Inaugurado en 1991, Los Arqueros es un recorrido retador de 18 hoyos
par 71 diseñado por el español Severiano Ballesteros. Considerado como
uno de los mejores jugadores del mundo, ‘Seve’ (apócope por el que es
reconocido) ha puesto sus conocimientos y su prestigiosa firma en la
creación de unos 30 campos de golf en todo el mundo.

La filosofía que marcó el diseño de Los Arqueros fue la de construir un
campo que, ajustado fielmente a los contornos del terreno, estuviera en
armonía con el entorno natural. Seve desarrolló esta filosofía al máximo
en el diseño de los recorridos de ida y vuelta, dotando a cada uno de
ellos de personalidad propia. El resultado: un recorrido que supone un
reto para el jugador experimentado y una verdadera prueba para aquellos
que son nuevos en el juego.
El recorrido obliga a jugar con precisión, especialmente, en algunas
salidas ajustadas donde se puede sacrificar la distancia del drive
optando por salir con hierros o maderas más cortas que aseguren la bola
en el “fairway”.
El diseño y el planteamiento de Los Arqueros marcan una notable
diferencia con respecto a los restantes campos de la Costa del Sol. La
dirección de Los Arqueros (propiedad de la empresa Taylor Wimpey de
España S.A.) nunca escatimó esfuerzos para ir mejorando su recorrido
que, bajo supervisión de los técnicos de S. Ballesteros (Trayectory), se
han llevado a cabo, realizándose numerosas mejorías. Estos esfuerzos
vieron su recompensa a finales del 2003, al lograr la implantación del
Sistema de Gestion Medioambiental, I.S.O. 14001. Los Arqueros se ha
convertido, de este modo, en el 1er campo de golf en la Costa del Sol el 2º en Andalucia y el 4º en toda España- en obtener esta Certificación
Oficial. Este logro no es más que el lógico resultado de la política
general de Taylor Wimpey por la que se determina implantar un Sistema
de Gestión Medioambiental respetuoso con el medioambiente y
conforme a todas las normativas vigentes de legislación
medioambiental. Además de esta certificación, cuenta con dos más:
Sistema de Calidad de Golf conforme a la norma UNE 188.001; y un
Sistema de Seguridad y Salud conforme a la norma OHSAS 18.001. Los
Arqueros Golf es el único campo de golf de España con estas tres
certificaciones sometidas anualmente a auditoria externa por empresas
certificadoras acreditadas (Lloyd`s Register). El concepto de Sistema de
Gestión Medioambiental (SGMA) surgió por primera vez en Holanda en
1985 y, actualmente, está firmemente establecido en todo el mundo. No
obstante, sigue tratándose de una normativa internacional de aplicación
voluntaria por la que se previenen y subsanan problemas ambientales,
sean reales o potenciales.
Tras completar los 18 hoyos del recorrido, propiamente dicho, las vistas
del “hoyo 19” de Los Arqueros son motivadoras. Desde su terraza
panorámica, construída sobre una ladera, se divisan tanto la salida del
hoyo 1 como el green del hoyo 18, a la vez que se puede reanimar el
espíritu con las espectaculares vistas que, en una parábola azul,
alcanzan el horizonte hasta perderse en el Mediterráneo. Además del bar
y el restaurante, encontramos allí el pro-shop, el gimnasio y la sauna,
además de pistas de squash, tenis y padel, el campo de prácticas, el
putting y el chipping green. La Casa Club es lugar de encuentro para
visitantes y residentes de todas las nacionalidades que vienen tanto
para jugar al golf como para disfrutar del particular estilo de vida al aire
libre caracterizado por el goce del sol y el campo, compartiendo, quizás,
una jarra de cerveza y un plato de paella en buena compañía.
CONSEJOS DEL PRO
HOYO 1, par 4 (347m): hoyo estrecho con hazard a la derecha y fuera de
límites a la izquierda. Green en dos alturas y fácil.
Consejo: use un hierro largo o híbrido y verá el hoyo de otra forma.
HOYO 2, par 3 (156m): espectacular hoyo por sus bunkers estilo links.
Consejo: apóyese en la parte izquierda del green.
HOYO 3, par 4 (361m): magnífico hoyo con un gran lago y el green en
alto.
Consejo: coloque su drive en la parte derecha de la calle para evitar
problemas. Use un palo más del que piense para el segundo golpe.
HOYO 4, par 4 (325m): corto y fácil dog-leg, auque eso sí, su green es
pequeño y protegido por un algarrobo. Fuera de límites a lo largo de la
parte izquierda.
Consejo: salga con madera 3 y apóyese a la derecha en la salida.
HOYO 5, par 3 (151m): muy parecido al hoyo 2 pero hacia arriba,
protegido por dos bunkers difíciles. Green en dos plataformas.
Consejo: evite el bunker de la izquierda.
HOYO 6, par 5 (519m): aquí empieza nuestro particular “AMEN CORNER”.
Este es un hoyo muy largo, estrecho además de tener hazard a ambos
lados de la calle y al fondo del green. Su green también es difícil porque
tiene forma de huevo.
Consejo: saque el máximo rendimiento a su driver y madera tres.
HOYO 7, par 4 (305m): segundo hoyo del “AMEN CORNER”. La calle no
tiene más de treinta metros de anchura con hazards a ambos lados de la
calle y su green es estrecho y bien protegido.
Consejo: al no ser un hoyo largo, recomiendo el uso de un hierro 5 ó 6
desde la salida.
HOYO 8, par 5 (480m): de los tres hoyos es el más fácil sin dejar de
tener los dos primeros golpes cierta dificultad. Hazard en la parte
derecha de la calle. Si intenta jugar el segundo golpe sobre el agua
lateral, tenga cuidado con el fuera de límites por la parte dcha.
Consejo: para el handicap alto salida con madera tres y segundo golpe
corto antes del arroyo.
HOYO 9, par 4 (283m): el hoyo más fácil de este recorrido, aunque su
green tiene tres plataformas con un gran desnivel. Fuera de límites por la
izquierda y hazard a la derecha.
Consejo: salga con madera 3 y use un palo más del que piense para el
segundo golpe.
HOYO 10, par 4 (330m): hoyo con forma de guitarra, hazard a la
izquierda y fuera de límites a la derecha de la salida. Su green es en dos
plataformas y complicado.
Consejo: asegure la salida con un hierro o híbrido.
HOYO 11, par 3 (145m): hoyo no complicado aunque con dificultad en
su green. Fuera de límites a la derecha.
Consejo: use uno o dos palos más de lo que piensa en la salida y mire
bien las caídas.
HOYO 12, par 4 (319m): bonito hoyo por sus vistas y entorno. Hazards
a la izquierda, derecha y fondo del green. Fuera de límites a la derecha.
Consejo: salga con madera 3 y procure no pasarse del green.
HOYO 13, par 5 (458m): magníficas vistas al “MARE NOSTRUM”. Los días
claros se ve África y la cordillera Atlas con nitidez. Hazard a la derecha e
izquierda.
Consejo: saque el máximo rendimiento a su driver y apoye su segundo
golpe a los bunkers de la izquierda. Hoyo difícil para alcanzar el green en
dos golpes. Si es handicap bajo arriesgue y juegue a green de dos.
HOYO 14, par 4 (289m): hoyo corto y fácil donde podrá hacer birdie
cualquier jugador. Hazard a la derecha.
Consejo: puede usar el driver sin miedo pero siempre apoyándose bastante
a la izquierda.
HOYO 15, par 4 (376m): otro gran hoyo de golf, ligero dogleg a la
izquierda con un green complicado. Fuera de límites por la parte derecha
y trasera del green.
Consejo: use el driver sin contemplación e intente entrar en el green por la
parte derecha.
HOYO 16, par 3 (150m): bonito hoyo rodeado por agua y bunkers. Fuera
de límites por la parte derecha y fondo del green.
Consejo: si es handicap alto o medio debe buscar la parte derecha del
green.
HOYO 17, par 4 (350m): hoyo ancho desde su salida y fuera de límite
por la derecha. Segundo golpe en subida y green en dos plataformas.
Consejo: apoye su drive a la izquierda y pegue un palo más del que piense
para el segundo golpe.
HOYO 18, par 4 (335m): ancho y corto par cuatro para terminar, cabe
destacar su green, el más grande del campo con dos niveles. Fuera de
límites a la derecha de la calle.
Consejo: juegue su drive a la izquierda para que el segundo golpe sea más
cómodo por estar en subida.

he sleek green fairways of Los Arqueros Golf & Country Club are
cradled in the rugged Sierras of Ronda. This spectacular mountain
setting where the eagle and vulture soar, provide players with a bird’seye- view across the Mediterranean and beyond Africa on a clear day. All
this beauty is concentrated in Marbella’s famous Golf Valley and just 10
minutes from Puerto Banús, haunt of millionaires, celebrities and the
yacht set.
Los Arqueros Golf, a challenging 18 hole, par 71, inaugurated in 1991,
has been designed by a man who is not only one of the world’s top
professional golfers, but also a native of the country, Spain’s Severiano
Ballesteros. He has shared his knowledge and put his name into the
creation of almost 30 golf courses throughout the world.
The design thinking behind Los Arqueros Golf was to lay out a course
which closely followed the contours of the land and was in harmony with
the natural setting. It is an idea, which Seve exploited to the maximum
when designing the front and back nine holes, each with its own distinct
personality. The result is a course which presents a challenge for the
experienced golfer and is a real test of skills for beginners.
The course demands accurate play, especially on some of the tighter
fairways where even big hitters may be advised to play a shorter iron or
wood off the tee for greater precision.
Los Arqueros Golf (owned by Taylor Wimpey de España S.A.U.) is unique
and its design is very different from the majority of courses on the Costa
del Sol.
However Los Arqueros’ directors do not believe in standing still and in
order to retain its excellent reputation, improvements to the course are
always ongoing under the guidance of technical experts at the Seve
Ballesteros organisation. These efforts were rewarded when the club was
granted the ISO 14001 Environmental Management System certificate at
the end of 2003. This official recognition has made Los Arqueros Golf
the first golf course on the Costa del Sol, the second in Andalusia and
the fourth in all of Spain to obtain the ISO 14001. This achievement is
hardly surprising given Taylor Wimpey’s overall policy of incorporating a
general environmental management system in order to respect nature and
comply with all standing regulations. Apart from this certificate, the
Course counts with two more Management Systems: Golf Quality in
accordance with the norm UNE 188.001; and Security & Health in
accordance with the norm OHSAS 18.001. Los Arqueros Golf is the only
golf course in Spain that counts with these three Management Systems
yearly officially audited (Lloyd`s Register). The idea of an Environmental
Management System (SGMA) first emerged in The Netherlands in 1985,
and is currently firmly observed all over the world. However its
application is still voluntary to prevent and to remedy real and potential
environmental problems.
After the challenge of the course, the “nineteenth hole” at Los Arqueros
is a welcome sight. The panoramic terrace is built into the hillside
overlooking the first tee and the 18th green, and it is revitalising merely
to have a drink in the breathtaking views to the horizon, which describe
a perfect blue parabola where the sky meets the Mediterranean. As well
as a bar and restaurant, there is a pro shop, gymnasium and sauna,
squash, tennis and paddle tennis courts, putting and chipping greens, as
well as a driving range. The club house is a meeting place for visiting
golfers and country club residents of all nationalities who come not only
to play golf but also to savour that special outdoor lifestyle, which is all
about enjoying the sunshine and the country air over a chilled beer and
a dish of paella perhaps, in congenial company.
PRO TIPS
HOLE 1, par 4 (347m): Narrow hole with a hazard to the right and an
out-of-bounds to the left, difficult split-level green.
Tip: use a long iron or a hybrid club and you will see a different hole.
HOLE 2, par 3 (156m): Spectacular hole thanks to its links-style
bunkers.
Tip: aim for the left side of the green.
HOLE 3, par 4 (361m): Magnificent hole with a large lake and a high
green.
Tip: place your drive to the right of the fairway to avoid difficulties, shot
to green plays longer.
HOLE 4, par 4 (325m): Short and simple dog-leg, although the green is
small and protected by a carob tree. Out of bounds left side of the
fairway.
Tip: tee off with a 3-wood down the right-hand side of the fairway.
HOLE 5, par 3 (151m): Similar to hole 2 but uphill, protected by two
tricky bunkers. Split-level green.
Tip: avoid the bunker on the left-hand side.
HOLE 6, par 5 (519m): This is where our own particular Amen Corner
begins. It is a very long, narrow hole with a hazard on both sides of the
fairway and back of green. Tricky egg-shaped green.
Tip: make the most of your driver and 3-wood.
HOLE 7, par 4 (305m): Second hole of our Amen Corner. The fairway is
no more than thirty metres wide, hazards both sides of fairway and leads
to a narrow, well-protected green.
Tip: as this is not a long hole, tee off with a 5-iron or 6-iron.
HOLE 8, par 5 (480m): This is the easiest of the three holes, although
the first two shots are quite tricky. Hazard right to the fairway. If playing
second shot over water hazard beware of out of bounds on the right.
Tip: high handicaps should tee off with a 3-wood, followed by a short
second shot in front of the stream.
HOLE 9, par 4 (283m): The easiest hole on this side of the course,
although the green has three distinct levels, out of bounds left and
hazard right.
Tip: tee off with a 3-wood, second shot plays longer.

and an out-of-bounds to the right of the tee. Complicated, split-level
green.

handicap, you can risk it and go for the green in two.
HOLE 14, par 4 (289m): Short, easy hole that can be birdied by the
average golfer. Hazard to the right.
Tip: you can use your driver but aim to the left-hand side.
