April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month, a time to recognize that we all play an important role in protecting our children and young people. Each year, the Archdiocese of Los Angeles publishes the Working Together to Prevent Child Sexual Abuse brochure, which provides a listing of policies, programs, resources and other information on how the Catholic Church is working to help prevent child sexual abuse. Copies of the 2016 brochure are available in the parish vestibule or by contacting [email protected] Jubilee Year of Mercy April 10, 2016 Third Sunday of Easter How appropriate today’s Gospel for this Jubilee Year of Mercy, both because of the “breakfast” Jesus provides (“a charcoal fire with fish on it and bread”) and the number of fish in Peter’s net (“one hundred fifty-three”) (John 21:11–12). Of the fish, Saint Augustine suggests that the roasted fish is the suffering Christ. Saint Gregory the Great adds that Christ lowered himself to swim in the “water” of our humanity; to be caught in the “net” of our death; to be “roasted” in his Passion on the fire of suffering. Saint Jerome claims that “one hundred fifty-three” represents the full number of known species of fish, signifying that the Church’s “net” has room for all our widely diverse humanity, securing our unity-indiversity in the hands of Peter and his successors. Having received God’s mercy as “the beating heart of the Gospel,” may the Church—we—“pattern [our] behavior after the Son of God who went out to everyone without exception” (Misericordiae Vultus, 12). —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. PAGE 3 A MASS WITH HEALING SERVICE DATE: Monday, April 18, 2016 PLACE: St. Linus Church TIME: 7:30 pm CELEBRANT: Fr. Tony Gomez ¿SABIA USTED? —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. PAGE 4 Third Sunday of Easter Isaiah 1:16, 17 "Wash yourselves, make yourselves clean; Put away the evil of your doings from before My eyes. Cease to do evil, Learn to do good; Seek justice, Rebuke the oppressor; Defend the fatherless, Plead for the widow." Table of Blessings Meal Ministry EASTERTIME-why 50 days? Attention to the meaning of numbers was more pronounced in the early centuries of the Church than it is now, and seven times seven, with a celebration on the next day, the eighth day, was symbolic of a time beyond the structure of human weeks. THE GOSPELS OF THE SUNDAYS of Easter give strong color to Eastertime. The first three Sundays relate appearances of Jesus after the resurrection. The Fourth Sunday always focuses on the image of the Good Shepherd. The next three Sundays of the season draw from what has come to be known as the “farewell discourse” or the “high-priestly prayer” in the gospel according to John. EASTERTIME is neither remember ing something that happened long ago, nor is it a “keeping in mind” of various paschal themes. It is Christ dead and risen in our midst. It is the Spirit breathing in us today. Easter is made present in the newly baptized among us, the newly confirmed and those receiving their first Eucharist. Easter is a time for accepting anew the great commission of the risen Lord to “go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations…” (taken from LTP) Please contact us if you know of a family caring for a terminally ill loved one or someone going thru debilitating medical treatments, who would benefit from our meal ministry to help ease their burden, if only for a simple sharing of a meal.. If you are interested in helping to provide a hot meal once or twice a month to one of our parish families in need of compassion while facing a difficult time, please contact Mary Ratanasurakarn at (951) 5000787 A Pro Life Rosary for the Unborn Every Tuesday at 6:30pm inside church before mass Many lives depend on us advocating for them! Attn: Spiritual Parents/ Brothers & Sisters!! Please continue to pray! The babies are counting on us! ~ Remember to pr ay daily for your spir itually adopted child and his/her parents. During your earthly life, this spiritually adopted child of yours is known only to God, but in the world to come, it is hoped that you will meet this child whose life was spared by your prayers and spend eternal happiness with him/her. Six Months Your spiritually adopted baby is growing quite beautifully now. His or her weight is approaching 2 pounds. Babies born prematurely at this time have a very good chance of surviving. The medical advances in caring for extremely small newborn infants are extraordinary indeed. PAGE 6 Third Sunday of Easter PAGE 7 Tercer Domingo de Pascua REDIMIDOS REDEMPTION Do you remember Peter on the night Jesus was arrested? He claimed he had never heard of Jesus. Today we are called to join Peter in testifying to the name of Jesus as he does in the first reading, and in proclaiming our love for him as Peter does in the Gospel passage. The powerful imagery of John’s vision in the second reading from the book of Revelation shows us the company we keep when we have faith in the name of Jesus. We join all living creatures, “countless in number” from “heaven, earth, under the earth, in the sea; everything in the universe” (Revelation 5:11, 13). The dignity and majesty described in each reading are in stark contrast to the dark and pitiful image of Peter and the other apostles at the time of Jesus’ arrest, trial, and crucifixion. What a relief that we can all be redeemed so completely! Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION From the earliest centuries, we know that some Christian women desired to vow themselves to a celibate life to pray and serve. Some, but by no means everyone, wanted a kind of monastic life. Others wanted to stay in the family home. By the fourth century, the church was celebrating the “Consecration of Virgins,” a rite performed by the bishop, and involving a “veiling” of the woman. It was looked upon as a form of marriage with Christ, partly because in the culture of the day a woman’s status in society was linked to a man. The prayers and ritual for the consecration of virgins were exactly the same as the prayers and ritual for the consecration of a bride on her wedding day. The public character of the rite gave the bishop the opportunity to commend the virgin to the faithful, and to threaten with punishment anyone who tried to turn her from her commitment. Eventually, the rite fell into disuse for women living in the world, and was reserved for nuns. The Second Vatican Council directed that it be revived and restored, and in nearly every diocese, single women have embraced this form of consecrated life. —Rev. —Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. NECESSARY Grace is necessary to salvation, free will is equally so; but grace in order to give salvation, free will in order to receive it. —St. —San Bernardo PAGE 8 Third Sunday of Easter We need your collaboration to collect great auction items to help fundraise at the Unveiled event.
