Job’s Garden News
Noticias de los Jardines de Job
How to Start Your Fall Garden This Summer
1. Know the first frost date for your zone. For Phoenix it’s zone 8
and the estimated first frost date is November 18, 2009. Timing is
everything in gardening and fall gardening success hinges on
anticipating the first frost.
2. Decide what you want to grow and buy seeds or plants.
3. Calculate expected harvest dates before planting any seeds or
plants to ensure weather conditions will allow for proper growth
and optimal yields.
2. Decide qué quiere crecer y compre semillas o plantas.
4. Create a fall garden time line and schedule by counting back
14, 12, 10, 8 and 6 weeks from the first frost date for your area
and marking the dates on a calendar.
5. Make sure you have additional potting soil, seeds, and
fertilizer 14 weeks before the first frost. Plant bean, cucumber,
summer squash lettuce, and herbs directly into the dirt to take
advantage of what’s left of the summer season.
Plante ejotes, pepinos, calabazas, lechugas y hierbas
6. 12 weeks before the first frost this is also the time to plant cabbage, broccoli and cauliflower.
7. Direct sow carrots, beets, radishes, along with another batch of
lettuce seeds during week 10.
8. Plant spinach, cabbage, and more lettuce 8 weeks before the
first frost.
9. Seize the last chance to plant lettuce and spinach 6 weeks
before the first frost. At this point, be sure to plant very cold
tolerant vegetables such as kale and cabbage.
10. Gather blankets and tarps that will be used to protect the fall
garden (lettuce in particular) from a killing frost and keep them
handy 4 weeks before the first frost date.
11. Watch the weather reports for night temperatures. Protect
plants as needed from frost.
12. Plant garlic, onions and shallots on the first frost date or when
the first frost actually occurs for a summer harvest.
13. Harvest the garden crop throughout this time period. Lettuce
is typically ready for harvest 50 to 60 days after planting and
sequential planting will ensure you have a crop ready to pick
tiempo.
