Hello CSA members. Nominations for the executive
council for CSA are now open. Voting will take place before

New Orleans (May 2529,
2015), under the presidency of
Jan DeCosmo. (For conference

would become CSA president in 2016). The Vice

which will be held in Haiti is: "Caribbean Global

GRADUATE STUDENT CORNER
Graduate Student Breakfast & Other 2015
Mentoring Activities in New Orleans
Students and faculty members are encouraged to
participate in our speciallyplanned events for graduate
students during our conference in New Orleans.
Graduate students and faculty will be matched in
mentor relationships that will allow us to get to know
each other. CSA will then host a breakfast meeting for
the mentors and their graduate students to allow our
new (and most likely young) members to better find
their way within the CSA and carry the torch into the
future. Throughout the week we will ask the graduate
students to check in with their mentors to report how
they are doing with networking, attending sessions and
feeling like valued members of the association.
Graduate students and interested faculty should
contact Russell Benjamin at [email protected]
to become part of this experience (include research
area please). In the past, this has been one of the
more memorable events that our graduate students
report from the conference.
Please note, that we do not make
lodging arrangements. This service
only connects people interested in
sharing a room.

In addition, CSA will be presenting two panels
designed to assist young CSA scholars. The first
concerns how to finish a Ph.D. and get a job. Three
junior faculty members who recently completed their
doctorates will help graduate students learn the latest
strategies for working with their committees, writing
their dissertations and ultimately getting into the job
market. The second panel will focus on getting tenure
and promotion and will include one senior and two
recently tenured faculty members. Topics to be
covered include how to prepare tenure and promotion
dossiers, how to work with department chairs and how
to select external reviewers. Check the 2015
conference program for the day and time for these two
panels.
Thirdly, all graduate students should consider applying
for two awards: the George Priestley Graduate Student
Award and the Barbara T. Christian Literary Award.
The Caribbean Studies Social Justice Graduate
Student Paper Award has been established in honor of
Dr. George Priestley in recognition of his lifelong
contributions to social justice, antiracism, HIV/AIDS
awareness, the AfroLatino identity, and international
human rights issues. The Barbara T. Christian Literary
Award was established in 2001 by past CSA President,
Dr. Cora Christian, to celebrate her sister’s intellectual
legacy in black feminist criticism. Please visit the web
site for more information on these awards.
We look forward to meeting you in New Orleans. Safe
travels,

New Orleans hotel rooms are difficult to come by. Conference participants may
make reservations online at https://resweb.passkey.com/Resweb.do?
mode=welcome_gi_new&groupID=33653120, or by calling the inhouse reservations
office at 5045843959, MondaySunday, 7 am to 6 pm CST, and providing the

online, make your reservation for any of the five nights for which we have contracted
(Monday through Friday), and then call the hotel with your confirmation number. At
that point, based on hotel availability, you may add any of these nights outside of our

May 30th – 31st. There are more rooms available the weekend before the
conference than afterwards, and our special CSA Whitney Plantation Tours will take
