Second Sunday of Advent
There is a reason that John the Baptist appears in our Gospel reading for
this Second Sunday in Advent calling out, “Repent, for the kingdom of
heaven is at hand.” We might conclude, and not entirely in error, that the
reference point is the imminent birth of Christ, the ultimate conclusion
of Advent.
However, the meaning of this is much deeper and broader, something
which needs to strike a chord in our hearts and in our lives of stewardship. Often we make reference to the fact that stewardship requires
conversion. There are actually two accepted translations of μετανοέω/
metanoeō, the original Greek word construed as “repent” which begins
John the Baptist’s admonition. One is “repent” which is always good
advice to us.
The other is “change.” Last week Jesus told us to wake up. This week
John the Baptist is telling us to change. Advent is the time for us to come
alive, but it is not just an occasion for action. It should also motivate us to
alter the way we approach living — to seek ways to live out stewardship in
service, in love, and in gratitude.
But, yes, it is a time to be penitent as well. It is a time to repent in the
original sense of that word. St. John Chrysostom wrote eloquently on how
to repent. He gave us five paths (terms) to lead us to repent: 1. Confession; 2. Forgiveness; 3. Prayer; 4. Almsgiving; 5. Humility. That is good
advice for Advent.

It is that time of year again where certain positions on the Parish Finance
Council will open as members complete their three year terms. The
Finance Council of the parish is the consultative group which assists the
pastor and the Pastoral Council in carrying out the material administration of the parish. It has the obligation of planning, and supervising the
financial affairs and physical properties of the parish. The Finance Council is concerned with parish resources, fundraising, the budget, church
support, and the effective utilization and maintenance of the parish plant.
In addition to its consultative role, the Bishop requires the approval of a
Parish Finance Council for construction and major expenditures.

is a group of 5-7 couples that meet monthly to share
their news, a potluck meal, prayer, and study a topic
with a family/marriage/spiritual focus. The couples
form a unit that is supportive and caring, where ideas
are exchanged and thoughts are challenged. As part of
an international movement recognized by the Pope, we
strive to live the vocation of marriage in a world that
often does not support it. There are couples of all ages

the Extraordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops:
Preparatory Document: PASTORAL CHALLENGES TO THE
FAMILY IN THE CONTEXT OF EVANGELIZATION.
According to the Vatican the questionnaire is an attempt to help
the Church find solutions to difficult pastoral situations utilizing
the existing doctrines of the faith. Results from the survey will be
incorporated into a working document that will be utilized in the
Synod, or meeting of bishops, that will take place in 2015. The
topic of the gathering is on the theme of pastoral challenges of the
family in the context of evangelization.
While not a survey of public opinion it is the first time that a pope
has asked bishops to widely share a survey with parish priests and
for them to seek the views of their parishioners in preparation for
such a meeting. The questions, arranged in 9 topic areas, touch
on themes such as how Catholic teaching on the value of the family has been received and understood, marriage according to natural law, local efforts to support and promote family life as well as
how the Church is able to minister and care for people in irregular
marriage situations including the religious education of the children of these marriages. The survey also explores the openness of
married couples to life and the Sacraments of the Church.
The surveys must be returned to the diocese by December 15
so that the results can be compiled and returned to the Vatican by
the end of the year.
Please visit:
www.cathdal.org/synodsurvey
to participate in the survey.

Es cambiar algo en nuestra vida
familiar: mayor afecto y muestras

Documento preparatorio: LOS DESAFÍO PASTORALES SOBRE LA
