From science fair to Love Your Planet Month, students,
teachers and even moms have been very busy.
Desde la feria científica a Love Your Planet Month, estudiantes,
maestros y hasta mamás han estado muy ocupados.

The 5 grade science fair in February was a success. It
was noticeable how students applied their effort and
enthusiasm to be ready for this event. Parents and all
visitors expressed how interesting the projects were and
how very well prepared and committed the students were
during their presentations.
Congratulations to the 17 finalists and to the winners!
En febrero, la feria científica de 5to fue un éxito. Era notable
cómo los estudiantes se esforzaban y ponían entusiasmo para
estar listos para el evento. Los padres y visitantes en general
opinaron que los proyectos fueron muy interesantes y que los

Love Your Planet Month March 22- April 22
Love Your Planet Month March 22- April 22
On a special flag assembly in which all CAT students
participated the Love Your Planet Month flag was raised
on March 22 (World Water Day). This assembly was the
starting point for a series of activities throughout the
school to help build awareness on our environment.
From now on, every year this flag will be raised while a
series of events take place.
En una ceremonia especial en la que todos los estudiantes del
CAT participaron, se izó la bandera de Love Your Planet Month
el 22 de marzo (Día Mundial del Agua). Esta asamblea fue el
punto de partida para una serie de actividades en el colegio para
promover la conciencia hacia el cuidado del medio ambiente. A
partir de ahora, cada año esta bandera se mostrará mientras se
llevan a cabo actividades.
All science lab students were very happy while working on
their Recycled Shoe Project. During the exhibition from

March 28 to April 1 , everyone that walked by the hallway
stopped to look at all the creative and colorful designs for
pencil holders and door holders that came from old shoes,
newspaper, used paper, old magazines, and other
materials. This project showed all of us how creativity can
help us in following the eco-R’s: Reuse, Repair, Reduce
and Recycle.
Todos los estudiantes de laboratorio estuvieron contentos
mientras trabajaban en su proyecto de reciclar zapatos viejos.
Durante la exposición, del 28 de marzo al 1ero de abril, cada
persona que pasaba por el pasillo se detenía para ver los
diseños creativos y coloridos de los lapiceros o detenedores de
puerta que resultaron de zapatos viejos, periódico, revistas
viejas y otros materiales. Este proyecto nos demostró cómo la

A team from CONAGUA visited the 6 graders to talk
about water in La Laguna and had a learning activity about
the limited resource water is and the need the growing
population has of this vital liquid.
CATtus club, moms, CATtus support: Worked hard helping
organize activities, bag sale and E-waste collection.
Each grade level from early childhood to high school
assisted to different events and worked on a special
assignment on the topic.

6to- Ms. Raquel González (asistente de laboratorio de
secundaria y preparatoria) nos visitó para hablar sobre las
plantas de tratamiento de agua. Después, los alumnos visitaron
la planta de tratamiento de agua del CAT donde aprendieron el
proceso y la importancia que ésta inversión significa para la
comunidad. Personal de CONAGUA presentó ¿De dónde viene
el agua que utilizamos en La Laguna? y dirigió una divertida
actividad acerca de este recurso natural limitado y sobre la
necesidad que tiene la población creciente de este vital líquido.
CATtus club, mamás, CATtus de apoyo: Organizaron actividades
y trabajaron vendiendo bolsas y recolectando basura
electrónica.
Cada grado escolar desde preescolar hasta preparatoria asistió a
diferentes eventos y trabajaron en proyectos especiales sobre
este tema.
Miembros del CATtus club, mamás, CATtus de apoyo, clase de
Teoría Musical, clase de teatro, club de ecología de high school,

Students are learning to use Word in Computer
Class. In their assignments, they follow a format
given by the teacher. Other software being used
is Kid Pix. This is a drawing program which helps
the students to draw pictures for their projects.
The students use educational software to
reinforce English skills. There are web sites
where students can play and reinforce skills in
other subjects like Math, Science, etc. In class,
we are visiting www.abcya.com , this site has
games according to the grade levels.
At home, you can support your son/daughter by
allowing them to use educational games. If you
are going to buy software for your children,
these are some tips which can help you make a
good decision:

aprendiendo a usar el “Word”. La maestra les da un
formato a seguir en sus trabajos. Otro programa que
usan los niños es el Kid Pix. Este es un programa de

questions. Starting at the age of 3, children
like to repeat what they listen to.

This month, I would like to share with all of you an article about
Internet security to help you and your children be safe while
surfing the net; particularly if you have young children and they
are using a computer at home, it’s always important to keep in
mind some tips that will enhance security and prevent any
inconvenient for you and your family.
As teachers we try to be alert under any unsafe situation, but as
parents, we can also make sure we practice these simple
guidelines compiled below to ensure our kids are having a
safety/enjoyable Internet session.
Nowadays, kids are exposed to Internet security problems;
especially, because they may not see the difference between
real life and online life. They may use social websites designed
for children such as Webkinz or Club Penguin, or social websites
designed for adults such as Windows Live Spaces, YouTube,
MySpace, Twitter, Facebook, and others. Whatever they're
doing, they should understand that many of these web pages
can be viewed by anyone.
Read this guideline for kids and parents and see if there’s
anything here you haven’t tried yet:
3 TIPS FOR KIDS: STOP-THINK-STAY SAFE
1. STOP-Don't give out any personal information
You wouldn't stand on the street handing out leaflets all about
you and your personal life. So don't give out personal
information on the internet.

* When you're signing up for any online accounts, email, chat or
on a web site, please use a nickname and ALWAYS ask an adult

2. THINK -Things are not always what they seem
You have probably heard stories about people on the internet
pretending to be someone else so that they can make friends
with young people. Not everyone on the internet has bad
intentions, but some do.
Question everything:

Is someone asking you questions about yourself?

If so, why do they need to know those things?

Do they get annoyed when you don't answer?

Why are they asking you to talk in private?
Éste mes, me gustaría compartir con todos ustedes un artículo acerca
de la Seguridad en Internet, para ayudarlos a ustedes y a sus hijos a
estar protegido cuando navegan por Internet; particularmente si tienen
niños pequeños que usan la computadora en casa. Es siempre muy
importante tener en mente algunos tips para mejorar y/o prevenir
cualquier inconveniente para usted y su familia.
Como maestros, tratamos de estar alerta sobre cualquier situación
insegura, pero como padres, también es importante practicar estos
simples pasos recopilados enseguida, para asegurar que nuestros niños
están teniendo una segura/divertida sesión en Internet. Últimamente,
los niños están expuestos a problemas de seguridad en Internet,
especialmente porque pueden no distinguir entre vida real y vida

Encourage your children not to post photographs of themselves
or their friends with clearly identifiable details such as street
signs, cars, or the name of their school on their sweatshirts.
7. Create different user accounts. Windows 7, Windows Vista,
and Windows XP allow you to create multiple user accounts or
profiles for your computer. It manages permissions or accesses
to install new hardware, software, games, chat programs, etc.
But it is possible to check later to see where your children have
spent their time online.
8. Review the History list in Internet Explorer to see all the pages
your children visited online. (To view your Internet History, click
the History button on the Internet Explorer browser toolbar).
9. So finally, invite your children to practice the 3 steps: Stop,
Think, and Stay Safe. These steps will help them recognize and
reduce the risks they might face online.

TAG teacher.
There are only five weeks of TAG class left! It’s
hard to believe. In the gifted program students do
daily math competitions. They make art and do
chemistry. Children have learned the basics of a
card game called Cribbage that reinforces
counting skills.
Most of the TAG students’ time now is spent on
research. To investigate the topics that they pick
themselves, the students can go to the classroom
library curriculum resources or find references
using Destiny, CAT’s on-line Library Catalog. TAG
kids search safe educational websites in the
technology center, then write and print text
documents for editing. Images are added to the
finished papers and the final product is uploaded
to Moodle, the school’s teaching /learning
platform.
TAG Night for the families of TAG students is
Thursday, May 26, 6:30 to 8:00 P.M.. TAG day, for
the school community is the next day. Grade level
group presentations will include themes like
“Paranormal Fairy Tales” and “Bibliographical
Rap.” Themes the students have selected for their
individual projects include “Influenza,” “Cruz
Azul,” and “Mental Illnesses.”
We are all excited about the culmination of our
year-long effort, and the anticipation will grow as
students begin to bring materials to school to
make posters, build models, or make videos and
Powerpoint presentations to show on their
laptops. We are on the final stretch of the year,
and we’re confident that the product of our hard
work will be rewarding.

Sólo nos quedan cinco semanas de clase para los
alumnos de TAG (Talentosos y Dotados). Es difícil
creerlo. En este programa los alumnos diariamente
tienen competencias matemáticas. Tienen clases de
arte y de química. Los alumnos han aprendido lo básico
de un juego de cartas llamado Cribbage que refuerza
las habilidades para contar.
La mayor parte del tiempo de los alumnos de TAG se va
en la investigación. Para investigar los temas que ellos
mismos escogen, pueden ver los recursos del programa
en la biblioteca de aula, o pueden buscar referencias en
el programa virtual de la biblioteca del CAT, llamado
Destiny. Los alumnos de TAG buscan en portales
seguros y educativos de Internet, en su centro de
cómputo, luego escriben e imprimen documentos para
editarlos. Se agregan imágenes y el producto final se
sube a Moodle, la plataforma de enseñanza y
aprendizaje del colegio.
La Noche TAG para las familias de los alumnos de TAG
es el jueves 26 de mayo, de 6:30 a 8:00 pm. El día TAG
para la comunidad escolar es el siguiente día. Las
presentaciones de grado incluirán temas como, Cuentos
de Hadas Paranormales y Rap Bibliográficos. Los temas
que los alumnos han escogido para sus proyectos
