Activities consisted of: relay races, a football toss, a hulahoop competition, and much more. At the end of the day, each student received a healthy snack to promote healthy lifestyle choices. Thank you to Tony Santilena, the faculty, staff, and parent volunteers for making this a successful day. ST. ANDREW CHURCH 32nd Annual Catholic Charities Volunteer St. Andrew Parish congratulates the 2016 Volunteer Awardees sponsored by Catholic Charities San Gabriel Region! - Angel & Elsa Chavez Elsa and Angel Chavez have been attending Saint Andrew Church for approximately 19 years. They were married here and have been part of the Saint Andrew Catholic Family & Marriage Group for over 10 years as zone coordinators. They currently serve as catechists for religious education as well as facilitators for parent formation classes. Devotion, true love, and appreciation for God have kept them serving at SA. - Martin & Aura Yuson We've served on the parish's Peace and Social Justice Ministry, helping organize activities such as the Fair Trade event, the Mass for Victims of Violence, and most recently, the Family Promise program in which our church provided temporary shelter and meals for homeless families on our parish campus. The Family Promise event has been a collaborative effort, working with many volunteers who helped prep the rooms for our guests, provided various resources, cooked meals, and served as evening hosts and overnight hosts. Last year, Aura and I facilitated a 27-week program called JustFaith, which serves as a spiritual formation for those interested in living out Catholic social teaching. It was a wonderful and challenging experience growing in community with other members of our formation group. We read many great books on Catholic social teachings. We also listened to live speakers, people of faith who have for many years served among the homeless individuals in L.A.'s skid row, organized the poor communities they live in, and one who had the unfortunate experience of being unjustly incarcerated. Through these experiences, we not only learned that we are called to OLD PASADENA confront injustice in our world, but we also recognized the deep need to rely on God through prayer in the midst of such immense social, psychological, economic, and spiritual challenges. -Shelly Morrison My family became members of St. Andrew in July 2015. I volunteered as a Eucharistic Minister to the sick and take communion to patients at the California Convalescent Home. My calling is also in the field of RCIA ministry and I have participated or directed R.C.I.A. for nearly the last 30 years in the diocese of San Jose, Orange, Boston, Leed’s (England), and in Diocese of Los Angeles since 2006. Since coming to the Diocese of Los Angeles in 2006, I have volunteered as RCIA Coordinator, Adult Faith Formation Coordinator, led Communion Services, and been a Eucharistic Minister to the sick, as well as started a Social Justice ministry and trained many others at St. Elizabeth’s Parish in Altadena. I am currently serving on the RCIA team here at St. Andrews under the direction of Deacon Fausto. -Linda & Mark Wolffe Mark and I were married 1982, and became members of St. Andrew Parish in 1988. Additionally, I went to St. Andrew High School prior to its closing, so I have been around the parish with my siblings since 1971. Our three children were “lifers” at St. Andrew School, attending from Kinder-8th grade, a span of 16 years. Our children served as altar servers from elementary school, into their high school years. We have been Eucharistic Ministers in the parish for almost 20 years and our youngest daughter pursued this ministry as well, and has been serving since 2014. We have both been involved in the Bach to Broadway Concert, I on the committee for a number of years and Mark making the lighting and music for the reception afterwards. Mark has been a part of the parish fiesta and the school’s Christmas concert for several years, providing electrical, lighting, and sound where needed. We both have served on school committees as well, I was a member of the School Board as well as the Technology Committee; and Mark a part of the school’s Facilities Committee. Our children made their sacraments at St. Andrew and we have lots of happy memories surrounded by this parish. We have made lifelong friends through our school and parish involvement. It has been our pleasure and honor to be a part of such a loving parish family. ST. ANDREW CHURCH -Alexis Salazar My name is Alexis Salazar and I am 24 years old. I work as an Instructional Aide for 1st and 3rd Grades at St. Andrew School in Pasadena. I am also a Resident Minister at Mount Saint Mary's University, where I lead a group of students in the development, strengthening, and growth of their spirituality. I also help them build community with one another through various activities we do together in the house, outings we go on, and conversations/ discussions we have on a variety of topics. I volunteer my time at St. Andrew Parish on Sundays by leading the Liturgy of the Word for Children at the 9:30am mass. I also am a Life Teen Core Member for Confirmation. I am one of the instructors for both First and Second Year Confirmation students. -Martha Solorio Married w/ 3 children. Parishioner of St. Andrew for 8 years, Holy Family for 14years. Have been involved with St. Vincent de Paul Society at St. Andrew and Mission Haiti at Holy Family. -Kimberly Johnson Was baptized as a baby but never really finished First Holy Communion or Confirmation until last year. Last Easter Vigil I completed my last two sacraments I needed to become a full fledged Catholic which I am so proud to be. I am going through the RCIA program now and I am helping Dn. Fausto and Dolores with the program. Other ministries I have been involved in have been: The Young Adult Group, Catechism, Life Teen, Children's Liturgy, Usher, and before I signed up to help with Catechism I was helping out on Saturdays with Saint Vincent de Paul. -Ellie Zwart Serves as parent member of St. Andrew School Board. Serves on Marketing Subcommittee, specifically involved in outreach to Pasadena-area preschools and parents of preschool age children to acquaint them with the benefits of the special Catholic education that St. Andrew offers. Volunteers regularly at St. Andrew School, serving lunch, playground monitoring, and OLD PASADENA helping with school day special events. Volunteers at the Parish Spring Fest. -Sofia Mota I was born and raised in Pasadena and was baptized made my 1st Communion, and Confirmation at St. Andrew. I attended St. Andrew School and volunteered at the convent as a student since girls were not permitted to be altar servers. In 2013, I enrolled my children just as the school was going through new leadership. I found out that a parent association was non-existent and many of the programs I enjoyed as a student were no longer in place. With the support of the principal, I helped form a new PTA and opened up a school library all before school had even started. I have helped form a decathlon team, a science lab, and many family activities, as well as organize room parent leadership. We reinstated a parish fiesta and a Christmas tree lighting event between the school and parish. I help the Saint Vincent De Paul center by promoting participation among the families with food & toy drives during the holidays. In 2014 I joined the school board as a parent representative and serve on the development and technology committees to help with the growing success of the school. I continue to serve as PTA president for the school and encourage parents to be involved in their child's education every day. -Sally Lee Sally helps out with Pastoral Care and takes communion to our local convalescent homes/ the sick. She’s also involved in the Filipino American Society of St. Andrew and volunteers her time in the Pastoral Center Chapel. -Joseph & Peggy Ehrbar The Ehrbar’s have been involved in the School Board for many years. Joseph Ehrbar runs the Operating Engineers Building and is gracious enough to let us the parking lot during special occasions. Thank you to our Parish Volunteers for all they do here at St. Andrew! St. Andrew’s Confirmation & Youth Ministry remind them of their retreat and the journey they are on toward receiving the sacrament of Confirmation. Parent’s Corner: More on what your teen is learning in One8 Confirmation! Year One: Confirmation Retreat 2016: I was truly blown away by the amount of maturity that our year one candidates displayed at our Confirmation Retreat and the meaningful conversations that our year two candidates shared last weekend! It was two days filled with love, faith and camaraderie. This was the first year we held our Confirmation Retreat’s off-site and it was such a joy to be able to use the St. Joseph Campus located at the Sacred Heart Retreat House is Alhambra, California, the students loved the facility! As they arrived bright and early on the morning of their retreat, some were nervous, some were just plain tired and most were hungry! After having breakfast in the garden, nerves were calmed, bellies were full and their hearts were ready for the day. The goal was simple, to bring each one of our students closer to God. The theme of our retreat was based on the seven heavenly virtues; we took time to break down each virtue and relate it to real life situations but the best parts of the day were when we broke into our small groups to have meaningful discussions on how we identify with each virtue and how we can live out these virtues in our lives as an extension of the grace they receive in the sacraments. We heard testimonies and songs chosen by our Core Team. Our team really poured their hearts and souls into their talks and we are so lucky to have such a great group of leaders. It all came together when we celebrated Mass led by Fr. Paul which sealed their hearts with the message, that living out these virtues is essential to their spiritual lives and in our world, it is no less than heroic. I want to extend a special thank you to Fr. Paul for walking on this journey with our teens and even spending his Birthday with us last weekend. Each student left with a gift, an all saints bracelet, to facebook.com/ standrewconfirmation YM_standrew The last class of the year is on Sunday, April 24th from 6:00-8:00pm. Year Two: Confirmation Mass Rehearsal is on Thursday, May 12th at 6:00pm in the Church. Sponsors must also attend! Confirmation Mass is set for Saturday, May 14th at 5:00pm.
