Dear Hoffman Family,
Swinging through the nearby Starbucks, or your local coffee shop
equivalent, is a daily ritual for many folks. There’s something about needing that jolt of caffeine that causes
our cars to steer their way to the drive-thru window. At least that was the case for one Newington, Connecticut
woman as she stopped for her usual cup of coffee. While out doing some last minute Christmas shopping, the
Starbucks just off the Berlin Turnpike was her stop of choice.
Kaitlyn placed her order and sat in line behind a host of other early morning coffee drinkers. She did her
best to wait patiently on that busy morning as she inched her way toward the window. So you might imagine
her surprise when she instinctively handed over her credit card only to hear these words: “Your drink is free.
The car ahead of you paid your bill.”
As it turns out, Kaitlyn found herself right in the middle of a spontaneous “pay if forward” chain that had
begun several hours before her arrival. One after another, Starbucks patrons discovered that the person in
front of them had covered the cost of their order, only to decide that they, too, would keep the good gesture
going and do the same for the person next in line.
Kaitlyn wasn’t about to break the procession of kind deeds. Despite having to pay more than what her own
coffee would’ve cost, she gladly spent a few more dollars in hopes that it might brighten the next person’s day
as much as it had hers.
And the string of goodwill continued----for four days and an incredible 1468 people!
Said one customer, “It’s such a small gesture, but it instantly turned my mood around.” And another, “It’s
pretty cool how such a simple act can show such care for another person-----even someone you don’t know.”
The more you think about it, most of our lives are filled with small acts, simple words, or rather unassuming
moments that end up making a big difference. The smallest of things can affect our lives in the deepest of
ways. Our lives as parents can be impacted hugely by the smallest gesture of kindness by our spouse or
loved one. Similarly, the smallest act of kindness by a mother or father directed toward his/her child, can
make an impact to last a lifetime.
Small things can make a difference…..a child enters this world in the form of a petite eight-pound, two
ounce package, and yet is guaranteed to turn her parents’ world upside down. Anyone who experiences the
sting of a splinter knows it doesn’t take more than a near-microscopic sliver of wood to cause incredible
discomfort. Small things can have a big impact.
The words we choose and the actions we take are no different. A single smile or an unexpected phone
call, or 5 minutes of your undivided attention----they make a bigger difference than you might imagine.
The life of a parent is like yeast or salt. More often than not it may go unnoticed or unseen. But even a hint
of joy or generosity instantly adds meaning and richness to another’s life. Doing the work of a parent looks
something like a match illuminating a dark room. You may think the light you shine is expendable, but without
your touches of warmth, there’s a corner of your household still looking for hope or comfort.
So this month, don’t do something big. Don’t assume that being a parent is only reserved for grand
gestures or public platforms. Instead, do something small. Or even better, do lots of small somethings with a
generous heart.
Parenting is lived in the midst of shared laughter, caring conversations, warm embraces, and spontaneous
gifts of unconditional love. Your small acts of kindness and care actually make a very big difference in the life
of a child.
Sincerely,
Mark Walther

January 23, 2015
Dear Hoffman Family,
On Saturday, March 21, 2015 Hoffman School will be hosting a special Dodgeball for
Diabetes event!
Our fifth Dodgeball for Diabetes event is an exciting service opportunity and fundraising effort for the American Diabetes Association (ADA) that teaches students the
benefits of making healthy life choices, including getting daily exercise and eating
nutritious foods.
Diabetes is a chronic disease that impairs the body’s ability to use food properly.
Insulin is a hormone produced in the pancreas that is necessary for the body to
convert food into energy. In people with diabetes, either the pancreas doesn’t make
insulin, the body cannot use the insulin properly, or both. Without insulin, glucose
(sugar) – the body’s main energy source – builds up in the blood. Nearly one child in
every 400 develops diabetes.
Only Hoffman School students are invited to participate in this special event to raise
funds to help the ADA accomplish the mission – to prevent and cure diabetes and
improve the lives of all those affected by the disease. The programs and research
supported by the ADA help more than 23 million people living with diabetes today.
Interested students are asked to organize themselves into a team of 6 members who
will play Dodgeball in a tournament format against other students of the same gender
and grade level. Please read the attached registration form carefully, and turn in your
team’s application and registration fee of $60.00 before Friday, March 6, 2015.
Proceeds will be donated to the American Diabetes Association. Checks for
registration may be made out to Hoffman School.
We are delighted to provide this unique opportunity for our students! If you should
have any questions, please contact me at your convenience.
Sincerely,
Mark Walther
Principal

THE FIELD
The playing field is a rectangle, divided into two (2) equal sections by a center-line and
attack-lines approximately 3m from, and parallel to the centerline.
MEASUREMENTS: Approximately 50’ x 22’ – Similar to a volleyball court.
THE GAME
The object of the game is to eliminate all opposing players by getting them "OUT". This may
be done by:
1. Hitting an opposing player with a LIVE thrown ball thrown below the shoulders.
2. Catching a LIVE ball thrown by your opponent before it touches the ground.
Definition: LIVE: A ball that has been thrown and has not touched anything, including the
floor/ground, another ball, another player, official or other item outside of the playing field
(wall, ceiling, etc)
If a player is hit in the head with a LIVE ball, the player will not be eliminated. The player
that threw the ball will also NOT be eliminated and no penalty will be given.
BOUNDARIES
During play, all players must remain within the boundary lines. Players may leave the
boundaries through their end-line only to retrieve stray balls. They must also return through
their end-line. If a player exits the field anywhere other than their end-line, they are
eliminated. If a player dodges a ball to the side or jumps backwards off the court while
dodging, they are eliminated.
THE OPENING RUSH
Game begins by placing the dodgeballs along the center line – three (3) on one side of the
center hash and three (3) on the other. Players then take a position behind their end line.
Following a signal by the official, teams may approach the centerline to retrieve the balls.
This signal officially starts the contest. Teams may only retrieve the three (3) balls to their
right of the center hash. Once a ball is retrieved it must be taken behind the attack-line
before it can be legally thrown.
TIMING AND WINNING A GAME
The first team to legally eliminate all opposing players will be declared the winner. A 90
second time limit has been established for each contest. If neither team has been eliminated
at the end of the 90 seconds, the team with the greater number of players remaining will be
declared the winner. In the event that there is an even number of players on the court, a
sudden death overtime period will be played. The team that eliminates an opposing player
first will be declared the winner.
5-SECOND VIOLATION
In order to reduce stalling, a violation will be called if a team in the lead controls all six (6)
balls on their side of the court for more than 5 seconds. This also applies to tied teams.
More details can be found in the NADA Rule Book
Officials
All decisions made by the official are final. NO EXCEPTIONS.

hacer ejercicio diariamente y comer alimentos nutritivos.
hacerse a Hoffman School.

NO EXCEPCIONES.
