Preterite of –IR Stem-Changing Verbs (SOLE verbs)

depending on the type of verb (-AR/-ER/-IR). _______________ will NOT stem-change at
all in the preterite. However, ______________ will have a spelling change in the 3rd
person forms (____________________________________).
The stem-change will be different from the present tense. Stem-changes will only be
_________ and __________, regardless of their stem-change in the present tense. There
are not any e-ie or o-ue stem-changers in the preterite tense.
Ejemplos:
Pedir (i,i):
Mentir (ie, i):
Dormir (ue, u):
*These verbs are called “________________________” because they only stem-change in
the “sole” of the boot.
*Please notice the letters in the parenthesis. The first letter(s) represents the type of
stem-changer it is in the present tense, the second letter represents its spelling change in
the preterite tense. In the present tense, dormir is an _____________ stem-changer but
in the preterite it is only _____________ and only in the bottom 2 forms.
