Keeler, Chicago IL 60641 773-283-6296 The Season of Giving: CICS-Irving Park “Adopt-a-Family” We all want joy in our lives right? It sure beats feeling down doesn’t it? A scientific study looking at thankfulness and gratitude revealed that both are a key factor to happiness and they are very often forgotten about when considering the feeling of joy. In fact, people who share gratitude on a regular basis experience a greater amount of happiness in their lives. Perhaps it is because we tap into our own internal love when we share gratitude and in turn that affects our overall state or maybe it is the union that is created when you express gratitude to someone. Either way, it is clear that gratitude is key to experiencing joy in your life! What: For the past 2 years at CICS Irving Park, we have had our own internal “adopt a family” project. The CICS-Irving Park community has brought joy and happiness to some of our families in need around winter break! We typically “adopt” 5-6 families that are unable to buy gifts as well as basic items such as undershirts, socks, groceries, gas, etc. How: This year, I need your help! If you are a family in need* please email me and let me know so I can add you to our adopt-a-family list. Your names will be kept confidential and only I will follow up with you to fill out a needs/wants list for your family and children. *If you have been one of our families that has received gifts through this program in the past and you are still in need, please contact me to add you to the list! Ways to Contribute: In the past, we used an online system that listed what the anonymous families had requested. 1. Families interested in buying a gift for a family in need would go on the website 2. Pick the item that they were buying 3. Mark that it was bought 4. The gift would then be brought to school 5. The gift would be given to the family during the week before winter break by IP staff Please contact me as soon as possible if you are a family in need. Families interested in purchasing an item for a family-keep an eye on the Friday packet for the website address where you can see the list of items! Thank you! Suggestions: • • • • • • Pizza party Ice Cream party Lunch date with the principal Open gym times for upper grades Adding to the “paycheck” system for upper grades Dress down day Proposed that a list of incentives, such as those above, be given to each class once it reaches 100% participation; allow the students to choose as different things motivate different age groups o Take an informal survey of teachers to see what they are doing to keep track and motivate their students – see what works • Fall Fest Update – Marisol Duerr and Yolanda Colon • Fall Fest was a big success and thank you to all who worked to make it happen. A few suggestions to note: • • • Parent volunteers are necessary to achieve success, however, it was noted that parents occasionally wandered from their designated spots to follow their children and left extra work for others. It was suggested that “volunteer training” be considered for all parents who want to volunteer for any events or excursions sponsored by CICS. For the younger students, up to 5 or 6th grade, the games and events were wellreceived. However, there was not enough for the upper classes. Possibly offer the 6/7-8th graders a dance party, or more basketball time. Upper classmen like to “hang out” and socialize so creating a space for them to do so. The games were almost all paid for by the parents. In some cases, parents “dedicated” the game to their child’s class or individual student. • General All-School PUMA PTO Meeting, Thursday November 21, 6pm Meeting agenda topics include: • Core Curriculum – presentation by Keith Patz from Distinctive Schools (approx. 15-20 minutes) What does this mean for parents? What does this mean for students? How is it different? What does it mean to master concepts and not just teach for tests? What will be the new testing structure? Why will there be a drop in overall scores? • Advocacy Update – possible presentation by Mike Bower (Andrew Renalds and Albert Mendez will present if he is unable to attend) • Andrew Renalds reported that he participated in a meeting with Chicago Parents United (“CPU”) saying it was very organized and effective. The CPU Advisory Committee is looking for a volunteer from the charter schools. • Fall Fund Drive update and reminder to all parents to donate; get the word out that any amount is welcome • Stipends for Teachers who run clubs at school (Ann Kauth) • Discussion around paying teachers who run after school clubs such as the math club and “Pumas Verdes” – more details are needed to define what the clubs will be and what the needs of the clubs will be • Blue Bags (Ann Kauth) • Blue recycling bags are needed to successfully recycle; currently, recycling put in black bags get thrown out, not recycled. Blue bags are more expensive and Ann will explore the cost and provide the PTO with numbers. • Director Update (Sohia Parashos provided Karin’s update) • Differentiated blocks have rolled out. Fall NWEA scores were used to determine levels. Programs such as “Words Their Way” for spelling (using root words) are being used, as well as “Read Assist”, a computer-based reading program to practice more fluency. The Director of personalized learning from Distinctive assisted with the program. • “Singapore Math” is taught using “Show Me Apps” whereby teachers record a video teaching a problem solving technique, for example, and some students will watch that while the teacher is with another group, then rotates. Like “cloning” the teacher • Ipads – we have 30 ipads now and those will be used by students and teachers will be able to track their progress; teachers will have individual apps to meet their needs Additional discussion: • White boards – Andrew provided a quote for a white board for Ms. Abrevaya’s 4th grade class. The cost of the whiteboard is $3300 and installation quote is $1500. The installation quote is expensive and Andrew will discuss with CICS if they are able to assist with the cost of installation. • “Green Light” has been coming in monthly to train teachers how to use whiteboards more effectively • There will be a “tech inventory” beginning next week which will go over all the technology and machinery in the school. Sophia will provide the PUMA PTO with the results once done including any costs related to servicing machines. • Teacher Updates – None • No additional Committee updates • The next fundraising event is the concert at The Abbey – “American English” Wednesday November 27, 8pm • - The Abbey provides the school with tickets for the concert to sell at $10 apiece; the Abbey allows the school to keep the proceeds from the sale of tickets. Families and staff are all encouraged to attend. PUMA families can also buy tickets for staff. The Abbey is printing tickets and a flyer will go out in the Friday Packet. VOTE: Albert Mendez made a motion to use approximately $7500 of current PTO fund to purchase 12 new iPads and a new cart. The motion was seconded then voted on by the board members present. The Vote passed and Andrew will proceed with the purchase.
