The period of purification and enlightenment begins after the Rite of Election, which was celebrated at the cathedral with Bishop Pates last Sunday. The tone of this period of preparation of RCIA shifts to more of a retreat. It is a period of prayerful recollection, “consisting more in interior reflection than in catechetical instruction.” (RCIA, n. 139). “If the rite intended the previous periods of formation to form disciples into the paschal mystery, this period‟s intention is to intensify desire by helping the elect to purify their minds and hearts and also to enlighten them with a deeper knowledge of Christ.” (The RCIA: Transforming the Church, p. 166) Thus, the elect join with the parish community in beginning our Lenten retreat. This time of reflection and penance helps the elect to step out of the routine of life to prepare better for the life-changing commitment they will make at the Easter Vigil. “The elect have made an important choice in their lives: to follow the Lord as disciples in the company of the Christian community.” In fact, the origins of the liturgical season of Lent go back to the early Church‟s initiatory practice. Lent was the time of final, prayerful preparation for those whom the Church would baptize, confirm and celebrate eucharist at the great Vigil of Easter. Later, the focus of Lent shifted from preparation for initiation to recommitment or reconciliation. The restoration of RCIA has renewed the initiation focus for this beautiful season of Lent. (The RCIA: Transforming the Church, p. 166-7) Please continue to hold our elect and candidates in prayer as they journey toward the Easter sacraments. If you would like to know more about becoming Catholic, please contact Casey Conner at [email protected] or 515-225-6414 ext. 309. SACRED HEART CHURCH · WEST DES MOINES, IA · PAGE 4 FOR ALL PARISHIONERS WHAT YOU WILL SEE IN THE SANCTUARY Pieces that will form a quilt which will be on display on Palm Sunday and Holy Thursday, will begin to appear in the front of the ambo. The five countries that we are focusing on during our CRS Rice Bowl Project will be depicted in these quilt squares. Words from our Director of Art & Environment, Pam Douglas: “The quilt includes two symbols representing two ways of remembering the poor. I chose the rice bowl symbol from the CRS box to represent our hopes for everyone in their different situations to receive their portion and cup. The next symbol used is the biblical block entitled „Children of Israel‟ symbolizing God‟s people while in exile and slavery. This symbol fit for me because the people CRS are trying to help are struggling with the many ways they are suffering or lacking in what they need. The work CRS does is trying to help them break out of their suffering and to help them find better ways to live. It is through reading the Psalms that we are reminded that through patience and trust in God we will see this happen. I found a prayer that resonated with me and my understanding of what CRS hopes to do for the poor: Christ, who showed great compassion to the poor, Give us compassion toward those in poverty. Your wish is for all of your children to live with dignity, with adequate food, shelter, health care and education. Help us to take up your work as a community of faith and guide us as we seek just solutions to the poverty in our midst. Amen.” SACRED HEART BLOOD DRIVE Be Christ-like and give the “Gift of Life” by donating blood. Not only is Lent a time of abstinence, but also a time of giving to those in need. SACERDOTES SAGRADO CORAZON PADRE CHRISTOPHER HARTSHORN, PARROCO [email protected] 225-6414, ext. 310 PADRE LUIS MEJIA, VICARIO PARROQUIAL [email protected] 225-6414, ext.
