material ganó terreno y se instaló como premisa de la celebración navideña, una que
ha echado al olvido su sentido originario.
Un poco de historia
Navidad con Sentido es un programa desarrollado por fundación Desafío. Según
cuenta Francisca Fernández, encargada de
la relación con las empresas de Desafío,
las empresas asociadas apostaban por
incentivar las buenas prácticas laborales y
proyectar en el trato los valores cristianos,
pero en navidad, adquiría más importancia
el viejito pascuero que el nacimiento de
Jesucristo.
“El cuestionamiento realizado con Pedro
(Arellano) caló hondo. Fue una lucecita
para los empresarios, porque los trabajadores tenían la necesidad de vivir la
navidad en un espíritu más reflexivo, más
en consecuencia a lo que en sus familias,
en la intimidad del hogar, acostumbraban
a hacer”, expresa Francisca.
De allí que Navidad con Sentido se transformó en una orientación que permite a las
empresas generar actividades que realcen
los valores de la navidad.
Los resultados han superado las expectativas. Banco Estado, por ejemplo, cambió
el reconocido trineo pascuero -colgado
en pleno centro de Santiago- por un gran
pesebre, y en otras empresas adquirieron
fuerza los retablos humanos y el saludo
de buenos días.
La riqueza del programa, su continuidad y
crecimiento, radica en que ha rescatado los
valores humanos y ha sabido adaptarse a
los tiempos. Eso, porque la empresa chilena, fruto de la globalización y el respeto
por las libertades, se ha vuelto ecuménica.
Entonces, tal como explica Francisca, “la
navidad no puede ser sólo experimentada
desde el cristianismo, debe ser un espacio
para todos. Por ello, el programa favorece
la vivencia de valores universales que
promuevan al ser humano, haciéndolo
más generoso, sensible, cariñoso, simple,
más feliz”.
Asimismo, Navidad con Sentido ha permitido que la empresa logre comprometerse
con causas sociales, acompañando a personas que viven situaciones de vulnerabilidad. Para los gestores del programa, no
se trata de caridad por caridad, sino que la
ayuda económica debe ir siempre acompañada del encuentro entre personas.

a hacer algo mejor por otros”, comenta
Francisca.
Esta navidad 2008 el programa se suma
a la campaña liderada por la Comunidad
Bien merece la pena, entonces, en tiempo
de crisis económica, en donde los recursos
escasean y el ahorro es la regla, involucrarse con mayor entusiasmo en iniciativas que
permitan la creatividad, mediante el regalo
de intangibles como el escuchar, el respeto,
la amabilidad, que en épocas de complejidad y caos, suelen ser mejor valorados
que perfumes o chocolates. Al menos, dirán
algunos, podrían sorprender.

Christmas and Gift-Giving
The story of Christmas harks back to the
birth of Christ. Mary, assisted by Joseph,
was forced to give birth to the son of God
in a stable, given that there were no vacancies at any of the inns that night.
Nowadays -- 2,008 years later -- we gather
together as a community to celebrate this
life-affirming ritual in the company of our
loved ones.
This celebration is characterized by a peculiar ritual: people give gifts to members of
their community and receive them in turn.
Nevertheless, one is led to wonder -- what
exactly is the point of gift-giving?
In the past, gift-giving was a way to make
the presence of a person, a family or a community felt in the lives of others. Through
gift-giving, the Christmas spirit was shared
with the gift receiver. In fact, gifts have
traditionally fulfilled their function best
when gathered or crafted by the gift giver – a masterpiece from the hands of a

donor, a sack of harvested wheat, a letter,
a fattened heifer, etc. – in such a way
that the gift giver’s handiwork is present
in the gift itself.
In a similar fashion, gifts were expected
to be impractical, that is to say, they were
not valued for their usefulness, but for their
beauty, their intrinsic meaning. In any case,
what was sought above all else was that
in the act of giving prevail the idea of the
gift giver giving of his person and of his
presence hopefully outliving the present.
From this perspective, the ritual that accompanies Christmas is most admirable
and full of humanity, given that it calls
upon us to share and tell each other, “here
we lie, all together walking down the path
of life.” But nowadays we face two great
evils: ritual has slipped into routine, and
gifts no longer constitute a way of giving
of ourselves but of sharing the stress of
Christmas shopping.
In this way Christmas becomes quite senseless, for instead of spending time with
our loved ones, we linger on in stores
feverishly shopping. Nothing could be
further from the original sentiment and
nothing more alienating than wishing to
express love through compromise.
But all in all, there is something even more
troubling. And that is that while we say “I
am with you” to our loved ones through
the exchange of gifts, there are those
who we do not deign to cast a passing
glance, or, as an oversight, we say “you
are invisible.”
Not unlike Joseph and Mary, there are over
30 Chilean families who cannot provide an
acceptable home to raise their children.
This is the most blatant form that their
unimportance or, worse still, their sheer
invisibility in our lives takes.
Christmas celebration and gifts only ever
reach their true meaning when we all
join in, when we dance together. And yet,
there are those who dance without feeling
the music and those who we don’t allow
to enjoy it.
Christmas spirit invites us to be all-inclusive, to bestow life shared generously,
above all, with those in need. Let us do
what needs to be done -- but without
falling into routine.

Regalos y Navidad
La historia de la Navidad se remonta a
la historia del nacimiento de Cristo. En
aquella instancia, María, junto a José, dio a
luz al hijo de Dios en un establo, porque no
hubo lugar ni espacio en ninguna posada
para ellos esa noche.
Hoy, 2008 años después, celebramos socialmente este rito en el que aprovechamos de reunirnos como comunidad para
festejar la vida y la existencia junto a los
nuestros.
Esta celebración tiene, en sí misma, un
ritual que la hace particular: cada uno le
hace un regalo a quienes son miembros de
su comunidad y recibe también de ellos un
presente. Sin embargo, ¿cuál es el sentido
que tienen los regalos?
Antiguamente, los regalos (los dones) eran
la forma en que una persona, una familia o
una comunidad se hacía presente en otra.
A través de un regalo, el espíritu quedaba
presente ante el regalado. De hecho, clásicamente, los regalos cumplen mejor esta
función en tanto son obsequios hechos y
fabricados por aquellos que regalan - una
obra de arte hecha por quien dona, un
saco de trigo cosechado, una carta, un
novillo alimentado, etc. - de tal manera,
que el trabajo de la persona que regala
está presente en el regalo en sí.
De la misma manera, se esperaba que los
regalos no fueran elementos prácticos, es
decir, que no se valoraran por su utilidad,
sino por su belleza, por su significado. De
cualquier forma, lo que se buscaba era
que, en el acto de regalar, prevaleciera la
idea de que la persona se hiciera presente
ante otra y estar ahí por el tiempo que ese
regalo perdurara.
Desde esta perspectiva, el rito que acompaña a la Navidad es precioso y lleno de
humanidad, pues busca que cada uno
se muestre presente ante el resto y nos
digamos “aquí estamos, todos juntos y
reunidos, caminando en la vida”. Pero
hoy nos enfrentamos a dos vicios: el rito
es rutina y el regalo ya no es para hacer-
nos presentes, sino que los regalos se
nos hacen presentes con stress desde
noviembre.
Así el asunto no tiene sentido, pues en
vez de estar junto a los nuestros, nos escondemos tras las tiendas apresurados
por comprar. Nada más alejado de la idea
original y nada más alienante que querer
expresar cariño por compromiso.
Con todo, existe algo aún más preocupante. Eso, porque mientras a los nuestros
les decimos “contigo estoy presente” a
través de los regalos, hay muchos otros
que al parecer les corremos la mirada, o
por omisión les decimos “ustedes están
ausentes”.
La fiesta de la Navidad y los regalos tienen
su sentido cuando todos participamos
de la fiesta; cuando todos bailamos. No
obstante, hay muchos que bailan sin sentir
la música y a muchos tampoco dejamos
escucharla.
El espíritu de la Navidad nos invita a la
inclusión, a compartir la vida desde lo
que somos y, sobre todo, con aquellos que
tienen necesidad. Hagamos lo que nos
corresponde hacer, sin caer en rutinas.

The Barrio Ingles (English Quarter) is nestled between Concepcion and Alegre hills and it stands out for its
walkways and many points that are interesting for tourists. Through the Concepcion elevator -the oldest
one in the city- one arrives to the famous Gervasoni promenade, where you can find the Lukas Museum
and the traditional Turri Café, which has one of the most spectacular views of Valparaiso bay.
In this neighborhood, where family homes have been transformed into boutique hotels, restaurants
and cafés -like El Desayunador, Vinilo Café, Lavanda Café and La Feliu de Montpellier- one may enjoy
unique architecture. The Atkinson promenade has an ample walkway, as does the Gervasoni promenade,
because, in the old days, the cannons that defended the city passed through here. Nowadays, they have
a privileged view of Valparaiso bay and are a favorite spot for enjoying the New Year fireworks.
When New Year comes around, theatre and dance companies, painters and musicians take to the streets
for three whole days to show off the best of their repertoire in the Valparaiso Cultural carnival. The main
stages are Sotomayor Plaza, Italia Park and the Ex Carcel (Former prison) Cultural Center. Activities stretch
on well into the port’s bohemian night and are always a tourist draw.

Dubai: The Other World
It’s curious, to say the least, that while the
world goes through an economic debacle,
there’s another world under construction.
Eccentricity or abundance, the truth is the
jewel of the Arabian gulf, Dubai, goes
against the grain of current events.
While everyone is betting on austerity and
savings, Dubai, a mixture of Islam, ultra
modernity and opulence, is a surprise from
every angle.
It belongs to the United Arab Emirates,
a region that has only been around for
three decades, and which went from being a small kingdom of nomads to an oil
powerhouse in record time. Nowadays, it
aspires to become one of the world’s most
important tourist and financial centers.

In order to achieve this, the so-called city
of gold is preparing to lead the most awe
inspiring architectural revolution of recent
times. It wasn’t enough to know that their
country would shortly be home to the
tallest tower in the world, Burj Dubai,
which will trounce the Taipei Financial
Center building in Taiwan with its 508
floors, they also had to get their hands
on the most extreme creativity out there
to shape a new world, a world still under
construction.
We are referring to World, 300 artificial
islets shaped like the world’s continents
and countries. The 1.8 billion US$ project
will span an area 9 kilometers long and 6
kilometers wide, all surrounded by an oval
breakwater. The only means of transpor-
tation between the islands is by sea or by
air, and each island of the “World” will
have dimensions between 23.2 and 83.6
thousand square meters and 50 to 100
meters of water between them.
Each island will be sold to selected buyers
and the price range starts at 6.85 million
US$. So if you’re interested, we suggest
you hurry, because there might not be any
left by the time you make up your mind.
Just ask former Formula 1 champ Michael
Schumacher, the first person to own an
island in the Arabian.
Now, if the new world isn’t appealing
enough, Dubai has a solution. If the idea
is being ready for the estimated 10 million tourists who will arrive in the city
in 2010, having the planet’s tallest tower
and a world in the sea just isn’t enough.
The authorities must have thought it
was necessary to also offer visitors the
Dubai Marina, with its 11 km of piers
and condos lining the coastline; not to
mention Dubailand, which promises to
be the largest entertainment complex on
Earth, including six theme parks and a
huge sporting city where you can practice
every sport you can think of, including an
enormous snow covered peak for skiing;
and we can’t leave out Hydropolis, the
world’s first underwater hotel.

Curioso resulta, a lo menos, que mientras
el mundo vive la debacle económica, exista
otro mundo en construcción. Excentricidad
o abundancia, lo cierto es que la joya del
golfo arábigo, Dubai, va a contra reloj del
actual devenir de los tiempos.
Sí, porque mientras todos apuestan por
austeridad y ahorro, Dubai, mezcla de
Islam, ultra modernidad y opulencia, sorprende por donde se le mire.
Por ello, la bien llamada ciudad de oro se
prepara para liderar la revolución arquitectónica más sorprendente del último tiempo.
No le bastó con saber que en poco tiempo
tendrá la torre más alta del mundo, Burj
Dubai, que con 700 metros destronará al
actual edificio Taipei Financial Center, en
Taiwán, con 508 pisos, sino que tuvo que
echar mano a la creatividad más extrema
para dar forma a un nuevo mundo, uno
todavía en construcción.
Perteneciente a los Emiratos Árabes, región que existe hace sólo tres décadas
y que en tiempo récord pasó de ser un
pequeño reino de nómadas a una próspera
potencia petrolera, hoy aspira a ser uno
de los centros turísticos y financieros más
importantes del mundo.
Se trata de World, 300 islotes artificiales
con las formas de los continentes y países
del mundo. El proyecto de US$ 1.8 mil
millones de dólares, cubrirá un área de
9 kilómetros de longitud y 6 de ancho,
rodeadas por un rompeolas ovalado. El
único medio de transporte entre las islas
será el marino o aéreo, y cada isla del
“Mundo” tendrá entre 23,2 a 83,6 mil
metros cuadrados, con 50 a 100 metros
de agua entre ellas.
Cada isla será vendida a compradores
seleccionados y sus precios comienzan en
US$ 6.85 millones. Así que si está interesado, le sugerimos apresurarse, porque
puede pasar que, cuando se decida, ya no
queden. Bien lo sabe el ex campeón de
Fórmula 1, Michael Schumacher, el primero
en hacerse de una isla en el arábigo.
Ahora, si el nuevo mundo no le parece
lo suficientemente atractivo, Dubai tiene
solución. Y es que si la idea es preparar
la ciudad para los diez millones de turistas
que se prevé llegarán en 2010, no podría
ser posible contar sólo con la torre más alta
del orbe y un mundo en el mar.
Es necesario, habrán pensado sus autoridades, ofrecer a los visitantes la Dubai
Marina, con sus 11 km. de muelles y condominios a lo largo de la costa; Dubailand,
que anuncia ser el centro de entretenimientos más grande del planeta, con seis
mundos temáticos y una mega ciudad
deportiva donde se podrán practicar todos
los deportes, incluido un enorme cerro nevado para esquiar, o Hydropolis, el primer
hotel submarino del mundo.

The boom of digital television
Let’s not fall behind digitalization!
From vinyl records to CDs, from VCR to DVD, from old to new. Technology moves forward and TVs won’t be left behind.
First, it was the analog signal transformed into cable TV, the same one that is presently trying to be digitalized, raising
doubts among consumers. Next, we’ll give you some tips about what to expect and what to buy.
What does digitalization mean?
It means a conversion from the analog signal to a reception free signal, which improves the picture and sound
quality, increasing the number of TV channels, allowing high definition and program information. Also, it
eliminates any existing vulnerability in the interference of the analog signal, thus allowing frequencies that
are not in use to actually be used in the creation of new channels.
What other advantages does digital TV present?
Consumers will be able to participate in the programs with this new digital signal. It’s all about this interactivity
with the audience that makes the difference. For example, in the case of advertising, consumers will be able
to get further information about the offered products. In the programs, people will be able to vote in a contest,
bet on who’s going to win a game or choose the end of a sitcom for instance.
What will happen with my current TV?
Old TVs won’t be obsolete. However, a decoder or set top box connected to an analog TV is necessary, that’s to
say, an integrated digital television. This means an investment in new sets in order to enjoy the signals along
with all the aforementioned benefits.
Waiting for flat screens
After the boom for plasma and LCD TVs, many experts have warned us about stopping this massive consumption due
to the danger of having digital televisions (the category this equipment belongs to) operating in our country under one
norm. This means choosing between American, Japanese or European standards, in other words, many of the models
hanging in Chilean living rooms and bedrooms could become obsolete.
There is the possibility of televisions dubbed “multinorm” that, although for a much higher price, do seem like the safest
choice.
According to sources from the Sernac, it is recommended to await the government resolution regarding which norm will
be implemented before deciding what to buy.
A bit of history
The analog television system used in Chile, called NTSC (National Television System Committee) –also used in the United
States, Japan and a number of other countries- was selected in the late 70’s. Thanks to the fact that this standard was compatible with the old black and white TV’s, it was not necessary to perform a complex transition, for whoever bought a color
television set saw in color, while the old black and white continued to function as usual.
Nowadays, the problem with digitalization lies in the fact that the current TV’s with analog receptors are incompatible with this
new technology, meaning that users will have to buy digital televisions or add a decoder to their current sets.
Digitilization of digital television is currently operating under three standards worldwide: ATSC (Advanced Television Systems
Committeee), originally from the United States; DVB (Digital Video Broadcasting), from the European Community; and ISDB
(Integrated Services Digital Broadcasting), from Japan. Operation between these digital television standards is incompatible,
which means that if we want public broadcasting to be received by everyone, both the television channel and the viewers have
to operate under the same standard of digital television, both in transmission and reception.

Primero fue la señal análoga transformada en TV cable, la misma que, por estos días, pretende digitalizarse llenando de dudas a los usuarios. A continuación le entregamos algunas respuestas
sobre qué esperar y qué comprar.
¿Qué significa la digitalización?
Significa cambiar de la señal análoga a una de libre recepción que mejora la calidad de la imagen y el sonido, aumentando la oferta de canales de
televisión, alta definición y guías de programas. Además elimina la vulnerabilidad de la interferencia de la señal analógica, permitiendo que frecuencias en desuso puedan utilizarse para la creación
de nuevos canales.
¿Qué otras ventajas tiene la televisión digital?
Con la nueva señal digital los usuarios podrán influir en los
programas. La interactividad del público aparece como la gran
novedad del sistema. Por ejemplo, en el caso de la publicidad,
los usuarios podrán acceder a la información complementaria
sobre los productos que se publicitan. En los programas se
podrá votar en un concurso, apostar sobre quién ganará un
partido o escoger el final de una serie, por ejemplo.
¿Qué pasará con mi actual televisor?
Los televisores antiguos no quedarán obsoletos. Sin embargo,
necesitarán un decodificador o set top box que se conecte a
un televisor análogo, es decir, un televisor digital integrado.
Esto significa invertir en nuevos aparatos para poder disfrutar de las señales con todos los beneficios anteriormente
mencionados.
Esperando por la pantalla plana
Tras el boom de la oferta por televisores plasma y LCD,
muchos expertos han advertido detener un poco su consumo
masivo; esto, tras el peligro de que los televisores digitales
(categoría a la que estos equipos pertenecen) opere en nuestro
país mediante una sola norma. Esto significa escoger entre la
americana, la japonesa o la europea. Es decir, varios de los
modelos que hoy adornan las salas y dormitorios de chilenos
podrían quedar obsoletos.
El boom de la televisión digital
¡Qué no nos pille la digitalización!
Existe la posibilidad de televisores denominados “multinorma”,
cuyo precio es bastante mayor, pero obedecen a una posibilidad más segura.
Según fuentes del Sernac es recomendable esperar la resolución del gobierno, sobre qué
norma digital implementará, para decidir qué comprar.
Un poco de historia
El sistema de televisión analógico utilizado en Chile, denominado NTSC (National Television System Committee) empleado también en Estados Unidos, Japón y
muchos otros países, fue elegido a fines de los 70. Debido a que este estándar era compatible con los antiguos televisores blanco y negro, no fue necesario realizar
una transición muy compleja, ya que quien compraba un televisor color veía en color mientras que el antiguo blanco y negro siguió funcionando normalmente.
Hoy el problema de la digitalización radica que en los actuales televisores con receptores analógicos son incompatibles con esta nueva tecnología, por lo que
los usuarios tendrán necesariamente que comprar televisores digitales o adicionar un decodificador a sus aparatos.
La digitalización de la televisión digital está operando mundialmente con tres estándares: ATSC (Advanced Television Systems Committee) originado en Estados
Unidos, DVB (Digital Video Broadcasting) de la Comunidad Europea e ISDB (Integrated Services Digital Broadcasting) de origen japonés. Entre estos estándares de
televisión digital su operación es incompatible, lo que se traduce en que si queremos que la televisión abierta sea recibida por todos, tanto el canal de televisión
como los televidentes deben contar con el mismo estándar de televisión digital, tanto en la transmisión como en la recepción.

Public Policies for Digital Development
in Chile

The development of adequate public policies
is one of the main tools for encouraging
a country’s digital growth. At least, this
has proven to be the case in those nations – such as Ireland, Israel and India
-- that have succeeded in making the leap
to the digital age. This is with the caveat,
however, that the public policies drawn up
must be adequate; not simply policies that,
ill-formulated or poorly implemented, slow
down progress.
It is worth pondering what elements go into
shaping an adequate public policy. I dare to
proffer four essential elements: originality
and creativity, excellence, competitiveness
and responsibility. Public policies need to
be original and creative if they wish to
encourage participation.
It is not a case of setting aside the tried
and true by dint of its lack of novelty, but
of constantly looking for new ways to
incite a certain conduct and fostering a
greater participation of those involved.
Excellence – because public policies should
focus on those individuals who have failed
to become competitive in terms of the
market, as much as on those groups who
has achieved academic and professional
excellence.
Competitiveness – because the State’s
participation in the market need not have
as goal the elimination of competitive42

ness in the private sector; quite on the
contrary, the State must take advantage
of the market’s energy by stimulating it
accordingly. Finally, responsibility cannot
be neglected given that public policies must
encourage decision-making on the part of
those favored by such policies.
A good example of an adequate public
policy is the “I Choose My PC” campaign
which was recently launched by the government in collaboration with agencies such
as ChileCompra. The campaign involves
presenting 30,000 computers to 7th-grade
students who demonstrate academic excellence. In this way, students are introduced
firsthand into the world of computing, and
thus, into the digital realm. And where lie
the originality, excellence, competitiveness
and responsibility of such a venture?
Unlike in previous campaigns, the government decided not to purchase computer terminals from a single dealer, and
thus restrict student choice. This time
around, the students themselves will be
allowed to select the computer from a series of choices offered by various dealers.
Consequently, not only must the student
make an informed decision, but he or she
must learn to be responsible for his or
her choice. In addition, the dealers are
incited to compete in order to offer the
students the best possible product and thus
indirectly turn students into customers, all
within the budgetary limits approved by
the government.
Moreover, the program allows for the creation of a group of high-achieving individuals
that in the future shall become a catalyst
for development in Chile.
The “I Choose my PC” campaign must become the first in a series of public policies
that, satisfying demands for originality,
excellence, competitiveness and responsibility, be capable of achieving development
imperatives in terms of computers and new
technologies in Chile.

La implementación de adecuadas políticas
públicas es la principal herramienta para
incentivar el desarrollo digital de un país.
Así ha quedado demostrado, al menos, en
aquellas naciones que han logrado efectuar
el cambio a la era digital, como Irlanda,
Israel e India. Eso sí, se trata de establecer “adecuadas” políticas públicas y no
solamente políticas públicas, las que mal
proyectadas o implementadas, terminan
retardando la llegada del desarrollo.
Cabe cuestionarse cuáles son los elementos que hacen que una política pública sea
adecuada. Me atrevo a decir que existen cuatro imprescindibles: originalidad
y creatividad, excelencia, competencia
y responsabilidad. Las políticas públicas
deben ser originales y creativas si quieren
realmente incentivar a las personas en su
participación.
No se trata de dejar de repetir lo bueno
simplemente porque ya no es novedoso,
sino que se trata de una búsqueda constante de la creación de nuevas formas
para incentivar una conducta y generen
una mayor participación de los sectores
involucrados. Excelencia, porque deben
destinarse tanto a quienes no han logrado
ser competitivos en términos de mercado,
como a aquellos sectores que sí logran la
excelencia académica y profesional.
Competencia, porque la participación del
Estado en el mercado no tiene que tener
por objetivo eliminar la competencia del
sector privado, sino que muy por el contrario, el Estado debe aprovechar la energía
del mercado y potenciarla mediante los
estímulos precisos. Finalmente, la responsabilidad no puede estar ausente, porque
las políticas públicas deben incentivar
la toma de decisiones por parte de los
beneficiados.
Un buen ejemplo de política pública adecuada es la campaña “Yo elijo mi PC”, que
fue recientemente lanzada por el gobierno
con la participación de entidades como
ChileCompra. La campaña consiste en

die Autobahn Panamericana bis Panguipulli nehmen.

Wasserfall von Huilo-Huilo
Der Name des Naturschutzgebietes hat seinen Ursprung
im Salto de Huilo-Huilo, ein 50 m hoher beeindruckender,
kristallklarer Wasserfall, der durch eine vulkanische Furche
fliesst und aus einer Höhe von ca. 30m in eine tiefe Stelle
des Fuy Flusses rein strömen.
Puerto Fuy
Puerto Fuy liegt am Ufer des Pirihueico Sees und ist ein

wunderschönes Dorf, von wo aus man mit einer Fähre nach
Pirihueico fahren kann, um den Grenzübergang zwischen
Chile und Argentinien von Hua Hum zu erreichen. Während
der Fährenfahrt kann man die wunderschöne südländische Landschaft geniessen. Kajak, Fliegenfischerei und
Bootfahrten sind einige der vielen Aktivitäten die man in
Puerto Fuy machen kann.
Der Zauber des Waldes

Huilo-Huilo und die UNESCO
Der milde Regenwald entspricht 0,9% der Wälder auf der
ganzen Welt und täglich wird es schwieriger ihn zu schützen. Er erstreckt sich in Chile über die Regionen VII und XI.
Diese Waldsorte ist eine der wichtigsten und leider auch
bedrohtesten Ökoregionen der Erde. Vor kurzem wurde er
von der UNESCO wegen seinem einzigartigem Beitrag zur
weltweiten Biodiversität als Schutzgebiet bezeichnet. Er
zeichnet sich dadurch aus, dass in ihm einer der größten,
weltweit existierenden Schätze hinsichtlich Tierspezien
und Pflanzen lebt: Er beherbergt 35% der existierenden
Baum und Busch Spezien südlichen und milden Wälder im
Südamerika, 23% der Reptilien, 30% der Vögel, 33% der
Säugetiere, 50% der Fische und 76% der Amphibien.
¿Cómo llegar?
La reserva biológica Huilo-Huilo se encuentra ubicada a
860 kilómetros al sur de Santiago. Para acceder a ella,
por tierra, es necesario tomar la carretera Panamericana
hasta Panguipulli.
Vía aérea, las empresas Lan Chile, Sky Airlines y Aerolíneas
del Sur cubren los tramos Santiago-Temuco y Santiago
Valdivia, ida y vuelta. Desde esas ciudades y hasta
Huilo-Huilo se debe prever transporte terrestre.
Salto de Huilo-Huilo
El nombre de la Reserva tiene su origen en el Salto de
Huilo-Huilo, imponente cascada natural de aguas transparentes, de 50 metros de altura, que se desliza por un
surco volcánico y se estrella desde unos treinta metros
hacia un remanso del río Fuy.
Puerto Fuy

paso fronterizo de Hua Hum, límite con Argentina. Durante
la navegación se puede apreciar los hermosos parajes

El Bosque Húmedo Templado representa el 0.9% de

25 ecorregiones más valiosas y amenazadas del planeta,
recientemente declarada por UNESCO como reserva de
la biosfera por su contribución única a la biodiversidad
mundial. Se caracteriza por sustentar una de las mayores
riquezas de especies animales y vegetales del planeta:
alberga más del 35% de los géneros de árboles y arbustos
de los bosques templados del sur de América, 23% de los

Social justice as catalyst of art
“Passion and inspiration have
something in common. Passion
comes about as the result of those
things that strongly move you, that
you wish to give concrete form
in your innermost self; a sublime
desire to see one’s ideals become
reality,” asserts the famed artist.
He discovered a talent for drawing as a
child. Not only was he gifted and did he
stand out among his peers, but through
his childish strokes he discovered a way
to access the world, to express all that he
felt within, all that unsettled or attracted
him.
Mario Toral, one of the country’s most
noted artists, is an enigmatic man of many
contradictions, a dreamer, seemingly simple in his daily life, but complicated in
private. This goes some way to explain why
his work -- which is intrinsically devoted to
depicting the human body through contorted nudes, fragmented or diaphanous -- is
a faithful reflection of those existential
conundrums that make up his life, as a
means to express his own experiences
and feelings.

social justice. However, one depends on
others in order to achieve social change,
given that power is shared by many. And
so, I chose art as the vehicle through which
I can foster justice, criticizing and satirizing
current events, notwithstanding that my
actions be inevitably appreciated by a
limited audience.”

True to his Aquarian nature, Mario Toral,
somewhat removed from local concerns,
has centered his life and work around
a concern about the world at large, on
those world events that affect the course
of history and the destiny of man. And
yet it is also true that passion felt as vital
impulse, taken to an extreme, may end
up enslaving the person. Mario is clear in
this respect. While his passion is conveyed
through art, his struggle involves a personal
effort to subdue the materials needed to
embody it. “It so happens sometimes that
one is simply not using the appropriate
paper when drawing; for example, when
drawing with India ink on soft paper, lint
may collect on the pen and the line one
was tracing loses the sort of delicacy it
would have had on opaline paper; but then
pastels tend to slip on opaline paper. So,
the artist has to invariably struggle with his
unruly materials -- since every medium has
its own peculiarities,” he explains.

Y como buen acuario, Mario Toral, alejado

y su quehacer en reflexionar sobre lo que
pasa fuera, sobre aquellos grandes hechos

impulso vital del ser humano, llevada al extremo, puede resultar esclavizante. En ese
sentido, Mario lo tiene claro. Su pasión se

para desarrollarlo. “Cuando uno hace un
dibujo, a veces, pasa que el papel no es
el adecuado; por ejemplo, si se está dibujando a tinta china sobre un papel blando,
con la pluma sale una pelusilla y la línea
ya no es tan fina como si fuera un papel
opalina; pero si es sobre un opalina y quieres poner un pastel, se resbala. Entonces,
siempre, el artista, tiene una lucha contra
el material, porque cada material tiene su
personalidad”, explica.

“Politics is my great passion, since by
means of it measures can be taken to favor
social justice. However, one depends on
others in order to achieve social change,
given that power is shared by many. And
so, I chose art as the vehicle through which
I can foster justice, criticizing and satirizing
current events, notwithstanding that my
actions be inevitably appreciated by a
limited audience.”
“Mi gran pasión es la política, pues mediante el ejercicio de ella podría tomar
medidas que favorezcan la justicia social.
Sin embargo, para lograrlo dependo de
muchos, porque el poder está repartido en
diversas fuentes. Por ello, escogí el arte como el vehículo por el cual, puedo también
favorecer la justicia, criticando, satirizando
acontecimientos, aunque ello sea sólo
apreciado por un reducido público”.
True to his Aquarian nature, Mario Toral,
somewhat removed from local concerns,
has centered his life and work around
a concern about the world at large, on
those world events that affect the course
of history and the destiny of man. And
yet it is also true that passion felt as vital
impulse, taken to an extreme, may end
up enslaving the person. Mario is clear in
this respect. While his passion is conveyed
through art, his struggle involves a personal
effort to subdue the materials needed to
embody it. “It so happens sometimes that
one is simply not using the appropriate
paper when drawing; for example, when
drawing with India ink on soft paper, lint
may collect on the pen and the line one
was tracing loses the sort of delicacy it
would have had on opaline paper; but then
pastels tend to slip on opaline paper. So,
the artist has to invariably struggle with his
unruly materials -- since every medium has
its own peculiarities,” he explains.

Y como buen acuario, Mario Toral, alejado
de la cosa doméstica, ha centrado su vida
y su quehacer en reflexionar sobre lo que
pasa fuera, sobre aquellos grandes hechos
que afectan al mundo y a la humanidad.
Es cierto, también, que la pasión como
impulso vital del ser humano, llevada al extremo, puede resultar esclavizante. En ese
sentido, Mario lo tiene claro. Su pasión se
expresa a través del arte y su esclavitud se
expresa en la lucha contra los materiales
para desarrollarlo. “Cuando uno hace un
dibujo, a veces, pasa que el papel no es
el adecuado; por ejemplo, si se está dibujando a tinta china sobre un papel blando,
con la pluma sale una pelusilla y la línea
ya no es tan fina como si fuera un papel
opalina; pero si es sobre un opalina y quieres poner un pastel, se resbala. Entonces,
siempre, el artista, tiene una lucha contra
el material, porque cada material tiene su
personalidad”, explica.
Nevertheless, a peculiar phenomenon arises
from this constant struggle, reflects Mario.
“The battle between the artist’s desire and
the inertness of his material leads to a fruitful
but solitary search within an extraordinary
space, wherein the artist comes upon himself
and all that is essential to life.”
Sin embargo, en esa lucha constante, se
produce un fenómeno especial, reflexiona
Mario. “Esa pugna entre el deseo y el material, te conduce a una búsqueda fecunda
de lo mejor; una llena de soledad, una que
te permite encontrarte contigo mismo, ese
maravilloso espacio en el que te reencuentras con lo fundamental”.
Works and Projects
Mario has always been captivated by the
expressive qualities of the human body, by
an ever-changing entity in constant motion
that can be broken down into skin, muscles,
sinews, fragments or transparencies, figures
brimming with mystery and life. He has
used various media and techniques, such
as oil painting, acrylics, collages, engraving,
drawings, watercolors; in addition, he has
portrayed the body through photography.
Through his work he has attempted to “represent the unattainable,” the very limits of
human existence, fate itself. Paint, matter,
the body – all is mere illusion in his work
and metaphor for the human condition that
he defines as “a constant but limited spiritual
striving, for the soul forever remains trapped
in the body.”

Having recently exhibited a series of nude
photographs, Mario Toral is currently losing
sleep over a new project which is making
constant demands on his creativity -- a comic
book that combines eroticism, social critique,
religion, fantasy and fashion.
Tras exponer su serie de fotografías de desnudos, Mario Toral está dedicado a una nueva obra, que le quita el sueño y lo tiene en
constante creación. Se trata de un proyecto
de libro orientado al comics, el que hablará
sobre erotismo, crítica social, religión, fantasía y moda.
“As of late, I’ve become very interested in
comics, a spontaneous medium that allows
me the luxury of relaxing a bit, of being freer
as a creative artist and less tied down by
the constraints imposed by the materials.
Moreover, I get to meld two of my great loves:
drawing and writing.”
With no confirmed publication date in sight,
Mario, ever the passionate artist, passionately labors on to develop his new vision:
art comics.
Mario siempre se ha sentido cautivado por la
expresividad del cuerpo humano, pues para
él es un ente que se mueve y transforma
constantemente, que se desintegra en pieles,
músculos, nervios, fragmentos o transparencias, figuras colmadas de misterios y llenos
de vida. Ha utilizado distintas técnicas como
el óleo, acrílicos, collages, grabados, dibujos,
acuarelas y también ha retratado el cuerpo
a través de la fotografía. Con cada obra ha
intentado "representar lo inalcanzable", los
límites de la existencia humana, el destino.
La pintura, la materia y el cuerpo, todo es
ilusión en su obra y metáfora de la condición
humana que él define como "una aspiración
espiritual constante y limitada, porque el
cuerpo mantiene presa el alma".
“Me he apasionado por el comics, porque
es una técnica más espontánea, que me ha
permitido ser más descuidado, en cuanto a
la libertad del creador y la no esclavitud de
los materiales. Además logro unir dos de mis
grandes amores: el dibujo y las letras”.

trabaja apasionadamente, tal como él es,

New magic from J.K. Rowling
J.K. Rowling’s latest literary
brainchild has just been unveiled and it is drenched with
a plethora of narrative magic.
We’re referring to “The Tales
of Beedle the Bard”, a surprising piece that expands the
mythical tale of Harry Potter
in many ways and which the
creator is using as a farewell
to the saga.
The book contains children’s
stories from magic families,
like Ron Weasley’s, stories
even Harry and Hermione
hadn’t heard of because they
grew up in muggle families.
The collection also includes
a fairy tale entitled “The Tale
of the Three Brothers”, which
tells the legend of the relics of
death, an important element
in the last book of the saga.

Pot” and “Babbitty Rabbitty
and her Cackling Stump”. Five
