VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES & MORE at WESTMINSTER and BEYOND
+Are you involved in a local organization that would like to submit an application to receive funds from the WPC Local Missions
Committee? As you know, the church supports nonprofit organizations our members are involved in, like Urban Ministries, the Food
Bank, Housing for New Hope, the Interfaith Hospitality Network, campus ministries, and others, through our Local Missions budget. To
qualify, the organization should serve a need in the local community, and members of our congregation should be closely involved with the
organization, for example as volunteers or board members. Applications are due by July 15. If you know an organization that might like
to apply, please contact the Local Missions Committee chair, Carol Mansfield, at [email protected].
+Gently-used children’s books are desperately needed by Durham Social Services, who then distributes books to children in their care.
Once again, the Westminster School for Children will sponsor the book drive and deliver it all to DSS. The yellow collection box in the
Mission Center lobby (main floor) is the drop-off location. Please look through your bookshelves and share the joy of reading with your
young Durham neighbors. For more information, contact Kathy Stickley at 489-8432, ext. 107.
God Is In the Church Nursery*...Are YOU?
Where is God on Sunday morning? Of course, God is everywhere. We know that God is enthroned in the praises of his people.
(Psalm 22:3) When we gather to worship – God is with us.
But did you know that God is down in the church nursery?
“And Jesus took a child and put him in the midst of them, and taking him in his arms, he said to them, “Whoever receives one such child
in my name receives me, and whoever receives me, receives not me but him who sent me.” (Mark 9:36-37)
If you wonder why so many people are blessed by serving in the church nursery. Now you know – God is there!
Please join those who have already committed to serve the children of Westminster.
We still need over 20 volunteers to fill in the nursery schedule for the upcoming year.
Still thinking? Here are a few reasons to consider this opportunity:
Reason #1 - When you serve in the nursery, you are being entrusted with the most important (and vulnerable) members of the
Westminster family. There is no greater treasure on this side of heaven than the little ones God has given us. You must be someone
special to have the opportunity to fill a job this important.
Reason #2 – When you serve in the nursery, you can dress down! (Really, the children don’t mind. )
Reason #3 - The church nursery is the first contact young families will have with Westminster. Your friendly greeting and exceptional care
for their children can make a great first impression for our church. Your service in the nursery will also allow visitors and members alike
to focus on worship, rather than worrying about their children.
Reason #4 - There are goldfish and animal crackers in it for you!
Reason #5 - Many of the lasting feelings a child will have toward church are formed through their experiences in the nursery. Won’t you
be a part of this important ministry?
Please contact Cindy Soloe ([email protected] or 403-8894) to join a WPC Nursery team.

God does not need us to help God. Rather, God asks us to serve God.
This was a good message to hear from Pastor Adolfo Arias Job of Iglesia Jesus de Galilea after a week of
working side by side with our friends in Sabancuy, Campeche, Mexico. I could spend time here telling you
about the work we did as we helped add onto the parsonage, but you can see that in the pictures. You may also
see that we are working with Deysi, Karina, Isaac, Candolario, Adolfo, and Josue. What you can’t see is the
love that flowed through our arms as we lifted and passed blocks, hustled wheelbarrows, and shoveled sand and
gravel together. I have known these children of God for six years now and we are at ease with one another. The
silences aren’t quite as awkward because we don’t feel like strangers anymore. I think that was true even with
those in our group making their first trip to Sabancuy. The partnership formed by WPC and Jesus de Galilea is
the work of God’s hands through ours, and is a blessing to all.
To see amazing photographs from Dave Duling, go to:
http://s110.photobucket.com/albums/n92/pagamony/WPC/Mexico2011/?
or visit the blog at www.wpcyouthmission.blogspot.com to read about our Mexico experience.
It was amazing to watch several of the children of Sabancuy, who are now around age ten, take leadership in VCS and to hang
around, and talk to us while we worked. They helped the other children understand what we were doing, jumped into helping paint
hands for the banner, as well as cleaning up afterwards. Invira, Liz, and Leidy are teenagers and, with smiles on their faces, helped
clean up every day.
The food was amazing, and prepared with great time and love. The women who cooked for us spent the whole day in the kitchen—a
covered area between the church and the parsonage where there was very little breeze. They are joyful women who exude the love and
hospitality of God. Many of these women also sing in the church choir. Their joy and love of God shone from their faces as they sang
at worship with great smiles, enthusiasm, and energy. They are the love of God.
It is nearly impossible to put into words all the places we saw and felt God’s love. It is also nearly impossible to describe the ways
we are all changed by this experience. Eric (Karina’s brother) sat with the adults one night and opened his heart to us with amazing
trust and honesty. He shared his struggles and the struggle of so many of the people of Sabancuy, and of Mexico. He said his
perceptions of Americans changed because we took time from every day to spend with God in devotion and prayer. As has been true in
other years, anyone from the town who was around joined us in prayer. There is no separation because of language when we pray
together.
I can go on and on and on about how God was at work in this past week. I hope that you will spend some time looking at the
pictures and checking out the blog, which I will encourage the youth to use as a place for reflection in the coming weeks. Thank you
for your financial support that made this trip possible. Thank you for your prayers, encouragement, and all you do as a congregation to
raise wonderful Disciples of Jesus Christ.
Grace and Peace,

“HELPING HAND” BAGS
“Helping Hand” bags have been packed by the youth and are available again. These bags are a way of reaching out to the street
homeless without handing money out the car window. They contain crackers/granola bars, a bottle of water, a can of pork & beans, a
spoon, and a wet wipe, as well as information about Housing for New Hope.
Please pick up one (or two or three) in the Courtyard after Worship or in the Mission Center during the week. Consider adding a
pair of socks, another bottle of water, a bar of soap, toothpaste and toothbrush, or deodorant to the bag. Please share your experience
through Facebook on the Housing for New Hope page:

Announcement about Summer Sunday School...
The 10:00am Sunday Worship service has been a very successful change to our summer
schedule. However, it has created a hardship on families trying to get to Sunday School by
9:00am. The Christian Education Committee has made a responsible and respectful decision
to honor the time and effort our teachers put towards preparing for their classes. It is
frustrating to teach to an empty room. FEAR NOT! We have a solution!
Many of the classes offered this summer will be offered this Fall during the regular
Sunday school hour AND we will continue to offer the Present Word adult class,
Summer Choir, the Sunday Garden Club, and Harvest Table.
Following the Children’s Message in the Sanctuary, the preschool and kindergarten
children will depart for the Mission Center lower level as usual. Sunday School for these
ages will be part of their “childcare” experience, along with playground time.
Please continue to enjoy the Lemonade on the Lawn social time and more time with your
family each Sunday morning.
If you have any questions or suggestions, please contact Susan Ketch, Sally Keener or
Nancy Rozak. Contact Nancy Rozak at 489-4974, ext. 104, or [email protected].
Thank You, VCS Sponsors!
Thanks to your support for Vacation Church School,
we were able to sponsor approximately 38 children and
youth from Iglesia Emanuel this year.
Every child had a swimsuit and we had extras to
share with others in their congregation. It was a great
week at New Hope Camp & Conference Center. What
a joy to have access to this wonderful facility. We
learned a lot about Jonah and the Big Fish!

Westminster School For Young Children
The first session of Summer Camp at Westminster came to an end on Friday, June 24th. Our four classes
(a total of 40 children) worked on all kinds of interesting projects - decorating hats, backpacks, and t-shirts,
creating wood sculptures, and “bungee” painting! They enjoyed music class with Mrs. Stover, and kept cool with
our annual “Splash Day”. The second session of camp will begin on Monday, July 11th.
Hats off to our campers, their families, and all of you for making donations to our “Children Helping Children”
activity. This summer we are supporting PORCH-Durham by donating food items. These items will be used to support the
Backpack Buddies program sponsored by the Interfaith Food Shuttle. This program provides 250-300 backpacks with food
for the weekend to those children most in need within five Durham Public Schools, as well at the John Avery Boys
and Girls Club of Durham. Each of our campers provided a bag of food that was picked up by the PORCH-Durham
volunteers on June 20th! If you are not already helping with PORCH in your neighborhood, we'd love to have you join us in
helping meet this need. The next pick-up is scheduled for July 18th. Call the school office for more information (489-8432).
Thanks for your continued support!

The Habitat for Humanity project is going well. We are working on the Taylor house at 808 Gerard
St. and have been fortunate to have good weather and good crews. The following Westminster people have been
spotted working on the house: Mike Rosenmarkle, Peter Hanink, Kenzie Brannon, Bill McAvoy, Carl Boxberger, Jeff
Laufenberg, Pam Smith, and David Duling. Linda Barnett, Bonnie & Dailey Derr, and Carol & Jack Walker delivered lunch.
We are working with brethren from Trinity Avenue, Triangle, and Blacknall Presbyterian churches, as
well as Holy Infant and Immaculate Conception Catholic churches.
