TRIBUTE TO Antonio von Ondarza

To: The Pan American Hockey Federation.
Three National American Associations hoped to qualify for the Olympic hockey tournament in Tokyo, Japan. The F.I.H. arranged a 3 Nation
tournament in Europe, but only two actually reached Europe, so to
qualify one nation had to win 2 matches. Canada beat the U.S.A. in 2
successive games.
The Pan American Games were held in Winnipeg, Canada. Eight nations entered the tournament. Each nation provided an umpire and the
F.I.H. appointed 4 neutral umpires. Argentina won the tournament and
Trinidad & Tobago earned the silver medal. The day after the tournament was complete, a meeting of the eight competitors, the neutral umpires and Mark Cowlishaw, who had been the tournament’s Technical
Delegate, chaired the meeting. The President of the F.I.H. Rene Frank
was an “observer” to the meeting. Peter N Porritt was invited to be the
Secretary of the P.A.H.F and gratefully accepted the invitation.
Elections were held. Mr.Marte from Mexico was elected as President
and each area: S.America, N.America and the Caribbean had a representative elected as well. Four years later the Pan Am Games were held
in Cali, Columbia. Hockey was not played in Colombia at the time. Sen
Rojas, from Columbia, organized the hockey in Cali. Mr. Rojas, despite
almost 9 months of continuous rain in Cali, with the aid of advice from
the P.A.H.F, completed the construction of the hockey fields and the accommodation for the athletes and officials. He did a very fine job!
The P.A.H.F elections were agreed to be held during the Pan Am
Games. M. Azriel of Argentina was elected President. He held office
for two terms and was replaced by Carlos Hernandez Schaffler from
Mexico, who after eight years in office was succeeded by Antonio Von
Ondarza, who is still the long standing President. He plans to retire at
the end of 2013.

I said I hoped to live long enough to see him retire, which caused a lot of
laughter from the audience. So, happily, my desire has come true, at the
age of ninety years. All the best to you, my great friend Tony.
This short passage comes with my best wishes for the future for the
P.A.H.F. & all my friends. Some have already passed on. To all the others I hope you can proceed into old age happily. Good bye for now.

I found Tony Von Ondarza was extremely easy to work with. He often
was in his car driving into Caracas from the airport. Frequently the traffic was very congested so there was plenty of time to talk. The discussions we had were wide ranging and very useful to our service of the
P.A.H.F.
The 50th anniversary of the P.A.H.F was celebrated in Santiago, Chile
which allowed meetings of national officials, together with the President of the F.I.H, Sen Negre. Mr. Tony Von Ondarza asked if I would

Dear Tony,
Little did I know when I first met you in Sydney during the Olympic Games in 2000 that some years
later I would be in my current position with the FIH. In the meantime we had lots of contact and
communication when I was working at the IOC. I have grown to know you as a man who is extremely
passionate about sport and the Olympic movement, but in particular about hockey.
Your legacy will live on, not only in the Pan American region but the FIH at large.
It has been a privilege to work with you over the last few years and I wish you all the best and good
health in the coming years.
I am sure that we will see you at Hockey events in the future.

Siempre he pensado que en relación al Hockey hemos tenido vidas
paralelas.
Entramos en el Council de la FIH en el mismo Congreso, hace ya
muchos años (no hace falta recordarlos), y terminaremos nuestra
directa actividad con sólo dos años de diferencia. Pero también hay
otras coincidencias. Tú has llevado las riendas de una Federación
Continental y yo también pero por un periodo más corto de tiempo.
Creo que juntos hemos vivido los tiempos más increíbles en
nuestro deporte y hemos propiciado grandes cambios de éxitos y
significativos avances para el Hockey.
Dentro de unos días, durante el próximo Congreso de la Federación
Panamericana de Hockey, dejarás la Presidencia. No te vuelves a
presentar. Y es aquí en tu Panamericana donde tu valor e inteligencia
ha tenido su pleno desarrollo. Concretamente la formación, la
estructuración, el desarrollo y la consolidación en una Continental
difícil, complicada y en la que todo estaba por hacer ha sido
fundamentalmente obra tuya.
Tú has sido el gran iniciador y la persona clave en este fantástico
desarrollo. Tu energía, tus contactos, tu habilidad y trabajo han dado
como resultado una faena bien hecha de la cual debes sentirte tan
satisfecho como orgulloso. Como lo estamos de satisfechos como
orgullosos todos los que conocemos y hemos podido seguir esta
trayectoria.
Dejas la Federación Panamericana totalmente consolidada.
Has logrado afiliar un número muy importante de Asociaciones
Nacionales, muchas de ellas gracias a tu iniciativa, visión y trabajo.
Pero sobretodo dejas unas bases sólidas para que quienes te vayan a
suceder encontrarán un campo bien trillado y a punto de dar grandes
e importantes frutos.
No siempre hemos coincidido en nuestras visiones e iniciativas. Pero
de este debate y controversia han salido, pienso yo, muy buenas
soluciones. Tu larga trayectoria en la FIH te avala. Siempre has querido
y has estado en primera línea, con lo que esto significa y reporta.
Pero siempre has pensado en modernizar nuestro deporte y nuestras
estructuras.
Estas palabras son mi personal y sincero reconocimiento. Como
las que tienen otras muchas personas que a lo largo de los años
te han acompañado en el devenir de nuestra FIH. En verdad creo
que mereces este público reconocimiento. Como estoy totalmente
seguro que este reconocimiento será palpable durante este tu último
Congreso de tu Federación Panamericana cuando todos tus amigos te
rodearán para abrazarte y despedirte como mereces. Serán momentos
emotivos para ti, pero al mismo tiempo inolvidables. Como también
serán momentos emotivos para muchos de nosotros que a tu lado
estaremos.
Termino recordando que me llena de orgullo haber sido el Presidente
de la FIH que te impuso el Premio más alto que la FIH tiene: el de
“Miembro de Honor”, a instancias y aprobación unánime del Ejecutivo
de esta Federación Internacional, en el Congreso que tuvo lugar
en Montreux en Noviembre del 2010. Todo un reconocimiento
internacional y personal a tu larga labor y dedicación a un deporte
que de verdad has amado: el Hockey.
Personalmente no te digo adiós pues sé que a buen seguro te vamos
a encontrar en las canchas de hockey asistiendo a las competiciones
de nuestro deporte por todo el mundo, queriendo encontrarte con tus
amigos, compartir con ellos y tomar unas copas recordando los viejos
tiempos, que como se dice son siempre mejores que los actuales.
Tú eres hombre del mundo. Tu vida y tu casa es el mundo entero. En
cualquier lugar del mundo donde haya Hockey te encontraremos. Por
ello sólo te digo “hasta pronto”.
Abrazándote te doy mis gracias personales y por el cargo que
represento el de todo el Hockey Internacional.

Tony has been an eager defender of hockey integration in the Pan American region; boosting
the growth of the activity, strengthening its structures, and making possible the incorporation
of new countries. We have all learned from his lessons, and will continue to work to reinforce
his efforts and stay on the path of growth of the Pan American hockey. His priority, which
should also be ours in the future, has been the ATHLETES, that together with his moral
values, ethics and chivalry encourages us all, to keep walking in the same direction.
Discussions, differences and many coincidences made possible “our trip” together as leaders
of the PAHF and the FIH hockey, ultimately showing us; that what we do for our beloved
hockey it really worth. Tony is an example to be follow and those who are involved in the
continental hockey will always be grateful for his tireless work.
Tony ha sido desde siempre un aguerrido defensor de la integración del hockey en la Región
Panamericana, ha empujado el crecimiento de la actividad fortaleciendo sus estructuras y
logrando la incorporación de nuevos países. Todos nosotros, hemos aprendido de sus
lecciones, y continuaremos trabajando de forma tal de poder apuntalar sus esfuerzos y
permanecer en la senda del crecimiento del hockey panamericano. Su prioridad, que deberá
ser también la nuestra en el futuro, es EL ATLETA, y junto con sus valores morales, éticos y
su caballerosidad, insta a mantenernos en su misma dirección.
Las discusiones, diferencias y muchas coincidencias, nos permitieron realizar juntos “el
viaje” como dirigentes del hockey de la PAHF y la FIH, mostrándonos al final que lo que
hacemos por amor al hockey realmente vale. Tony un ejemplo a seguir y los que estamos en
el hockey continental estaremos siempre agradecidos por su incansable trabajo.

TRIBUTE MESSAGE on Tony von Ondarza’s
retirement as PAHF President
I have known Tony von Ondarza for over 3
decades serving with him at various times
on the FIH Council and Executive Board.
I have the utmost admiration for his
incredible commitment to hockey, not
only in Pan America, but worldwide.
At times one had the feeling that he was the glue that
kept Pan American Hockey together. His multi-lingualism,
persuasiveness, vision and willingness to travel vast
distances for hockey matters are remarkable and were a
major factor in placing the PAHF at the forefront of the
Continental Federations.
His role as Vice-President of the FIH was equally remarkable,
as is his vast knowledge of the game and all its aspects,
his network of contacts, together with his loyalty to and
support of the Presidents under whom he served-all vital
in placing hockey at the forefront of the truly respected
Olympic sports.
Personally, I spent many pleasant hours discussing sport in
general, opera and many subjects with Tony whose general
knowledge and experiences could fill many volumes.
Tony, you have been a monumental figure in hockey and
we thank you for your tremendous contribution to the
game. We wish you (and Maria Elena, who also deserves our
enormous gratitude) a healthy and peaceful retirement from
hockey-but we know that you will never really retire from
our beautiful game!

I have known Tony since 1985 when he was a TD for JWC in Vancouver,
and I was umpire. At this tournament he up graded me to grade one,
which was the first step for me to start my international career. I met him
several times after that; he always a good advisor to me.
In 2001 I became his colleague in the FIH to date . I have learned from
his experience.
Thank you Tony and I wish for you to have good time with your family .

Dear Tony,
After more than 30 exciting years the time has come for you to say goodbye to all of us.
All of us means indeed all of us: all over the whole world you have worked together with
hundreds of different people, men and women. You have seen with your own eyes how the
development of hockey made progress, not in the last place because you were working so hard
to achieve that.
Of course your special territory was Pan Am, but because of your European background you
always made a link to the rest of the world.
My personal impression of you comes especially from the last years, from our time together in
the FIH Executive Board. It is a very pleasant impression. Sitting next to each other we could
exchange comments to each other about everything we heard. We didn’t agree always, but that
didn’t matter. Our contact was always open, friendly and respectful.
I would like to thank you for that ánd for the enormous efforts you have made for hockey in the
world.

Dear Tony,
Not many people around today were part of the PAHF before you became President but I was. The
PAHF had few members, virtually no budget and really only existed to enable participation in the Pan
American Games.
Under your leadership, the PAHF took on the broad mandate of promoting and developing hockey in the
Americas for all countries and for both genders. You insisted on the equal use of Spanish and English, on
competitions for both men and women, on an equitable representation of men and women on the
Board and Committees, on the need to build a solid financial foundation and on the need to put the
interests of athletes first. The PAHF has grown to be a respected and valued partner in the global effort
to promote hockey worldwide under your leadership.
As your “left-hand and right-hand” as you always called me, I know very well the passion and
commitment that you have for hockey and the dedication, emotion and energy that you poured into the
PAHF on a daily basis. As President, you had the capacity to keep on pushing for what you believed to
be right long after others had stepped aside - will he never stop, we sometimes said!

Estimado Tony,
Me piden unas líneas como homenaje a tus 30 años en la Federación
Panamericana y mi primer pensamiento es: ¿Cómo resumir 30 años de
dedicación en “unas líneas”?
Se me ocurren mil historias en mis escasos 4 años de vinculación al Hockey,
pero creo que sería decir un poco más de lo que van a decir todos los que
han estado presidiendo federaciones y peleando campeonatos. Creo que
en este sentido bastaría con decir: Tú HAS sido el Hockey a lo largo de los
últimos 30 años.
Prefiero entonces referirme a lo de afuera, lo que no sale en la página
web de la PAHF pero que para los que tratamos contigo fue mucho más
importante. Tú HAS sido un amigo. Y esto me deja más conforme. Porque
la amistad va más allá de conseguir una cancha sintética, o las mejores
subvenciones. El amigo es aquel cuya presencia aparece cuando más se
necesita. Y ahí Tony siempre estuviste.
Quiero acordarme más que de ti al borde de las canchas o en las oficinas
de la Federación de turno, en el fondo de mi casa disfrutando de un asado,
rodeado de gente de hockey, pero mucho más allá del hockey en esos
momentos.
Supongo que después de tantos años el dejar esta actividad se va a sentir.
Para eso están los amigos. Cuando quieras el fondo está esperándote con los
otros amigos que nos dio el hockey.

My Dear Tony,
I have just been informed that your term of office as President of the PAHF
comes to an end at the Congress to be held on 27 September, 2013, and that
this will mark the end of your official involvement with the Federation.
I am very grateful indeed to Aaron that he informed me of this momentous
event and afforded me the opportunity of sending my greetings to you.
Your have made an invaluable contribution to hockey, at all levels, over so
many years - it is impossible in a few short paragraphs to record what you
have done and to adequately express my acknowledgment and appreciation.
I only wish I could be present in Mendoza to tell all my friends in the PAHF
of my positive observations of you since my involvement in FIH, which dates
back many years.
Members of the PAHF should know that you were always a fierce defender,
protector and advocate of hockey in the Pan Am. I remember (fondly) the debates around the FIH Board table when issues that affected Pan Am, particularly those that had the potential to have an adverse impact, were discussed,
and how you spoke passionately in support of your Federation and all its
members. You always actively participated in discussions on subjects such as
quotas/qualification for Olympic Games and World Cups, especially defending
the rights of teams from Pan Am and other smaller Continental Federations.
Not surprisingly (to me) your arguments were always sound and mostly you
persuaded the Board of the validity of your point of view.
This is not to say that the only issues that you were involved in were those
that affected Pan Am, quite the contrary. Your love of the game and your
vision of hockey, world-wide, were always your motivation and I want you
to know that we all valued your views - when you spoke, we always listened.
You had a vast reservoir of knowledge of sport in general and hockey in
particular which you so freely and generously gave to the eternal benefit of
FIH and especially the members of the Executive Board, the FIH staff and the
Committees. I particularly valued your wise counsel and your support for me,
especially during my term of office as Hon. Secretary General.
I have a great respect and admiration for you. The longer we served FIH and
hockey together, the closer we drew to each other. Our views consistently
coincided on most issues and, on the very few occasions that we differed, it
was nevertheless with the utmost respect.
I am not qualified to make a complete assessment of your contribution to
the PAHF, that is for your members and others more closely involved than
me, however, I am sure that you will be recorded in the annals of the PAHF
as one of its greatest contributors. What I can say, however, is that no-one in
my time made a greater contribution to FIH and world hockey than you and
it was my pleasure to witness first-hand what you did and my pleasure and
honour to be able to record these few thoughts on this momentous occasion.
I recall with good memories and great fondness some of those who have
gone before, men and women who served our sport with great distinction,
such as Etienne, Phil, Els and others. You are no less in the same category.
Hockey is the richer for your involvement and contribution.
Evelyn joins me in wishing you well for many years of health and happiness.
Our only regret is that physical distance separates us and prevents us seeing
you more frequently.
You and Maria Elena are always in our thoughts.

I met Mr. Antonio Von Ondarza when I was a young
hockey player representing my country for the first time
at the Junior PAHF Championships in Trinidad in 1988.
Tony was of course already the President of the PAHF
yet still took the time to interact with us players which
left a lasting impression on me and my colleagues. Over
our many years of association in the administration of
hockey, Tony has been a pillar of support to hockey in
Guyana and the region. While we sorely regret this loss
upon his retirement, we at least can appreciate the many
years of service that he has given to hockey both in the
region and globally. Hockey has benefitted tremendously
from the work of Tony and we are grateful to have had
him leading the PAHF for so many years.
On behalf of the Guyana Hockey Board I wish to salute
Tony for his many years of dedicated service to the game
and we hope to still see him around at international
hockey events.

Dear Tony,
After being in the PAHF for so long there is much to remember and write about. However this is
a short note to say how much I appreciate your work for the PAHF over the years. It has been a
pleasure to have been be your colleague and friend in working for the sport over several projects.
I appreciate your leadership skills and team building abilities that have resulted in moving the
PAHF to the position it has today in the world of field hockey.
Your wisdom and vision for the PAHF has resulted in the successful completion of various
projects. I recognize and appreciate your performance and contribution to the PAHF. Your
efforts will be nothing short of legendary as the PAHF moves into the future.
Best wishes to you and Maria Elena in the upcoming years and I look forward to seeing you
somewhere in the future to reminisce about the good old days.

Dear Tony ,
I could write about all the meetings we had, or had to go to, or
about the travels we made for hockey or IOC sessions , about holidays our families spend together, about tournaments and Olympic
Games or about official and other special dinners but I would like to
tell you how I feel about our friendship .
Sometimes it is hard to express in words how we truly feel
to have a friend like you I have really felt blessed.
For our friendship feels real
this I have appreciated over the years,
Ramona and Marie Helena are of course included in this feeling.
Looking back it’s now for more than 30 years
that we have shared challenges and happy and sad moments.
Your loyalty has meant much to Eric and to me
the best and most beautiful things in the world can’t often been
seen or touched ,
they must be felt with the heart.
But I have tried to express it in words !

TRIBUTE TO TONY VON ONDARZA – President Pan American Hockey Federation
It is with deep regret I cannot be with you in person at the Pan American Hockey Federation
Congress, in Mendoza. Please accept these words as they would have been shared with a smile
and a hug and much warmth.
We have two proverbs that are often quoted here in New Zealand and I thought they summed up my
interactions with Tony.
He aha te mea nui o te ao?
He tangata! He tangata! He tangata!
What is the most important thing in the world?
It is people! It is people! It is people!
Tony, your contribution to Hockey in your own Continent and globally cannot be understated. The
length and breadth of your service is simply incomparable. I congratulate you on all you have
achieved and acknowledge that without people like you, willing to put in the time and the work, our
Hockey family would be the poorer.

This proverb speaks to the need for collaboration and sharing – as a new Continental Federation
President joining the International Hockey Federation Executive Board was a daunting task. I would
like to thank you personally for sharing your immense knowledge and your support of me in my role
as Oceania President and as an Executive Board member. Each of our Continents are different
however at the heart of all of them is the desire and love to play Hockey, to grow the game in each
country and to improve the performance of each of our members activities.
The change of Constitution in 2010 could easily have been a time when the strength of the
Continents were lost and I wish to acknowledge the work you did to help ensure that the place of the
Continental Federations remained in the Executive Board.
I wish you all the best as you step down from this role and look forward to seeing you as we no doubt
will continue to do so at Hockey events in the future.

Hoy queremos dejar constancia del gran aporte que a la salud y a la diversión hemos
recibido de TONY, a quien gracias a su gestión, somos parte de tan importante familia, la
Familia Hockey de América y que nos alentó a seguir materializando esfuerzos para
desarrollar el hockey en Panamá.

TRIBUTO A TONY
Es muy sencillo para mi extender consideraciones para la larga y exitosa
carrera de Tony como dirigente. Lo conoci alla por el ano 1971 cuando eramos
ya casi veteranos en el Caracas Sport Club y el San Fernando de Argentina. Se
inicio una gran amistad que perdura mas alla de los tiempos.
Pero a la vez, me dio la posibilidad de aprender otras cosas que no fueran las
de jugar al hockey, y ser coach.
Asi comence una etapa de mi vida, integrando las comisiones de coaching y
luego la de desarrollo en la Federacion Panamericana. En esta ultima comsion
tuve el honor de haber sido designado como CDO de la FIH.
Es tambien muy dificil, sintetizar las tareas llevadas a cabo y en esta ocasion
se
torna irrelevante hablar de ellas. Pero lo debo hacer, porque todo lo bien
que pude haber hecho ha sido la consecuencia de alternar por mas de 20
anos, con los miembros del Board y Comisiones de la PAHF y FIH. Excelentes
personas que me proporcionaron toda clase de instrucciones, consejos y el
espiritu para recorrer un camino correcto en el deporte, a traves de la mano
de TONY

La amistad, como dije anteriormente seguira por siempre pero, haciendo
de lado este sentimiento, debo decir que desde su primera presidencia en la
PAHF, solo fui testigo de una conduccion ferrea , capacitada y brillante, que
ha propiciado a lo largo de tantos anos un desarrollo paulatino y sustentable,
que nos muestra hoy la cantidad de paises afiliados a la PAHF y FIH.
El de Tony, ha sido un periodo imposible de olvidar para todos los paises.
Una cantidad de enormes dirigentes que lo acompanaron en su gestion,
merecen tambien este reconcimiento.
Ha sido un honor y privilegio para mi, haber sido considerado para
acompanarlo, en su gestion.
En cuanto a la amistad continuara fortaleciendose a traves de los rum punch
y pisco sour que me enseno a tomarlos, junto a los amigos, adversarios y por
supuesto con su magnifica familia.

Estimado Tony; en el transcurso de los años, de paso
en este bello deporte, hemos encontrado todo tipo de
alegrias y caidas, la alegría de los amigos, la ingrata
tarea de hacer para beneficio de la colectividad
y en tu caso para este deporte, contamos muchas
de tus acciones y las más importantes son las de
agradecimiento a innumerables ocasiones que junto
con María Elena, nos apoyaste, en lo particular,
aprendía a politizar lo bueno y soslayar lo malo, en
este camino recibí siempre tu atención y respeto, quizá
no una o varias, no coincidí con tus directrices, tuviste
la capacidad para solventarla y seguir adelante,
dándoles mayor valor a las cosas positivas, fueron
muchos años de este bregar, muchas veces en contra
marea.
Amigo lleva por siempre el agradecimiento de Mario
Sevilla, el recuerdo y respeto, disfruta la vida que bien
ganado tienes un descanso activo por tu inquietud de
ser.

Hoy , 27 de Septiembre en la Ciudad de Mendoza, Argentina en
el dia de tú retiro y darte el saludo de mi parte como tambien el
muy bien merecido Homenaje que todos los actuales dirigentes
de la PAHF, y Ex dirigentes de nuestras Asociaciones que hemos
representado, no puedo restarme de darte las gracias por todo lo
que has hecho especialmente para el Hockey Americano y Mundial
primero como Presidente de la PAHF y Ex Vice Presidente de la FIH
en tus largos años de “ full” dedicación para poder ayudar y apoyar
a todos nosotros en poder desarollar nuestro querido deporte con
sus mejores orientaciones , que en el caso particular de Chile,en la
cual fuí Presidente por muchos años,siempre recibi de vuestra parte
los mejores consejos y dirección para poder hacer los trabajos y
Torneos que nos prestigiaron enormemente.
Tony,fuistes un gran amigo y Presidente de todos
nosotros,alomejor muchas veces incomprendido,pero al final
del dia, muy agradecidos,porque siempre en forma muy leal
y deportiva,nos apoyastes fuertemente y en eso soy un gran
agradecido ya que los resultados en mi gestion como Presidente
de la Federación Chilena de Hockey,se hicieron grandes eventos
como un Mundial,un Preolimpico, Panamericanos, SudAmericanos,
4 Naciones y tantos otros eventos que con vuestros consejos y sus
apoyos , realizamos y llegamos a “ buen Puerto”.
Se que en estos momentos vendrán en tus mentes tantas cosas y
recordar todo lo que hicistes como un gran Presidente de la PAHF,
que se inicio en 1987, y que tuve la suerte de acompañarte en
esa primera gestión como parte del directorio, y te mantuvistes
exitosamente hasta el dia de hoy que has anunciado tú retiro, y
que coincide tambien de haberte acompañado en éste directorio,
cuando asumí 4 años atrás.
y de todos nosotros,y en la cuál siempre mostró su gran capacidad
organizativa en los congresos,en la misma PAHF,en dar las mejores
orientaciones a cada uno de nosotros, y que hoy y con mucha gratitud
reconozco y doy las gracias por ella,que sin lugar a dudas,muchas
cosas no hubiese sido capaz de hacer sin sus buenas acciones.
Tony,podria seguir mucho más ,pero hemos sido informado que el
homenaje que cada uno te estamos dando es limitado en la escritura
por ello , solo darte las “ miles “ de gracias y que siempre tengas el gran
recuerdo de todos los que estuvimos al lado tuyo, como entender que
nuestras intenciones fué de hacer actividad de seguir tus buenos y
sanos consejos y ojalá entender que éra nuestra mejor intención de
hacerla.
Muchas gracias y ten por seguro que JAMAS se NOS BORRARA
de nuestras mentes tú GRAN Y EXITOSA GESTION DIRIGENCIAL y

Your retirement from the world of International
Hockey will leave a huge gap in so many ways.
At the Regional level, you have been a strong
force and in a lot of cases, instrumental in the development
phases of hockey in countries where support (both financial and
administrative) and encouragement were needed. Because of your
wonderful background in business and sport, you brought to the table
experience and knowledge from countries where the needs were
often larger than our sport, but you were able to envisage the positive
feelings that men, women and children would experience playing
the game even at the most basic level. I am sure there are literally
hundreds within Pan Am Hockey, who over the years, have very fond
memories of the opportunities you as their leader organised and
frequently orchestrated so that they could travel and play.
This background in business and finance coupled with first hand
knowledge of most member countries, has also been of huge benefit
to FIH. I first experienced this as a Board member and later as VicePresident and will always be grateful for the truthfulness, honesty
and strength shown on many occasions. Your term on the board and
then as Vice President of FIH, brought with it a global perspective of
the game and a committed willingness to assist at any level in any
capacity. You have helped to maintain a balance of ideas, and a vision
to the needs of the future in the competitive world of sport. Your
loyalty to your friends in hockey is appreciated.
World Hockey has been all the richer for your involvement, and in
particular Pan Am hockey. Whilst we all have to retire at some stage,
you can happily feel your contribution has been huge and you have
the respect of the hockey world for many years to come.
As the representative for Oceania and Hockey Australia, I knew I
could depend on you for good advice, honest concern when needed,
and a sincerity and friendship, for which Hockey Australia will always
be thankful.
Personally, I feel saddened by the knowledge of your impending
retirement, but I do wish you a happy, healthy and relaxed future.

Los niños, jóvenes, mujeres y hombres, de esta media isla, llamada
República Dominicana, plagada , de amor y cariño, por sus cuatro
costados y de seres humanos, amorosos, humildes , pero gallardos y
valientes, hacemos llegar a usted , Don Tony, un gran GRACIAS, ya que
recibimos con mucha alegría, y bastante , entrega sus atenciones, y su
esfuerzo, para que esta hermosa disciplina HOCKEY, se practicara en
nuestro, país,
Amigo Tony, creemos que jamás, en su hermosa trayectoria de
dirigente deportivo, le había tocado, lidiar , con personas , como
nuestro presidente y hermano, Rafael Sosa Nolasco, sin embargo,
tampoco creemos que en su larga y fructífera trayectoria, haya
tratado, con una persona, como el antes mencionado, que le admire ,
respete y agradezca , su extraordinario esfuerzo.
Dios nuestro señor, será responsable de darles larga y saludable
vida, porque usted , se la merece, para la Federación Dominicana de
hockey, usted estará eternamente en nuestros corazones, Tony, CON
SINCERIDAD,
Muchas cosas recuerdo de Tony. Su profesionalidad, sus consejos y su
amistad, son las mas relevantes.
Su gran interes para que la Republica Dominicana fuera dotada de
una cancha de hockey con el nivel para la celebracion de los Juegos
Panamericanos de Santo Domingo.
Gracias al apoyo logistico de la PAHF, desde mucho antes de comenzar los juegos, hoy existe una cancha y un Estadio que es ejemplo para
las Americas.
Ademas, durante estos juegos me brindo un gran soporte y apoyo,
para que yo, en mi posicion de Presidente de la Federacion Dominicana, saliera de la mejor manera posible en el montaje de ese importante Torneo y quiero resaltar, que cada vez que nos reunimos, con
los miembros del CON y Comite Organizador, el fue un gran defensor
de la construcion de la cancha en Santo Domingo. En esos tiempos se
comentaba que habia una fuerte tenden- cia para que el hockey sobre
cesped se jugara en una sub sede que podia ser Puerto Rico.
Nos tuvo confianza y creo que la distinguimos con un trabajo arduo
y beneficioso para la juventud de nuestro pais, que se preparaba para
tan magnifico acontecimiento.
Gracias Tony por todo lo que le distes al hockey de las Americas y en
especial a nuestro principiante hockey.

Federación Cubana de Hockey sobre Césped
En nombre de toda la familia, de los federativos, atletas y directivos
quiere expresarle al señor Antonio Vonondarza presidente de la Federación Panamericana de Hockey su agradecimiento por toda la ayuda
y apoyo brindada en todos estos años. Además decirle que gracias a
su apoyo y colaboración pudimos celebrar en nuestra patria juegos
Centroamericanos, Panamericanos y la 1ra Copa América, además de
poder contar por 1ra vez en el año 1991 con cancha artificial que sirvió
para elevar el nivel de nuestro Hockey. Decirle que estamos eternamente agradecidos y que en nuestra patria tiene grandes admiradores
y le deseamos muchos éxitos en sus nuevas tareas eternamente agradecido.

Amor no es dar parte de lo que hemos recibido, si no dar todo lo que
tenemos.
No es tener las antenas despiertas a la sensibilidad, sino al corazón
dispuesto para el dolor.
No es lo que nos viene bien en determinado momento de la vida, es
lo que escogemos para siempre como centro vital de la existencia.
No es solamente ser humanos, sino comprender qué se ha infiltrado
en nosotros algo sobre natural y divino.
El amor es así atadura de cuerpo y espíritu, material divino y humano.
Así lo queremos y así estará presente para siempre en nuestros corazones.
Tribute to Tony von Ondarza
Having served as a Director of PAHF it was indeed a pleasure working with Tony Von Ondarzo
who was very supportive of the efforts undertaken by the Jamaica Women’s Hockey Federation
and the Jamaica Hockey Federation under my leadership, to include the merger of the Jamaica
Women’s and Men’s Hockey Associations into what is now recognized as the Jamaica Hockey
Federation; the acquisition of the first artificial turf in Jamaica and the hosting of the first
Caribbean Championship Tournament here in Jamaica.
Tony’s impact in hockey is not only felt in the Pan American region but throughout the entire
hockey world and he will be missed for his dedication and support to the development of Field
Hockey.
Retirement does not mean that he should step away completely as he still has a lot of expertise
and experience to offer others who are there to blaze a train in the sport of field hockey in the
region and throughout the hockey world.
I take this opportunity to wish him all the best in his future endeavours.

Un viernes repleto de alegría (Cuba)
Granma 31/10/1998, en la página. 7, diario en el cual durante muchos
años resultaron frecuentes sus esclarecedoras declaraciones.
A través de mi pasada actividad en la dirigencia de la confederación Argentina de Hockey tuve la oportunidad de conocer
a ese caballero que es Tony Von Ondarza. Con el se estableció
una cordial y afectuosa relación,que llego a exceder lo simplemente deportivo para crear un lazo de amistad que perdura
en el tiempo y supera la distancia.
En el desempeño de elevadas funciones en los principales
organismos rectores del hockey, la presencia de Von Ondarza
fue permanente en el deporte argentino. Con capacidad de
dialogo, claridad de objetivos y un amplio concepto de la dirigencia, su gestión nos represento un significativo aporte que
posibilito en mucas oportunidades la concreción de iniciativas
vinculadas con nuestra actividad internacional y con el crecimiento y desarrollo de nuestro deporte.
Sentir amigo a Tony es un privilegio y un honor.

Una buena parte de la familia del hockey sobre césped cubano, ¡todos los que se enteraron ayer..!, tuvieron un viernes repleto de alegría:
la nueva cancha sintética se montará en diciembre, en la histórica plaza
de Santiago de las Vegas, y un poco después trabajará aquí brevemente
un entrenador muy calificado.
Las noticias se consolidaron en la mañana tras una provechosa reunión
en el Coliseo de la Ciudad Deportiva entre Humberto Rodríguez, titular del INDER; Antonio von Ondarza, presidente de la Federación Panamericana de Hockey, y vice de la internacional (FIH); José M. González
Cortina, comisionado nacional, y Sebastian Karrer, gerente director de
la firma alemana Polytan.
Ondarza, en entrevista exclusiva para los lectores de Granma, explicó
algunos detalles interesantes de lo conversado.
¿Sí, se acaban de redondear los objetivos de nuestra visita. Los planes
son que se empiece a laborar inmediatamente, la próxima semana.
Se va a levantar la vieja cancha. Se está valorando sacar los mejores
pedazos y montarlos en otra provincia. Acto seguido se hará una reparación de la base asfáltica, rellenarla, nivelarla, hacer otros trabajos en
el estadio, como techos que se fueron volando por los vientos, o en
las cercas... Y simultáneamente la fábrica alemana Polytan comenzará a
trabajar en el producto que se instalará aquí?.
La calidad de la superficie, a propósito, es de primera línea:
¿Es una cancha con tecnología nueva, en lugar de nylon, como la que
se montó aquí en 1991, posee otros materiales que la hacen más resistente al calor, consume menos agua, es más duradera. La pista es el
resultado de un plan en el cual el financiamiento corre por el Comité
Olímpico Internacional (COI), la FIH y el INDER?.
Y entonces, tras una necesaria pausa, continuó dando noticias:
¿Los planes son que tengamos la nueva cancha montada en diciembre,
y el propio Juan Antonio Samaranch, presidente del COI, ha mostrado
su interés en estar presente en la inauguración?.
Humberto Rodríguez aprovechó el encuentro para expresar el reconocimiento del Movimiento Deportivo Cubano al señor Von Ondarza por
su apoyo oportuno y desinteresado al hockey sobre césped en nuestro
país por más de una década.

Dear Tony,
When I reported to the Policy Board of BDO on my trip to Perth at the
end of 2002 I mentioned that I had discovered a new family, a family
made up of many different individuals from all over the world who had
one thing in common: their passion for hockey. The name of the family
was FIH.
During the eight years of BDO’s FIH hockey sponsorship Chris and I
have made many friends, but only a handful have become real good
friends. One of them is you Tony. We have had the great pleasure of
getting to know you and Maria Elena at the hockey events around the
world, but in particular during the trips we made together in India, Chile
and Argentina. We shared unforgettable moments in Delhi, Agra and
Jaipur, in Santiago, Puerto Varas, Chiloé, Punta Arenas, Puerto Natales,
Torres del Paine, Cueva del Milodón, on the Skorpios boat sailing the
Chilean fjords with the Kaweskar and during the trip crossing the Andes
from Santiago to Mendoza. It is fair to say that most of the preparations
for these trips were done by Maria Elena but on the trip to the Lagos
region and Chiloé you made yourself indispensible and irreplaceable as
Taxi Tony!
Dear Tony, many, many thanks for these great moments OF FRIENDSHIP
AND WE HOPE TO STAY IN TOUCH AFTER YOUR RETIREMENT FROM
THE FIH.
