Aerospace business focus T he move to Sevilla by Airbus Defence & Space of the A400M aircraft programme management and the expansion of facilities of San Pablo and the FAL with the rental of a new hangar of 6,000 m2 reinforce the status of Andalusia as global epicenter of this programme, and in general as effervescent focus of European aerospace business. But this is not the only injection of optimism that we have recently received. The delivery of the A350-1000 belly fairing by Alestis, the announcement of the extension of Aerópolis and the signing of the contract between Aircell and Airbus for the A320neo developed in the Bay of Cadiz CBC - the other major axis of the Andalusian aerospace pole - are other positive news which measure the thrust of the Andalusian aerospace cluster. We have an increasingly stronger and more cohesive cluster, showing signs of greater maturity and strength. The continued increase in turnover and competitiveness throughout a decade, in particular the growth achieved in 2014 with the creation of one A+A thousand new jobs, and the gradual internationalization of sales of the Andalusian auxiliary companies confirm that the sector is progressing in the right direction. In 2016, ADM will provide another great showcase for the international projection of the image of the Andalusian cluster, as well as an opportunity to meet and exchange with the major players in the aerospace industry. We must be very careful to take advantage of all possibilities of this great international event may arise, and certainly keep working on the same way that has reported such good results so far. We are living in a big world, with very powerful and larger competitors, but through specialization and improved manufacturing processes to a more modern and more advanced industry, more automated with manufacturing and integration technologies more productive; and diversification into higher value-added products, such as systems, airborne and ground-based, related to an ever more electric aircraft, we can keep on growing. The Airbus plant in Puerto Real has delivered lateral boxes of the first A3501000 horizontal tail plane The Airbus plant in Puerto Real (Cádiz) has achieved a new milestone in the A350 programme, as it has delivered the lateral boxes of the first horizontal tail plane (HTP) of the A350 in its version 1000. This milestone was announced in mid-October during an information meeting with the plant manager, Antonio Rueda, and the A350 programme leaders at the site, who stressed that the manufacturing process of these pieces has placed Puerto Real plant in the front row of global technological innovation. So far, all parts delivered of the A350 were from 900 family, and with the delivery of the HTP lateral boxes begins the 1000 family process (the second version developed by Airbus of the three that make up the programme). Rueda said the A350 “has been a success that is the triumph of this factory,, and that the Cádiz site will rise deliveries from 7 aircraft per month to 13, thanks to a doubling of its assembly line resulting of the expansion of its facilities made in recent months. This increase in the rate of production and delivery of parts will imply more staff for the A350, which in three years will grow from the current 70 to 170 workers, although this increase will be based mainly on redeployment and possible further additions according to the needs. To this new it has joined the rent of a new hangar of 6,000 square meters, next to the Flight Test Centre also located in the FAL, addressed to maintenance and modernization tasks. There was a lot of speculation about the negative impact that the accident occurred last May could have for the Andalusian aerospace sector, and its participation in the programme of the most advanced military aircraft in the world. But time puts things in place and the facts speak for themselves. Far from losing weight, Andalusia has won, and is confirmed and increased its expectations for the future in this programme, and in the international aerospace context. The decision to move the A400M office from Toulouse to Sevilla has been a real breath of optimism to the Andalusian aerospace sector. Institutions, companies and unions have welcomed with great satisfaction this process that started last summer. Neither the bet on Andalusia has been affected by the accident of the A400M in May, nor the rate of production and assembly of military aircraft. Although after the accident flight tests and flights of the aircraft into manufacture stopped during two months, production has remained, has continued to work normally and Airbus maintains the objective of delivering between 13 and 17 aircraft at the end of this year, according to Airbus. So far in 2015, Airbus delivered to customers a total of seven military aircraft. The last one took place in September, when UK received its seventh unit of the programme. It should be recalled that the first flight of the A400M took place in late 2009, in 2011 series production was launched, and since then the production line has increased gradually (ram up). Airbus DS has accelerated the assembly cycle in recent months, from 12 to 9 days the frequency of movement of the components of the plane from an assembly station to another. Seville becomes - in the words of the President in Spain, Fernando Alonso - the center of gravity of the programme and consequently strengthens our community as the epicenter of the large aerospace business in southern Europe, the third European pole and in growth. The news is positive itself, but can also be accompanied by new jobs in Seville to meet the needs of this new office. By now, Airbus D&S has moved about 100 engineers and technicians involved in the programme, which could increase with new hires if workload grows for this A400M decision-making centre, including technical, management and operational staff. The European manufacturer intends to incorporate new employees in the remainder of the year depending on industrial needs, although the current phase of the programme does not expect large numbers of recruitment. However, it is expected to create indirect employment through the Andalusian auxiliary industry, which will be also strengthened with this transfer and location of the A400M management and engineering office in Seville. >> A+A The President of the Junta de Andalucía, Susana Díaz, visits the FAL In her first official act after maternity leave, the President of Andalusia, Susana Díaz, visited the A400M FAL accompanied by the President of Airbus in Spain, Fernando Alonso. During this visit, Susana Diaz thanked Airbus to “redoubled its commitment” to Andalusia and invited the European aerospace giant to think about locating new infrastructures or transfer to other workplaces to the community. In addition, she stressed that the Andalusian government plans to imminently expand in fifty hectares the Aerospace Technology Park in Andalusia, Aeropolis, located in front of the Airbus DS factory in eville, where the military transport aircraft is assembled. She also said the government will continue to rely on a “key strategic sector” for the region, such as aeronautical, which not stopped growing in the last decade and in 2014 generated a thousand new jobs in Andalusia. and the FAL facilities by renting a new hangar of 6,000 square meters for maintenance and modernization tasks related to the assembly of the A400M. This hangar, owned by Greenmark SL –a collaborating company with the Spanish Air Force- is located in the Real Maestranza de Aviación of Seville, has the capacity for one position of aircraft, and now serves in San Pablo plant after a rental agreement valid until 2022. The new work area includes 11,000 square meters of platform that have been transferred from the Air Force. These new 17,000 square meters are added to the 600,000 that has all the factory, including hangars, offices, open spaces, parks, etc... Its addition involves, in the words of the company itself, a “significant expansion” for the A400M Final Assembly Line. Airbus DS already counts in the north area of San Pablo with a Center for Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) dedicated to light and medium family models, as the CN235 or C295. The newly rented hangar in the south area of San Pablo Sur will serve exclusively to the A400M. Against the speculation and interested information that circulated after the unfortunate accident last May, these two decisions of Airbus represent a very positive boost to the participation of the Andalusian aerospace cluster in the programme. Andalusia not loses but gets more weight. The President of Airbus in Spain, Fernando Alonso, stated “here is the programming area, the assembly line, the Flight Test Centre, Training Centre and A400M Delivery Centre, so we can say that Seville is the center of gravity of the programme, and we hope that success in the A400M will have an impact on more qualified and lasting jobs” said the manager, who even opened the door to the possibility of bringing new facilities to Andalusia given the experience, technological capability and infrastructure available into community. Herrera “The Andalusian aerospace sector is an essential partner for Airbus Defence & Space” A+A ENTREVISTA A+A 25 The Director of Airbus DS San Pablo facilities (Seville) analyzes in this interview some of the latest topical issues of the company, as the recent transfer of management of the A400M programme to Seville, “a step with which we reinforce the FAL and we give a new boost to the development of the programme and the capabilities of the aircraft”. Rafael Nogueras explains that this will not entail new work packages for the auxiliary industry, but it is a great support to the Andalusian aeronautical pole, “as it will strengthen the position of the companies that collaborate with Airbus DS”. In this regard highlights the high quality level of the Andalusian auxiliary companies, but they need a greater financial muscle and increased engineering and production capabilities, as Nogueras explains. >> What will mean the transfer of management of the A400M programme from Toulouse to San Pablo Centre, both for the company and also for the Andalusian plant? The transfer of management of the A400M programme from Toulouse to Sevilla is a question that had been discussed internally in the past and it was decided at the beginning of this year. With this move we reinforce the FAL and at the same time we give a new boost to the development of the programme, namely the development of the aircraft capabilities. The direction of the programme has brought about a hundred engineers who are already developing their work at our facilities in San Pablo. In this way, our Sevillian facilities are further reinforced by the presence of the programme management and facilitate the relationship with our customers who come to receive the aircraft. And for the auxiliary industry of the community? How it will impact on the Andalusian cluster companies? This decision does not affect the Andalusian auxiliary industry while recruiting work packages is not related to this transfer. Some media have published about hiring people to strengthen the factory of San Pablo and the FAL of the A400M in Seville. How many people have already incorporated and what are the deadlines for the programme to be strengthened to address the increase in aircraft deliveries to customers? Some media have published this figure, but the truth is that is not correct. We are making recruitments throughout the year depending on the needs of industry, but we are now in a phase of the programme which no longer requires recruitment figures of this magnitude. On the other hand, the programme continues to strengthen with each new delivery and entry into service of the aircraft in the air forces of our customers. We continue to increase the production rate according to the planning and strengthen the industrialization of the aircraft. Precisely you are also responsible for the A400M Delivery Centre. What is the final aircraft delivery forecast for this year? And for 2016? Will be delivered the first aircraft to Spain in May next year? This year we intend to deliver 13 aircraft to our customers. Although this figure could increase to 17 units, although this depends on the results of a flight test campaign we are doing now. We are currently working on industrial planning for 2016 and we will publish it later, once is determined. How do you assess the role of the Andalusian aerospace sector in the A400M programme and the rest of the Airbus DS military transport programmes? The Andalusian aerospace sector is an essential partner for Airbus Defence & Space. We are very proud of the high quality level provided by our partners of the auxiliary industry and how they have contributed creating jobs of quality in companies that grow and work to be at the technological excellence required by our programmes, both the A400M and our transport aircraft medium-sized and lightweight, the C295 and CN235. But it is also true that our supply chain is too fragmented. We need the auxiliary industry companies count on greater financial muscle and which provide greater engineering and manufacturing capabilities. What are the expectations for this 2015 and for the coming years with respect to the other programmes or activities taking place in the plant? C295, CN-235 MRO Center, etc. We are very active in other business areas such as you mentioned. This year we have already delivered 12 mediumsized aircraft and we are planning to deliver 19 more along this year. The activity in our MRO Services and in our International Training Centre is also having very positive results in this exercise. In these two lines of business we expect to continue increasing the activity in the coming years thanks to the entry into service of the A400M fleets for our customers. Your company says it is working to bring new business to the facilities of Seville and Andalusia, as regards the UAV's. What would be and what would 27 mean for San Pablo Centre and the auxiliary industry? At this time there is no consolidated plan in this regard. What we have said is that in case of the company decided to bring new business lines, Seville is ready for it thanks to its exceptional resources both in facilities such as human capital. Airbus and AENA agreed to the extension of industrial activity in Seville Airport, adjoining to San Pablo factory, mainly to expand its activity in MRO. What is the current situation of the project? It is not about an extension of our industrial activity but maintaining and consolidating the existing one. Our MRO Services Centre has a very good activity on the grounds located at the north of the runway of Seville Airport. Additionally, as discussed above, the entry into service of the new hangar for maintenance and modernization of A400M fleets of our customers represents an increase in MRO activity that we had already planned for this phase of the programme. The Training Centre celebrates in 2015 five years after its launch. What is your balance of its history and what are the forecasts handled facing the increased activity, particularly in the training of pilots and technicians of the A400M? The International Training Center is having an outstanding performance. We have full-flight simulators, as well as all partial simulators required for all platforms for the most effective instruction of our customers. More than a thousand students per year pass through these facilities to enable crews to fly our products, as well as to instruct their technicians in performing maintenance of the platforms. Not only A400M, but also of our family transport medium in size. Regarding A400M, we have high activity in the crew training and technicians. A+A EN ENTREVISTA PORTADA A+A 31 The Consul General of Portugal in Andalusia, Jorge Monteiro, explains in this interview the current situation of the aviation industry in Portugal, its main actors and some interesting business opportunities it offers for the Andalusian companies in different areas. A sector that the Portuguese Government has listed as “one of the main clusters and one of the priorities for the future of the country’s economy” and it takes just as an example the Andalusian cluster development. “We can benefit from the experience and cooperation with other clusters, such as the Andalusian, and learn with the best done in each country”, he said. How is the aerospace industry in Portugal? How the sector is structured and what are the main companies working on it? The aviation industry is growing in Portugal. OGMA historically was the main big company in this sector even though 90% of its work is focused on the maintenance area, not manufacturing. Today is a stronger industry, with more consistent players and at different levels, ie OEM (Embraer), Tier 1 (with OGMA already consolidated and Caetano Aeronautics in developing) and a series of Tier 2 and Tier 3 (Motofil, Incompol, Vangest) that work directly for major aircraft manufacturers in both tooling and manufacturing aircraft parts. In the area of services, Portugal has very strong and experienced companies in engineering, in almost all areas, including mechanical engineering (design and calculation of structures) and industrial, systems, UAVs, MRO services, airworthiness, etc. What are the most important subsectors or further development? Where the future of this industry in Portugal is headed? The Portuguese Government has assumed the aviation sector as one of the main clusters for the future. This is a sector of goods and services of strong exporter component, and therefore has been included among the priorities of the Portuguese economy. Portugal needs dimension and one of the weaknesses that we have to overcome is precisely to make companies work together to provide a more consistent supply. Portugal has all the conditions to be very competitive in the aviation market: we have good universities, availability of the Government to invest, fiscal policies that support business and hiring, a R&D well developed and support by multiple instruments. In general, the environment is favorable to the growth of the sector. In what way the Government supports the aerospace companies? The structural reforms implemented in recent years combined with a plan of tax incentives and employment make Portugal an increasingly attractive destination for entrepreneurs. For a project that involves job creation, of quality, can represent a saving of up to 36% of wage costs. Also noteworthy is the fiscal reform, and more specifically the reduction in tax on companies: the rate of corporation tax low to 21% in the year 2015 and will be reduced up to 17% - 19% in the years following. Specifically for the aerospace industry the Government has created a job skills program that enhances the capabilities in different fields such as metallurgy, and creates new qualifications for the industry such as aircraft structures technician. El sector se ha desarrollado mucho antes en España que en Portugal, tiene un mercado mucho más grande, ha participado en programas importantes >> “Embraer factories in Portugal will continue to grow and open new opportunities for Portuguese companies, and also for those who are ready, such as the Andalusian” are two training centers in Evora and Setubal, in addition to leverage the capabilities of other centers with experience in the field. In addition, Portugal has a diversified range of capabilities in the sector: cork coating inside aircraft, sophisticated technological systems to monitor critical systems, manufacture of UAVs or the development of complex aerostructures. The aviation sector is an example of integration of skills that come together to create large projects, such as “LIFE”, aimed at the interior of the aircraft to be lighter, ecological and comfortable. Do you think that this sector is strategic for Europe in general? All forecasts of the major aircraft manufacturers (Airbus, Boeing, Embraer, Bombardier) anticipate a significant growth in the number of new aircraft, due to the increased number of passengers in the next 20 years. In Europe we have one of the world’s two largest constructors -Airbus-, and Embraer is increasing investments in Portugal and other European countries (its number of European suppliers is increasing every year). As this is a sector with long cycles it brings stability to the suppliers of these manufacturers. This is what companies need, whatever they be. ¿How have been affected the Portuguese companies by the economic crisis of recent years? What extent? I think in the same way as others in Europe. Anyway, in a period of crisis there are always opportunities and in regard to the aviation industry, many companies have entered this industry from other sectors, precisely because it is a strategic move to diversify activity. In your country there is PEMAS, the Portuguese aerospace industry association, but are there also regional clusters, as HÉLICE, aimed at enhancing the sector’s development in the areas of greater knowledge and tradition? Taking into account the size of the country and the size of the Portuguese sector it was not considered necessary to create regional clusters. What we have is a powerful national cluster and well organized. Besides PEMAS (Aeronautics), there are DANOTEC (Defence) and PROESPAÇO (Space), which are three very experienced organizations and companies that have recently reached an agreement to join in an unique partnership called AED. What differences do you see between the Portuguese and Spanish industry sector? The sector has developed much earlier in Spain than in Portugal, has a much larger market, has participated in major programmes such as the A400M, counts on different factories of Airbus, such as Tablada, San Pablo and Cadiz in Andalusia. They are different dimensions. >> can follow the same way and maybe faster. There is availability and willingness to do so. We have all the conditions we need for that and we can also benefit from the experience and cooperation with other clusters, such as the Andalusian one. What is the relationship today between the Andalusian and Portuguese companies? Many Portuguese companies have already Andalusian firms as customers. However, it is clear that Portugal does not yet have a strong presence in Andalusia as it could have. And I think the Andalusian companies, the Airbus Group, its Tier 1 and many other firms of the auxiliary industry are not familiar with the diversity and capabilities of our companies. This is an area in which we want to work together with representatives of HÉLICE Cluster so that we can bring closer to our companies. In that sense, the Portuguese Platform for Defense Industries (IdD) and HÉLICE are now developing a close cooperation and last May held a B2B meeting between companies 33 of both countries, with the presence of the Secretary of State for Defence of Portugal, Ms. Berta Cabral. Do you think the Portuguese market offers good business opportunities for Andalusian companies? In what areas? There is no doubt. Particularly in manufacturing. By quality and price. Price is increasingly decisive for large aerospace companies responsible for large outsourcing basis. The price influences, but also the quality and control of risks. Deadlines in aerospace are very relevant, they involve risks that proximity helps to reduce. The competitive advantage of Portuguese companies is in this relation price-quality-proximity, I think. In both engineering services and manufacturing of components or tooling, we have a great capacity which can enhance the growth of the sector. Embraer, one of the major global manufacturers, has opened two new factories in the country in recent years. What is assuming for the sector? This is a huge step forward in the quick development of the sector in Portugal. Along with an offsets programme of Airbus, which was very successful, Embraer’s presence in Portugal is crucial for companies to have visibility and warranties in long term. There are two magnificent factories already in operation and will continue to grow and open new opportunities for Portuguese companies, and also for those who are nearby, such as the Andalusian. You know the Andalusian aerospace sector. How do you assess its evolution in recent years? The Andalusian cluster is a reference in Europe, generating sales of more than 2,000 million euros by year. It is an example for the development of the Portuguese industry. Since my arrival in Andalusia I have tried to learn what is done best in the Andalusian sector, talking with companies and through regular contact with representatives of HÉLICE. The goal is to identify opportunities for collaboration. From what I have seen in the past two years, it seems clear to me that there are many reasons for Portugal and Andalusia to have a closer partnership, by geographical proximity and by how much we can learn with the best done in each country. What message would you send to Andalusian companies to encourage them to participate in the Portuguese aerospace sector? To know more and better the Portuguese companies, to include them in their business consultations, projects entrusted to check they are capable of doing it well. And of course, visit us in Portugal, they will be surprised in many ways. It is also important to know that we can count on IDD and AICEP (Agency for Investment and Foreign Trade of Portugal) that have the mission of supporting Portuguese companies of the aerospace and defense sector in general, in the internationalization processes, and also for companies that want to do business and invest in Portugal. / José Luis Calvo, President of Isotrol. Isotrol expands its presence in the sector developing Tests Means for aircraft The technology company takes a step forward in its commitment to strategic diversification and increases its participation in the aviation industry with a new business line focused on developing hardware and software for aircraft testing systems on the ground during manufacture. It is also exploring new markets and business opportunities to transfer its experience and know-how in specific areas to other countries and customers of the aerospace sector, in which counts on more than ten years of experience. I sotrol is a recognized engineering specialized in developing software for systems of supervision and control present in different sectors. Now is strengthening its strategic commitment to diversification of activities and services and has decided to enhance its participation in the aviation sector with the launch of a new business line focused on developing systems and Tests Means for aircraft. This is an activity that is growing significantly in the Andalusian company thanks to its participation in several important contracts awarded last year in aerospace, a sector in which Isotrol is present since 2005. The firm has created in this area, based on alliances with other partners, complete turnkey solutions for testing of aircraft systems on the ground during manufacture and assembly processes. The President of Isotrol, José Luis Calvo, explains “this kind of activity requires an immediate availability of the equipment in development and a great knowledge of the technologies of each customer, which involves creating a range of highly specialized services”. For this reason, Isotrol works closely with another Andalusian company, AERYS, with which is developing turnkey solutions that combine hardware and software necessary to create tests means required in each project. “For the right development of this activity, we work both in Seville and Madrid, in close relationship with our customers”, he adds. With this new project Isotrol aims to consolidate and increase its presence in the aviation industry, by providing knowledge and know-how developed for other sectors such as electricity, and continuing the work of diversification and penetration into new markets that the company has remained as one of its hallmarks along its 30 years of existence. A+A José Luis Calvo stressed that several factors influenced Isotrol’s decision of getting into the aerospace business. “On the one hand, we reached the necessary maturity in traditional sectors and it was time to open up new markets. Furthermore, the proximity to the Airbus headquarters in Sevilla allowed us to maintain constant communication with the customer and provide a quality service in terms and with very competitive prices. Thus, we take this opportunity to project the experience and know-how of our team in such a specialized field.” In addition to the test means development, the company continues carrying out other works well established for the sector, focusing on after-sales services, such as publications and technical documentation manuals (operation, maintenance, etc.), required when an aircraft is delivered. These works were initially linked to L&M programme Airbus Defence & Space (C212, C295, CN-235), and in the last few years they have expanded to other major programmes such as the A330MRTT and the A400M. Its activity in the sector has also involved some collaboration with the Airbus DS International Training Centre, developing interactive courses for pilots of the C212, CN235 and C295 models. “However, our business has evolved in parallel to the development of specific software with comprehensive technological content, an activity in which we are experts”, says José Luis Calvo. Growth abroad and new markets The company is committed to internationalization and openness to foreign markets, as evidenced by the establishment of trade offices in the USA, UK and Brazil in the last two years. In this sense, Isotrol is analyzing from its aerospace area the opportunity of participating in new markets and take advantage of business opportunities to transfer the experience and technical knowledge of its expert team on Technical Publications and test benches to other countries. “We are convinced that our capabilities can be exported to international markets, where companies can take our industry experience we have developed over our history” the president said. >> EMPRESAS A+A 39 Isotrol is specialized in the implementation of technological solutions for many sectors, and Airbus is its major customer in aeronautics, for which develops projects in the A400M, A330 MRTT and L&M programmes © Airbus por incrementar la especialización y calidad de nuestros productos, tanto en hardware como en software, para aumentar aún más el valor de nuestra oferta, buscando las alianzas adecuadas para crecer y diversificar nuestra actividad en nuevos clientes y sectores”. / Isotrol headquarters in Seville. For this purpose, the roadmap of the company has established itself as one of its objectives for the coming years to strengthen its position in the areas of specialization of the aviation industry. In the case of the Technical Publications, “we look for maintaining and expanding our cooperation with large customers such as Airbus DS and Airbus Helicopters; in the case of Tests Means we will continue investing in a better specialization and quality of our products, both hardware and software, to further increase the value of our offer, searching for the right partnerships to grow and diversify our business into new customers and sectors”. Apart from diversification and specialization, Isotrol also adds innovation as a key tool for growth in the future, an aspect that considers especially important to increase competitiveness and generate greater knowledge to its professional team, composed today of more than 200 people. In fact, R&D is part of Isotrol’s activity since the beginning, which emerged from the Higher Technical School of Engineering at the University of Seville. It highlights in this regard the participation of Isotrol in many R&D European projects, which has allowed it to develop interesting initiatives as ADALSCOM, aimed at improving communications systems of platforms and unmanned aircraft (UAS / RPAS), as well as participating in projects related to software development and quality systems in aircraft. The aim is also to continue working on this line and take advantage of technological and business opportunities in the international aviation industry, which have increased considerably thanks to the boost and development that Andalusia has experienced in this field over the last decade, as indicates Isotrol’s president. “I am convinced that aerospace sector is key to the development of Andalusia, as it happened 40 years ago in the south of France. At that time, the French government decided to develop an industry of future in Toulouse, which has been a key economic factor to a region that once was one of the most underdeveloped and dependent on traditional sectors with lower value added. I had the opportunity to see this change, since I worked as trainee in Toulouse after finishing Industrial Engineering studies. That is the example to follow together, to make Andalusian aerospace a strong and competitive industry and with a great future ”, concluded José Luis Calvo. “Nuestro objetivo es convertirnos en proveedores de referencia para este tipo de equipamiento tecnológico, sobre todo para sumi>> T he history of the company EPMM is an example of the constant innovation in the aerospace sector, living with companies betting decisively to be at the top of the industry for pioneering technology developments. This young Sevillian firm has developed a series of models of specialized machines for the manufacture of parts in carbon fiber, and is currently developing machining centres of large dimensions for the machining of metal parts. With this, EPMM aims to become a national and international reference in the supply of milling machines and machining centres with gantry architecture. The machines manufactured by EPMM are focused mainly on the machining of complex parts with five interpolated axis in metallic materials and carbon fiber. The aerospace sector increasingly demand more precise machines and capable of machining a part in one position, which enables to substantially reduce the machining time. EPMM offers customized solutions tailored to the needs of its clients, fulfilling not only technical requirements but also those of the current global aircraft programmes. “We take care of the development of the machine from the conception of the product together with the customer until integration and installation of equipment and service in plant, also guaranteeing a minimum of productivity”, explains José María Borrego, director of the company. After the assembly of structures and elements of the machining center, calibration is performed to verify that customer specifications are met. “The accuracy of the equipment is very high, as it is essential to meet the increasingly demanding requirements in the aviation industry”, says Borrego, adding that its machines have the most advanced technology capable of machining parts from 2x1 meters to 40x6 meters, offering the highest levels of precision and quality. “Our goal is to become suppliers of reference for this type of technological equipment, especially for Tier 2 suppliers in both the aerospace industry and others such as automotive”. To do this, the company has already started selling and exporting its first equipment in countries like Brazil and Argentina, and faces with good prospects of growth the end of this year and next 2016. A+A The company has already supplied its equipment to companies of the Andalusian and Spanish aerospace sector such as Carbures or TRC Composite, in addition to some companies linked to other industrial activities. Actually the EPMM machines are having a great acceptance at the national level, since before there was no national manufacturer of this type of machines for machining aluminum and special alloys at highspeed, as it was a market just reserved for years to German and Italian producers. In total, EPMM will produce and deliver four equipments in 2015, and expects to double its orders for 2016. . “Our intention was to grow slowly, occupying a niche in the market that is not exploited and has very few suppliers, but we are having a great acceptance, which is accelerating our growth”, says the director of EPMM. “Now we have more mature technology and adjusted our production costs, enabling us to offer the price 30% below the competition”, says José María Borrego. Wide technical knowledge Created in 2012, EPMM emerged from the entrepreneurial initiative of this young Sevillian who has over seventeen years of experience in the machining sector and began his career as technician for control of CNC machinery in some companies in the aerospace industry. From this area, José María Borrego detected the need of companies to have 5-axis machining centres for application in carbon fiber pieces and composite materials. “A decade ago was a new material and there was no machinery of that kind developed to work with pieces like that, so I thought about applying technology already used in other sectors, such as plastic or wood, for other cutting-edges industries, such as aeronautics”, he says. After starting this way commercializing some firms of milling machines and machining centres, he decided to take the leap and create EPMM, developing the latest technology and offering its own products to market. In this sense, he highlights the intensive work of R&D carried out by the company, financed with its own resources, and that is allowing orders tailored of the customer’s needs, providing “turnkey” solutions. The process begins with the engineering and design of machinery for which it is very important a knowledge base on own designs of >> EMPRESAS A+A como técnico de control de maquinaria CNC en diversas compañías de la industria aeronáutica. 43 machining centres developed by the company, then technology should be adapted to customer needs, creating thus a tailored product. Leadtime of production and delivery of equipment is approximately from six to eight months, depending on the complexity of the machine. The company has a staff of highly qualified professionals in different areas (mechanics, electronics, programming, computing, engineering, design, etc.) and offices in Seville and Madrid. Its headquarters are located in Torneo Empresarial Park in the Andalusian capital, where there are the management and administration departments, while manufacturing plant and the areas of design and engineering are located in the industrial estate of La Morera in Utrera (Seville). In Madrid, the firm has a commercial office and its technical service, which serves the central and northern area of the country. Among the future challenges of EPMM is the commitment to diversification, an aspect that is present from the beginning but it wants to enhance for the coming years, thanks to its continuous technological evolution and business opportunities that can be generated in other sectors. “We have so far developed equipment for use in carbon fiber and light materials, but we are currently manufacturing machines for machining aluminum parts with high demands, aimed at the automotive sector. We have already begun to offer other machines for five-axis machining in steel and special alloys. Our specialty is the manufacture of machines of medium and large size capable of high speed machining of materials such as carbon fiber, aluminum steel and special alloys, since in such machines the most advanced existing technology on the market is integrated”, concludes José María Borrego. A+A 45 Andalusia hosts the first landing of an Unmanned Aircraft UAV on a mobile platform without the use of GPS The EC-SAFEMOBIL European project is led by the Center for Advanced Aerospace Technologies (FADA-CATEC) and the University of Seville. Actually is developing new technologies for the safe and reliable use of unmanned aircraft in different applications that can mean a risk for people like disaster management, search and rescue, and other security operations. One of the recent milestones of this research has been the landing of an unmanned helicopter on a mobile platform in 3D, using a clamping support device with a wire and without the aid of satellite positioning systems. Landing tests were developed in the ATLAS Experimental Flight Center in Jaen. A new milestone for innovation and technological development in the aerospace sector in Andalusia, and especially in one of the fields of greatest projection in the future at international level: unmanned aerial systems (UAS / RPAS). The EC-SAFEMOBIL European project, an initiative under the Seventh Framework Programme for R&D of the European Commission that is lead and coordinated by the Centre for Advanced Aerospace Technologies (FADA-CATEC) in collaboration with the University of Seville, has managed successfully the first tethered landing of an unmanned aircraft on a moving platform in three dimensions using a wire and without GPS. This is a very important experience because it opens the way for the application of this type of UAS landings in boats or ground vehicles, one of the objectives of the EC-SAFEMOBIL project. This initiative pursues to develop new technologies of multivehicle cooperation using unmanned aerial systems, particularly new methods of accurate position estimation and motion control that will make UAS and ground autonomous systems more secure and reliable for a wide range of applications such as disaster management, search and rescue (especially under extreme conditions), security and other missions that involve a risk to humans. UAV landing tests took place in June at the ATLAS Experimental Flight Center facilities located in Villacarrillo (Jaén). These are the only facilities in Spain that have been designed specifically to test light unmanned aircraft. The test was conducted using an unmanned electric helicopter and a clamping device based on a rope and a 3D moving platform, >> A+A 46 TECNOLOGÍA A+A que han sido diseñadas especifícamente para realizar vuelos de prueba con aeronaves no tripuladas de tipo ligero. One of the most important aspects of this new application is that the developed system does not require the use of satellite positioning devices, such as GPS. The results of this trial are of great interest for the aerospace sector, as they could be applied for landing in situations where such operations cannot be carried out due to a moving landing platform and wind conditions, even during the absence of reliable satellite positioning signals. Furthermore, these developments are being implemented taking into account security conditions that may facilitate the integration of UAVs in non-segregated airspace, which >> El proyecto está desarrollando otros novedosos demostradores tecnológicos, como el seguimiento de varios vehículos terrestres empleando UAS con capacidad para evitar colisiones, o la automatización de almacenes mediante el trabajo cooperativo de varios vehículos terrestres autónomos The project is developing other innovative technology demonstrators, such as the tracking of several ground vehicles using multiple unmanned aerial systems with capacity to avoid collisions, or warehouse automation through cooperative work of several autonomous land vehicles TECNOLOGÍA A+A 47 already implies an advance for future use in scenarios in which people can also intervene. During the test were carried out different experiments to perform automatic UAV landing on the mobile platform simulating bad weather conditions (high winds and major movements of the landing platform); to apply successfully a fastening system to compensate for disturbances and relative movement between the aircraft and the platform; to increase the security during operation and enhance its integration with the flight control system of the UAV. The development of such new technologies has placed FADACATEC at the forefront of research in the field of unmanned systems. This is an area in which FADA-CATEC has led several international projects and initiatives, being acknowledged as one of the most relevant European centres in the development of new applications based on UAS/RPAS. A+A 49 © Airbus A new boost for the A330MRTT programme will bring new workload to the Andalusian industry The aircraft manufactured by Airbus Defence & Space has been selected by South Korea as its new air-to-air refuelling for the Air Force, and will incorporate a total of four units until 2019. The Asian country becomes the seventh customer of the aircraft, in the absence of the final confirmation of the Airbus DS contract with India. In addition, Australia has decided to expand its current A330MRTT fleet with the incorporation of two new aircraft, which will join the five already in service today. A irbus Defence & Space adds two new contracts for the A300MRTT programme, the air-to-air refuelling aircraft for different Air Forces, and receives a new boost that serves to expand its customer base in the international market. In particular, the Multi Role Tanker Transport has been selected by South Korea and Australia for their fleets, with a total of six units ordered by both countries. These two new contracts will have a positive impact as new workload for the Andalusian aerospace cluster, which is very active in the A330MRTT programme, mainly through the Airbus site “Tablada” (Seville) and the work of a significant number of auxiliary enterprises of the community. The agreement with South Korea is valued at $1,300 million and provides for delivery of four A330MRTT aircraft in 2019. As announced by the Defense Department of Acquisition of South Korea, the Airbus DS aircraft won the competition for the Boeing KC-46, its main competitor, and Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI), which submitted an option based on a Boeing 767 platform acquired second-hand. The Asian country selected the A330MRTT for its longer endurance, fuel capacity, number of crew members and cargo it can carry, in addition to price. In this sense, the Airbus tanker will be the first air-to-air refuelling aircraft in South Korea, which aims to extend the range and endurance of its combat aircraft to other regions. With this agreement, South Korea becomes the seventh customer of the A330MRTT, after Australia, United Kingdom, UAE, Saudi Arabia, Singapore and India. The latter is still negotiating the contract with Airbus DS for the supply of six units in the coming future. Airbus Defence & Space showed its satisfaction by winning this contract in an open and objective bidding process, and stressed that it allows maintaining a sustainable and long-term cooperation with Korean industry, as there is with other Airbus Group divisions. >> A+A 50 PROGRAMAS A+A Arabia Saudí, Singapur e India. A+A The decision of the South Korean Government strengthens the position of A330MRTT in the international market, since “it won all tanker aircraft competitions outside the United States”, having been selected by several nations plus the European Defence Agency. New order for Australia Airbus Defence & Space has added another order by the Ministry of Defence of Australia that will acquire two new A330MRTT to complement the five already in service under the name KC30A, with the 33 Squadron of the Royal Australian Air Force at the base of Amberley. However, this order -unlike all A330 MRTT converted to date- is not based on the use of new aircraft from the Airbus assembly line in Toulouse (France), but on two previously-owned Qantas Airways A330-200 airliners. According to the Australian Ministry, this decision has been taken as these particular aircraft are extremely close to the same basic specification as the KC-30As already in service, >> PROGRAMAS A+A 51 The new agreement with Australia consists of the conversion of two previouslyowned Qantas Airways A330 to MRTTs © Airbus and by the savings in the cost of the transaction, valued at approximately $ 300 million. The two new aircraft will be modified by Airbus Defence & Space at Getafe (Madrid) and delivered to the customer in 2018. The first one arrived to these facilities last July to be equipped with the new air-to-air refueling system and additional devices. In RAAF service the A330 MRTT is equipped with the Airbus Refuelling Boom System (ARBS), two underwing hose-and-drogue refuelling pods used to refuel RAAF F/A-18 and other fighters, and a Universal Aerial Refuelling Receptacle Slipway Installation (UARRSI) allowing it to be refuelled itself from another tanker. Among the strengths of the A330 MRTT highlights its ability to carry out different missions, including the transport of passengers and medical evacuation, in addition to refuelling aircraft in flight, and the greater fuel load which is capable of carrying over rivals (110 tonnes without additional tanks). Also, the European aircraft is a model already available, unlike the KC-46, which must still wait until 2017 to be completed. © Airbus © Airbus The A330neo programme is running Moreover, Airbus has started series production of the new model of the A330 family, the A330neo, which incorporates new Rolls-Royce Trent 700 engines, aerodynamic improvements and new cabin features, which will provide a significant fuel savings valued at 14% per seat. The European consortium started in summer the manufacture of the first parts in the plants of Saint Eloi (Toulouse) and Nantes, both in France. In the first one started making the pylon that will hold of the engines of the aircraft, while in Nantes plant began the construction of the first centre wing box. The new pylon is a key element in the innovative design of the A330neo. Built on a titanium base, it uses advanced materials and technologies derived from the A350, including a new fairing made of composite materials and titanium for optimal aerodynamics. Meanwhile, for the center wing box is being used a manufacturing system based on a grid, which allows the piece, composed of 330 triangular beams, offer all the requirements of stiffness, strenght and low weight. In addition to greater fuel savings, A330neo operators will also benefit from a range increase of up to 400 nautical miles and of course all the operational commonality advantages of the Airbus Family. The first deliveries of the A330neo are scheduled for the last quarter of 2017. A+A A lestis Aerospace continues progressing in its work schedule and delivery of components for the A350, the new Airbus commercial aircraft, and has completed the first structure of the belly fairing for the A350-1000 version, the second one developed by the European manufacturer in this ambitious worldwide programme. The Spanish Tier 1 delivered this first unit last September 18 in a ceremony attended by the Head of the A350 XWB programme in Alestis, Carlos Dominguez; and the Head of the A350 XWB programme in Airbus Spain, Luis Guerra, who were responsible for symbolically endorse this milestone. So Alestis takes one >> PROGRAMAS A+A 53 Alestis Aerospace delivers first A350-1000 belly fairing The Andalusian aerospace company starts to deliver to Airbus the first components for the second version of the A350 programme after an intense work of design and manufacture developed in the past three years, using innovative automatic production technologies in the field of carbon fiber. Alestis reaches a new milestone in the aviation industry since two years ago started in series production of this structure for the 900 version of the A350, as well as the tail cone, thanks to a contract with Airbus. The European manufacturer, meanwhile, continues to make progress in the production of the first A350-1000 and has begun construction of the first wing and fuselage assembly. quienes fueron los encargados de refrendar de manera simbólica este hito. The Andalusian company takes two years manufacturing the same structure for the A350 900, and has already delivered a total of 47 units, with a production rate of four sets per month. Alestis noted that “this figure shows the programme maturity, as well the stability and consolidation of the Andalusian Tier 1”, which is also responsible for the manufacture of the A350 tail cone, thanks to a direct contract with Airbus. The manufacture and assembly of both parts are developed mainly through its plants in El Puerto de Santa Maria and Puerto Real (Cádiz), but are also involved other factories of the company, such as San Pablo (Seville) and Miñano (Alava). The design of the new belly fairing for the 1000 version was launched at the end of 2012, and the challenge was to design a structure to accept the increased loads and geometric modification of the new aircraft model. In addition, the company indicated that it should be very similar to the A350 900 version, so that would facilitate simultaneous production and with similar costs. As in the 900 version, the company has defined the structure basically in carbon fiber components (composite), using automated manufacturing technologies, innovative concept in this type of surfaces. The manufacture of this type of aerostructures with carbon fiber skeleton, represents a major milestone in the aviation industry as it is the first time in Europe that the production of these parts deals with these techniques and materials. The milestone achieved by Alestis joins others by Airbus in recent weeks within the manufacturing process of this new unit of the A350, as the start of production of the first wing. These works began in August at the factory in Broughton (UK), responsible for the production of the wings of various models of the manufacturer, while the Spanish factory in Illescas is also involved in this process as responsible for producing the wing lower skin. In addition, plants in Hamburg (Germany) and Saint-Nazaire (France) received in late September the first components of the fuselage, whose final assembly will start in early 2016 in Toulouse (France). For its part, the Airbus factory in Puerto Real (Cádiz) advances in the production of the A350 horizontal stabilizer (HTP), which is already at full capacity to meet the demand for series production of the aircraft, scheduled in the coming future. This factory expanded its facilities last year just to increase the production capacity of parts >> A+A 54 PROGRAMAS A+A de cola del A350, gracias a un contrato directo con Airbus. Todas ellas configuradas con >> A+A Las aerolíneas Vietnam Airlines y Finnair ya han recibido su primer A350, mientras que TAM será la siguiente que podrá poner en servicio la nueva aeronave comercial de Airbus Vietnam Airlines and Finnair have already received its first A350 aircraft, while TAM will be the next to put into service the new Airbus commercial aircraft of the aircraft, and it has been multiplied by three thanks to these improvements. The A350-1000 is the longer fuselage model of the A350 family. It is a widebody jetliner of nearly 74 meters from nose to tail, designed for longhaul flights, with a capacity to carry between 336 and 440 passengers, depending on cabin layout. Among its main innovations, in addition to the use of new lighter materials, we find its Rolls-Royce Trent XWB engines, more efficient and sustainable. Airbus currently has 169 orders of the A350 for nine different airlines and is expected to enter into service in 2017. New deliveries to airlines The manufacturing process of the A350 is growing in parallel with a test programme and delivery schedule of Airbus, which is gradually >> Pedido récord para el A320neo, que supera los 4.000 aviones vendidos IndiGo, la aerolínea con mayor cuota de mercado en India, ha realizado un pedido histórico a Airbus para la compra de un total de 250 aviones A320neo, la nueva versión mejorada del A320. This airline has also become the first to sign an agreement with Airbus for customized Flight Hour Service (FHS) in order to meet its new fleet, which places it as the first A350 operator in selecting this service for a period of 12 years. Airbus is also finalizing the preliminary tests for the first flight and subsequent delivery of the first A350 to the Brazilian airline TAM, which has already left the paint hangar and now is installing engines and interiors of the passenger cabin. This delivery is scheduled for December and TAM will be the first airline in Latin America to receive the A350. IndiGo, the airline with the largest market share in India, made a historical order to Airbus for the purchase of a total of 250 A320neo aircraft, the new improved version of the A320. The order represents not only the largest order of units for this aircraft, but higher purchase volume received along the history of the Airbus programmes. IndiGo already has in its fleet 100 A320 aircraft and in 2011 was commissioned by 280 aircraft of the A320neo, so there is a total amount of 530 aircraft. The new contract will result in more workload for the factories of Airbus in El Puerto de Santa Maria and Puerto Real (Cádiz) although its impact will be felt also in plants in Seville and Getafe, in addition to the UK and the FAL in Toulouse (France). In particular, the Centro Bahía de Cádiz in El Puerto de Santa María will be the largest benefited, because in this plant the fan cowl is manufactured, among other pieces. With this contract the orders for A320neo stood at 4,100 units, making it the market leader in its category. El programa en cuestión está enfocado al desarrollo de una nueva generación del Sistema Embarcado de Generación de Gas Inerte, para la inertización de los tanques de combustible de los >> PROYECTOS A+A FORMACIÓN 57 CESA strengthens its international presence in the sector with new projects in Turkey, India and Korea The Spanish company closed its participation in Le Bourget with two new contracts that will allow it to expand sales and strengthen its commitment to innovation and new technological developments in the area of fluid-mechanical systems. On the one hand, it will be in charge of supplying the complete hydraulic system and the flap actuator of the Turkish trainer aircraft HÜRKUS, and secondly, of the research with the Korean company EMKorea in a new generation of on board inert gas system for air fuel tanks. In addition, CESA is also developing an emergency accumulator for the hydraulic power system of the Indian plane HTT40, which will be ready this year. C ESA (Compañía Española de Sistemas Aeronáuticos) keeps on growing at the international level thanks to the achievement of new contracts and projects that consolidate it as a leading company highly specialized in the following business areas: the design and manufacture of fluid-mechanical systems and landing gear for the aerospace industry. The company closed its participation in the last edition of the Paris Air Show Le Bourget with the signing of two important agreements that will contribute to the increase of its turnover for the coming years and the reinforcement of technological activity and R&D, but above all, these contracts strengthen its strategy of diversification and presence in the international market. In particular, CESA signed with the Turkish company TAI (Turkish Aerospace Industry) two contracts for the HÜRKUS B turboprop trainer, becoming responsible for the supply of the complete hydraulic system and the flap actuators of the aircraft. Thanks to this contract, CESA extends its collaboration with TAI, since it was also responsible for the design and development of the entire hydraulic system for the HÜRKUS A, complying with the demanding in-flight safety requirements set by the aircraft manufacturer. Now, the company signs the contract for the supply of these two components of the new Turkish aircraft trainer, but subjected to changes in product improvement of the results of the flight test campaign, manufacture and delivery of hydraulic systems and flap units. The contract involves the delivery of components for a total of 15 aircraft signed and an optional order of 40 additional, to which must be added the future activities of maintenance and support of the product throughout the useful life of the aircraft which CESA is dealing with TAI. Sales of this contract are valued at €2 million, which could be expanded up to €7 million in the case of signing the 40 optional aircraft. For the Spanish company, this agreement “is an important step to continue the path of growth and consolidation of CESA with TAI, which, on the one hand, it opens a lot of possibilities for the future and, secondly, reinforces good working relationship we maintain thanks to other contracts led by other divisions of TAI”, said Eduardo Chamorro, commercial director of CESA. Besides this contract, CESA signed in Le Bourget a collaboration agreement with the Korean company EMKorea, to jointly participate in the R&D initiative under the auspices of the European Union EUREKA programme, a joint call with the KIAT (Korea Institute for Advancement of Technology), Korean equivalent of The Centre for the Development of Industrial Technology (CDTI) of Spain, through initiatives of collaboration with third countries that contemplates EUREKA. The programme in question is focused on the development a new on-board inert gas generation system for aircraft fuel tanks needed for improving aircraft safety. CESA leads the project with a 70% of the budget. This initiative will be developed based on the experience of both companies in other R&D projects earlier, such as the PROSAVE2, a research project on advanced systems for more eco-efficient aircraft that was led by the Spanish firm and which involved the participation of 18 companies and 19 research centers, with an investment of over €12 million. New developments in India Within this strategy of internationalization and business projection in the search for new markets, CESA has been working for several years in business opportunities that are emerging in India, a country still growing in the aerospace industry, with several aircraft manufacturing programmes of great interest to the global industry. CESA signed three years ago a strategic agreement with the Indian company WIPRO in order to have a reliable supplier and accredited in the country, and establish a partnership with an Indian company to allow access to contracts launched by aerospace companies, within the philosophy established by the Indian government under the name “Make in India”.
