My core are ea of expertise is atmosphericc mineral dust. I am also a model m de eveloper with aa large experieence in superco omputers and operational forecasting. Since 2009 I work in the US whe ere, currently, I am Asssociate Researrch Scientist att the NASA Go oddard Institutee for Space Studies and Colu umbia Universitty, and I serve e as PI and co‐‐PI in co ompetitive reseearch projects funded f by the Department oof Energy, NASA A and NOAA, with w collaboratoors at NOAA/N National Centerrs for En nvironmental P Prediction, NOAA/Geophysica al Fluid Dynam mics Laboratoryy, Princeton University U and Cornell Unive ersity. Some of my acchievements aree: ol as a radiativeely active substtance in numerical weather pprediction models can significcantly 1) I showed thatt the inclusion of dust aeroso im mprove weatherr forecasts overr dust affected regions, a sem inal work inspirring a number o of studies and iinitiatives there eafter. 2) I led an interrnational multi‐institutional in nitiative to devvelop a unique e unified (regio onal and globaal) prediction model m for weaather, atmospheric aerrosols and chemistry that tod day provides ooperational forecasts widely used by the innternational scientific commu unity, we eather servicess, companies an nd air quality managers. 3) I played a seeminal role on the design, crreation and suuccessful imple ementation of the World Meeteorological Organization O (W WMO) Re egional Centerss on Sand and D Dust Storm Pred diction in Spain , the only operational forecasting services foor airborne dustt fully recognizeed by WMO. W 4) I proposed no ovel methods to t constrain th he mineral andd chemical com mposition of du ust in models iin order to improve the currrently un ncertain estimaates of dust aerosol effects upo on climate. 5) I led an interrnational cross‐disciplinary re esearch effort involving the World W Health Organization O too unravel the links between dust ae erosols, climatee and meningitis epidemics in A Africa showing the current po otential to foreccast risk of menningitis epidemiics based on climate an nd dust informaation. My work has ressulted in 46 peer‐reviewed pa apers (67% in Q Q1, H‐Index: 24 4, i10 Index: 38 8, number of cittations: 2370, Google Scholarr), 20 ch hapters in bookks, proceedings and reports, 150 contributionns to conferencces/workshops//seminars (26 aas invited speaker) and the ed dition off a book of procceedings. My work inclu udes multiple approaches (laaboratory, field d, model pred ictions) and a range of metthods paarticularly focussing on isotop pe measurements to examinee the behaviou ur of trace elem ments. Ultimattely, my goal as an environmental ge eochemist is to deliver researcch that providess an evidence‐bbase to underpin sound decisio ons and policy making for society. My resea arch is supporteed by the constant devvelopment of novel approaches for the stuudy of both sttable trace elements and raddioisotopes in a suite of mattrices including (i) coal and mine wastte as potential sources (main focus of my ressearch between n 2005‐2009), ((ii) soil‐water syystem as tempo orary orr permanent sin nk of trace elem ments (2010‐2016) and (iii) plaant/animal tissu ues as potentiall receptors (20112‐2016). Isotope data nhances our mechanistic understanding on the behaviourr of trace elem ments in the environment, andd enables us to shed light on n the en prrocesses contro olling their transfer to non‐labile pools in soill. An nother key drivver of my reseearch is develo oping our abilitty to produce mechanistically y sound long‐teerm prediction ns of trace element avvailability and h how biogeocheemical sinks operate.
