SINOPSIS

SYNOPSIS
He fought twice in Vietnam for the US Army Special Forces, green-beret and paramedic. Over twenty
diplomas hanged from his bedroom walls. When he was fourteen, his father hanged himself from a
mango tree after announcing he was going to “pay a visit to the dead.” He lived alone with his mother, a
72 year-old woman, whom he detested and sometimes battered due to monetary arguments. He gave
English lessons to teenagers, using the novel Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde as the guiding text. Never drank
nor smoked. He was extremely good at handling and using firearms. He was obsessed with personal
hygiene, to the point of using toilet paper instead of towels to drain his body after showering. He never
shook hands, afraid of getting contaminated. He was educated, intelligent, reserved, and discreet. He
didn’t vote on Election Day. He wore his hair short and liked to have his shoes polished every day.
On a Thursday afternoon, he killed and burned his mother and then proceeded to kill other 28 people
in a fancy Italian restaurant in Bogotá, Colombia. This is the description of Campo Elias Delgado, a 52
year old man, who committed suicide at 8:45 pm on December 4, 1986, surrounded by the bodies of his
victims.
Based on the award-winning novel by Colombian author Mario Mendoza, SATANAS, is set in
present day Colombia and blends fiction and reality to tell the harsh stories of two characters that cross
Campo Elias's path during his day of wrath. These characters are Paola, and Ernesto.
Paola, a hard-working, beautiful 20 year-old girl, with no family, enrolls in a plan to steal from rich
executives using a drug known as scopolamine. One day, after performing a stunt, she gets raped by a
taxi driver and his accomplice. Blinded by hate, she decides to get revenge, and ends up killing her
agressors. Afterwards she decides to leave aside her criminal endeavors and become an honest citizen.
She visits Father Ernesto, the man who helped her in times of need. After confession they attend a fancy
restaurant to celebrate a new beginning. Here is where Paola meets Campo Elias face to face.
Ernesto is a 50 year-old priest torn between his carnal desire towards Irene, the woman who helps him
at church, and his spiritual love towards God. One afternoon he receives the chilling confession of a
woman whom Ernesto is unable to help and who ends up murdering her children. After receiving a
second confession of a desperate man named Campo Elias, he looses his faith in God and becomes
irritable towards society. He decides to leave his vocation aside and asks Irene to marry him. That same
day Ernesto receives a surprise visit from Paola, the girl he once raised and saved from the streets. All
three attend a fancy Italian restaurant to celebrate their new beginnings. Waiting for them is Campo Elias,
about to begin his descent into hell.
