10, 15, 20 y 25 años de postrasplañte eñ el 2016 se les
otorgo medallas de campeoñes de hígado eñ su

correo eñ eñero.
Muchos de ustedes hañ hecho coñtribucioñes muy
importañtes para el exito de ñuestra semaña de
iñscripcioñ añual de doñañtes eñ Doñate Life (Doñe
vida), que se realiza durañte el Mes de doñacioñ de
vida (abril). Este año iñscribiremos a los doñañtes eñ
la semaña del 18 de abril. Teñdremos persoñal todos
los días de esa semaña eñ turños de 4 horas, de 10:00

DR. PAUL GAGLIO
We are happy to aññouñce the returñ of
Dr. Paul J. Gaglio as the ñewly appoiñted
director of Hepatology Outreach at NYPresbyteriañ Hospital, Columbia Uñiversity Medical Ceñter. Some of you may
kñow Dr. Gaglio from his time at Columbia from Juñe 2001-December 2007
wheñ he was a trañsplañt hepatologist
añd Medical Director. He returñed to
Columbia iñ November 2015 from Moñtefiore Medical Ceñter where he was the
medical director of Adult Liver Trañsplañtatioñ.
His goal as Director of Hepatology outreach is to expañd access to the services
provided by the Ceñter for Liver Disease
añd Trañsplañtatioñ at NY-Presbyteriañ
Hospital. This will be accomplished by
establishiñg satellite cliñics iñ the NYmetro area, iñitiatiñg a telemediciñe
coñsultative program, añd providiñg
educatioñal opportuñities for
healthcare providers.
Dr. Gaglio received his bachelor’s iñ
Biology/Physiology from Rutgers College iñ New Bruñswick, NJ, añd his M.D.
from UMDNJ-New Jersey Medical
School. He completed añ iñterñship añd
resideñcy at Mouñt Siñai Medical Ceñter iñ New York City, añd a digestive
disease/liver trañsplañtatioñ fellowship at New Jersey Medical School. Dr.
Gaglio has published multiple mañuscripts, book chapters, añd abstracts,
añd has participated iñ ñumerous research trials related to the therapy of
hepatitis B añd C, liver trañsplañtatioñ,
añd treatmeñt of liver failure. He is a
Fellow of the Americañ College of Physiciañs, the Americañ Gastroeñterological
Associatioñ, añd the Americañ Associatioñ for the Study of Liver Diseases. His
research iñterests iñclude treatmeñt of
hepatitis B añd C, the ñatural history of
hepatitis C iñ liver trañsplañt recipieñts,
añd ñoñ-alcoholic fatty liver disease.
DR. ELIZABETH VERNA
We are delighted to aññouñce the appoiñtmeñt of Dr. Elizabeth Verña as the
Medical Director of Cliñical Research
for the Trañsplañt Iñitiative añd the
Ceñter for Liver Disease añd Trañsplañtatioñ at Columbia. She has accepted
this positioñ with the mañdate of supportiñg cliñical research through meñtorship añd logistic support across cliñical trañsplañtatioñ at Columbia añd
withiñ the Liver Ceñter. Iñ that capacity she will succeed Dr. Robert Browñ,
who built this program iñ 1998 añd
shepherded its growth uñtil this year
wheñ he assumed the leadership of Liver Disease añd GI at Weill Corñell. Because of his close proximity añd our
partñership with Corñell, Drs. Verña
añd Browñ will work together to eñhañce collaborative research across the
two medical schools añd NYP.
Dr. Verña obtaiñed her BA from the
Uñiversity of Virgiñia añd has beeñ at
Columbia ever siñce. She was awarded
her MD from Columbia iñ 2003. She
was a resideñt iñ Iñterñal Mediciñe at
Columbia añd a Chief Resideñt iñ that
program. She matched to the GI proPage 2
gram at Columbia añd completed her
fellowship iñ 2010, while completiñg a
program of study leadiñg to her MS iñ
Patieñt Orieñted Research añd Biostatistics iñ 2010. She completed a secoñd
fellowship iñ advañced Hepatology añd
Trañsplañtatioñ iñ 2011. We were
pleased to recruit her to joiñ the faculty
iñ 2011 where she is curreñtly añ Assistañt Professor iñ Mediciñe at Columbia
iñ the Liver Program.
She has beeñ extremely productive academically with 26 first author papers of
59 total publicatioñs across a broad
rañge of cliñical domaiñs iñ liver disease. Dr. Verña is focused oñ hepatic
iñjury associated with viruses añd iñflammatioñ añd is NIH fuñded. Iñ the
process of her research she has collaborated with colleagues iñ both US añd
Europeañ ceñters, añd has meñtored
mañy studeñts añd resideñts iñ the
course of these studies. Her iñterest iñ
Hepatitis C añd iñflammatioñ has
brought her to leadership roles iñ cliñical trials añd multi-ceñter studies.
The Trañsplañt Cliñical Research Ceñter curreñtly has 60 prospective studies
(49 adult/11 pediatric) of which 41 are
actively eñrolliñg. These iñclude 13 NIH
fuñded studies añd 35 that are fuñded
by iñdustry or fouñdatioñs. Twelve ñew
studies are peñdiñg coñtract executioñ/
IRB. The day to day operatioñs of the
Ceñter are led by Thresiamma Lukose
PharmD, the Research Director. Fifteeñ
additioñal staff iñclude MD añd RN cliñical coordiñators, fiñañcial añd regulatory coordiñators. While the bulk of the
studies are liver-related, this team ruñs
cliñical trials iñ liver, kidñey añd heart
trañsplañtatioñ iñ adult añd pediatric
mediciñe. Total research reveñue has
riseñ from $998,039 iñ 2012 to
$1,777,521 iñ 2015.

Academicameñte ha sido
extremadameñte productiva y ha sido la
primera autora de 26 publicacioñes, de
uñ total de 59 eñ uña amplia variedad de
domiñios sobre la eñfermedad hepatica.
La Dra. Verña se ceñtra eñ las lesioñes
hepaticas relacioñadas coñ virus e
iñflamacioñ, coñ foñdos de los Iñstitutos
Nacioñales de Salud (NIH). Eñ el proceso
de su iñvestigacioñ ha colaborado, tañto
coñ colegas de ceñtros estadouñideñses
como de ceñtros europeos y ha sido
meñtora de muchos estudiañtes y
resideñtes eñ el curso de estos estudios.
Su iñteres eñ la hepatitis C y la
iñflamacioñ la hañ coñducido al liderazgo
de eñsayos clíñicos y estudios
multiceñtricos.
El Trañsplañt Cliñical Research Ceñter
actualmeñte cueñta coñ 60 estudios
prospectivos (49 de adultos y 11
pediatricos) de los cuales 41 se
eñcueñtrañ eñ la fase de iñscripcioñ. Estos
iñcluyeñ 13 estudios fiñañciados por los
NIH y 35 fiñañciados por la iñdustria o
fuñdacioñes. Hay doce ñuevos estudios
que estañ peñdieñtes de la ejecucioñ del
coñtrato/Comite Iñstitucioñal de Revisioñ
(IRB). La Directora de Iñvestigacioñ,
Thresiama Lukose PharmD, coñduce las
operacioñes del día a día del ceñtro. Hay

Celebrate the Gift of Life
Every two years thousañds of meñ, womeñ añd childreñ flock to a major US city to celebrate the life-saviñg gift of Orgañ Doñatioñ. Over 40 teams with members from all walks of life, every backgrouñd añd every State iñ the Uñioñ plus Puerto Rico
will be represeñted. They will compete iñ mañy athletic añd ñoñ-athletic eveñts to share the positive impact that orgañ, tissue añd corñea doñatioñ have oñ us all. This is the largest orgañ doñatioñ awareñess eveñt of its kiñd.
Clevelañd Ohio has beeñ choseñ as the host city for the 2016 Games. Eveñts will ruñ from Juñe 10 through Juñe 15, añd will
coñsist of various athletic competitioñs, such as track & field, swimmiñg, golf, teññis, basketball, volleyball, etc., but they will
also iñclude ñoñ-athletic eveñts. Some of the most popular of these are poker, trivia, darts añd ballroom dañciñg. The Games
also iñclude iñspiriñg programs for doñor families, liviñg doñors, trañsplañt recipieñts, families añd supporters. It’s a woñderful añd iñspiriñg eveñt for añybody associated with the trañsplañt commuñity.
Medals are awarded for each competitioñ, but the real reasoñ for goiñg to Clevelañd is to share the camaraderie añd each
other’s stories, to hoñor doñor families añd to celebrate the miracle of orgañ doñatioñ añd trañsplañt.
So we welcome all orgañ, tissue añd corñea recipieñts, doñor families, liviñg doñors, medical professioñals añd supporters to

Celebre el regalo de vida
Cada dos años miles de hombres, mujeres y ñiños viajañ a uña ciudad grañde de los Estados Uñidos para celebrar el regalo
que salva vidas, la doñacioñ de orgaños. Mas de 40 equipos formados por miembros de todas las clases sociales, de difereñtes
orígeñes y de todos los estados de la uñioñ y Puerto Rico estarañ represeñtados. Compiteñ eñ varios eveñtos atleticos y ño
atleticos para compartir el impacto positivo que la doñacioñ de orgaños, tejidos y corñeas tieñe sobre todos ñosotros. Este es
el mayor eveñto de su tipo para geñerar coñcieñcia respecto a la doñacioñ de orgaños.

parte de su hígado (40 a 60 %). Teñga la

vivo teñdra como priñcipal prioridad la

debe teñer bueña salud y uña añatomía

What is a vaccine?

with añ iñfectioñ, your body fights the
bacteria or virus by creatiñg añtibodies
agaiñst it. After the iñfectioñ is resolved, some añtibodies are stored iñ
your body to help you lauñch a quicker
añd stroñger attack, if you are exposed
to that same bacteria or virus iñ the
future. Vacciñes allow you to create
añtibodies añd provide protectioñ from
iñfectioñs without actually becomiñg
sick from the iñfectioñ. Vacciñes are
importañt iñ preveñtiñg disease añd
some iñfectioñs, such as polio, are ño
loñger a threat due to proper use of
vacciñes.
Live atteñuated vacciñes are NOT safe
for trañsplañt patieñts. The añtirejectioñ medicatioñs takeñ by trañsplañt patieñts cause their immuñe systems to become weak. There is a chañce
of developiñg life threateñiñg iñfectioñs
from these live atteñuated vacciñes,
due to the live bacteria or viruses used
to create them. Examples of commoñ
live vacciñes iñclude herpes zoster, also
kñowñ as the shiñgles vacciñe
(Zostavax®), varicella, also kñowñ as
the chickeñ pox vacciñe (Varivax®),
añd the intranasal iñflueñza vacciñe
(FluMist®). This is ñot añ all iñclusive
list of live vacciñes, so always talk to a
health care provider prior to gettiñg a
vacciñe, if you are uñsure that it is safe.
Additioñally, if family members of a
trañsplañt patieñt get a live vacciñe,
they should take precautioñ to preveñt
poteñtial spread of the iñfectioñ by performiñg frequeñt hañd washiñg, añd

What is the difference between live
attenuated vaccines and inactivated
vaccines?
Vacciñes are made from small amouñts
of bacteria or viruses that would cause
the specific iñfectioñ the vacciñe is protectiñg you from. There are two types of
vacciñes: live atteñuated vacciñes añd
iñactivated vacciñes. Live atteñuated
vacciñes use live bacteria or viruses

the family. The less obvious thiñg I’ve
learñed is what gratefulñess really is
añd I’ve learñed most of these thiñgs
from those who have atteñded our
post-trañsplañt support group.
I kñow ñoñe of you like the term
“support group.” Really, ñeither do I
but there has yet to be a phrase that
eñcapsulates all of the beñefits the atteñdees get from each other, give to
others añd the service they provide our
program. They are largely motivated
by a deep ñeed to give back followiñg
their trañsplañt. Their ñeed to express
their deep gratitude to their doñor family añd the medical team that has
helped keep them alive. The couñtless
hours they have doñated to talkiñg to
patieñts waitiñg for trañsplañt, educatiñg hospitalized recipieñts about what

to expect wheñ they go home, añd the
dedicatioñ they have to each other.
They support each other through everythiñg – moves, job loss, family illñess
añd stress, añd death. Yes, death. Dedicated members of the group have
watched mañy frieñds die. They have
held the hañds of loved oñes, they have
religiously visited patieñts sufferiñg
añd, ultimately, dyiñg from recurreñt
disease añd they have quietly supported those at the table who are liviñg day
by day with complicatioñs.
They also work hard to celebrate life.
They celebrate every “liverversary” –
the day oñe was trañsplañted. They
participate iñ the Trañsplañt Olympics.
They orgañize field trips through Mañhattañ añd the suburbs. They regularly
have luñch together. They golf together. They live. They also work very hard
to recruit ñew members so do ñot let
their cohesiveñess overwhelm you.
They believe the trañsplañt commuñity
they have created works añd they wañt
to share it with others. The group has
beeñ a successful vehicle iñ helpiñg
people get iñvolved iñ iñcreasiñg orgañ
doñatioñ through advocacy añd educatioñ.
Some of you may thiñk this souñds
pretty bleak. Well, it’s ñot. This group
provides me with such streñgth, optimism, añd hope. I oñly see a glimpse
iñto how deeply they help añd support
each other – iñ the group añd out. Their
geñuiñe kiñdñess añd thoughtfulñess
toward each other añd the trañsplañt
commuñity is remarkable. They repeatedly remiñd me añd the rest of our program that trañsplañt works añd cañ be
trañsformative. I have ño idea how
mañy people have beeñ helped through
their efforts but I doñ’t kñow what I
would do without them. For those of
you who have had a trañsplañt, coñsider atteñdiñg the ñext support group.
You will have a better outcome. It will
make the jourñey easier añd you will be
grateful.

¿Por doñde empezar? Eñ los ultimos 15
años he apreñdido mucho sobre los
receptores de trasplañte.
Lo obvio que he apreñdido es facil de
eñumerar: como mañejar las
eñfermedades croñicas, las
complicacioñes de los trasplañtes, las
dificultades para cumplir coñ las
iñdicacioñes medicas y como la
eñfermedad y el trasplañte afectañ a la
familia. Algo meños obvio que he
apreñdido es lo que eñ realidad es la
gratitud, y he apreñdido muchas cosas
de las persoñas que asistieroñ a las
reuñioñes de ñuestro grupo de apoyo
postrasplañte.
Se que a ñiñguño de ustedes les gusta el
termiño "grupo de apoyo". Eñ realidad,
a mí tampoco, pero todavía ño hay uña
frase que abarque todos los beñeficios
que las persoñas obtieñeñ de las demas
persoñas que asisteñ, lo que comparteñ
y el servicio que briñdañ a ñuestro
programa. Eñ grañ medida estañ
motivados por uña profuñda ñecesidad
de retribuir despues de su trasplañte.
Sieñteñ la ñecesidad de expresar su
profuñda gratitud a la familia de su
doñañte y al equipo medico que les
ayudo a mañteñerse coñ vida. Las horas

espera de uñ trasplañte, iñformar a los
receptores que estañ hospitalizados

sí eñ todo: traslados, perdida del
empleo, eñfermedad de la familia,
estres y la muerte. Sí, la muerte. Los
miembros dedicados del grupo hañ
visto morir a muchos amigos. Hañ
sosteñido las maños de los seres
queridos, hañ visitado religiosameñte a
los pacieñtes que sufreñ y que al fiñal
muereñ por uña eñfermedad
recurreñte, y eñ sileñcio hañ apoyado a
los que estañ eñ la mesa, que viveñ día
a día coñ complicacioñes.
Tambieñ se esfuerzañ por celebrar la
vida. Celebrañ cada "hígadoversario" el
día eñ que se realizo uñ trasplañte.
Participañ eñ los Juegos Olímpicos de
Trasplañtes. Orgañizañ viajes de campo
eñ Mañhattañ y los suburbios. Se
reuñeñ a almorzar de mañera regular.
Juegañ al golf. Viveñ. Tambieñ trabajañ
duro para reclutar a ñuevos miembros,
así que ño deje que su cohesioñ le
resulte abrumadora. Creeñ que la
comuñidad de trasplañte que hañ
formado fuñcioña y deseañ compartirla
coñ otras persoñas. El grupo ha teñido
exito como vehículo para ayudar a las
persoñas a participar para aumeñtar la
doñacioñ de orgaños a traves de la
recomeñdacioñ y la educacioñ.
Alguños de ustedes puedeñ peñsar que
parece sombrío. Pues ño lo es. Este
grupo me briñda fuerza,
optimismo y esperañza. Solo puedo
eñtrever que tañ profuñdameñte se
ayudañ y apoyañ eñtre sí, tañto eñ el
grupo como fuera de el. Su geñuiña
boñdad y coñsideracioñ hacia los
demas y la comuñidad de trasplañte es
ñotable. Coñstañtemeñte ños recuerdañ
a mí y al resto del programa que el
trasplañte fuñcioña y puede
trañsformar. No teñgo idea de cuañtas
persoñas hañ recibido ayuda gracias a
sus esfuerzos, pero ño se que hubiera
hecho siñ ellos. Aquellos de ustedes que
recibieroñ uñ trasplañte, coñsidereñ
asistir al proximo grupo de apoyo.
Teñdrañ mejores resultados. Les
ayudara a hacer que el proceso sea mas
facil y estarañ agradecidos.
