Dear Parents: Thank you to all who attended Parent – Teacher conferences in November. Your involvement as parents and family members in your Tomcats’ education is vital as they progress through their high school years! Thank you to our partners at North Central College for sponsoring a college fair at the November Parent Teacher Conferences, which provided an opportunity for parents to speak with representatives from several colleges and universities. I encourage all parents to continue to communicate with their son or daughter’s teachers throughout the school year to keep abreast of their academic progress. As we move towards the end of the first semester, we continue to focus on improving student achievement in reading. Once a month, we set aside time for students to read independently during their second period classes. We strongly encourage all of our students to read for at least 20 minutes per day outside of school. All students are required to read a minimum of one book per semester in addition to homework or other reading assignments required in each subject area. As parents, we ask that you work with us to ensure that your son or daughter to meets this daily goal. Our English Department teachers have generated a list of their choices of the top 100 books for students to read. We have included the top 25 titles in this newsletter. I encourage parents to read along with their sons and daughters as a way to help them appreciate and enjoy reading as an outside activity. Congratulations to the students who performed in the fall EAHS drama production of The Wiz! The actors, band, tech crew and stage design and construction team did a fabulous job creating a magical evening for all who attended! Have a wonderful holiday season! PLCs bring teachers together to discuss, plan, and focus on students. Over the last few years, East Aurora High School developed and implemented curriculum across all subject areas areas. This experience increased the rigor of what our students learn. We also created common 4½ week assessments in all subject areas. These assessments provide teachers and administrators data to identify strengths and weaknesses of the students’ performance. The focus of the PLCs this year will be focusing on increasing student achievement and performance. The PLCs meet monthly to discuss and brainstorm different ways to help students be more successful. In addition to the PLC meetings, East Aurora school district has incorporated two Late Start Days. On February 15th, 2012 and April 18th, 2012, the students will start at 9:45 am. This will give teachers additional time to collaborate and develop strategies for increasing student success.
