Year of Mercy—Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Friday:
Dedication of the Basilica
“You fool, this night your life will be demanded of you” (Luke 12:20). Hardly
of St. Mary Major; First
sounds like mercy! Unlike some contemporary rich folks, there is no indication of
Friday
lying, stealing, or cheating in Jesus’ parable. The rich man made a living, not a
Saturday: The Transfiguration of
the Lord; First Saturday killing. Why does Jesus name him “fool”? First, because of presumption. Five
times in nine verses, the rich man declares, “I shall.” God’s not in charge here, I
am! Second, selfishness—four times, “my/myself.” No God, no neighbor; he talks
to himself, about himself: my possessions, my productivity, my plans! So, instead
of chasing “treasure for ourselves,” Jesus and Pope Francis’ Jubilee Y ear of Mercy
bid us grow “rich in what matters to God” (12:21), namely, the corporal and spiritual works of mercy. Give food, drink, clothing, and healing; visit the imprisoned;
bury the dead. Heal with Jesus’ own gentleness the doubt, ignorance, and sins of
others; comfort, forgive, be patient; and pray for the living and dead.

From the Pastor
To the parish family of St. Martha,
On this 18th Sunday in Ordinary Time we encounter a startling challenge in our first reading from
the Book of Ecclesiates. In essence the text seems to ask: “Is life worth living?” Today’s reading
tells us that much of our lives can be tainted with vanity. It suggests that there is not much at all that is worth
the trouble, expense, and worry that we so often spend our time doing. The Gospel text from Luke addresses a similar theme with the parable of the rich man who had worked so hard and gained so much and in the
end his efforts were all for nothing. Despite the sense that all is so discouraging, the Scripture readings are
not as gloomy and cynical as they may seem. They are really inviting us to reflect realistically on our lives
and our endeavors and seek some balance and perspective concerning the direction we are heading. The
second reading from Paul to the Colossians gives us a very practical and positive challenge, “Think of what
is above, not of what is on earth.”
Thus, the important question is this: “What is worth doing in the life God has given us?” What is worth
the investment of our time, talent, and treasure? We know clearly from the Scriptures that material possessions and love of money are not worth all the trouble and attention that some people give to them. They
simply do not last. It is not that material possessions and human comforts are bad or evil in themselves. It is
just that they can never satisfy the deepest longings of the human person. Jesus tells us to store up
“treasures in heaven.” What might some of these treasures be? At the heart of meaningful Christian living
and discipleship is a deep and growing relationship with God. Such a relationship is nourished by Sunday
Eucharist, deepened by daily prayer, and strengthened by reflection on the Word of God. A vital relationship
with God leads also to lasting relationships with others. This involves the Church and helps us to invest ourselves as the Body of Christ in the building up of the Kingdom of God here on earth. This requires saying
“Yes” to the commitment we made at our Baptism and becoming actively involved in the mission
the Lord Jesus gave to the Church. When we do so, Paul tells us that “Christ is all in all” and we
experience deep joy and a sense of fulfillment in life. In a few weeks each member of our parish
will be invited to renew his or her commitment to this stewardship way of life by pledging their time,
talent, and treasure to help with this mission. Let’s spend some time during the coming weeks reflecting on how God is calling us at this time in our lives.

All work done by stewards is important. No job
is too menial or too insignificant to be part of
God’s plan.
Stewards use their work for the greater glory
of God, in partnership with God.
All that we do is part of our conscious effort to
collaborate with God in the fulfillment of creation.
Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration
“Could you not watch one hour with Me?” Mark 14:37
Our parish is incredibly blessed to have Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration
available in our adoration chapel twenty-four hours a day. Jesus dwells in
the Blessed Sacrament because of His infinite love for each one of us,
and He is always present there in the Blessed Sacrament patiently waiting for us to come and spend time with Him.
Listed below are hours that are most in need of adorers at this time.
However, please note that no hour is really ever “filled” because parishioners are always invited to choose an hour that works best for them, regardless of whether or not there are other adorers already there in prayer.
Both regular adorers and substitutes are needed at this time. Even if you
do not have a regular hour, please feel free to visit our Blessed Lord at
any time knowing that He is always waiting for us with joyful anticipation.
OPEN HOUR: TUESDAY 1-2AM
Second adorers are needed for the following hours:
Sunday: 1-2 AM, 3-4 PM. Monday: 5-6 PM, 10-11 PM. Tuesday; 23AM, 7-8 AM. Wednesday: 1-2AM, 5-6 PM. Friday: 1-2 AM, 6-7 PM.
Saturday: 1-2 AM, 3-4 AM, 9-10 AM, Noon-1 PM, 7-8 PM, 8-9 PM.
If you are interested in participating in this ministry or would like more
information, please contact Robyn Laumbach at either 281-360-7897 or
[email protected]. If you need a substitute, please call one of
our division leaders: Robyn Laumbach at 281-360-7897 for Midnight6 AM, Karen Ehlig at 281-361-7127 for 6 AM-Noon, Annunciata Hopkins at 281-360-1258 for Noon-6 PM, and Beth Beckham at 281-4351439 for 6 PM-Midnight.

Forming Consciences For Faithful Citizenship
In the words of Pope Francis, “progress in building a people in peace, justice and fraternity depends on four principles related to
constant tensions present in every social reality.” The four principles include the dignity of the human person, the common good,
subsidiarity, and solidarity.
The Common Good
The common good is comprised of “the sum total of social conditions which allow people, either as groups
or as individuals, to reach their fulfilment more fully and more easily”.
Human dignity is respected and the common good is fostered only if human rights are protected and basic
responsibilities are met. Every human being has a right to life, a right to religious freedom, and a right to access those
things required for human decency— food and shelter, education and employment, health care and housing. The right
to exercise religious freedom publicly and privately by individuals and institutions along with freedom of conscience need
to be constantly defended. In a fundamental way, the right to free expression of religious beliefs protects all other
rights. Corresponding to these rights are duties and responsibilities—to ourselves, to our families, and to the larger society.
The economy must serve people, not the other way around. An economic system must serve the dignity of the human person and the common good by respecting the dignity of work and protecting the rights of workers. Work is more than a
way to make a living; it is a form of continuing participation in God’s creation. Employers contribute to the common good
through the services or products they provide and by creating jobs that uphold the dignity and rights of workers—to productive work, to decent and just wages, to adequate benefits and security in their old age, to the choice of whether to organize and join unions, to the opportunity for legal status for immigrant workers, to private property, and to economic initiative. Workers also have responsibilities—to provide a fair day’s work for a fair day’s pay, to treat employers and coworkers with respect, and to carry out their work in ways that contribute to the common good. Workers, employers, and
unions should not only advance their own interests but also work together to advance economic justice and the well-being
of all.
We have a duty to care for God’s creation, which Pope Francis refers to in Laudato Si’ as “our common home.” We all are
called to be careful stewards of God’s creation and to ensure a safe and hospitable environment for vulnerable human beings now and in the future. Pope Francis, consistent with St. John Paul II and Pope Benedict XVI (World Day of Peace
messages in 1990 and 2010), has lifted up pollution, climate change, lack of access to clean water, and the loss of biodiversity as particular challenges. Pope Francis speaks of an “ecological debt” (no. 51) owed by wealthier nations to developing
nations. And he calls all of us to an “ecological conversion” (no. 219), by which “the effects of [our] encounter with Jesus
Christ become evident in [our] relationship with the world around [us]”. Indeed, this concern with “natural ecology” is an
indispensable part of the broader “human ecology,” which encompasses not only material, but moral and social dimensions
as well. (The above excerpted from the USCCB document Forming Consciences For Faithful Citizenship)
Questions for your consideration?
What is the state of religious freedom in the United States?
What are we doing to Care for God’s Creation?
