World Language Curriculum
We will be integrating the social studies standards and content
into 1st—3rd grade Spanish class. These students receive 30
minutes of instruction, three times a week. In 4th grade, some
social studies and some other content will be integrated into
Spanish class. These students receive 30 minutes of instruction,
two times a week. Every year your child will learn about a new
Spanish-speaking area of the world. n first grade, they will
explore Honduras & Central America; in second grade they will
learn about Mexico. In third grade, they will focus on Spain.
And in fourth grade, they will learn about Peru in South
America.
Units to be Studied This Month
First Grade:
Semana Santa
• Easter observations in the U.S. & Honduras
• Make alfombras: elaborate decorations in the street
Weather & Climate
• Seasons and climate in the U.S. & Honduras
• Spring weather
Second Grade:
Maps and Globes
• Map symbols, compass rose directions
• Borders & landforms of the U.S. & Mexico
• Label continent and ocean names
Third Grade:
Types of Communities:
• World climate zones & weather characteristics,
make/read bar & line weather graphs
Exploring the United States/ Wisconsin
• Maps, Globes, Models, Grids and Coordinates
• Natural resources, Conservation, National parks
Geography—Exploring North America
• Countries of North America and their borders
• Physical and political features of North America
• Flags and symbols of neighbors in North America
Fourth Grade:
History of Peru:
• Reviewing Inca history & way of life
Immigration:
• What it is like to be an immigrant,
• Mapping where families came from,
• Push-pull factors: Factors that pushed immigrants from their
home countries (war, famine, oppression) and factors that
pulled immigrants (peace, available land to live and farm
on, freedom)

1st graders have been studying have to r ead and use
maps. They’re also practicing being cartógrafos, or mapmakers. They’ll even bring home their very own map that
they’ve made of their classroom. Check out how careful
we are that our map symbols match our map key!
2nd graders have been lear ning about differ ent
profesiones and practicing talking about what they’d
like to be when they grow up. Ask your student what
they enjoy and are good at. What do they hope to be
when they grow up? ¿El bombero? ¿La dentista?
El maestro? ¿La doctora?

4th
3rd graders’ ar e wr apping up our big unit on what
communities need with the idea of government. They
have learned about the 3 branches of gobienrno
(legislative, ejecutiva, y judicial) within the 3 levels of
gobierno (local, estatal, y nacional).
4th graders have been studying the histor y of Per u and the Incas.
They practiced using an idea web to ask & answer questions about what
the Incas, constructed, believed in, used, & cultivated. Ask them:
¿Qué construyeron? ¿Qué creían? ¿Qué usaban? ¿Qué cultivaban?

El Plan del Idioma Mundial
Estamos integrando los estándares de estudios sociales en la
clase española. Los estudiantes reciben 30 minutos de la instrucción, tres veces una semana. Todos los años su niño aprenderá acerca de una nueva área Hispanohablante del mundo. En
primero grado, ellos explorarán Honduras y la América Central; en segundo grado que ellos aprenderán acerca de México.
En tercer grado, ellos se centrarán en España. Y en cuarto grado, ellos aprenderán acerca de Perú en Sudamérica.
