n 1999 el Ayuntamiento puso en marcha La Noche es Joven, un
programa hecho por y para jóvenes, que pretende enriquecer las
noches de los fines de semana con un modelo alternativo de ocio,
caracterizado por ser más creativo, plural, saludable, gratuito,
vanguardista y estar protagonizado por jóvenes (las actividades corren a cargo
de asociaciones juveniles, jóvenes artistas, jóvenes monitores...).
n 1999 the City Council launched La Noche es Joven (The Night is
Young), a programme designed by and for young people, to make
weekend evenings more entertaining with an alternative leisure
model, being more creative, plural, healthy, free-of-charge, avantgarde and where young people play the leading role (activities are organised

Ubicada en el antiguo Cine Bonifaz, la Filmoteca Regional de Santander ofrece
películas en versión original con subtítulos en castellano. Las películas se
proyectan los días miércoles, jueves, viernes, sábados y domingos; hay tres
sesiones diarias aunque no se proyecta la misma película en los tres horarios.
Located in the old Bonifaz Cinema, the Santander Regional Film Archive
offers original version films with subtitles in Spanish. Sessions take place on
Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday; there are three daily

puede adentrarse en la prehistoria, conocer como se vivía en Cantabria
en ese periodo recorriendo el MUPAC (Museo de Prehistoria y
Arqueología de Cantabria) pasando a contemplar como era la villa
amurallada de Santi Emeterii (hoy Santander) en el siglo XIII visitando el Centro
de interpretación de la Muralla, conocer la historia y los hitos más importantes
de la ciudad acudiendo a la visita de la Torre de la Catedral donde se ubica
el Centro de Interpretación Historia de la Ciudad de Santander y por último
experimentar lo que vivieron las personas durante la Guerra Civil conociendo
el Refugio Antiaéreo.

La plaza del Ayuntamiento es el
epicentro de la ciudad. La casa
consistorial fue construida en el año
1907 en estilo ecléctico con profusa
decoración interior. En los años 60 se
realizó una ampliación hasta el aspecto
que mantiene actualmente. Consta de
tres pisos y se edificó en dos partes
unidas por una espadaña.

The City Hall square is the epicentre
of the city. The city hall was built in
1907 in an eclectic style with profuse
decoration inside. In the 1960s it was
extended and since then has today’s
appearance. It has three floors and
was built in two parts joined by a
belfry.

En la parte baja de la catedral se
encuentra la Iglesia del Santísimo Cristo,
el templo más antiguo de la ciudad.
Fue construida entre finales del siglo
XII y principios del XIII. Su estilo es
de transición del románico al gótico.
Aquí se encuentran los restos de
los Santos Mártires (San Emeterio
y San Celedonio) soldados romanos
martirizados en el año 298 en
Calahorra.

The lower part of the cathedral
houses the Church of Santísimo
Cristo, the oldest temple in the city.
It was built between the end of the
12th century and beginning of the
13th century, in a transition from
Romanesque to Gothic style.
Here lie the remains of the Holy
Martyrs (Saints Hemeterius and
Celedonius) Roman soldiers
martyred in the year 298 in
Calahorra.

un aspecto exterior austero, sin
embargo, bajo esa apariencia esconde
piezas de valor incalculable que son
dignas de conocer y apreciar en
todo su esplendor. De su interior
destaca un valioso retablo de estilo
churrigueresco, y el sepulcro del
erudito santanderino Marcelino
Menéndez Pelayo.

appearance of the cathedral church, it
houses priceless pieces that are worth
discovering and being appreciated
in all their splendour. Inside you can
admire its valuable Churrigueresquestyle altarpiece, and the tomb of
the Santander scholar Marcelino

Es un edificio de finales del siglo XVI y
comienzos del XVII y se trata del mejor
ejemplo de arquitectura renacentista
de Cantabria. La fachada del siglo XVII,
es la típica jesuítica, con cuerpo central
más alto y dos laterales más estrechos
y bajos.

This building dates from the end of the
16th century and the beginning of the
17th century and it is the best example of
Renaissance architecture in Cantabria. The
17th-century façade is the typical Jesuitstyle with a higher central part and two
narrower and lower ones.

gran escalinata, con columnas jónicas.

monumental portico which is accessed by
a grand staircase, with ionic columns. Of
special interest are a Gothic carving of the
Virgin with Child, (13th century), a box with

Este templo fue inaugurado el 16
de febrero de 1890, levantándose
la torre entre 1901 y 1903. Es de
estilo neogótico. Son característicos
del interior el colorido y las pinturas
(Promesas del Sagrado Corazón, Vía
Crucis, entre otras), obra del pintor
alemán Enrique Imemcamp.

Ayuntamiento (Fernando VII de Goya).

El insigne cántabro donó a la ciudad todo
su legado bibliográfico y el edificio que lo
albergaba con la condición de mantenerlo
unido, componiendo un total de 42.000
volúmenes, que incluyen 23 incunables y
manuscritos de Quevedo, Lope de Vega
y el propio Menéndez Pelayo. Completa
el conjunto la que fuera casa de la familia
Menéndez Pelayo, situada frente a la
fachada posterior de la Biblioteca.

The famous Cantabrian donated to the
city his entire bibliographic legacy and the
building holding it with the condition of
keeping it together. It consists of a total of
42,000 volumes, including 23 Incunabula
and manuscripts by Quevedo, Lope de
Vega and Menéndez Pelayo himself. The
Menéndez Pelayo family home, located
in front of the rear facade of the Library,
completes the ensemble.

Fue construida siguiendo los cánones de la
arquitectura neoherreriana que se instauró
en la urbe tras el incendio de 1941. Obra
de gran sobriedad formal, presenta una
planta cuadrada con cinco entradas y
soportales sostenidos por pilastras, todo
ello en líneas puras y muy simétricas.
It was built in the Neo-Herrian-style
that was established in the city
after the 1941 fire. Work of great
formal sobriety, it has a square floor
plan with five entries and porches
supported by pilasters, all in pure and
very symmetrical lines.

Fue uno de los primeros mercados

de calles cubiertas, quedando

El 10 de Abril de 1904 se abrieron por
primera vez al público las puertas del
Mercado de la Esperanza tras ocho años
de construcción, un edificio de indudable
valor arquitectónico construido a base
de piedra, hierro y vidrio. Actualmente,
el mercado cuenta con unos 80 puestos.

public for the first time on 10th April
1904 after eight years of construction.
It is a building of unquestionable
architectural value built of stone, iron
and glass. The market now has about
80 stalls.

Se encuentran en el centro de la ciudad
de Santander, delante de la bahía,
frente a las montañas y las playas del
Puntal y Somo. El Paseo de Pereda
mantiene un conjunto de edificaciones
del siglo XVIII y todo el XIX que no se
vieron afectadas por el incendio de
1941, por lo que es una de las vías más
antiguas de la ciudad.

son impresionantes.
