Our school is up and running again, and there is nothing quite like the first
week of school. There is a lot of excitement in our school right now. We began
the year with 143 students, which I am pretty sure is the most that I have
ever seen since I have been here. As I walked through the classrooms, the
classes were all nice and large, but not unwieldy. Our staff seems, once again,
excellent. We believe, quite strongly, that we can earn the CEF School of Excellence this year. We won the award in 2010, and we’ve got all the pieces in
place to win it again this year.
As the school year begins, this tends to also bring new life back into the parish. With summer vacationing and traveling at an end, we should see more
students and families at church as well as at the various activities of the
“program year.” With each new family that comes to our school, I am seeing a
greater acceptance and embrace of the 6 expectations that we have for our
school families, and with each passing year, I see more and more involvement
from our school families in parish life. Each new family really sees this as an
expectation.

I know that in the past, people have expressed frustration to me that there is
not much involvement with the school families in our parish, but I have seen
this changing over the past 2 or 3 years, and I expect that this will continue to
improve. It has taken time, hard work, and diligence, but I have really seen
improvement in this area over the past several years.

Nuestra escuela está en marcha y funcionando de nuevo, y no hay nada como
la primera semana de escuela. Hay mucha diversión en nuestra escuela ahora. Comenzamos el año con 143 estudiantes, que estoy bastante seguro de
que es lo mejor que he visto desde que estoy aquí. Como he caminado a través

participación de nuestra escuela de familias en la vida de la parroquia. Cada
nueva familia realmente ve esto como una expectativa.
Sé que en el pasado, las personas han expresado frustración hacia mí que no
hay mucha implicación con la escuela de familias en nuestra parroquia, pero
he visto este cambio en los últimos 2 o 3 años, y espero que este continúe mejorando. Ha tomado tiempo, trabajo duro y diligencia, pero realmente he visto
una mejora en este ámbito en los últimos años.

CONFIRMATION 2016-2017
Interviews for Confirmation have begun. Please call the
parish office to set up an interview. Cost is $100 per
child or $150 per family. Please bring the child's baptismal certificate and the payment to the interview.
This year our School of Religion will be 2 years, both
for First Communion and Confirmation. For Confirmation the child must be between 7th— 12th grade.

SCHOOL OF RELIGION CLASSES
Registration for SOR, (grades 1st – 6th), will be this
Sunday after Mass in the church basement (SJE or
SH). SOR for 1st Communion program is now a 2 year
program. It is also a Family Catechesis program and
PARENTS MUST ATTEND. Please bring a copy of
child’s baptismal certificate and payment for registration. Cost is $100 per child or $150 per family per year
for OLU registered parish members.
FALL CYO SPORTS REGISTRATION OPEN
Register for volleyball, cross country or football. New
this year: all participants must have a preparticipation physical to play. Registration fee is
$40.00 per participant which covers the school year;
registrations must be done online. Visit the website

RCIA IN ENGLISH
If you are interested in becoming a Catholic or are a
Catholic needing Confirmation and/or First Communion, then we have an excellent program to assist you in
your journey. Classes will begin on Wednesday, September 14th, at 7pm in the basement of the church
rectory/offices. All are welcome. It would be helpful if
you would contact Fr. Kent or Paco Tarelo before the
classes, so that they will know that you are coming.
SPANISH MINISTRY FAIR
On Sunday, August 28 the various Spanish ministries
will hold their third "Ministry Fair", which will take
place in the St. John the Evangelist hall, starting at 9
a.m. and will be all the day. After every Mass you are
welcome to come down and see all the activities and
ministries we have in our parish. Members from all
ministries will be present to give more information
about their ministries.

UNITY FEST 2016 MEETINGS
The Unity Fest 2016 meetings will be held every Tuesday, starting on August 9, through September 6.
Please join us and bring your ideas as we plan this
year’s event. We are always looking for more volunteers. With your help we can make this event even better. Reminder that this year’s Unity Fest is September
10, 2016.
UNITY AUCTION

CROWNING OF MARY & PRO-LIFE RALLY
Save the date! August 22, at 7 p.m. at Sacred Heart.
This will be our very first ever August Crowning of the
Blessed Virgin and pro-life rally. We have a special
guest coming to celebrate with us, Archbishop Emeritus James Keleher! Rally will be in both Spanish and
English.
ST. MARY’S FOOD KITCHEN
Next Tuesday, August 23rd is our turn at St. Mary’s
food kitchen. There will be commodities in vestibules
of both churches. Please drop off prepared items to
Sacred Heart Kitchen as early as 7 a.m. Tuesday
morning. Please watch for OLU students that will be
walking in at same time. Many thanks to all who contribute in anyway to this divine act of mercy.
UNITY FEST MINI SOCCER TOURNAMENT
The organizing committee of Unity Fest 2016 will be
hosting a Mini Soccer Tournament on September 10,
during the festival. We are inviting all members of our
parish to participate in this competition, and we will be
inviting other parishes to participate as well. To form
the teams, we will have four categories; children from
10 to 14 years, teens 15 to 18 years, women and
adults. There will be top three places in each category.
You can register for your team after the 8 a.m. Mass
and the 4 p.m. Mass the following Sundays until the
day of the festival. For more information, call Mr. Pablo

MINI TORNEO DE FUTBOL DE UNITY FEST
El comité organizador del Unity Fest 2016 será el anfitriona de un mini torneo de fútbol el 10 de Septiembre

concurso, y estaremos invitando a otras parroquias a
