THE BIOLOGICAL BLOG The Burmeister culo tapado (ass covered) Huascar Bustillos Cayoja Biologist- Protected Areas- Research / email:[email protected] Among the fauna of Santa Cruz de la Sierra have a unique member of the family of the armadillos (Dasypodidae) I am referring to the "ass covered" also called (coseveru, tapa frasco, pichiciego, yeta, tatujeikurajoyava) all these names refer to its peculiar appearance resembling a small "pink mole". The scientific name of this species is Calyptophractus retusus this specie prefers dry places as the “chaco” and pampas sandy areas surrounding the city of rings, has a size of 17 cm, his hair is long a moderately stiff, whitish color distributed on the sides of the body, the carapace is pale pink and flexible ,which suggests that “ass covered” has a camouflage for xeric environments , avoiding potential predators such as owls and a sort of carnivores (foxes and felids), its tail seems a small spatula and serves as a "fifth" leg; since holding the weight of the body at the time of excavation either to flee or seek food. This species is insectivorous and can be also feed on roots of plants and fruits. Something very important to mention is that Calyptophractus retusus was discovered in 1859 by Herman Burmeister (naturalist of German origin), in what is known now as the city of Santa Cruz, has been since 153 years and very few specimens have been collected for studies on their biology. The few sightings due to its habits underground, followed by the extreme difficulty of maintenance in captivity, preclude the description of its natural history, so it is known very little about their reproductive cycle, life spam and food preferences. The ass covered is a rather shy and elusive to less noise, begins digging disappearing into the sand within a few seconds (which explains its little observation in the field); This species is not hunted for food purposes because its small size is not competition against a corechi (Tolypeutes matacus) or a black tatu (Dasypus novencinctus) being their main problem the disturbance and destruction of its habitat for example: ChacoIsoso the threat of more notorious is the expansion of the agricultural frontier and ranching where made by the introduction of cows and goats on the other hand the populations present in the Kaa-Iya NP-IMNA in the Gran Chaco, they enjoy some protection of this protected area, but what is worrying is the situation of populations residing in the pampas near of Santa Cruz city; being directly threatened by the progressive expansion of the city towards the pampas (urubo, grigotá, viru viru) and especially for the extraction of sand ( construction bussines) that step by step they are altering habitat. Another threat that has the “ass covered” is the folklore, the chaco people have the idea that it is "bad omen" that it is an emissary of death to someone in the community, and that to prevent this from happening, they have to kill immediately, this practice may be due to that “ass covered” when its catch it emits a plaintive sound reminiscent of a baby crying. Due to everything described above is necessary to take measures for the protection and conservation and above all investigations that provide data on the ecology of this rare specie that we are still in the vicinity of our city.
