Si la ley HB 11 no fue impedida en el senado de Texas, los
esfuerzos para derogarla ahora se
hacen mucho más difíciles, y, por
lo tanto, los propietarios de casas
particulares o edificios de departamentos que renten habitaciones
a inmigrantes indocumentados
incurren en un delito.
El Senador José Menéndez,
en entrevista con los medios
informativo, se refirió a esta ley
como injusta en virtud de que es
injusta en esencia al prohibirle a
los propietarios de casas de habi
tación rentar sus propiedades a
familias de inmigrantes.
En una reflexión a este respecto,
el Senador Menéndez dijo que por
eso es tan importante el registro
para ejercer el voto en las elecciones (locales y federales); que
contribuya a elegir representantes
afines a las demandas justas en
beneficio de la comunidad.
Si la oposición a dicha ley era
difícil cuando está se encontraba
en el proceso legislativo, ahora su
anulación resulta casi imposible
en virtud de que la mayoría de
los legisladores que la aprobaron
pertenecen al Partido Republicano.
Este es el consenso de muchos
activistas y dirigentes de la comunidad que, a pesar de los obstáculos, tienen el ánimo de emprender
una cruzada para abolir la ley
que –en su opinión– es injusta y
contradice al espíritu democrático
de esta nación de inmigrantes.
Aunque pudiera parecer que
es tarde para formar un frente de
oposición a la Ley HB 11 con el
propósito de luchar hasta donde
sea posible, el miércoles pasado
dirigentes de la comunidad se
reunieron en la Fundación César
Chávez y planear lo conducente.

In America, higher education is
an important step towards a bright
future for those who want to be
successful— Thanks to a fund,
many students will be ready to
take the next step.
In an effort provide Texas students with the resources needed
to get through college, the San
Antonio Area Office of the United
Negro College Fund (UNCF)
hosted its 8th annual “Mayor’s
Luncheon” this week. It was
hosted by the honorable Mayor
Ivy Taylor, who brought together
businesses, civic and education
leaders to support UNCF’s work
in providing San Antonio students
with the proper resources.

promedio, pero quiere “superar
se” y lograr su diploma de secundaria (GED) en la Universidad
Nacional Autónoma de México
(UNAM) en San Antonio.
“Siempre mi sueño fue llegar
a la universidad. A lo mejor
pueda estudiar algo, porque creo
que todo el mundo debe darse la
oportunidad de superarse”, indicó
a Efe Roiz Esparza, una de los
cientos de alumnos que recientemente iniciaron el curso de GED
(equivalente al certificado de
preparatoria) que imparte UNAM
en español.
En México, Roiz Esparza no
pudo terminar la preparatoria
porque “era huérfana de padre” y
tenía que ayudar a su madre en el
cuidado de sus demás hermanos.
“Estudiar es la mejor inversión y pienso seguir trabajando
hasta que la vida me lo permita.
Y claro, estudiar para mejorar mi
inglés”, agregó.
Pero además de recibir el curso
de GED en el campus de la
UNAM en San Antonio, Roiz
Esparza podrá tomar la prueba
en ese mismo recinto que aplica
el Departamento de Educación
federal para saber si está capaci
tada para obtener tal certificado.

The competitive rivalry between the San Antonio Spurs
and the Los Angeles Lakers has
always been evident, and it was
no different during Kobe Bryant’s final game in San Antonio.
Thousands of fans stood in
ovation and chanted “Kobe!
Kobe!” as the NBA superstar
entered the court of the AT&T
Center one last time.
The Spurs’ Big Three, Manu
Ginobili, Tony Parker, Tim Duncan and head coach Gregg Popovich honored the 37-year-old
Laker guard with an emotional
video tribute before their game
against the Los Angeles Lakers
on Feb. 6, bringing back many
memorable moments.
“It was very nostalgic, brought
back a lot of memories,” Bryant
said. “I felt extremely touched by
it. It’s weird, it’s hard to get in the
competitive mindset after that because you just feel so thankful for
them even doing that, you know
what I mean…It shows again the
mutual respect of the battles that
we’ve had.”
Over the past two decades,
Bryant has battled against the
Spurs in both the regular season and playoffs, earning him
praise and criticism from fans all
over the world, especially in the
Alamo City. The games between
these two teams will go down
in history for their thrilling and
explosive match-ups.

He is a 18-time All-Star, winner of five NBA championships
and the league’s number three
all-time scorer.
“It was fun,” Bryant said. “The
most fun was when they had
home-court advantage, and we
had to come up here and play,
and we wound up getting both
games up here, but it was intense.
We knew what they could do, we
knew how they would play, we
knew their momentum, we know
how they liked to execute. But,
there were just some nights where
we could just never get in front
of them. Their ball movement,
we were always kinda chasing
the game.”
Although the Spurs won 106102, extending their home winning streak to 28, Bryant and the
Lakers made it competitive.
After the Spurs got out to a 13
point lead, the Lakers were able
to close the gap and were down
only by three points at halftime.
Kobe struggled during the first
half, scoring only four points;
however, things picked up in the
third quarter.
“I was happy that I was able
to get loose a little bit, I felt like
the tin man for a while. Couldn’t
find any oil anywhere to loosen
up these joints,” Bryant said.
The future Hall of Famer got
into a nice rhythm and heated up
the third quarter with 16 points.
The Lakers were able to go on a
15-6 run and gain a two point lead
by the end of the third at 81-79.
“Actually, I thought it was
great,” said Spurs point guard
Tony Parker. “The fans were into
it and it felt a little like the old
days in the playoffs.”

hace en inglés y en español, pero
nosotros somos los primeros de
habla hispana que no solo imparte clases sino que también el
examen totalmente en español”,
indicó Bocanegra, ingeniero de
profesión y docente por vocación.
Para Bocanegra, el logro es
considerado como una ayuda para
el mismo alumno que se aclimata
a la universidad al llevar el curso
y luego presenta el examen en el
mismo lugar, donde “no hay caras
desconocidas ni distancias lejanas
que manejar”.
Aunque el perfil promedio del
estudiante es de gente que no
ha terminado la secundaria, la
UNAM en San Antonio no exi
ge requisito alguno para poder
ingresar a un alumno de un nivel
educación más bajo.
De acuerdo a Bocanegra,
hay muchas personas de habla
hispana con un nivel académico
escaso pero que utilizan el sentido
común para enfrentar diferentes
retos e instruirse para lograr una
meta.
Para el docente, es la “misma
escuela de la vida la que les resuelve”, al razonar los muchos
problemas matemáticos o la
comprensión de lectura.
El curso, que tiene una duración
de 132 horas presenciales, consta

de cuatro asignaturas académicas:
matemáticas, lectura, ciencias
naturales y ciencias sociales.
Al momento de presentar el
examen, el alumno se enfrenta a
un 60 por ciento de la prueba con
preguntas de opción múltiple, es
decir, que integran las preguntas que, según Bocanegra, solo
necesita un poco razonamiento y
sentido común.
Pero no todos los alumnos que
buscan aprobar el GED tienen el
común denominador de no haber
podido culminar sus estudios
de preparatoria en sus países de
origen.
Por ejemplo, Verna Peña Vera,
de 40 años y natural de Saltillo, en
el estado mexicano de Coahuila,
tiene una maestría en educación
bilingüe y es licenciada en Ciencias de la Comunicación. Por casi
dos décadas se dedicó a la docencia, hasta que llegó a Estados
Unidos hace seis meses.
“Huí de la violencia en mi país
y ahora espero poder ingresar
como maestra a cualquier centro
educativo para seguir laborando
en lo que más amo y extraño”,
declaró Peña, que para subsistir
ofrece todo tipo de repostería para
fiestas y eventos.
La edad de los alumnos que
se inscriben en el campus de la
UNAM en San Antonio para
tomar el GED oscila entre los 18
a 19 años hasta los 55 y 65 años.
Ese centro educativo imparte
además curso de varios idiomas y
también el examen de ciudadanía.
Buscan crear conciencia sobre
hepatitis C entre hispanos

de Médicos Hispanos (NHMA)
llevó a cabo un encuentro para
crear más conciencia entre los
hispanos sobre la hepatitis C, enfermedad cuyo estigma en esta comunidad dificulta su diagnóstico.
“Es una enfermedad silenciosa
que está afectando a tantos millo
nes de miembros de nuestra comunidad y tenemos que crear más
conciencia para que sea atendida
adecuadamente”, dijo a Efe Christine Rodríguez, directora de políticas de la coalición National Viral
Hepatitis Roundtable (NVHR).
De acuerdo con la experta en
salud pública, en el caso de la
comunidad hispana en particular,
existen ciertas barreras y disparidades que hacen de la hepatitis C,
una enfermedad “preocupante”.
Rodríguez señaló que los hispanos, pese a ser una población
en riesgo, tienen menos probabilidades de que se les realicen
pruebas de diagnóstico y de recibir
tratamiento, y por el contrario más
posibilidades de morir a causa de
la enfermedad.
“Hay barreras de lenguaje y
culturales, pero además no hay
suficiente concienciación acerca de
la enfermedad entre los pacientes
y tampoco entre los proveedores
de salud, que en muchos casos ni
siquiera ofrecen la prueba de diagnóstico”, indicó la experta.
Rodríguez señaló que estas
barreras, sumadas al estigma que
rodea la enfermedad y a que esta no
presenta síntomas sino hasta cuan
do está muy avanzada, dificulta
aún más la labor de concienciación
entre los hispanos.
“Es por ello que es importante
que se hable de la enfermedad
al igual que se habla de diabetes
y otras enfermedades. Que las
personas hablen con sus médicos
acerca de la enfermedad y que se
lleven a cabo la prueba de diagnóstico”, dijo.
De no tomarse conciencia sobre
los riesgos de la enfermedad, los
expertos prevén que la hepatitis C
pueda convertirse en una epidemia
que afecte a más personas que el
VIH.
Los expertos analizaron las
barreras que más afectan a los
hispanos con respecto a la hepatitis
C y las estrategias necesarias para
desarrollar programas de salud
que atiendan más adecuadamente
las necesidades de esta población
afectada por la enfermedad.

When asked if the rivalry with
the Spurs is bigger than the rivalry with the Boston Celtics, Bryant
replied, “It’s more personal [with
the Spurs] because it’s the rivalry
that I played through. The Celtics
rivalry was something that I grew
up watching. I played against
them a couple of times in the
finals, but San Antonio was year
in and year out...So that rivalry
was what fueled the majority of
my career.”
That rivalry is what he’ll miss
the most about San Antonio.
“Yeah,” Bryant said. “Competing against these guys on
the court – trying to figure out
what in the hell Pop’s thinking
with Tony, Manu and Tim, and
what their scheme is next. What
they’re setting you up for next,
how to counter that. Aside from
that, in the city, just walking
around, strolls on the Riverwalk
the night before big playoff
games – just relaxing and taking
it all in, kind of the quiet before
the storm.”
Bryant walked off the AT&T
Center floor for the last time
pounding his heart, waving and
applauding the crowd that chanted his name one last time.
“It’s an amazing feeling because we’ve had so many heated
games here. It feels good here at
the end to be able to have this
amount of respect.”

because many students that are
minorities are economically disadvantaged. Some of the reasons
are that their parents may not
have the resources to send them
to a college that leads to higher
education and be able to succeed
in today’s job market,” Mayor
Taylor told La Prensa.
Since its foundation in 1944,
UNCF has raised more than $4.5
billion to help more than 400,000
students receive college degrees
at UNCF-member institutions

One of the struggles many students face before going to college
is not having the capacity to move
forward to college level courses.
In fact, 5 percent of African
Americans are not prepared for
college level courses because
public school education does not
prepare and push their students
for higher education. Recipients
of UNCF scholarships have a 70
percent six-year graduation rate,
which is 10 percent higher than
the national average.
No matter what educational
background the student carries,
the college fund accepts students
and encourages them to work hard
until they earn a college degree.
“The unchanging commitment of Mayor Ivy R. Taylor
in investing in Better Futures is
admirable,” stated Dr. Michael
L. Lomax, Ph.D., UNCF president and CEO. “UNCF is proud
of the partnership that raises
awareness and brings us together
with stakeholders and supporters,
whose commitment is critical in
our work.”
Once students find their resources to aim to a higher education, the college fund will prepare
them for the major and career
path the student chooses. In fact,
the types of degrees the students
study in college will benefit the
economy of San Antonio.
“Right now everyone is focused on tech and the innovation
STEM. I recently spoke to a local
company here that needs more
engineers, and it would be great
if they could be homegrown, so
there are a lot of fields where
higher education could help our
economy,” said Mayor Taylor.
Once the fund connects with the
student, results have shown that
the UNCF scholarship programs
increase the likelihood that students will graduate. Together, the
student and the fund go through
hurdles, but in the end, become
stronger towards a brighter future.
“UNCF creates great impacts
for our community. When our
kids go on to get higher degrees,
they have more earning potential.
They may also create businesses
to our economy here locally,” said
Mayor Taylor. “Their dreams
are kind of the same thing as my
dream of becoming the mayor of
a welcoming and inclusive city.”

Semen can retain Zika longer Children’s Library at Palo Alto
College opens to the public
than expected, study says
EFE - A group of British scientists found remains of Zika in a
man’s semen 62 days after he was
diagnosed with the disease, which
indicates that the virus can remain
in the fluid longer than expected.
Conclusions of the study, prepared by researchers at Public
Health England, were previewed
Friday in the online edition of
Emerging Infectious Diseases
magazine of the U.S. Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention,
or CDC, before the full results are
published in May.
The research showed that a
British man, 68, infected with
Zika on his return from the Cook
Islands in 2014, showed remains
of the virus, not in the blood or
urine, but in the semen, which
retained it at a higher level 27 and
62 days after the infection than at
the onset of the disease.
“Although we did not culture
infectious virus from semen, our
data may indicate prolonged presence of virus in semen, which in
turn could indicate a prolonged
potential for sexual transmission,” the study says.
“Moreover, these findings
could inform decisions regarding what control methods are
implemented and which specimen
types are best suited for diagnostic detection,” it says.
Parallel to the publication of the
study, a conference on Zika was
held in Washington this Friday
as part of the annual meeting of
the American Association for
the Advancement of Science,
where experts such as Anthony
Fauci, director of the National
Institute of Allergy and Infectious
Diseases, and the World Health
Organization’s Christopher Dye,
acknowledged they don’t know
how long the virus can remain in
the semen and other bodily fluids.
As for the Briton, his was the
second case in which the virus
was detected in the semen, following that of a man infected in
2013 in French Polynesia, according to a scientific report published
by the CDC.
In addition, at least two cases
of sexual transmission of the virus
have been reported. The first occurred when a scientist infected
his wife in Colorado after a working trip to Senegal in 2008.
The second occurred recently,
when Dallas authorities reported
that a man had transmitted the
disease to his partner after being
infected by a mosquito bite in
another country.
The virus, which is present in a
score of countries in the Western
Hemisphere, is transmitted by the
Aedes aegypti mosquito, which is
also responsible for transmitting
Chikungunya and dengue fever.
At present neither a vaccine nor
a treatment for Zika exists.

Help! I need a doctor!

With the New Year, you are
motivated to take charge of your
health once and for all; you have

I tell patients that they need
to start going to the doctor for a
yearly physical beginning at the
age of 40. So where do you start?
What if you don’t have a primary
care doctor?
There are lots of options, and
hopefully you will find one to fit
your budget. Another option that
I have seen on several billboards
around town is Oscar Health Insurance. Patients tell me it is easy
to sign up for, and cost effective.
Now what? Get recommendations from friends for a family
practice or internal medicine doctor that they like, or use Google to
find doctors in your area. Many
family practice doctors see children and teenagers as well, so
consider that if you need a doctor
for the whole family. Internal
medicine doctors stick to grownups and manage chronic diseases,
like high blood pressure, diabetes
and heart disease.
The other question that often
comes up is: who do I need to
see? For a basic physical exam
and labs, see your family practice
or internal medicine primary care
provider. You might also see a
PA, a physician’s assistant, or a
nurse practitioner. They often
have several years of experience
and can take care of you as well
as your doctor.
What if you need to get your
annual mammogram done? You
can usually schedule that on your
own, but the location will need a
doctor to send the report to. They
will not just send it to you because
a physician, or other primary care
provider, needs to interpret the results and tell you what they mean.
A colonoscopy is done by a
gastroenterologist, also affectionately known as the GI guy or
gal; some insurances will let you
schedule this on your own as well,
since it is part of preventative
care. The GI doctor will give you
the results directly and will refer
you to a surgeon if something serious is found, like a colon cancer.
The third question that often
comes up is: do I need a referral?
That generally depends on your
insurance. Most insurances are
PPOs, so your primary care doctor
does not need to get authorization
for referral from your insurance to
send you to another doctor.
If your insurance is an HMO,
however, you must go through
your PCP to get a referral to
another doctor. In HMOs, the
primary care providers are gatekeepers, and you basically begin
with them to get to anyone else
for healthcare. Most Medicaid
and some Medicare replacement
plans are HMO-type, so you have
to start with your PCP. That is
controlled by insurance, not by
your doctor.
I hope this is helpful; now you
have no excuses not to go to the
doctor!

en becas de “Ford Impulsando
Sueños” para estudiantes de
último año de escuelas preparatorias seleccionadas en San Antonio para interesados en alcanzar
carreras en ciencias, tecnología,
ingeniería, y matemáticas.
Las becas, cada una con un
valor de $2,000, serán ofrecidas
a estudiantes cualificados que
obtengan su grado en el 2016 y
planifiquen asistir a una institución o universidad acreditada
por dos o cuatro años durante el
periodo para el que la beca ha
sido solicitada. La fecha límite
para aplicar es el 29 de febrero.
Los solicitantes cualificados
deberán someter un ensayo explicando “¿Qué Impulsa Tu
Sueño?”. Las becas son parte del

Comentarios... La nueva cara de Estados Unidos
Mi hijo,
Nicolás, va
a cumplir 18
años en el verano y, por lo
tanto, podrá
votar en las
Jorge Ramos
elecciones
presidenciales de noviembre en
Estados Unidos. Quizás Nicolás
no lo sabe todavía pero, en una
elección muy cerrada, él y millo
nes de jóvenes latinos decidirán
quién será el próximo presidente
(o presidenta) de la nación.
Esto no será un regalo de cumpleaños muy atrasado, o los buenos deseos de un padre orgulloso.
Es la realidad. Las cifras son impresionantes: El 8 de noviembre
del 2016 habrá 27 millones de hispanos elegibles para votar, según
el centro Pew. Y de ellos, casi la
mitad (44 por ciento) son latinos
muy jóvenes, o los llamados mi
llennials, de 18 a 34 años de edad.
Muchos de estos latinos mille
nnials son hijos de padres inmigrantes, hablan español en casa y
jugaron fútbol (o soccer) antes que
fútbol americano. A pesar de que
han aprendido mucho de su origen
latinoamericano y a ser solidarios
con los inmigrantes, se han integrado rápida y eficientemente a la
sociedad estadounidense. Tienen,
en general, más educación que
sus padres y mejores salarios.
Se sienten, y son, Americans.”
De hecho, son el mejor ejemplo
de que el sueño americano no es
un mito.
Nicolás, desde niño, me acompañaba a jugar fútbol los sábados
por la mañana. Luego, en la
escuela, se convirtió en un gran
y temido jugador. Siempre ha
tenido piernas muy fuertes y buen
ojo para encontrar la portería.
Pero cuando entró a preparatoria
o high school todo cambió. Dejó
el esférico por una pelota ovalada
y su meta es ser pateador en un
equipo de fútbol americano en la
universidad. Patea la pelota a más
de 70 yardas. Soy su fan.
Nicolás está muy ligado con
miembros de su familia en Puerto
Rico y en México, pero su identificación es, claramente, con Estados Unidos. Hemos visto juntos
varios debates presidenciales,
analizamos las diferencias entre
los candidatos, las contrasta con
las ideas de sus amigos y sabe que,
tan pronto cumpla 18 años, se va a
registrar para votar en la elección
presidencial.
Ese es precisamente el proble
ma. Los jóvenes latinos votan
muy poco. En el 2012, solo 37
de cada 100 jóvenes hispanos
salieron a votar. Eso es bajísimo.
Pero ese no es un problema solo
entre los jóvenes. Solo 48 de
cada 100 latinos de todas las
edades votaron hace cuatro años
(comparado con el 64 por ciento
de los blancos y 66 por ciento
de los afroamericanos). Hay mil
excusas y explicaciones, pero la
triste realidad es que los latinos
votan poco.
Quizás eso cambie gracias
a Donald Trump. Sus insultos
contra los inmigrantes han sido
tantos y tan frecuentes que no me
extrañaría para nada que, indignados, millones de latinos salgan
a votar por primera vez. Esa sí
sería una dura trompada contra la
intolerancia y la xenofobia.
La verdad es que Trump o cual
quiera que sea el nominado del
Partido Republicano a la presidencia va a suplicar en el verano
y el otoño el voto de los jóvenes
latinos, sobre todo en estados
clave como la Florida, Nevada
y Colorado. Es la única manera
de ganarle la Casa Blanca a los
demócratas que, históricamente,
han capturados dos de cada tres
votos hispanos. Nicolás y sus
amigos verán cómo los candidatos
presidenciales de ambos partidos
intentarán enamorarlos.
Hemos visto el futuro y el
futuro es nuestro, dijo en 1984 el
líder campesino, César Chávez.
Estas tendencias son fuerzas de
la historia que no pueden ser
detenidas. Ninguna persona u
organización las puede resistir por
mucho tiempo. Son inevitables.
Tenía razón.
Los latinos pasaremos de 55
millones a más de 100 millones
para el 2050. Y los latinos somos
muy jóvenes el promedio es de 19
años de edad para los nacidos en
Estados Unidos y cada año más
de 800 mil hispanos cumplen 18
años y se convierten en votantes
potenciales.
Prepárense para fiestas, piñatas,
mariachis y un montón de políticos champurreando el español con
tal de ganar el voto latino. Ocurre
cada elección presidencial. Es tan
obvio que hasta le he puesto un
nombre: el síndrome de Cristóbal
Colón (porque parece ser que cada
cuatro años nos redescubren a los
latinos en este país).
En las manos de Nicolás y de
su generación está el futuro de
Estados Unidos. Y yo me encargaré de asegurarme que el martes
8 de noviembre, bien temprano,
Nicolás salga a votar.
El resto depende de él.

Just a Thought: It is Valentine’s Day

column, I promoted today’s
celebration of
Valentine’s
Day also kno

I pointed out that it is associated with romantic love and some
of its historical significance. Well
now that it is actually Valentine’s
Day, let’s revisit it again without
rehashing what I wrote about
back then.
According to historical data,
the history of Valentine’s Day
is obscure and further clouded
by various fanciful legends. The
holiday’s roots are in the ancient
Roman festival of Lupercalia, a
fertility celebration commemorated annually on Feb.15.
Pope Gelasius I recasted this
pagan festival as a Christian feast
day circa 496 A.D., declaring
Feb. 14 to be St. Valentine’s Day.
What is confusing is that there
were three early Christian saints
by that name. Who knew?
Which St. Valentine this early
pope intended to honor remains
a mystery, according to the
Catholic Encyclopedia. One was
listed as a priest in Rome, another
a bishop in Terni and of a third
St. Valentine almost nothing is
known, except that he met his
end in Africa.
Rather astonishingly, all three
Valentines were said to have
been martyred on Feb. 14. What
a coincidence!
Most scholars believe that the
St. Valentine of the holiday was
a priest who attracted the disfavor
of Roman emperor Claudius ll
around 270 A.D. At this stage,
the factual ends and the mythic
begins.
According to one legend,
Claudius II had prohibited marriage for young men, claiming that bachelors made better
soldiers. Valentine continued
to secretly perform marriage
ceremonies but was eventually
apprehended by the Romans and
put to death.
Another legend has it that Valentine, imprisoned by Claudius,
fell in love with the daughter of
his jailer. Before he was executed, he allegedly sent her a letter
signed, “from your Valentine.”
Probably the most plausible
story surrounding St. Valentine is
one not focused on Eros (passionate love) but on Agape (Christian
love): he was martyred for refusing to renounce his religion.
In 1969, the Catholic Church
revised its liturgical calendar,
removing the feast days of saints
whose historical origins were
questionable. St. Valentine was
one of the casualties.
When I was Justice of the
Peace, I performed a few weddings on St. Valentine’s Day. The
most memorable was one I did
allude to in my last Valentine’s
Day column. I performed it at
a flea market in the concession
office on Fredericksburg Road
where they met, fell in love and
exchanged vows. True love. That
was definitely a unique wedding.
As stated earlier, Valentine’s
Day was first associated with
romantic love in 18th-century
England. That is where it evolved
into an occasion in which lovers
expressed their love for each
other by presenting flowers and
sending greeting cards known as
“Valentines.”
Those Valentine’s Day symbols are used today to include
the heart-shapes, doves and the
figure of the winged Cupid. Since
the 19th century, handwritten
valentines have given way to
mass-produced greeting cards.
On Valentine’s Day, many
couples, young and old, are expected to exchange vows, since
it is the most popular day in the
year to get married. Whether or
not you get married, it is still a
good idea to at least send someone you care about a Valentine’s
Day Card.
And as always, what I write is
“Just a Thought.”

Paranoia en el Partido Republicano

Nunca ni nadie pensó que,
a estas alturas, el electorado
republicano tendría un contingente de candidatos con posibilidades de llegar a la Casa
Blanca.
La contienda electoral repu
blicana se ha convertido en un
cuadrilátero de pelea, donde
todos se dan golpes sin ningún
grado de contemplación. Cada
uno decide no iniciar la retirada,
a pesar de que solo tienen la mitad de aliento para mantenerse
parados.
Se creía que, después de las
elecciones de New Hampshire,
los candidatos del llamado
establishment iban a reducirse
en cantidad. De los cuatro que
participaron –Marco Rubio, Jeb
Bush, Chris Christie y John Kasich—, por lo menos, dos iban a
abandonar la contienda.
Una vez terminado el Super
Tuesday del 1ro. de marzo se esperaba que solo dos candidatos
(uno del establishment y el otro
del no establishment) iban a sobrevivir. No creo que resulte de
esa manera. Los candidatos del
establishment siguen movien
do el rabo y tienen los mismos
bríos que cuando empezaron su
campaña política.
Jeb Bush ya expresó que
movilizó a su equipo para tratar
reactivar su campaña política.
Las primarias de Carolina del
Sur están programadas para el
20 de este mes, y Bush siente
que, al igual que su padre y su
hermano mayor, tendrá el apoyo
del electorado de este estado.
Kasich, que se ubicó segundo
en New Hampshire, también
manifestó que estará batallan
do por el voto de Carolina del
Sur. No creo que le vaya bien.
Sus políticas moderadas son
consideradas “radicales” en un
estado donde están acostumbra
dos a apoyar a candidatos que
se ajustan a una agenda social
conservadora.
Por su parte, Rubio, que sufrió
una aplastante derrota en New
Hampshire, sugirió que cometió
un grave error en el debate de la
semana pasada, pero que su candidatura continuará en Carolina
del Sur.
Como todos sabemos, el senador de Florida perdió sus albores
de gran comunicador cuando
Chris Christie lo vapuleó en
pleno debate. Le hizo ver como
un robot mecanizado y como un
niño de escuela que se aprende
todo de memoria.
Christie, el vapuleador, logró
reunir solo 7 por ciento de
apoyo de los votantes de New
Hampshire. Su campaña tam-
poco fue buena. Debido a que
implica mucho dinero seguir en
el camino hacia la presidencia,
es muy probable que Christie
finalmente cuelgue sus “guantes
de box”.
Carly Fiorina y Ben Carson,
considerados independientes,
seguramente seguirán en la
carrera, pero su impacto en el
resultado final es poco o nada.
De manera que a muy pocos les
importa si estos dos candidatos
siguen o se quedan en la contienda política.
Este tipo de escenario político
solo beneficia a una persona: a
Donald Trump. El billonario
de los bienes raíces solo tiene
que mirar y disfrutar cómo sus
camaradas de equipo se golpean
y se aniquilan.
Al final solo quedará un candidato en su frente, quien, después
de tantas batallas, se encontrará
moribundo, listo para darle un
golpe certero de gracia.
Así está el Partido Republi
cano; lejos de ser el partido
político de antes. Su esencia
cambió rotundamente y su nueva
imagen está contaminada por los
grupos más retrógrados del país.

host the 9th annual “City Manager’s Step Up to Wellness 5K
Walk and Run” on Feb. 27 at
SeaWorld San Antonio, 10500
SeaWorld Drive. Check-in begins
at 6 a.m. with the race starting at
8 a.m.
“Since the race’s inception,
this event has grown to include
participation from not only numerous City employees and their
families, but citizens and community partners as well,” said City
Manager Sheryl Sculley. “The
weather may have put a damper
on last year’s race, but this year’s
event is shaping up to be best 5K
to date. This event offers a great
way to be active with your family
and friends, so I invite the community to join us on Feb. 27.”

The San Antonio Metropolitan
Health District confirmed two
additional cases of Zika in Bexar
County.
There is now a total of three
Zika cases. All three individuals
acquired the infection while traveling abroad. In addition to the
three confirmed cases, there are
three more individuals under investigation for possible infection.
The Zika virus is part of the
same family as the viruses that
cause yellow fever, West Nile,
Chikungunya and dengue. Zika
is primarily transmitted through
the bite of infected Aedes mosquitoes. It can also be transmitted from a pregnant mother to
her baby during pregnancy or
around the time of birth. In rare
cases, it can also be transmitted
through sexual activity or blood
transfusion.
For people who get sick, the
illness is usually mild. For this
reason, many people might not
realize they have been infected.
Common symptoms include
fever, rash, joint pain or conjunctivitis (red eyes). Symptoms
typically begin two to seven days
after being bitten by an infected
mosquito.
Due to a possible link between
infection during pregnancy and
microcephaly in the infant, pregnant women are strongly advised
to delay travel to Zika-affected
areas. If travel is unavoidable they
should take extra precautions to
prevent mosquito bites. See your
healthcare provider if you are
pregnant and have traveled to a
Zika-affected area within the last
12 weeks.
Additionally, pregnant women
and women who are considering
becoming pregnant who have a
sex partner living in or traveling
to Zika-affected areas should:
• Abstain from sex
• Use condoms correctly and
consistently for the duration of
the pregnancy.
Men who traveled to a Zikaaffected area also should:
• Abstain from sex
• Use condoms correctly and
consistently for three months after
their return
With no treatment or vaccine
available, the only protection
against Zika is to avoid travel
to Zika-affected areas. If you do
travel to a country where Zika is
present, the CDC advises strict
adherence to mosquito protection
measures:
• Use air conditioning or window/door screens.
• Use mosquito repellant on
skin and clothing, even during
the day.
• Wear long-sleeved shirts and
long pants.
• Empty standing water from
outdoor containers (even small
containers.)
See your healthcare provider
if you develop a fever, rash, joint
pain or red eyes within two weeks
after traveling. Be sure to tell your
health care provider where you
traveled.

Feliz Día de San Valentín: Amor y Salud para los enamorados

Febrero, mes dedicado al amor
y la amistad. En esta ocasión, por
ser año bisiesto y por coincidencia
se estará celebrando en el séptimo
día de la semana (domingo), que
es de asueto para la mayoría de la
fuerza laboral en nuestra cada día
bella y visitada región de El Álamo.
A través de este espacio que
semanalmente aprovecho para dar
mis testimonios sobre alcoholismo
y cómo obtener mejor calidad de
vida, primeramente a mis tres lectores les deseo un Feliz Día de San
Valentín. Y a quienes gusten leer
nuestra edición de fin de semana
(Weekend Edition) les deseo de
todo corazón que disfruten con sus
seres queridos y amistades dándoles los acostumbrados regalitos
y parabienes.
A los enamorados les deseo
Amor y Salud. Quienes se encuentran en noviazgo, comprometidos
o casados la pueden pasar de
maravilla invitando a su pareja a
visitar su salón de baile o centro
gastronómico favorito. Si deciden
brindar con sus bebidas de prefe
rencia, háganlo con moderación
y responsabilidad. En caso de que
se les pasen las copas, por favor
no tomen el volante, llamen a
un familiar que no haya ingerido
bebidas de contenido alcohólico o
simplemente alquilen un taxi.
Para quienes son abstemios y
gustan celebrar el 14 de febrero

mejor preparación o simplemente
cambien su orden. Recuerden que
están celebrando el Día del Amor
y la Amistad, por un mal momento
no echen a perder esta tradicional
fecha.
Así le estarán demostrando a su
pareja el amor y respeto que siente
por él o ella. La cautela personal es
lo más preciado en esos momentos.
Por ningún mal rato se dejen llevar
por la ira, controlen sus modales
y verán que al final del banquete
recibirán su recompensa.
Recientemente una amistad me
confesó que estaba planeando lle
var a su media naranja a un nuevo
restaurante estilo oriental.
“Fui con unos amigos a probar
el banquete de este nuevo centro
gastronómico porque me apasiona
saborear platillos de la gastronomía
oriental. Tras haber comido lo
acostumbrado, vegetales, ensalada,
pequeñas porciones de caldos y
mariscos, decidí probar ensalada
de cangrejo en concha. En dicho
momento no tuve ninguna mala
sensación, el sabor me pareció
adecuado a mi paladar, por lo que
opté por comerme una tercera
porción. De beber ordené refresco
de cola (de dieta), así que hasta el
momento mi experiencia fue buena
saboreando el menú de ese nuevo
restaurante”, dijo mi conocido.
Al siguiente día me lo volví a
encontrar, diciéndole que se me
había olvidado que me diera la
dirección del nuevo restaurante.
Molesto me contestó indicándome
que había dormido pocas horas
porque al parecer le hizo mala
digestión la cena. Yo le dije que
a lo mejor su malestar estomacal
se debió al exceso de refresco que
bebió, lo cual pudo haberle creado
una “revoltura” estomacal, como
me ha sucedido en varias ocasiones
que me sobrepaso bebiendo para de
refrescos en la cena. “No, hombre,
creo que la soltura de estómago me
dio por glotón, en lugar de haberme
comido un par de porciones de
ensalada de marisco en la concha
nada más me hubiese comido dos.
También me culpo porque no había
desayunado como de costumbre,
traía el estómago casi vacío. Me
hizo falta mi pan tostado y huevos
con jamón”, comentó mi estimado
conocido.
Por ello, siempre hay que tener
cuidado de ver lo que comemos,
siempre tener en cuenta tomar un
buen desayuno o almuerzo que
ayude al sistema digestivo a estar
preparado para la cena.
Por último, les recomiendo que a
partir de este domingo 14 de febrero, tanto a mujeres como varones
en sus respectivas agendas, añadan
sesiones de ejercicio físico para que
no pierdan la figura y corran menos
riesgos en contraer enfermedades
respiratorias, alta presión arterial,
problemas mentales y diabetes.
Para quienes tienen problemas
con la bebida, hagan un plan para
disminuir la cantidad de alcohol
que consumen durante la semana.
Por el amor que le tienen a su
pareja y familiares, poco a poco
vayan dejando de libar, por igual
si es que tienen preferencia por
el tabaco.
Les aseguro que al amor de su
vida le va a sorprender que cuando
estén en la intimidad no le llegue el
olor a licor o tabaco. Es ahí donde
el amor por su ser querido va a
triunfar.

de cáncer jugadores del equipo
Rampage de San Antonio, propiedad de la empresa Spurs Sports &
Entertainment, vistieron camisas
color de rosa durante la cele
bración del sexto partido anual
denominado “Pink in the Rink”
(Color de rosa en la cancha).
Este evento contó con el patrocinio del sistema de hospitales CHRISTUS Santa Rosa
Health System y la compañía de
plomería On Time Elmer.
Rampage en su sede –el renovado AT&T Center– en su partido
contra el visitante rival Stars de
Texas logró una congregación
de 14, 135 espectadores, entre
ellos sobrevivientes y familiares
de víctimas del cáncer quienes
aplaudieron las espectaculares
acciones y los reconocimientos a
organizaciones que aportan ayuda
a personas de escasos recursos
económicos que padecen de la
maligna enfermedad.
En la cancha color de rosa se
enclavaron dos listones alusivos
al cuidado e investigación del
cáncer. Uno de ellos lució nombres que fans escribieron con

tratamiento con la esperanza de

Six outstanding student-athletes honored as Built Ford
Tough Texas High School Football Players of the Year
with 9,868 yards, ranking fourth
all-time in the state, and 117 rushing touchdowns. Including three
pass-reception scores, he wound
up with 120 TDs and 10,898 allpurpose yards. No wonder the
folks at Stanford can’t wait to
have him on campus next season.

record by more than 2,000 yards!
A high B-plus student, Trevor
helped the Mustangs capture
the area track title last year. He
also participates in a variety of
activities, including the FCA and
the PALS leadership program, and
reads to McAllen’s Elementary
School youngsters.
“From his first day at practice,
he told us he would break all of
the Valley rushing records, and
he did,” said Coach Bill Littleton.
“His first career carry as a freshman produced a 73-yard TD. We
knew he was for real. He’s an
outstanding football player and a
human being, and he’s as good a
student on the field as in the classroom. He’s not very talkative but
leads by example. He simply does
what needs to be done. Trevor
is amazingly humble, especially
given all of the accolades he has
received.”
CLASS 5-A: Jett Duffey, Sr.,
Quarterback, Mansfield Lake
Ridge:
There’s no truth to the rumor
that the double-T in Jett Duffey’s
name stands for Texas Tech. But
if he has the career in Lubbock
that everyone expects, it could
happen! But life without Jett will
be a tough adjustment for the fans
of Mansfield Lake Ridge. The
Eagles have never won a game
without Duffey at quarterback.
He led them to the school’s first
win, a 77-75 barnburner over Burleson Centennial as a sophomore.
And now, after a spectacular
15-0 run to the state finals (a loss
to George Ranch), Jett stands
ready to start a new chapter in his
football life. He wound up with
2,756 passing yards and 29 TDs
along with 1,703 rushing yards
and 20 more scores. What coaches
love it about Duffey’s game is his
quintessential dual-threat capability, combining 4.6 of speed and
escapability on the run with a
top-flight arm and the ability to
take a hit in the pocket and still
make the throws.
Coaches also love what Jett
accomplished off the field. He
graduated last month with a solid
91.5 grade average to rank in the
upper fifth of his class. He also
served on the Student-Athlete
Leadership Council, worked
with kids with cancer, and was a
standout on Lake Ridge’s track
team. He’s already enrolled at
Texas Tech, where he’s looking
forward to kick-starting his academic career and college football
career this spring.
“He’s one of those kids who
just makes things happen,” says
Coach Kirk Thor. “Jett always
places the good of the team ahead
of his personal achievements.
And as many accolades as he has
received over these past couple of
years and all the attention that has
been focused on him, he remains
a wonderfully humble kid. He’s
not just an athlete, he’s a student
athlete with class.”
CLASS 4-A: Shelton Eppler,
Sr., Quarterback, Navasota :
Few quarterbacks in Texas
history have enjoyed a career to
match that of Navasota’s Shelton
Eppler. About the only thing
missing from his resume was a
second straight state 4A Division
1 title. The Rattlers, who won
the 2014 title, were eliminated
in an upset by Carthage, 55-48, a
couple of games short of another
championship. But Shelton’s
body of work over three years
is nothing short of amazing. The
6-1, 200-pounder completed 683
passes on 1,064 attempts for an
eye-popping 12,245 yards and
159 touchdowns. That ranked
fourth all-time in TD passes and
fifth all-time in passing yardage
among all Texas quarterbacks.
And his 71 touchdown passes

Drew also excels off the gridiron. His straight-A average
places him in the top 10 percent

National Honor Society. He’s active in the Fellowship of Christian

field. On top of everything, he’s
also an Eagle Scout.

a sophomore, and it has been
great to see him grow in every

Prestonwood Christian Academy:
Wherever you look in the alltime Texas HS passing record
book, you’re going to find Ryan
Cash. The Plano Prestonwood
Christian quarterback finished his
career with 11,307 yards and 122
touchdowns, both ranking seventh
in the state’s all-time annals. He
also threw for 616 yards in a single
game (against IMG Academy in
his junior year), the fifth best all-
time performance. But perhaps
his number one achievement was
winning the TAPPS Division 1
title for the Lions, culminating
in a 32-27 nail-biting victory
over arch-rival Dallas Bishop
Dunne and avenging losses to
Dunne in the 2013 and 2014 title
games. “His numbers might have
been even more incredible if we
played 16 games like UIL titlists
and if we didn’t have him on the
bench for 16 of the 56 quarters
we played this season because
of lopsided scores,” says Lions’
Coach Chris Cunningham. Because Ryan is a bit undersized
at 6-1, 165 pounds, Cunningham
initially questioned his durability.
No more. “I wouldn’t trade him
for any other quarterback,” the
coach says.
Ryan also excels off the field.
He has a 3.65 GPA, is active at
Prestonwood Baptist Church and
has served on missions to the Dominican Republic and Atlanta via
the Prestonwood baseball team.
Despite his passing prowess, it
looks like Cash’s future is on the
diamond. He has played for years
with the Dallas Patriots elite team
and is signed to attend Oklahoma
State for baseball.
“He’s just our guy,” says Cunningham. “It’s amazing that,
because of baseball, he has never
attended a football college camp
or scouting camp. I’m convinced
that if he had, college football
coaches would be banging down
hi door. He’s my only player to
be elected captain twice by his
teammates, and what you see if
what you get with him, a player,
a leader, and a friend. I wouldn’t
want anyone else leading my
team.”

En el escenario de Arneson
River Theatre fue presentado un
programa presidido por Maggie

Paseo del Rio Association.
El público disfruto de dos horas
de música antes del desfile, el
que empezó a las 4 de la tarde e
hizo el recorrido entre el teatro y
Rivercenter Mall.
Participaron una docena de barcas alegóricas decoradas llevando
a entusiastas participantes con
máscaras y atuendos de carnaval.
A este desfile seguirá una lista
de atractivos eventos para el año
en curso, entre otros el de Armed
Forces Parade, y la participación

San Antonio’s own legendary Vikki Carr will return to the
beautiful Tobin Center for the Performing Arts for a special night,
where she promises to sing her
biggest hits and take a trip down
memory lane.
One of the most beloved singers in San Antonio and around the
world, Carr will light up the stage
in the H-E-B Performance Hall
of the Tobin on Feb. 20 at 8 p.m.

Her melodic voice and presence
have captivated audiences for over
five decades, during which she has
garnered four Grammy Awards,
including a Lifetime Achievement
from the Recording Academy, and
has released over 60 bestselling
recordings. She can belt out the
blues or touch the heart with a soft
romantic ballad.
Now living in San Antonio,
Carr has become one of the most
accomplished entertainers in the
United States, Latin America and
Europe having worked in radio,
television, film and theatre.
At 74, Carr has no plans of
slowing down. La Prensa recently
visited the Texan singer in her
home in San Antonio, where
she talked about her upcoming
performance, her music and her
Mexican heritage.
“I’ve only just gotten started,”
she said with a chuckle. “It’s
been a remarkable career. I’ve
met some of the most incredible
performers in this business.”
Born Florencia Bisenta de
Casillas Martinez Cardona in El
Paso and raised in Southern California, who would later change
her name to Vikki Carr, discovered her love for music at the age
of four when she sang “Adeste
Fidelis” in Latin at a Christmas
program.
“I love what I do, and this is
what God wants me to do. I knew
that, I think, from the very beginning,” Carr said with a smile. “I
was put on this earth, as we all are,
we all have special gifts, and it’s
up to each one of us individually

mine is singing.”
Her father, an instrumental
figure in her life, was always
supportive of her career since the
beginning.
“I actually followed in the footsteps of my father. He had wanted
to be a professional singer, and
he never took the opportunity,
so when he saw that I was very
interested in music, he pushed
me,” Carr said. “He was very
strict. I couldn’t go out on dates
or anything, but anything that had
to do with music, I could do. So I
took every music class at school.
He would say, ‘You’re always
gone,’ and I would say, ‘but, it’s
music,’ so I went on the road at
the age of 18.”
She was signed to a contract
with Liberty Records in 1961 and
recorded “He’s A Rebel,” which
first became a hit in Australia.
That title was soon followed by
the unforgettable release, “It Must
Be Him,” which charged up the
charts in England. One year later,
the single was released in the U.S.
and earned Carr three Grammy
Award nominations.
“I was 26. That record became
my big worldwide hit and because
of it, I was able to fight for the allSpanish album,” Carr explained.
“The Anglo audience wanted to
hear the Spanish songs because I
had always included them in my
shows. That’s when I realized that
music is a universal language.”
Then, her father’s dream of seeing her release a Mariachi album
finally came true.
“That’s what my dad loved
to do. His idol was Don Pedro
Vargas. I had been nominated for
a Grammy for ‘It Must Be Him’
and ‘Pen In My Hand,’ but isn’t
it ironic that winning my first
Grammy was for my español.
My first one was a ranchera, ‘Ni
Princesa Ni Esclava.’”
Her music embraces four languages, and she is among the first
artists to bridge the cultures of
the U.S. and Latin America, paving the way for many performers
today.
“During my entire career, what
I’ve tried to do as a Mexican
American is to introduce our culture and our music to the Anglo
audience. That’s been my dream.
To be that bridge between those of
us born here and los mexicanos,”
Carr said. “When I go to Mexico,
I am so proud of my heritage.”
Her performance will include
some of her biggest hits with
Mariachi music, alongside University of Texas-Pan American
at Edinburg’s award-winning
Mariachi Aztlán. Carr will also
take some time to share with her
audience some of her most fascinating stories and anecdotes of
all the legendary performers she
has known.
Frank Sinatra said, “She possesses my kind of voice”, Dean
Martin called her “the best girl
singer in the business” and Bing
Crosby and Ella Fitzgerald named
her among their three favorite
female singers of all time.
Elvis Presley was also very fond
of her and even remarked on stage
in Las Vegas many times that Carr
was one of his favorite singers and
that he liked her because “she sang
from the gut” and introduced her
at many of his personal appearances in which she attended.
“Sinatra said some very nice
things about me. I was at his
home, I cooked him huevos rancheros,” Carr recalled. The singer
has also performed for the Queen
of England, five United States
presidents and wartime soldiers
in Vietnam.
“When I think about how this
little kid born in El Paso, delivered
by the same midwife that delivered my father, has accomplished
so much, it’s amazing,” said Carr.
Over her successful career, Carr
is well respected not only as an artist, but also as a humanitarian. The
singer devoted her time various
charities, as well as performing
for benefit concerts to support
San Antonio’s local Holy Cross
High School.

McNay Art Museum presents stellar German exhibit

Art is an expression that tell
a story about a time dear to the
artist’s heart— At the McNay,
there is a new exhibit that dedicates the full story of a powerful
country.
This week, the museum presented 84 paintings of the most
significant European art created
by both masters and emerging
artists in “Made in Germany:
Contemporary Art from the Rubell Family Collection.” In fact,
the McNay is the only venue
that has scheduled to host the
seminal exhibition, which is the
first presentation of the Rubell
Family Collection’s acclaimed
German holdings.
For the past 35 years, German
art has gone through a futile
period, during which large-scale
works, particularly large-scale
photographs, have become contemporary and widespread. The
exhibit covers many German
paintings, sculptures, photographs and works on paper.
Visitors will be able to admire
the established works of famous
artists like Anselm Kiefer, Sigmar Polke, and Gerhard Richter;
sculptors Katarina Fritsch and
Thomas Schutte; photographers
Bernd and Hilla Becher, Thomas
Demand and Thomas Ruff; and
fresh coming painters Kerstin
Bratsch and David Ostrowski.
“At the McNay, we have a preeminent concentration of modern European art, but this presentation is our first exhibition
of important art from the last few
decades. It is also worth noting
that in the late 1800s, Germans
made up approximately onethird of the population here in
Bexar County,” discussed Chief
Curator/Curator of Contemporary Art René Paul Barilleaux.
“In those respects, ‘Made in
Germany’ is directly linked both
to one of the McNay’s foremost
focuses and to the history of our
wider San Antonio community.”
Barilleaux organized the exhibition to reflect the perspective
of the Rubell Family Collection.
It is one of the world’s largest
privately owned contemporary
art collections established in
1964.
The Rubell Family has been
the key collectors of German
art, and there has been no presentation of it until the McNay
decided to put it on display. Barilleaux took his time to not only
filter the works solely through
an encyclopedic lens, but to offer immediate insights into how
German Art has engaged collectors in recent years.
The near-chronological presentation results in a compelling narrative that reveals how
individual artists first gained
attention; the dynamic between
students, teachers and peers; and
the ongoing dialogue created as
younger artists’ reflect from the
giants who proceed them.

put these works on display and
to work alongside Barilleaux.

the works to be seen.

Ultimately, the “Made in
Germany” exhibit will display
art that is proactive and often
explored the German social
consciousness through narrative
imagery and elements drawn
from the real world. The McNay
would like their audience to get a
full grip on the works by including several interactive events: a
conversation between Barilleaux
and the Rubells, a Sunday afternoon family activity, a contemporary German film series, and a
program connecting German and
Mexican cultures around Polka
and Conjunto music.
Throughout the exhibits, this
will give the audience a lens
through an exhibit that was pre-
viously hidden and is now ready
to be displayed.

38th Annual CineFestival to feature panel
discussions, celebrity guests and much more
The 38th Annual San Antonio
CineFestival, the nation’s longest
running Latino film festival and
San Antonio’s original indie film
festival, will take place Feb. 19 –
Feb. 27 at the historic Guadalupe
Theater (1301 Guadalupe Street).
The nine-day event will feature
screenings, appearances by celebrity guests, panel discussions, a
filmmaking master class, receptions
and networking opportunities. Festival passes are $50 and individual
screenings start at $8. Senior, youth
and panels are free.
“CineFestival will screen some
amazing indie and Latino films
that would be hard to see anywhere
else,” said Jim Mendiola, CineFestival director. “You’ll be able to meet
the directors and stars and talk with
them one-on-one and up close.”
The Feb.19 opening night event
features the “Mi Familia Family Reunion.” CineFestival will screen the
classic 1995 film hosted by several
of the movie’s stars live and onstage
in an extended Q&A.
As Hollywood debates #OscarsSoWhite, “Mi Familia Family
Reunion” will extend the diversity
conversation to include Latino actors in the mix. The “Mi Familia
Family Reunion,” along with the
Feb. 24 tribute to Pepe Serna is part
of CineFestival’s theme of celebrating the Latino film actor.
“Mi Familia is jam packed with
amazing Latino acting talent,” said
Mendiola. “We want to celebrate
the Latino actor with our Family
Reunion special event and promote
our own hashtag that will complement the #OscarsSoWhite movement: #CineSoBrown.”
CineFestival is also proud to
announce the screening of “Los
Punks: We Are All We Have” on
Friday, Feb. 26 at 9 p.m. This award
winning film about the dynamic
underground Latino punk scene
in East L.A. recently screened to
critical acclaim at the 2016 Slamdance Film Festival. This will be
only the second public screening
of this engaging and fascinating
documentary.
Also screening on Feb. 26 is
the Tim Roth thriller “600 Miles”
about an ATF agent and cartel gun
runners. “600 Miles” was recently
awarded Best First Film at the 2015
Berlin Film Festival. It was Mexico’s official submission this year
for Academy Award consideration.
Rounding out the new slate of
films is an expanded Shorts Program. This eclectic exploration of
the short form of storytelling will
include several World Premieres
and many films created by San
Antonio’s growing talent of local
filmmakers.
Among other highlights of Cine-
Festival are the Screenwriting Lab
produced in partnership with the
Sundance Institute; a screening of
the Fox TV show “Bordertown”
hosted by the shows’ creators; a day
dedicated to documentary filmmaking, including a free Storytelling

San Antonio, which will include a
musical performance by the legendary singers from San Antonio’s

For good reason, indie games
have recently seen an increase in
popularity and critical recognition.
Independent developers are
breaking the mold of stale formats,
like first-person and third-person
shooters, and ushering in new
and interesting ways to incorporate innovation in storytelling and
gameplay.
ColdWood Interactive’s “Unravel” is the latest indie game to
accomplish all of the above. It
gives gamers a break from bigger
mainstream games that are currently
focusing on the same basic elements
of open-world gaming and aimlessly shooting at each other.
“Unravel” begins with an old
woman living alone in her twilight
years. When we first see her she is
looking through photo albums. Her
eyes begin to well up with tears right
before she puts the albums away.
She grabs a basket of yarn balls and
knitting needles and heads upstairs.
On her way upstairs, a red ball of
yarn bounces down the stairs.
The ball of yarn magically (and
without explanation) produces our
little red hero named Yarny.

Playing as Yarny, you begin to
explore the living room. You will
first notice that the photo album is
filled with blurry old photos. While
you explore further you begin to
find picture frames that Yarny can
transport into.
Once inside the picture/memory,
you control Yarny through platform-based levels that challenge
you with puzzles and hundreds of
ways that Yarney can meet his end.
When you complete a level, you are
transported back to the old woman’s
living room, where you find that
some of the photos that were blurred
out are now visible.
The house is full of picture
frames, and each one offers Yarny
the opportunity to assist in unraveling memories to help the old
woman remember her family and
metaphorically bond the family
together using yarn.
The gameplay is all built around
Yarny’s spool of yarn, which acts
like a lifeline. As you progress
through “Unravel,” the puzzles become more difficult. As you venture
through each level, checkpoints offer you additional yarn to help you
advance further. There are plenty
of obstacles in your way, and you
will need a puzzle-solving mind or
a friend to help you out in a lot of
the later levels.
“Unravel” communicates its narrative through emotional nuance and
is completely devoid of dialogue.
The score is amazingly cinematic
and manages to take the place of
what conventional dialogue and
storytelling would usually achieve.
“Unravel” offers an adorable and
charming experience that will challenge you, while offering a great
little indie game that wont’ break
the bank and offers hours of puzzlesolving, platforming adventure.
“Unravel” is currently available
on Playsation 4, Xbox One and
Microsoft Windows for $19.99.
‘Deadpool’ slashes competition
over Valentine’s Day weekend

My cousin introduced me to
Deadpool when I was about six
years old in the form of a gifted
action figure. I’m a little biased;
I’ve been a fan of the appointed
‘Merc with the mouth’ since then.
So, I was ridiculously excited
for his proper screen treatment
– completely disregarding the
abomination that was Deadpool’s
debut in 2009’s X-men Origins:
Wolverine, in which studio executives inexplicably sewed the
characters mouth shut.
After a short film of the character was leaked on the internet –
subsequently garnering millions
of views – Fox gave the green
light on the character’s modest
budget.
At times, the viewer is painfully aware of the flick’s financial
shortcomings.
After being diagnosed with terminal cancer, former mercenary
Wade Wilson (Ryan Reynolds,
embodying the part, making the
character leap from illustrated
comic panels) partakes in an
experimental procedure, inflicting mutant powers on those
with fatal diseases. When the
experimenter Ajax (Ed Skrein)
has a vindictive agenda, Wade is
deformed and escapes, adapting
the monitor Deadpool in his quest
for vengeance.
Honestly, the plot is foolish
and doesn’t matter.
The fun in Deadpool is the humor – a tongue in cheek approach
of our protagonist breaking down
the fourth wall, and communicating directly to the audience.
The entire thing is a send up of
the superhero genre; some lines
work, others don’t. However, the
whole purpose of the character is
dumb, gory fun. That’s exactly
what the audience should take
from this R-rated Marvel Comics
extravagance.

Los Plebes del Rancho de Ariel
Camacho traen nuevo disco

El próximo 26 de febrero la
agrupación mexicana Los Plebes
del Rancho de Ariel Camacho
estrenan su nuevo álbum titulado
“Recuerden mi estilo”.
El primer corte promocional de
dicho álbum es la canción “Del
negociante”.
El video de dicha canción ya
sobrepasó las 11 millones de
visitas en YouTube y el tema
“Kikil Caro”, incluido en el
nuevo álbum, tiene ya 600 mil
visitas en un mes, de acuerdo a
su disquera DEL Records.
El nuevo álbum de esta agrupación incluye composiciones de
compositores que han colaborado
con otros artistas como Banda
El Recodo, Luis Coronel, entre
otros.
La trayectoria de Los Plebes
del Rancho inició en 2013 cuando Ariel Camacho, quien tocaba
el requinto, formó un grupo musical con sus amigos Omar Burgos y César Iván Sánchez.
Ariel siempre se destacó por
su facilidad de tocar el requinto
y darle un toque especial a la
música campirana de su derredor
que la gente lo bautizó como
“La Tuyia”, que significa “Es
guitarra es tuya”.
Su talento fue descubierto por
el empresario Jesús Hernández
y el productor Jaime González.
Así formaron el proyecto Ariel
Camacho y Los Plebes del Rancho. En ese entonces, el grupo
estuvo conformado por César
(guitarra y segunda voz), Omar
(tuba) y Ariel (requinto y primera voz).
La agrupación se considera
como una de rancho, puesto que
les gusta la siembra y uno de sus
lugares favoritos es Culiacán.
En 2014 lanzaron su primera
producción titulada “El Karma”
bajo el sello DEL Records. Y
así obtuvieron su primera nominación al Latin Grammy en la
categoría de “Mejor Álbum de
Música Norteña”. Algunas canciones de este disco fueron “El
Karma”, “El Rey de Corazones”
y “Te metiste”.
Sin embargo, cuando la banda
empezaba a sonar fuerte en el
género de regional mexicano,
Ariel, de 22 años, falleció en
un accidente de coche el 25 de
febrero de 2015.
Aun así Omar, César y DEL
Records continuaron honrando
y celebrando a Ariel. Y como
tributo al fallecido cantante
la agrupación lleva ahora por
nombre Los Plebes del Rancho
de Ariel Camacho.
La disquera encontró en el
joven José Manuel López Castro,
de 18 años, al nuevo cantante de
la banda, el cual fue descubierto
por el CEO de la disquera al
revisar los videos que este subía
a Instagram interpretando las
canciones de Ariel.
José Manuel López se convirtió en el nuevo cantante, y
también toca el requinto.
Actualmente están nominados
para los Premios Billboard Latin
Music Awards 2016 en las categorías de: Tour del Año, Hot
Latin Song of The Year por “Te
metiste”, Hot Latin Label of The
Year, Top Latin Albums of the
Year, entre otros.

Alonso Martínez, un regiomontano que
ayudó a dar vida a “Un gran dinosaurio”

Disney Movies lanzará este
próximo 23 de febrero su más
reciente producción “The Good
Dinosaur” en Blu-Ray Combo
Pack, DVD y Digital HD.
Y con motivo de este lanzamiento, el regiomontano Alonso
Martínez, quien trabajó en el
Departamento de Personajes,
modelaje en 3D y rigging (articulación), platicó con La Prensa de
San Antonio sobre su experiencia
en esta película de Pixar.
Con 29 años de edad, Martínez
tiene ocho años de trabajar para
Pixar. Posee un Bachelor of Fine
Arts de Ringling School of Art
and Design de Sarasota, Florida.
“La verdad yo sabía que quería
trabajar haciendo arte y tecnología, pero no específicamente
animación para películas,” comentó Martinez. “Yo pensé,
cuando me estaba graduando de
secundaria, que me iba a hacer
arquitectura, pero todavía no
sabía que había una carrera para

animación; pero convencí a mi
papá que sí había una industria y
que sí había trabajo, y así decidí
estudiar eso en la universidad”.
Y desde entonces Martínez no
ha parado. Con ocho años trabajando para Pixar ha participado
en películas como “Up”, “Cars” e
“Inside out”. Actualmente, trabaja
en la producción de “Coco”, una
película de Disney sin fecha aún
de estreno.
En cuanto a “The Good Dinosaur”, Martínez trabajó en
modelaje en 3D (cuerpo, rostros y
cabezas) y articulación en los personajes de Arlo (el dinosaurio),
Spot (el niño) y Bucht (el T-Rex).
Irónicamente, aunque trabajo
tanto en el “Dinosaurio bueno”
(Arlo), el que le hizo más feliz
fue Butch (T-Rex), el dinosaurio
que parece malo.
Butch está descrito como un
Tyrannosaurus Rex robusto e
intimidante, lo que se refleja en
la cicatriz que le cruza el rostro.
Es un ranchero experimentado y
un profesional a la hora de arrear
ganado. Y alguien quien alienta
a sus hijos a aprender mediante
la acción y enfrentándose a situaciones peligrosas. Lo que disfruta
Butch es compartir historias de
batallas alrededor de una fogata
al final de un largo día de trabajo.
“Es un personaje muy interesante, muy complejo, ¡es el
macizo!”, lo describe Martínez.
El mensaje de “The Good Dinosaur” es sobre la poderosa experiencia de confrontar y vencer
los temores para descubrir quiénes somos realmente.
Y en el contexto de la hipótesis de qué hubiera pasado si el
asteroide que extinguió a los dinosaurios, hace millones de años,
no hubiera golpeado la Tierra y
la vida hubiera seguido su curso
se desarrolla la historia de Arlo.
Arlo es un apatosaurio joven
que se hace de un amigo humano,
el niño Spot. Y durante el viaje
que ambos emprenden a través de
un misterioso y duro paisaje, Arlo
aprende a confrontar sus miedos y
saber de lo que es capaz.
“Es un película de un niño creciendo, que tiene mensajes muy
lindos para una persona joven y
se me hace que sin duda, y siendo
honesto, es la película Pixar más
bonita que hemos hecho”, la define Martínez.

la Academia “Sanjay´s Super
Team”, escenas no incluidas y

“The Good Dinosaur” fue
dirigida por Peter Sohn. La voz
de Arlo fue puesta por Raymond

McDormand, la de su papá Jeffrey
Wright, la de Spot Steve Zahn y la
