Jesus said to his disciples: “Thus it is written that the Christ would
suffer and rise from the dead on the third day and that repentance, for
the forgiveness of sins, would be preached in his name to all the nations,
beginning from Jerusalem.
You are witnesses of these things. And behold I am sending the promise
of my Father upon you; but stay in the city until you are clothed with
power from on high.” Then he led them out as far as Bethany, raised his
hands, and blessed them. As he blessed them he parted from them and
was taken up to heaven. They did him homage and then returned to
Jerusalem with great joy, and they were continually in the temple
praising God.

padecerá, resucitará de entre los muertos al tercer día y en su nombre se

Después los sacó hacia Betania y, levantando las manos, los bendijo. Y
mientras los bendecía se separó de ellos, subiendo hacia el cielo. Ellos se
postraron ante él y se volvieron a Jerusalén con gran alegría; y estaban
siempre en el templo bendiciendo a Dios.
Comentario
Brief commentary
Three great feasts mark the Easter season: Easter, Ascension and
Pentecost. Today’s feast of the Ascension of the Lord fills us with joy
and hope, as it did for the disciples. The readings all describe the
meaning of Christ’s Ascension, of his glorious exaltation at the ‘right
hand of the Father’. By returning to the Father from whom he had
come, Jesus is ‘lifted up and draws us to himself’ (John 12:32). In glory
Jesus Christ is powerfully present to each of us and to the whole
Church: “Wherever two or more are gathered in my name, I will be
there in their midst...I will be with you to the end of the age.” The
Catechism of the Catholic Church describes the significance of Jesus’
heavenly ministry succinctly, but powerfully: “
Jesus Christ, having entered the sanctuary of heaven once and for all,
intercedes constantly for us as the mediator who assures us of the
permanent outpouring of the Holy Spirit” (CCC #667). In parallel to
Luke’s ascension story in the Acts of the Apostles, we read today about
Jesus’ ascension from Luke’s other shorter version of the story found in
his gospel. In both cases Jesus gives his disciples instructions to wait in
Jerusalem until they are “clothed with power from on high...the
promise of my Father.” This power, this promise, is none other than the
Holy Spirit, who will empower them to become the “witnesses” of Jesus
and his gospel starting in Jerusalem and reaching to the ends of the
Earth. The Holy Spirit, gift of the Risen Lord, also empowers all
Christians and the Church for mission in the world. This concise but
dense gospel reading mentions the most important gifts that come to us
as a result of Jesus’ passion death, resurrection and ascension:
repentance for the forgiveness of sins, the Holy Spirit, the new
community, and great joy. The ascension is not the conclusion of Jesus’
mission, but rather its universal expansion in and through the Church,
filled and living with his Spirit. Through the Sacraments the Holy Spirit
empowers us to live our mission as Jesus’ witnesses and apostles of his
saving Gospel with authenticity and boldness.
Tres grandes fiestas marcan los cincuenta días de Pascua de Resurrección:
domingo de Resurrección, Ascensión y Pentecostés. La gran fiesta de hoy,
la Ascensión del Señor, nos llena de gozo y esperanza, como fue para los
discípulos. Las lecturas todas describen el significado de la ascensión de
Cristo, de su exaltación ‘a la derecha del Padre’. En retornando al Padre
de donde había procedido, Jesús ‘es levantado en alto y nos atrae hacia
el’ (Juan 12:32). En la gloria Jesucristo esta poderosamente presenta a
cada uno de nosotros y de su Iglesia entera: “Donde haya dos o más
reunidos en mi nombre, allí estaré en su presencia...estaré con vosotros
hasta el fin de los tiempos.” El Catecismo de la Iglesia Católica describe el
significado del ministerio de Jesús diciendo: “Jesucristo, habiendo entrado
en el santuario celestial de una vez para siempre, intercede
constantemente por nosotros como el mediador que nos asegura el
permanente don del Espíritu Santo” (CIC #667). En paralelo al relato de
la ascensión de Lucas en el libro de los Hechos de Los Apóstoles, leemos
hoy sobre la ascensión de Jesús encontrada en la otra versión de Lucas
mas abreviada en su evangelio. En los dos relatos Jesús les instruye a sus
discípulos a permanecer en Jerusalén hasta que sean “vestidos con poder
de lo alto...la promesa de mi Padre.” Este poder, esta promesa, es no
menos que el Espíritu Santo, quien los fortalecerá a los discípulos para que
se conviertan en “testigos” de Jesús y de su evangelio, comenzando en
Jerusalén y llegando hasta los confines del mundo.
El Espíritu Santo, don del Señor resucitado, también fortalece a todos los
cristianos y a la Iglesia para misión en el mundo. Este evangelio, conciso
pero denso, menciona los dones más importantes que nos llegan como el
resultado de la pasión, muerte, resurrección y ascensión de Jesús:
arrepentimiento para el perdón de los pecados, el Espíritu Santo, la nueva
comunidad, y gran gozo. La ascensión no es la conclusión de la misión de
Jesús, sino su expansión universal en y a través de la Iglesia, llena y

GUIDELINES TO RECEIVE COMMUNION
NORMAS PARA COMULGAR
The are two ways to receive Communion, in the hand
or on the tongue. Neither one is better than the other.
Hay dos formas de recibir la Comunión, en la
mano o en la lengua. Ninguna es mejor que otra.
In the hand: Place the right hand under
the left hand, as if forming a crib. Raise
both hands at chest level. As soon as the
host is placed on the hand, take it with the
right hand and place it inside your mouth.
Left-handed people place the left hand
under the right hand.
On the tongue: Put out your tongue to allow the
minister to place the host on top. It is difficult and
not hygienic when people open the mouth a little bit
and don’t put out their tongue.
Communion has the same exact value if administered
by the priest or by an extraordinary minister. There is
nothing that can add value to the Body of Christ.
