THE EPIPHANY OF THE LORD January 3, 2016 Year C Epiphany is an ancient, global celebration of Christ among us. It reveals that Jesus did not come for a privileged few. He came to the whole world, to people who saw, heard and understood. We are not so much brought to Christ through institutions as by the powerful witness of those who like the magi have encountered him. Even today. "When children at the dinner table are glued to the computer, or the telephone and do not listen to one another, they are not a family, they are retired," the pope said recently. Continuing his catechetical series on family life, the pope reflected on the theme of togetherness, which is manifested at the dinner table. The pope said that "to share a meal -- and not just food, but also affection, stories, events -- is a fundamental experience." The pope said Christians have a special vocation to foster family togetherness. The dinner table, he noted, is the place chosen by Jesus to teach his disciples and where he summarized the meaning of his death on the cross "that nourishes true and everlasting love." Time for forgiveness has begun, pope says as holy doors open worldwide VATICAN— With the opening the Holy Door at the Basilica of St. John Lateran, Pope Francis declared that the time for tenderness, joy and forgiveness had begun. As holy doors around the world were opened at city cathedrals, major churches and sanctuaries Dec. 13, the pope said this simple gesture of opening God's house to the world serves as "an invitation to joy. The time of great pardon begins. It is the Jubilee of Mercy." Dressed in rose vestments on Gaudete Sunday, the third Sunday of Advent, marking the joyful expectation of Christmas, the pope began the ceremony outside the basilica in front of the bronze holy door. The door depicts a bas relief of the crucified Christ looking down on Mary tenderly holding the baby Jesus, whose small foot shone like bright gold from the countless kisses and touches of visiting pilgrims. "This is the door of the Lord. Open for me the gates of justice. I will enter your house, Lord, because of your great mercy," the pope read solemnly before climbing two marble steps and pushing open the large door. The following Sunday we celebrated the feast of the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph. From a birth in a stable to the warm welcome in a family… in these characteristics Jesus grew in wisdom and stature (ref. Lk 2:52). Jesus’ true humanity developed and grew. But this mystery needs to be revealed! Epiphany is defined as the manifestation of Christ to the Gentiles (to the world). This celebration connects us to the Baptism of the Lord, another manifestation moment, and to the beginning of Jesus’ public ministry at the wedding at Cana of Galilee (Sunday January 10. ref. Jn. 2:1-12). In today’s Gospel, Mathew mentions that Jesus is the “newborn King, the ruler, who is to shepherd the people.” The presence of the Magi is of universal significance. Jesus was born for everyone, without LIFE AT... Three Kings Celebration… in many homes the Christmas tree is no longer decorating their living rooms and gifts have been opened or even exchanged at the store. But Christmas is not over, at least not for the thousands of children in Mexico and Latin America. On January 6th, children will be anxiously awaiting the “Día de los Reyes” Celebration, for it is Melchior, Caspar, and Balthazar in charge of distributing gifts and not Santa Clause. I must admit that these three wise kings missed coming to my home several times, but I still believed in them, at least I know that they still bring their gifts to Jesus and I know that Jesus shares them with me. distinction of races, cultures and nationalities. The fact that God became man should matter to every human person who ever existed and yet to exist. Even though it may not be important to a group of people, either because of their beliefs or disbeliefs, this does not matter. Like Paul; we are to be promoters of Christ’s Manifestation, to a universal understanding of the Christian faith. Our faith is not to be reduced to a group of people (Christians). We possess the full revelation of truth and truth is light and light shines in darkness. Today we celebrate that God is born to manifest himself, to relate to all, to be accessible to all people. This has an important consequence for the understanding of our faith, and cannot be reduced to a “private devotion.” There has to be a conviction so strong that we cannot remain silent. There is this idea, which I experienced in these past weeks, that you cannot say Merry Christmas but instead you must use an appropriate Shepherd formation program. It is a two-year formation for priests in ministry. Through these months I have been trained in leadership skills and best practices for priestly ministry in the 21st century. As you are aware the demands of ministry and the complexity of running a parish require effective leadership in order to create and build authentic and vibrant communities. This program has helped me with these challenges and has given me the opportunity to learn and deal with the administrative and pastoral concerns in new ways. The program has taken me away from the parish once or three times a month for classes, currently I am in module 4 of 6 modules. The present module that I am studying is Leadership in the Team Context. I am learning to review our parish committees and councils and learning to create high impact Upon my arrival as pastor I became teams in order to get things done for part of the Catholic Leadership Institute the parish. through the Good Leaders, Good The Good Leaders, Good Shepherds The Epiphany of the Lord, 01/03/16 | The SETON Sunday News | 3 wish: Happy Holidays. In this country you have freedom of religion provided that no manifestation be made in public but only in the private spheres of our liturgical celebrations. Counter culturally, our faith must permeate our actions, our thoughts and our public presence. Jesus didn’t come into the world to create a private club, but to tell us that God is our Father, that we are his children and we are all brothers. If you’ve been attentive to the cover of our Seton Sunday News, you will notice a star as our parish logo, an interesting element for today’s celebration of Epiphany. The Magi from the east represent wisdom, possibly astronomers, they were following the star as their only guide to meet and worship the child Jesus. Attentive to what the star revealed to them, suddenly the star disappeared and now they see themselves in need to ask for directions. The chief priest and the scribes assembled and they did have the answers to their questions, the Christ was to be born “in Bethlehem of curriculum explores leadership contexts and provides the skills and practices that will allow a priest to be a happy, holy, and healthy shepherd in any leadership circumstance. To learn more about this Institute please visit t h e w e b p a g e a t : www.catholicleaders.org Judea.” Also Scripture was quoted to them: “From Bethlehem shall come a ruler, who is to shepherd the people Israel.” Now the Magi were well disposed and open to the evidence of reason and revelations of Scripture, proceeded to the place and once again their star of faith that was guiding them appeared. They found the child and offered their gifts. Why is the star important to us at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church? It was precisely on Epiphany Sunday that Elizabeth questioned God about her star of faith being hidden from her. Upon reading a meditation on Epiphany she read “all you who have lost the star of faith… go to the priest and let yourself be guided by them.” It is here that Elizabeth resolved to be a Catholic… The Star of Faith that she lost appeared to her again and this time leading her to the Eucharist. On this celebration of Epiphany we are also guided by a star… Our Star of Faith giving light to all! to share my invitation but I decided to do it through these means hoping that just like many children receive gifts this coming 6th of January I would be one amongst many, though I am no longer a kid. I truly appreciate you generosity! One last thing, tomorrow is the Feast of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton. What a great opportunity to give thanks for the gift of faith. Just like she followed her Star of Faith, may she help us follow our own Star of Faith as well. Going back to “El Dia de los Reyes,” and even though Christmas gifts have already been wrapped and unwrapped, I would like to invite you to consider supporting the Catholic Institute Sincerely, through supporting me in this Fr. Roberto Saldivar, M.Sp.S. endeavor. Would it be in your possibilities to help me with a small amount to cover my tuition in the program? Jesus Christ is the Son of God and he is alive. It is possible to know his as a person. This means that we must study and read about him. However, it has often been observed that “knowledge makes a bloody entrance.” It requires effort. We must know everything we can about his life and teachings, beginning with the Gospels. St. Jerome wrote: “Ignorance of scriptures is ignorance of Christ.” We must know the teachings of Jesus as handed down to us; we must study and know the Catechism of the Catholic Church, we must spend silent time with Him every day in prayer. In this way, we will know not only the facts and stories about Jesus, but Jesus Himself. In the Seminary, we often say “It is important to pray your theology”. This means a man should take what he learns in class into the chapel during his hoy hour and talk to Jesus about it. Do you know your Catholic faith? Do you know Jesus in a personal way? Falling in love with Christ is the essence of Christianity. Would you say that he is your best friend? From the Book “To Save a Thousand Souls” Fr. Brett Brannen DID YOU KNOW… “Nuns” are women religious who have professed solemn vows of poverty, chastity and obedience and live a life of prayer and penance within cloistered communities? There is a difference between a “nun” and a “sister.” “Sisters” are women religious who also have taken traditional religious vows but are engaged in active ministries among the public? They usually live in a convent. ”Brothers” live in Religious Communities. They take vows and promise to use their talents to serve God wherever the Community decides they are needed. Brothers are not ordained. Spiritual Direction for the Road to Conversion Bishop John Cheverus became Elizabeth’s spiritual director from 1805 until her death. With his profound spiritual wisdom and psychological insight, he guided Elizabeth to make her conversion to Catholicism and to respond to God‘s call to be an educator and enter religious life. He also guided her how to direct her sister-in-law who was struggling on the road to conversion to Catholicism due to her family’s persecution. With the spiritual direction of Cheverus, Elizabeth deepened the Christ-centered life. Whenever Elizabeth went distress, Cheverus encouraged her to rejoice in her sufferings and afflictions because Jesus received her ―in the likeness of his true disciples. He also stimulated Elizabeth‘s biblical piety. Cheverus guided Elizabeth to read some chapters of the Gospel of St. John as well as other spiritual books, when she was in distress. In his letter concerning Elizabeth‘s children, he prayed for God‘s blessings on her children that they be grounded in the faith & immovable in the hope of the Gospel. Elizabeth developed her Eucharistic piety with the spiritual direction of Cheverus. Cheverus instructed her: ―Let the love of our adorable Saviour in his Sacrament through & on the Cross be the subject of your discourse. Elizabeth deepened her Eucharistic piety by participation in the suffering of Jesus on the Cross. Under Cheverus‘ guidance, she could develop her liturgical piety by reading the Roman Catholic Manual given her by the same Cheverus. For Elizabeth the highest manifestation was in the Blessed Sacrament, even before her conversion, she had great reverence for the real presence in the Eucharist. From the book “Spiritual Direction in the Writings Of Elizabeth Ann Seton” Lee M I S S I O N A R I E S of The Holy Spirit St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish is staffed by the Religious Congregation of the Missionaries of the Holy Spirit In this Section you will find interesting articles about the Missionaries of the Holy Spirit, the Spirituality of the Cross and the life of their founding parents: Concepcion Cabrera de Armida (Conchita) and Fr. Felix de Jesus Rougier. The Cross as epiphany Concepcion understood, through a special grace bestowed on her by God, that the inmost life of God is Father, Son and Holy Spirit and is manifested in His attitude toward us. God is Love which is spread and overflows liberally and freely to save what has been lost, overcoming the obstacle a sinful life had erected against the expansion of divine Good. The Father out of love gives us His Son. The Son out of love gives us His life. The Holy Spirit is at the same time the beginning in God and the fruit in us of the salvific design. For Conchita and the Spirituality of the Cross, the glorious Cross is the supreme epiphany of the mystery of the living God. This revelation is a Word addressed to man which by nature is a summons, a call, a loving demand for a response. When man under divine initiative opens himself up to His action, then vital relations of dialogue rise up in him, which correspond to the movement of descending Love. "The love of God has been poured out in our hearts through the Holy Spirit which has been given to us" (Rm 5:5). This love impels us to identify ourselves with Christ in His attitude of self-giving and oblation on behalf of men with the intention of glorifying the Father from whom all good proceeds. In this way there is reestablished the flow and re-flow of the divine good communicated to man. It is a chain which ties up to God, not a chain of servitude or of simple dependence as a creature, but a "Chain of Love." It is a synthesis of the fundamental experience of an existence saved by Jesus’ oblation which members of the Mystical Body of Christ lead, a lived experience of the mystical incarnation which finds its consummation in the Unity of the Trinity. From the book “Conchita’s diary” Fr. M. Philippon, OP The Epiphany of the Lord, 01/03/16 | The SETON Sunday News | 7 JUBILEE OF MERCY MERCIFUL LIKE THE FATHER The sheep and the goats in the parable of the last judgement ask Jesus: “When did we see you hungry and feed you… a stranger and welcome you?” (Matt 25:37-38). I am blinded to the real presence of the person. In our busyness, how easy it is to treat people who need our assistance and attention as interruptions. A person is easily reduced to an obstacle in my way. I don’t have many regrets regarding things or objects taht remain unfinished, but I do have many memories of times I wish I had been more attentive, more present to a person. When my concern has been how much time they are taking, or other things I have to do, or what will I do once I’m “finished” with them, What does this tell me? Those “needy” people who interrupt my life are Christ’s mercy toward me. How different it has been when I have been welcoming and have entered into relationship with the person in need. So often I have been amazed that I am not able to solve the person’s problem, but a real good has come from the listening and being with. The phenomenon of the sheep and the goats is not just something of the end of time; its truth resonates now, in this life. Mercy is not just for the end; mercy acoompanies us on every step of our journey to our destiny. Mercy, who is Jesus, is really present now. Father R. Veras Year of Mercy Companion At times we are called to gaze even more attentively on mercy so that we may become a more effective sign of the Father’s action in our lives. Pope Francis, MV 3 Y o u t h Section Typology Typology knows teens today have a huge heart for service and a desire to really experience life, to learn by doing. Plus, all our St. EAS parish teens preparing for Confirmation in May need to do some service to the poor and needy in order to open their hearts to Jesus before they receive this beautiful sacrament. With all this in mind, and with the Jubilee of Mercy now in full swing all around us, Typology presents this article from Marisa Helms at lifeteen.com suggesting ways we can serve others and bring Christ’s mercy to those in need. Creative Ways to Show Mercy This Year by MARISA HELMS from lifeteen.com Wow. Another new year is fast approaching. A new year means new and exciting things are on the horizon—new opportunities, and new ways to grow in our faith. Pope Francis announced an extraordinary jubilee, a Holy Year of Mercy, to highlight the Catholic Church’s “mission to be a witness of mercy.” The special year will take place Dec. 8, 2015 until Nov. 20, 2016. Mercy into our everyday life? After much brainstorming and many sleepless nights (OK, that’s sarcasm) I came up with some ideas based off of corporal works of mercy that you can do throughout the year. Some are easy everyday things, others you can do with a group of friends, your youth group, or even as a service project in college. Without further ado here are my ideas for the year of Mercy: Feed the Hungry • Get a group of friends to help make sack lunches at your local homeless shelter. • Have a food kit in your car of some non-perishable foods. So next time when you’re at red light use that opportunity to pass out some food. • Call around town asking certain soup kitchens when they serve dinner and get a group of friends or even your family to help serve dinner once a month. • Help serve pancake breakfast with the Knights of Columbus. Give Drink to the Thirsty So many people in our world are hurting So what does this mean for us young and unsatisfied. There’s a thirst in our souls people? How can we implement the year of that can only be fulfilled by God. And just What an exciting time to be alive! as we long for Jesus, He longs for us too. He thirsts for souls and we can help to bring more and more souls to Him. So for this Year of Mercy, quench your thirst and dive into your faith by serving others and bringing others to Christ. • Make a fast for a month of only drinking water as a beverage, and offer to God your desires for other drinks as a sacrifice for those in need. • Donate baby formula to pregnancy help center. • Pass out water bottles to homeless people on city streets, with a note attached, or a Bible verse, or a simple “you are loved.” • Take time to meditate on God’s thirst for souls. And pray for the grace to help bring Him souls. However, the pope said that there are obstacles to family togetherness and Christians are called to overcome them. At the dinner table, he said, families speak and listen, but "there can't be any silence that is not the silence of monks but of selfishness, of the cellphone, of the television." People in wealthier countries, in particular, are enticed to spend money on excessive amounts of food that ultimately distract from the "true hunger of the body and the soul," he said. Pope Francis called on families to contemplate the mystery of the Eucharist in which "Christ breaks his body and shares his blood for all. There is no division that can resist this sacrifice of communion." Christian families who embrace this calling of togetherness, "cooperate with the grace of the Eucharist, which has the power to create an always new communion that includes and saves," he said.
