Permanent Deacons
Since the restoration of the diaconate after the Second
Vatican Council in 1965, deacons have become a ministry
of service that is open to married and single men. Today
over 430 deacons serve the local Church of the
Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston.
Who is a deacon? A deacon is an ordained minister of
the Catholic Church. There are three groups or “orders” of
ordained ministers in the Church: bishops, presbyters
(priests) and deacons. Deacons are ordained as a
sacramental sign to the Church and to the world of Christ
who came to “serve and not be served.”
Why do some deacons become priests? For many
years ordained ministers “ascended” from one office to
another culminating in ordination to the presbyterate
(priesthood). The Second Vatican Council (1962-1965)
authorized the restoration of the diaconate as a permanent
order of ministry. So, while students from the priesthood
are still ordained deacons prior to their ordination as
priests, there are more than 13,000 deacons in the United
States alone who minister in this order permanently.
May married men be ordained deacons? Yes. In the
restoration of the permanent diaconate, Vatican II stated
that it would be open to “mature married men.” Later it
clarified it to mean men over the age of 35. This is in
keeping with ancient practice. Also, the expectation that
while a married man may be ordained, an ordained man, if
his wife should die, may not marry again without special
permission.
What sacraments can a deacon perform? An ordained
deacon may receive faculties from his bishop to preach, to
administer holy Communion and assist at holy Mass, to
baptize, to witness the sacrament of matrimony, to preside
at funeral vigils and funerals. However, his highest calling
is the ministry of service to the People of God including as
prison and hospital chaplains, archdiocesan and parish
ministry/administration positions, and more.
Prior to admission to formation, those desiring to apply
participate in a series of pre-requisite educational programs.
What are the qualifications? The man must be a fully
initiated Catholic (baptized and confirmed), have a vibrant
and living Catholic faith, if married be in a valid
sacramental marriage for at least 5 years, have a stable
marriage and family life, have the support of his family,
have a high school diploma, GED or higher education
degree, be in good physical and psychological health,
be sponsored by a parish, be involved in non-liturgical
parish ministry and between the ages of 31-60 years
of age.

puestos de administración de ministerio arquidiócesano y
parroquiales. Antes de la admisión a formación, aquellos
que deseen aplicar participan en una serie de programas
educativos de requisitos previos.
¿Cuáles son los requisitos? El hombre debe ser católico
completamente iniciado (bautizado y confirmado), tienen
una vibrante vida y fe católica, si es casado, si es casado
en un matrimonio sacramental durante al menos 5 años,
tener un matrimonio estable y una vida familiar, cuenta con
el apoyo de su familia, tiene un diploma de escuela
secundaria, GED o título de educación superior, estar en
buena forma física y salud psicológica, ser patrocinado por
la parroquia, estar involucrado en ministerios nolitúrgicos y estar en las edades de 31-60 años de
edad.

The social ministry office will have some wonderful opportunities in December to help others.
NAM toy bags will be available for pick up later in November. These bags are given to us by Northwest Assistance
Ministry and each bag contains a wish list for an age appropriate child. The bags are filled by our parishioners and taken
to NAM where they are sorted and given to families in our area.
Share Your Blessings at Catholic Charities, located at 2900 Louisiana. They are in need of volunteers to help sort
donations, put together gift bags for children and families, help wrap donated toys and gifts or help to distribute toy/gifts
during their holiday party. Individual, group and family opportunities are available. If you can help during the week of
December 12-19th please contact Karina @ [email protected] or 713.874.6645.
Finally, we will have an opportunity to provide food baskets for approximately 200 families from Holy Name Catholic
Church, our sister parish. Family names will be in the Narthex starting November 28th before and after all Sunday masses
until the names are gone. We will need volunteers to help load the truck Saturday, December 19th and to unload the truck
at Holy Name on Sunday, December 20th. Please watch the bulletin for the dates of these projects. If you have any
questions, please contact Jan in the Parish Social Ministry office.
