Taylor came for an operation at Mattel Children’s Hospital
UCLA. She had a lot of questions about her operation.
You probably will, too. This booklet will answer some of
those questions and help you get ready for your surgery.

Day of Surgery El día de la cirugía
Arrival and check in.
On the day of your surgery, you and your family will
come to the entrance to the hospital and check in at the
Admissions Office.
When it’s your turn, an escort will take you and your family
to the 2nd floor PTU (Pre-procedure Treatment Unit),
where doctors and nurses take care of patients who are
coming in for surgery.
Llegada y registro.
El día de tu cirugía, tú y tu familia vendrán a la entrada del
hospital y se registrarán en la oficina de admisiones.
Cuando sea tu turno, un acompañante te llevará a ti y a tu
familia a la PTU (la unidad de tratamiento preparatorio) del
2º piso, donde los médicos y las enfermeras atienden a los

Check Up in the Exam Room Revisión médica en la sala de examen
Your PTU exam.
In the PTU, you’ll discover there are a lot of rooms, gurneys
(beds on wheels), and hospital staff to help you. A nurse may
help you get ready for surgery by having you put on a gown and
an ID band with your name on it. Then the nurse will check
your temperature and blood pressure, and listen to your heart.
Tu examen en la PTU.
En la PTU descubrirás que hay muchas salas, camillas (camas
con ruedas) y personal del hospital para ayudarte. Una enfermera
te podría ayudar a prepararte para la cirugía haciendo que te
pongas una bata y una pulsera de identificación con tu nombre.
Luego la enfermera te tomará la temperatura, la presión arterial
y escucharán los latidos del corazón.
Child Life Specialists help you understand your surgery.
You may see a Child Life Specialist before surgery.
A Child Life Specialist can answer any questions you may
have and will help you feel less nervous about your surgery.
Las especialistas en vida infantil te ayudan a
entender tu cirugía.
Quizás veas a una especialista en vida infantil antes de la cirugía.
Esta persona puede contestar las preguntas que tengas y te
ayudará a tranquilizarte con respecto a tu cirugía.

Visiting with doctors before your surgery.

Several doctors may come to visit you in the PTU room. You
may meet with your surgeon and your anesthesiologist. The
anesthesiologist is a doctor who stays with you during the entire
surgery and gives you anesthesia, a medicine given through a
mask or IV, to put your body to sleep. You will not feel anything
during the surgery. The anesthesiologist will stop giving you
anesthesia after the surgery is finished so your body will wake up.

Visita de los médicos antes de tu cirugía.
Es posible que varios médicos te visiten en la sala de la PTU.
Quizás te vayan a ver el cirujano y el anestesiólogo. El anestesiólogo
es un médico que se queda contigo durante toda la cirugía y te
pone la anestesia, una medicina administrada con una mascarilla
o por vía intravenosa para que tu cuerpo se quede dormido.
No sentirás nada durante la cirugía. El anestesiólogo dejará

Operating Room La sala de operaciones
It’s time!
In the Operating Room…
When it’s time, you’ll be taken to the Operating Room for your
surgery. Your doctors and nurses will come with you, and your
family will be waiting for you in a special room during your surgery.
When you arrive in the Operating Room, you’ll be moved to
another bed.
¡Llegó la hora!
Cuando llegue el momento, te llevarán a la sala de operaciones
para la cirugía. Tus médicos y enfermeras irán contigo, y tu familia
se quedará esperándote en una sala especial durante tu cirugía.
You’ll notice bright lights and special equipment to take care of
you. Once you lie down on the bed, the anesthesiologist will place
a mask over your nose and mouth that will help you breathe.
The anesthesia will make your body feel very sleepy so you don’t
see, hear or feel anything during your surgery.
En la sala de operaciones…
Cuando llegues a la sala de operaciones te pasarán a otra cama.
Notarás luces brillantes y máquinas especiales que usarán para
cuidar de ti. Una vez que te tiendas en la cama, el anestesiólogo
te pondrá una mascarilla sobre la nariz y la boca que te ayudará
a respirar. La anestesia hará que tu cuerpo se quede dormido,
para que no veas, oigas ni sientas nada durante tu cirugía.

Maddie’s Room (Family Waiting Room)

Maddie’s Room is where your family will wait for you while you’re
in surgery. While they are waiting, a nurse will come to tell them
what is happening and answer any questions they may have.

Recovery Room (PACU) La sala de recuperación (PACU)
Your surgery is done!
After your surgery, you’ll wake up in the PACU (Post Anesthesia
Care Unit). You may wake up with a blood pressure cuff or pulse
oximeter, which are things that will help the nurses take care of
you. Your family will be brought in to see you, and nurses and
doctors will help you if there’s anything you need or if you are
feeling uncomfortable. Some patients go home after surgery and
others stay overnight in the hospital. If you are staying overnight,
an escort will take you to your hospital room.
¡Ya terminó la cirugía!
Después de la cirugía, te despertarás en la PACU (la unidad
de cuidado post-anestesia). Es posible que te despiertes con
un manguito de presión o un pulsioxímetro, que son aparatos
que ayudarán a las enfermeras a cuidar de ti. Trearán a tu
familia para que vayan a verte. Las enfermeras y los médicos
te ayudarán si necesitas algo o si sientes alguna molestia.

player for me and a desk. My mom stayed in the hospital with me
and slept on the couch that pulled out into a bed.”

The people who took care of me were very
friendly and helpful.

Nurses, doctors and other really nice people will come to your
hospital room to take care of you. They’ll tell you their names
and what they are going to do to make you feel better. A Child
Life Specialist can bring you toys and DVDs, or take you to
one of the playrooms, if it is okay with your doctor.
Vendrán a tu habitación del hospital para cuidar de ti enfermeras,
médicos y otras personas muy amables. Te dirán sus nombres
y lo que van a hacer para que te sientas mejor. Una especialista
en vida infantil te puede traer juguetes y discos DVD, o llevarte
a una de las salas de juegos, si tu médico lo permite.

When your doctors agree that your body has healed enough
to go home, you’ll say goodbye to your doctors, nurses,
Child Life Specialists and other staff you met during your
time at Mattel Children’s Hospital UCLA.

lo suficiente para que vayas a casa, te despedirás de tus médicos,
enfermeras, las especialistas en vida infantil y el personal del
