PARISH ACTIVITIES
Dear sisters and brothers in Christ,
This sixth Sunday of Easter falls on May 1, the day when the Church celebrates the memorial of St. Joseph the Worker. It is a
celebration introduced in the liturgical calendar by Pope Pius XII in the 1950s. Of course, the most important feast of St. Joseph
is celebrated on March 19, the Solemnity of St. Joseph, husband of the Blessed Virgin Mary. It was on that day in 2013 that
Pope Francis celebrated the Solemn Mass to mark the beginning of his pontificate and it was also on that day of this year that
he signed the Apostolic Exhortation Amoris Laetitia, that I am summarizing in this column to encourage you to read it in its
entirety.
It is precisely in chapter three on the vocation of the family, that the Pope summarizes the teachings of the Church on marriage
and the family, reminding us first that Jesus restores and fulfills God’s plan for the family by, among other things, being born
of the Virgin Mary and placing himself under the custody
of St. Joseph.

“The incarnation of the Word in a human family, in Nazareth, by its very newness changed the history of the world. We need to
enter into the mystery of Jesus’ birth, into that “yes” given by Mary to the message of the angel, when the Word was conceived
in her womb, as well as the “yes” of Joseph, who gave a name to Jesus and watched over Mary. We need to contemplate the joy
of the shepherds before the manger, the ad- oration of the Magi and the flight into Egypt, in which Jesus shares his people’s
experience of exile, persecution and humiliation. We need to contemplate the religious expectation of Zechariah and his joy at
the birth of John the Baptist, the fulfilment of the promise made known to Simeon and Anna in the Temple and the marvel of
the teachers of the Law who listened to the wisdom of the child Jesus. We then need to peer into those thirty long years when
Jesus earned his keep by the work of his hands, reciting the traditional prayers and expressions of his people’s faith and coming
to know that ancestral faith until he made it bear fruit in the mystery of the Kingdom. This is the mystery of Christmas and the
secret of Nazareth, exuding the beauty of family life!...
The Second Vatican Council, in its Pastoral Constitution Gaudium et Spes, was concerned “to promote the dignity of marriage
and the family”. The Constitution “defined marriage as a community of life and love, placing love at the center of the family...
‘True love between husband and wife’ involves mutual self-giving, includes and integrates the sexual and affective dimensions,
in accordance with God’s plan”. The conciliar document also emphasizes “the grounding of the spouses in Christ. Christ the
Lord ‘makes himself present to the Christian spouses in the sacrament of marriage’ and remains with them. In the incarnation,
he assumes human love, purifies it and brings it to fulfilment. By his Spirit, he gives spouses the capacity to live that love, permeating every part of their lives of faith, hope and charity. In this way, the spouses are consecrated and by means of a special
grace build up the Body of Christ and form a domestic church, so that the Church, in order fully to understand her mystery,
looks to the Christian family, which manifests her in a real way”…

“Saint John Paul II devoted special attention to the family in his catechesis on human love, in his Letter to Families Gratissimam
Sane and particularly in his Apostolic Exhortation Familiaris Consortio. In these documents, the Pope defined the family as ‘the
way of the Church’. He also offered a general vision of the vocation of men and women to love, and proposed basic guidelines for
the pastoral care of the family and for the role of the family in society. In particular, by treating conjugal love, he described how
spouses, in their mutual love, receive the gift of the Spirit of Christ and live their call to holiness”.
“Pope Benedict XVI, in his Encyclical Deus Caritas Est, returned to the topic of the truth of the love of man and woman, which
is fully illuminated only in the love of the crucified Christ. He stressed that ‘marriage based on an exclusive and definitive love
becomes an icon of the relationship between God and his people, and vice versa. God’s way of loving becomes the measure of
human love.’”
St. Joseph the worker, husband of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Guardian of the Redeemer and patron saint of the Universal Church
may obtain for us the grace to continue to journey in fidelity to Christ and the Church and proclaim with our lives, faithfully
and in its entirety, the life-giving Gospel of the family shining with all its splendor in the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph!

“Blessed Paul VI further developed the Church’s teaching on marriage and the family. In a particular way, with the Encyclical
Humanae Vitae he brought out the intrinsic bond between conjugal love and the generation of life: ‘Married love requires of
husband and wife the full awareness of their obligations in the matter of responsible parenthood, which today, rightly enough, is
much insisted upon, but which at the same time must be rightly understood... The exercise of responsible parenthood requires
that husband and wife, keeping a right order of priorities, recognize their own duties towards God, themselves, their families
and human society’
During the now customary encounter between the Popes and journalists on the papal plane as he was returning from his latest
Apostolic Journey to Lesbos in Greece, Pope Francis replied to a question about Amoris Laetitia, stating that he was saddened
and upset by the distortions in the media reporting of the Synod and his Apostolic Exhortation and recommended the commentary by Cardinal Christoph Schonborn during the presentation of the text, in which the Archbishop of Vienna pointed out
that this document ought to be read in continuity with the Magisterium and the tradition of the Church, especially Familiaris
Consortio, the Post-synod Apostolic Exhortation of Pope St. John Paul II, because, as it is evident from the fragments that I offer
this week, it was in them that the Pope found inspiration to elaborate on the conclusions of the Synod of Bishops which does
not break with the doctrine or pastoral practice of the Church, but seeks to nuance, develop and deepen the pastoral guidelines
and indications of the canonized pope.

Queridos hermanos en Cristo:
Este VI domingo de Pascua cae en el día primero de mayo, en que la Iglesia celebra la memoria de san José obrero. Se trata de
una fiesta introducida en el calendario litúrgico por el Papa Pio XII en la década del 50. La fiesta más importante del patrono de
la Iglesia universal se celebra el día 19 de marzo, solemnidad de san José, esposo de la Virgen María. En ese día del año 2013 el
Papa Francisco celebró la Misa de inicio solemne de su pontificado y fue también en ese día de este año que firmó la exhortación
apostólica Amoris Laetitia, cuyo texto estoy resumiendo en esta columna para promover su lectura.
Precisamente en el capítulo tercero sobre la vocación de la familia, el Papa hace una síntesis de la enseñanza de la Iglesia sobre
la familia y el matrimonio, recordando primero que Jesús recupera y lleva a plenitud el proyecto de la familia, justamente porque
nace de la Virgen María y se pone bajo la custodia de san José.
“La encarnación del Verbo en una familia humana, en Nazaret, conmueve con su novedad la historia del mundo. Necesitamos
sumergirnos en el misterio del nacimiento de Jesús, en el sí de María al anuncio del ángel, cuando germinó la Palabra en su
seno; también en el sí de José, que dio el nombre a Jesús y se hizo cargo de María; en la fiesta de los pastores junto al pesebre,
en la adoración de los Magos; en fuga a Egipto, en la que Jesús participa en el dolor de su pueblo exiliado, perseguido y humillado; en la religiosa espera de Zacarías y en la alegría que acompaña el nacimiento de Juan el Bautista, en la promesa cumplida
para Simeón y Ana en el templo, en la admiración de los doctores de la ley escuchando la sabiduría de Jesús adolescente. Y
luego, penetrar en los treinta largos años donde Jesús se ganaba el pan trabajando con sus manos, susurrando la oración y la
tradición creyente de su pueblo y educándose en la fe de sus padres, hasta hacerla fructificar en el misterio del Reino. Este es
el misterio de la Navidad y el secreto de Nazaret, lleno de perfume a familia…
El Concilio Ecuménico Vaticano II, en la Constitución pastoral Gaudium et spes, se ocupó de «la promoción de la dignidad del
matrimonio y la familia». Definió el matrimonio como comunidad de vida y de amor, poniendo el amor en el centro de la familia
[...] El “verdadero amor entre marido y mujer” implica la entrega mutua, incluye e integra la dimensión sexual y la afectividad,
conformemente al designio divino. Además, subraya el arraigo en Cristo de los esposos: Cristo Señor “sale al encuentro de los
esposos cristianos en el sacramento del matrimonio”, y permanece con ellos. En la encarnación, él asume el amor humano,
lo purifica, lo lleva a plenitud, y dona a los esposos, con su Espíritu, la capacidad de vivirlo, impregnando toda su vida de fe,
esperanza y caridad. De este modo, los esposos son consagrados y, mediante una gracia propia, edifican el Cuerpo de Cristo y
constituyen una iglesia doméstica, de manera que la Iglesia, para comprender plenamente su misterio, mira a la familia cristiana, que lo manifiesta de modo genuino»…
Pablo VI profundizó la doctrina sobre el matrimonio y la familia. En particular, con la Encíclica Humanae vitae, puso de relieve
el vínculo íntimo entre amor conyugal y procreación: “El amor conyugal exige a los esposos una conciencia de su misión de
paternidad responsable sobre la que hoy tanto se insiste con razón y que hay que comprender exactamente [...] El ejercicio responsable de la paternidad exige, por tanto, que los cónyuges reconozcan plenamente sus propios deberes para con Dios, para
consigo mismos, para con la familia y la sociedad, en una justa jerarquía de valores”…
«San Juan Pablo II dedicó especial atención a la familia mediante sus catequesis sobre el amor humano, la Carta a las familias
Gratissimam sane y sobre todo con la Exhortación apostólica Familiaris consortio. En esos documentos, el Pontífice definió a
la familia “vía de la Iglesia”; ofreció una visión de conjunto sobre la vocación al amor del hombre y la mujer; propuso las líneas
fundamentales para la pastoral de la familia y para la presencia de la familia en la sociedad. En particular, tratando de la caridad conyugal, describió el modo cómo los cónyuges, en su mutuo amor, reciben el don del Espíritu de Cristo y viven su llamada
a la santidad»…
«Benedicto XVI, en la Encíclica Deus caritas est, retomó el tema de la verdad del amor entre hombre y mujer, que se ilumina
plenamente sólo a la luz del amor de Cristo crucificado. Él recalca que “el matrimonio basado en un amor exclusivo y definitivo
se convierte en el icono de la relación de Dios con su pueblo y, viceversa, el modo de amar de Dios se convierte en la medida del
amor humano.”
En la charla habitual que los papas mantienen con los periodistas en el avión que viajan, en el viaje de regreso de la reciente
visita apostólica a Lesbos en Grecia, al ser consultado sobre Amoris Laetitia, el Papa Francisco afirmó que le daba fastidio y
tristeza ver la tergiversación de los medios de comunicación del contenido de su exhortación apostólica y del sínodo y recomendó
leer la presentación del texto por el cardenal arzobispo de Viena, Christoph Schonborn, quien destacó que este documento debe
leerse en continuidad con el magisterio y la tradición de la Iglesia, especialmente Familiaris Consortio, la exhortación apostólica
post-sinodal del Papa san Juan Pablo II, puesto que, como lo demuestran los fragmentos que ofrezco esta semana, ellos son la
base que le permitió al Papa elaborar las conclusiones del Sínodo de obispos que no produjo una ruptura en la doctrina ni en
la práctica pastoral de la Iglesia, sino que viene a desarrollar, matizar y profundizar los lineamientos pastorales e indicaciones
generales del Papa santo en Familiaris consortio.
¡San José obrero, esposo de la Virgen María, guardián del Redentor y patrono de la Iglesia universal, nos obtenga la gracia para
seguir caminando en fidelidad a Cristo y a la Iglesia, anunciando fielmente e íntegramente con nuestras vidas el mensaje vivificante del Evangelio de la familia que, como nos recuerda constantemente el Papa Francisco, alcanza su máximo esplendor en
la Sagrada Familia de Nazaret de Jesús, María y José!
