Stop Smoking for better health Smoking tobacco is the leading “avoidable” cause of cancer. It makes up 30% of cancer deaths in the United States. Smoking is a major health risk. 1. Lung Cancer risk goes up 50 to 100% for each cigarette you smoke per day. 2. Heart disease risks goes up 100% for each pack of cigarettes you smoke per day. 3. Each cigarette costs the smoker five to twenty minutes of life. 4. Smokers spend 27% more time in the hospital. They also spend twice as much time in Intensive Care Units than nonsmokers. 5. A smoker has twice the risk of dying before the age of 65 as a non-smoker. 6. Smoking causes over 400,000 pre-mature deaths in the US per year. Non smokers who are exposed to second hand smoke are also at risk. They are at risk for lung cancer, heart disease, respiratory infections and death. If you stop smoking you can lower all these risks of illness. People who quit lowered the risk of lung cancer by 50% after ten years. They also cut the risk of throat cancer in half within 5 years. The earlier you quit smoking the greater the health benefits. Talk to your doctor about drugs that can help you quit smoking. Go online to www.ashline.org or call 1-800-556-6222 for counseling and support groups. Urgent Care Centers vs. ER What Can the Urgent Care Center Do for Me? Feeling sick - or do you have a child who is feeling sick and your doctor's office cannot fit you in for another week? Primary-care physicians are not the only game in town and urgent care centers can save you time in getting care you need for yourself or your family. When you can’t see your doctor right away, an urgent care center is a good medical alternative to an emergency room. Why Use the Urgent Care Centers? 1. Your wait time will probably be shorter than in an ER. 2. Urgent care centers are often open evenings and weekends – hours when your doctor usually is not available. 3. You don’t need an appointment. 4. There are more usually more urgent care centers than ERs in most cities. 5. An urgent care center may be closer to your home than an ER. The choice is yours. But remember: for treatment of a minor illness or injury, an urgent care center will save you time and may be a lot more convenient. To find an urgent care center near you, visit www.care1st.com.
