I’ve noticed that every day it is a little darker in the morning as I wake up and a little darker as I go home
every evening. I enjoy watching the leaves change colors and enjoy some of the cooler weather. The fall
always reminds me that as the world around us is changing, our children are changing too. As a team, we
can make a difference that will last a lifetime. Parents are an important of the team when they partner with
the school. We welcome you to come fill out a background check and become a volunteer in the classroom,
library, or office.
It was a pleasure to meet and visit with many of you at Open House. We had a great turnout and it was
wonderful to see so many parents interested in their child’s education, thank you! For those who could not
attend, I hope to see you at the upcoming parent/teacher conferences. I’m always happy to have parents
drop by the office to say hello or to share any concerns or new ideas with me.
Looking forward to more of this great year together, Travis Howard, Principal

What Will the Future Be for Coos Bay School District?
Come and help write it!
Our Coos Bay School District has long shared with the community the rapidly deteriorating condition of our facilities as
well as our ideas for providing 21st century learning environments for the children and grandchildren of our community.
We want to hear from you and have you reach out to the rest of our community.
All members of our community are invited to discuss the long-term future of Coos Bay Schools. This is part of the district’s
20-year planning process. We will begin with an interactive Community Visioning Meeting open to the public on
Wednesday, October 10, from 5:15 pm to 6:45 pm at Milner Crest Education Center. We are located at 1255 Hemlock
Ave. (off 10th, north of Mingus Park).
We are hoping that volunteers from that meeting will form a Community Task Force. That Task Force will engage the
community during the coming year, sharing the Vision, finding what ideas appeal to the community, and eventually,
forming a picture of what the solutions look like to get us to our goals.
It is about more than bricks and mortar. This is a complete look at how we deliver education compared to how other
districts across the state and the country are doing the same for their communities. We want our children to have the
best opportunities. Whether those opportunities are provided through partnering with local business partners, emerging
partners or areas outside of Coos County. We think our kids deserve the best.
The first phase will be to understand what the community wants. Then we will have workshops to create solutions and
get public input from the community on the solutions. We are not going to rush this. We want to be sure that every
member of our community who wants to share will be heard.
If you think you might be interested in having a hand in shaping the future, please attend the meeting on October 10 and
see if this is for you. If you cannot make the meeting but want to be involved, please contact us to let us know that you
are interested and that you want to receive notice of future meetings.
We cannot do this without our community.
We will not do this without our community.

Rachel's Challenge is a series of student empowering programs and strategies that equip students and
adults to combat bullying and ally feelings of isolation and despair by creating a culture of kindness and
compassion. The programs are based on the writings and life of 17 year-old Rachel Scott who was the first
student killed at Columbine High School in 1999. Rachel left a legacy of reaching out to those who were
different, who were picked on by others, or who were new at her school. Shortly before her death she
wrote,
"I have this theory that if one person can go out of their way to show compassion, then it will start a chain
reaction of the same. People will never know how far a little kindness can go."
Cada día que 160.000 estudiantes no van a la escuela
porque son intimidados, son molestados y son acosados.
¿Cómo puede crear usted un mejor ambiente a la escuela? ¡Venga y averigüe!
