July 27, 2014 Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Financial Information Sunday collection: (July 20, 2014) Utilities collection: (July 20, 2014) $8,523.00 $1,683.00 God’s Plan for Giving Tithing is God’s plan to support His Church. Full tithing means 10% of income to God. We ask half of this, or 5% for your Parish Church. Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Imagine being asked by God what we want and He promising to give it to us. What would we ask for? More money; a better job; a vacation house; fame? Solomon is asked that question by God today. His father, King David has just died and he has been declared king, probably only a teenager himself. He felt he was too young. So what is his request from God? An understanding heart to judge God's people and distinguish right from wrong. Solomon might have only been a teenager and too young in the eyes of the world but in God's eyes he was ready to do God's work and live for His kingdom. No matter our age, occupation or status in life, we, who have been baptized are also called to do God's work and live in this world in a way that we will reach God's kingdom. Jesus tells us today why we should want to reach His kingdom. Jesus uses various images to describe the Kingdom of God. He said it is like a treasure buried in a field where someone gives all he has to buy the field. It is like the pearl of great price which a merchant seeks to sell all he has to buy the one pearl. It is also like a net which gathers all, good and bad, until they can be separated. The scriptures challenge us today to examine for ourselves what are we willing to give up or sacrifice to reach the kingdom of God. We are called by God to love him and love each other with all we have. Are we willing to give up our petty angers or jealousies? Are we willing to share what we have with who have less than us? Are we willing to be kind and patient with family and neighbors? Like he did Solomon, God asks us what we want - our only answer should be - to be in His kingdom! Thank you IHM Sisters! As I write this article I am just returning to Saint William from Camilla Hall where I concelebrated Sr. Irene Kervick’s funeral Mass along with Msgr. Mortimer, Fr. John Nordeman, Fr. Brian Frain, S.J., and Fr. Bill Dean the chaplain of Camilla Hall. Sister Irene taught both Fr. John Nordeman and myself in Eighth Grade here at Saint William. (In those days she was Sr. Brian Maureen). She taught with Fr. Frain at Saint William before he was a priest and Msgr. Mortimier was her pastor during her time at Saint William. Our parish was very well represented. When I arrived at Camilla, I was greeted by my First Grade teacher, Sr. Paul Catherine. After our initial hello she took me to the viewing room so I could pay my respects to Sr. Irene and her family. As I stood beside the casket that held my Eighth Grade teacher, my First Grade teacher stood at my side. It was in that moment that I became very aware of the great influence the IHM Sisters have had on my Faith development as well as my human development through the years. I feel blessed that I am a product of an IHM education. Now I want to thank the IHM Sisters who are leaving Saint William this year. I am sure, like they did for me, they have touched the lives of many that they taught as either children or adults. Last week we said goodbye to Sister Rachel Torrieri Because Fr. Gus is not here this weekend. Today we say farewell and God bless to Sister Jamie Silvano, Sister Mary Regina Schuyler, Sister Maryan Chappetto, Sister Arleen McCaan and Sister Mary Anne Hoesle. Each of these faithful servants have left their mark on our parish and we are very, very grateful. May God continue to bless these women as they leave us and continue to serve Him in their new ministries. Even in retirement the IHMs continue to minister to the Church through their constant prayer. They are true FAITHFUL WITNESSES! ATTENTION DUE TO FLOOR RENOVATIONS THERE WILL BE NO BINGO ON TUESDAY, JULY 29TH BINGO WILL RESUME TUESDAY, AUGUST 5th, 2014 We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused. Saint William Students Excel at BISHOP MCDEVITT HIGH SCHOOL Our parish recently received notification of the performance of our high school students on the End of Year Report. We ar e par ticular ly pr oud of those who demonstrated academic excellence. The following students ranked in the top ten of their respective classes: Michael J. Mahoney ‘14 was #7; Daniel Nguyen ‘14 was #1; Daniela Nguyen “16 was #1; and Kiara S. DeVore ‘17 was #6. Students who achieved first honors include: Joseph Edinger ‘14; Jonathan Korolyk ‘14; Stephen Korolyk ‘14; Michael J. Mahoney ‘14; Daniel Nguyen ‘14; Daniela Nguyen ‘ 16; and Kiara S. DeVore ‘17. News from the Office of Religious Education We asked all our parishioners men/women alike to think, search your hearts, and respond to the invitation of “becoming a Catechist” for the coming year 2014-2015. Sr. Maryan has been on retreat the past two weeks giving services to her community at Villa Maria House of Studies, she has now returned and would like to hear from you. Please call the office at 215.745.0921. This ministry of giving your time, talent and love of God to little ones is most rewarding. Thank you.
