Your Pension
Fund and the
Challenges
Ahead
As an 1199SEIU retiree, you will continue to receive a set monthly pension payment each month for life. But although
your pension benefits are safe and secure, going forward, the collective bargainers are taking steps to stabilize our
Funds to protect you and your working brothers and sisters.
Like every other pension fund in the nation, your Pension Fund is in crisis from the impact of the stock market’s crash.
Each of our three Funds has lost a great deal of money since the stock market collapsed – 33% each in our Health
Care Employees and Greater New York Pension Funds. As a result, the actuaries have certified both of these Funds in
“red” or critical, status for 2009 under the Pension Protection Act. Our smaller Home Care Employees Pension Fund
is still in “green,” or safely funded status, although our actuaries warn us that it is very likely to reach “endangered”
status by next year.
The Pension Protection Act requires us to send you a notice detailing this status, and what it means to you. You will
be receiving this notice by the end of April. And, rest assured we will keep you updated every step of the way as the
collective bargainers negotiate to protect benefits for all 1199SEIU members and retirees.
Despite this crisis, the pension benefit you have earned is secure. As always, you can call us any time you have a
question at (646) 473-8666. We are your Pension Fund, and we’re here to help.

Dear Sisters and Brothers,
Queridos Hermanos y Hermanas,
As we approach the fiftieth anniversary of the founding of our Union,
it makes me think about how lucky
we are to be 1199SEIU retirees.
Nos acercamos al cincuentenario de
la fundación de nuestro Sindicato,
lo que me hace reflexionar sobre lo
afortunados que somos de ser jubilados de 1199SEIU.
Many working people today
are retiring with no pensions, no
health coverage and no support.
But we, as 1199SEIU retirees, are
fortunate to have a guaranteed
pension for the rest of our lives.
Not many other retirees can say
that at this point in time. Many of
us have health coverage through
our Benefit Funds. And we have
retiree chapters and activities to
keep us busy and involved. In fact,
most recently, more than 700 of
our Florida retirees joined to celebrate at their annual banquet.
It’s important that you stay informed and involved. One of the
best ways to do this is by attending
your local chapter meetings and
reading these Retired Members
Division Bulletins.

So, even though the recession is
making times tough for so many
right now, think about how fortunate we are to have the opportunities our Benefit and Pension Funds
and our Retired Members Division
offer. I hope to see you at an event
or chapter meeting soon!
Entonces, aunque la recesión dificulte
la vida de tantas personas, considere
lo afortunados que somos de tener
las oportunidades que nos ofrecen
nuestros Fondos de Beneficios y Pensiones y nuestra División de Miembros Jubilados. ¡Espero verlo pronto
agrupaciones!

En solidaridad,
John Perkins

Executive Director of the 1199SEIU Benefit and Pension Funds
La Directora Ejecutiva del Fondo de Beneficios y Pensiones de 1199SEIU
Dear Retired Member,
Querido Miembro Jubilado,
As an 1199SEIU retiree, you have a rare
benefit in today’s economy – a defined
benefit pension. But although the
economic crisis won’t affect the pension
benefit you have now, it has left our
Pension Funds devastated. So this past
month, the Union and employers agreed
to take steps to stabilize our Funds going
forward. You’ll read more about the
status of our Pension Funds, and what
it means for you and for your working
brothers and sisters, in this issue.
empleadores acordaron tomar medidas
para estabilizar nuestros Fondos de aquí en
adelante.
hermanos y hermanas trabajadores.
Despite the challenges our Funds are
facing, we want to remind you that
your hard-earned pension benefit is still
secure. Your Funds and your Union have
survived tough economic times before,
and will do so again.
permanece seguro. Sus Fondos y su Sindicato
han sobrevivido antes a épocas económicas
difíciles, y lo harán nuevamente.
And even in this struggling economy, we
continue to look for ways to support our
retirees. We’re proud to be partnering
with Humana to offer improved health
coverage to many of our Florida retirees,
starting in June – another way we’re
looking out for you and helping you get
the care you need. Retirees who are
eligible for the plan will be receiving
more information directly from the Fund
and from Humana.
E incluso en esta difícil economía, continuamos
buscando formas de apoyar a nuestros
jubilados.

On March 30, more than 700 retirees and
their guests from across the state of Florida
gathered for the Annual Florida Retiree
Banquet. This was our best-attended banquet
to date.
The morning town hall meeting featured a
discussion of the enhanced benefits many
Florida retirees will receive through the new
1199SEIU Humana Plan. The afternoon
session began with a keynote speech by
Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz,
representing Florida’s 20th Congressional
District. Next, 1199SEIU President George
Gresham addressed the retirees on the state of
the Union and our Benefit and Pension Funds
in today’s economy.
Lunch and dancing to the music of DJ Mark
Desroisers followed, and a wonderful time was
had by all! Thanks to everyone for making our
banquet such a success.
We look forward to seeing you at the May
chapter meetings.
Sincerely,

IMPORTANT INFORMATION
Florida Retirees: Get Ready for the Humana Plan
As you heard at your chapter meetings and at the Florida Retiree Banquet,
the National Benefit Fund has partnered with Humana to offer many of our
Florida retirees a Medicare Advantage program beginning June 1, 2009.
We’ve received questions from many of you who have supplemental Medigap policies, asking whether you need to enroll. The answer is yes. If you
currently have a Medigap policy to cover your 20% Medicare B co-pay,
but you still use your 1199SEIU/Medco card to access prescription benefits, you’ll need to enroll in our 1199SEIU Humana Plan, or another Medicare Advantage or Medicare Prescription Drug plan by June 1. After that,
you won’t need to continue your Medigap coverage because you’ll get the
supplemental benefits you need through your new plan instead.
Be on the lookout for more information from the Benefit Fund and Humana
on this 1199SEIU Humana Plan. In the meantime, you can always call us
with any questions toll-free at (800) 892-2557.

A Message from
George Gresham
PRESIDENT, 1199SEIU UNITED HEALTHCARE WORKERS EAST
Dear Sisters and Brothers,
Queridos Hermanas y Hermanos,
The economic crisis is hitting close to home. Nearly all of us have a family
member or close friend who has lost or is in danger of losing a job or a
home or health coverage.
Fortunately, your 1199SEIU contract helps protect your own security and
well-being. But our union does not exist on an island and we, too, feel the
impact of the crisis. Like every other person and organization, our Pension
and Benefit Funds have lost a great deal of money in their investments over
the last year.
Please be assured that your pension and healthcare benefits are secure. The
federal Pension Protection Act requires that pension funds be able to pay
out all accrued pensions, and our Pension Fund has done that.
The problem is that, going forward, as the economy continues to collapse,
we are entering a critical “red” zone that could put us in danger under the
Pension Protection Act.
In order to immediately protect your pension assets and
those of 145,000 other sisters and brothers, your elected
1199SEIU Executive Council and Delegate bodies voted
unanimously to re-open our contract with the League of Voluntary Hospitals and Homes in hopes of achieving a solution to long-term stability for the funds.
Those talks will begin in early May. Meantime, please be assured that your
collective bargaining agreement remains in force. Everything we have already earned is protected. We are only negotiating about the future. No
changes can be made without the approval of the membership.
years, and we are confident we will emerge victorious from this one, too.
