Yes, our greatness as a nation has depended on individual initiative
Yes, our greatness as a nation has depended on individual initiative, on a belief in the free
market. But it has also depended on our sense of mutual regard for each other, of mutual
responsibility. The idea that everybody has a stake in the country, that we're all in it together and
everybody's got a shot at opportunity. Americans know this. We know that government can't solve
all our problems - and we don't want it to. But we also know that there are some things we can't
do on our own. We know that there are some things we do better together.
BARACK OBAMA, speech, Aug. 7, 2006
"Entre los individuos, como entre las naciones, el respeto al derecho ajeno es la paz",
meaning "Among individuals, as among nations, respect for the rights of others is peace".
- Benito Juarez (1806-1872)
Humankind has not woven the web of life.
We are but one thread within it.
Whatever we do to the web, we do to ourselves.
All things are bound together.
All things connect.
Chief Seattle, 1854
I do not think the measure of a civilization
is how tall its buildings of concrete are,
But rather how well its people have learned to relate
to their environment and fellow man.
