Gospel Reading: Luke 10:38-42
Jesus entered a village
where a woman whose name was Martha welcomed him.
She had a sister named Mary
who sat beside the Lord at his feet listening to him speak.
Martha, burdened with much serving, came to him and said,
“Lord, do you not care
that my sister has left me by myself to do the serving?
Tell her to help me.”
The Lord said to her in reply,
“Martha, Martha, you are anxious and worried about many things.
There is need of only one thing.
Mary has chosen the better part
and it will not be taken from her.”

From the Pastor • Del Pastor
Dear Friends of St. Louise,
Queridos Amigos de Santa Luisa:
Later this month you will see the walkway to
the main entrance to the church building
being resurfaced. It will not only be more
attractive, it will also be safer for those who
use mobility aids like walkers, wheelchairs
or canes. The money for this project came
from our rebate from the 2015 Annual
Catholic Appeal. Thank you to everyone
who made a contribution last year. You not only helped to
support the 62 ministries of the Archdiocese, you also helped
our parish.
Ustedes no
solamente apoyaron los 62 ministerios de la Arquidiócesis,
también ayudaron a nuestra parroquia.
I also want to thank those who have made a pledge for the 2016
Annual Appeal. While we are doing well, we are still behind our
goal – and we don’t get a rebate until we exceed the goal. If you
read the financial updates in the bulletin you’ve probably noticed
that we don’t have as many people participating in the Annual
Catholic Appeal this year as compared to this time last year.
The rebate money that we hope to collect from this year’s
Annual Catholic Appeal will be donated to the New Bethlehem
Project, the new daytime shelter on the Eastside that St. Louise
is helping to establish with the leadership of Holy Family Parish,
Kirkland, and in partnership with Catholic Community Services
as well as other faith communities and organizations on the
Eastside.
This weekend we will offer a reminder about the Annual
Catholic Appeal at all the Masses. The envelopes are in the
pews.
Thank you for your pledge and for supporting the ministries of
our Archdiocese – and the New Bethlehem Project – through
the Annual Catholic Appeal.
Sincerely in Christ,
Fr. Gary Zender
2
Padre Gary Zender

Youth Confirmation at St. Louise
Are you a youth interested in receiving the sacrament of Confirmation at St. Louise?
Please note that St. Louise now requires at least ONE year of previous faith formation before enrollment
in our year-long Confirmation preparation course! This structure invites our youth to invest in their
parish and learn more about the faith community to which they are committing before beginning their
year of sacrament-specific instruction. Therefore, if you are at least a sophomore in high school and
would like to begin sacrament-specific preparation for Confirmation, please be sure that you have been
active in at least one of the following faith formation programs approved by the Archdiocese:
• Attendance at 75% of our Sunday evening youth ministry programming for the 2015-2016 year.
• Enrollment in a Catholic high school.
• An Archdiocesan-approved faith formation curriculum in the home.
Please see our page on the St. Louise website at http://stlouise.org/152 for more details. Kindly contact Annarose O'Brien-Wilson,
[email protected] or 425-214-5465, with any further questions.

Liturgy, Prayer and Worship
Jubilee Year of Mercy Reflection
SIXTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
Last Sunday’s “Good Samaritan” parable concluded with Jesus’
command: Go provide hands-on mercy to the next person you meet,
no conditions, no limits, no exceptions. But today, Jesus seems to
criticize Martha’s hands-on mercy of hospitality, while praising
Mary’s “hands-off” as “choosing the better part” (Luke 10:42). Mary
sat listening (10:39), leaving Martha “burdened with much serving by
herself” (10:40). So, is the contemplative life of prayerful silence
“superior,” but the active life of earning a living, raising a family,
running parishes, schools, hospitals, and social service ministries
“second-class” discipleship? No; Jesus’ example is not either/or but both/and: silent
communion with God, boundless compassion for people. If we do not seek Jesus in
silent prayer, how will we find Jesus in all others? If we do not serve Jesus in
others, will our worship, despite its beauty, be anything but empty ritual? This
Jubilee Year of Mercy offers us Jesus’ two-fold challenge: both “go and do” and “sit
and listen.” —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.
Sick or Homebound or Going into the Hospital?
If you are scheduled for surgery or know you will be going into the hospital and
would like to be anointed beforehand, please contact Kathy Riley, 425-214-5466,
and she will help arrange for you to be anointed. Also call her if you are homebound
and wish to receive Eucharist from a Minister to the Sick and Homebound or would
like your name on the prayer list. If, in an emergency, you need to see a priest,
please call the answering service for the Eastside Catholic Pastoral Ministry:
206-748-1500. They contact the pastoral minister on-call, who will call you back,
come to see you, and if you wish, put your name on the list of Catholic patients in the
hospital. Current federal guidelines (HIPAA) are intended to protect the privacy of
patients in the hospital. This means that the hospital will not give out any information
about its patients. The only way we can know that someone is in the hospital and
wants the visit of a Eucharistic Minister or chaplain is if YOU tell us.

Stewardship Reflection
16th Sunday in Ordinary Time
“…I am a minister in accordance with God’s stewardship given
to me to bring to completion for you the word of
God.” Colossians 1:25
Believe it or not, we are all called to evangelize – to
continuously grow in our knowledge and relationship with Jesus
and to share it with others. We may not be called to evangelize
like St. Paul, but we should look for opportunities to share our
faith with those closest to us, like our family and friends.
——————————————————————
16 ° domingo del tiempo ordinario
"... Yo soy un ministro, de acuerdo con el encargo de Dios que
me ha dado de anunciar la palabra de Dios." Colosenses 1:25
Lo creas o no, todos estamos llamados a evangelizar - a crecer
continuamente en nuestro conocimiento y relación con Jesús y
compartirlo con otros. Podemos no ser llamados a evangelizar
como San Pablo, pero deberíamos buscar oportunidades para
compartir nuestra fe con quienes tenemos más cerca, como
nuestra familia y amigos.

Thank you to all who have responded to the needs of our

accomplish all that needs to be done for the more than 60
ministries and services of the Annual Catholic Appeal.
Gifts of any amount are welcome; your gift will make
everything possible. It is not too late to pledge or donate, if you
haven’t already done so! Return your pledge envelope today or
donate online: www.seattlearchdiocese.org/donate. Be sure to
note St. Louise as your parish.
