Rising 3rd Grade Summer Math Information
Rising 3rd graders had a busy year in 2nd grade learning the following new math skills:












Counting and writing numerals to 1,000
Comparing 3 digit numbers (<, >, =)
Place value and expanded form
Bar and picture graphs
Addition and subtraction within 1,000 to include word problems
Odd and even numbers
Money (coins, bills, adding and subtracting amounts)
Linear measurement (using various tools and units of measurement )
Telling time on an analog and digital clock to nearest 5 minutes
Partitioning shapes into halves, thirds, and fourths
Creating arrays to show repeated addition
Attributes of 2D shapes
Each year builds upon each previous year’s skills in math. Check out the Takoma Park
Elementary School web site for fun, hands-on math activities that will reinforce and
strengthen your child’s foundational skills over the summer like the following:
 Neighborhood Number Stories – Write and solve number stories based on data
collected while traveling in your community or to another place
 How Much Mail? – Collect data on a household’s mail for one week
 Plant and Measure! – Measure and compare the growth of 2 different plant seeds
